    We got a Brittany this year and I took her out for the first time on a puppy walk at 6 months this season. The interesting thing I found is that because I live on the west side of Washington, she immediately recognized that she’s on the east side and behaves completely different when we are on the east side because she correlates the smells of the sage and terrain with hunting. She’s an absolute beast already. Absolutely love her!

      Yes, it can be done on the ground, on a picnic table at a park, back tied to a tree/post. Wherever. The principles are the important part. The table definitely helps (dog and the handlers back....) but not 100% required. The podcast episode we did went into the weeds on it a bit more. -->ruclips.net/video/RsqQP2bNbBA/видео.htmlsi=wQ1tB2cM4CVolma2

    How fun is it to train a bird dog if you have to think about ALL this non sense? Really easy to train bird dogs of any breed that doesn't have to be this complicated. It is good to understand all this stuff, but more confusion to those that don't understand it. Simplification is your friend.....Black and White world.

      I had a bit of a tough time too,to comprehend what they are talking about.But it's because I didnt know what the technical dog training terms meant.But once I did a little research I found what they meant.So that helped.They're discussion is quite philosophical ,but for me it can be very beneficial to learn the philosophical side of it.

      Thanks for watching! I can see and relate to what you're saying. However, to answer your question, I personally don't have fun training dogs if Im NOT thinking about the bigger picture and context of it all. I don't agree dog training is a black and white world as that would be a disservice to anyone thats dedicated their careers and livelihoods by developing it as a true skillset or profession. I believe there should be substantially more thought given to how most people approach training their dogs. If it was as simple as you imply and its just doing the same thing over and over again regardless of the particular dog, breed, individual handler, environment, and their unique end goals then I would find it really boring and unfulfilling myself. But each their own! As long as you and your dog are having fun then continue doing it your way! In my opinion, that doesn't make other people's thought process nonsense though.

    • @67plym
      @67plym 2 дня назад

      @@gundogityourself agree....you should always be thinking and learning while training dogs. NOBODY knows it all. The Black and White statement was mainly for the dogs benefit....they learn best with clear objectives. We do too for that matter....simple is better and less is more. It is good to understand the training quadrants and also different techniques to apply to the many different temperaments of dogs and trainers. No cookie cutter method fits all dogs/all people. Food for thought....bird dog training is really teaching the dog a series of cues to get it to do its instinctual job for the hunter. If you don't train the dog you will most likely have a self hunter that could care less who is with it. Many way to teach these few cues. And the better they are taught and generalized the better the dog will perform for you. Nothing replaces time and effort. Once the dog knows the cues well he can start his education on wild birds....wild birds are the real teachers. Wild birds will show you where the holes are in your training and will expose faults in the dogs breeding. Keep up the good work!

    I remember hearing a number of retriever trainers remarking that the more ubiquitous and sophisticated use of the e-collar allowed softer dogs to be trained up to a proper standard. The general consensus was that with the hard physical training methods the soft dogs either shut down or were so worried about the correction they couldn't work. As I understood it, the dogs lacked both the physical and mental resiliency to deal with the methods. The e-collar allowed a softer and quicker correction that didn't overpower the soft dogs personality. Maybe that's why people think dogs are softer because they're seeing more soft dogs working than there would have been in the past. One of the trainers did worry that dogs were losing the ability to independently work out a problem with overuse of the e-collar.

    How do you address noise? I have a dog that gets stressed on backs and vocalize leaving the line. Never on marks so I knowing stress.

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 7 дней назад

      There are a number of ways to potentially resolve that. Obviously keep in mind theres missing context as this is in response to just a quick YT comment. Dogs don't always vocalize due to stress. Without knowing your situation, Id venture the dog isn't just yelling because he's stressed. Hes probably leaking just through sheer anticipation of knowing whats on the other side of the setup and knowing hes going to get released. So every time he gets to leave that line and run through whatever correction (if any) when he vocalizes then its only reinforcing the leaking even more the next time. So I would definitely nix and stop all reps leaving the line until that is resolved. Using -P and losing the opportunity at the retrieve is a powerful lesson for a dog like that. For +P and/or -R approaches then I would say a dominant slip lead with proper timing should fix it fairly quickly. Just remember, this video was more about training the retrieve. The send off is a completely different behavior and one you can intentionally setup and drill without having to worry about any of the retrieve work. In other words, concentrate on just 1 skill to improve and youll see how fast it gets resolved. Hope this helps!

    I can see the convenience of the mechanism,but you can get the same job done it looks like by having a helper put the treat down instead of the machine.But yes,it makes everything more convenient with the machine if you are doing this process alone.

    • @gundogityourself
      @gundogityourself 20 дней назад

      Of course. The machine is by no means a requirement. Just a convenience. Most people don’t regularly train with helpers though. One thing the machine does offer that may not be a good fit for a helper is the consistent and reliable mark in that direction. You start adding in helpers and relying on them to mark things consistently and on time then that may cause some potential issues in my experience training with other people.

      With the proper load then it can handle the job. Pheasant are some tough birds but they’re no different than any other game species. With the right preparation and figuring out the pattern and payload, then it comes down to how good a shot your are. If shooting off tail feathers then it won’t matter if you’re shooting even a 10g.

      At the same rate/point that you decrease food in training any other behavior. Food is typically always in the beginning. Sometimes when done right. Never because the behavior becomes the “reward.” There’s no way to say when that reward schedule should change. That comes down to you adjusting to your dogs needs in the moment.

There is absolutely zero difference on target between a 1 oz load (of no. 6 shot for instance)fired from a 12 ga, 16ga, 20 ga or 28 ga at say 1200fps provided patterns are adequate.😮 Its the same load going the same speed with the same amount of pellets. All about the correct choke and ability to hit your target. 28s are great for lightness and ease of carrying. They most likely will be the start of the end for the 20ga. I understand the logic but do not agree or believe there is a part of the conversation missing. Timing is the word. To shoot a bird that the dog hasn't found or pointed is simply an exercise in your dogs retrieval skills. Yet to shoot a bird that the dog has bumped because he ran right thru the bird or pointed yet will not hold and continues to creep until the bird flushes, this only reinforces the bad behavior and it isn't easy to break those bad habits by rewarding the dog with a bird to retrieve.

    Listened on my way back to Ohio from chasing December Michigan grouse…I found the conversation about the West method and your comment about teaching “whoa” interesting and timely. I have a 1.5 yo griff (steady to flush mostly/sometimes) who will be working in steadiness to shot (maybe fall) this spring. I have been struggling with the ambiguity of the West method and had planned using broad concepts of West along with teaching the whoa command.

    • @randoski2010
      @randoski2010 Месяц назад

      @mikegillam4555 the ambiguity most people have with the West Method is that they feel like they are out of the loop. The handler isn't giving a command that is obvious to THEM. It is so important in any type of dog training to try and "think like a dog". We communicate with dogs in so many ways and with regard verbal commands the actual words are the least effective way to communicate. Now tone, volume and inflection are a very effective way of communicating, but often times it has unintended consequences. This is why the West Method is silent. Once you can conceptually get over this hurdle the West Method is suprisingly simple. Pressure/release of pressure via the check cord & pinch collar along with the handler's body language is 80% of the teaching process. Now cc management is a real skill but when handling a dog be conscious that pressure via the pc should only be applied to show the dog he's not behaving properly...but remember the dog hasn't done anything wrong until the bird is in the air! Thus the bird teaches the dog. Go easy with the corrections at first and as the dog begins to understand the rules but breaks them you can gradually increae the intensity of the "cue" (- R) into a correction (+P). That in a nutshell is the West Method.

    GREAT episode Nick. Around 50:00 the conversation about not "feeling" like you are making progress is SUCH good discussion. Some friends wrangled me in to a FB dog training group where we post a short training video every day. I see videos from 6 months ago where we are struggling with X and now X doesn't even get attention in our training because it has been going so smoothly for weeks or months. I liken dog training to someone losing or gaining weight: if you see them every day, you don't notice the very subtle daily changes; if you see them once every 6 months you think "Oh my gosh what a drastic change!?" Same with our dogs man. Thanks for all you do with GDIY!
