Hi there! My name is David, and on this channel, I react to videos, mostly of musical artists (with a focus on a capella).
I consider myself to be a jack-of-all-trades in many ways, and so while my analyses may not go into the extreme depths of many other reactors, I hope to be able to provide a wide range of insight, thoughts, and discussions.
If you enjoy my work, please like my videos, subscribe to my channel, and we'll see where this goes.

I absolutely love Geoff's version of this traditional carol. One of my favorite things about his videos is the interaction between all of the iterations of Geoff. Even though the music was darkish, he seemed to smile at himself more than usual. And when tenor Geoff was hitting those beautiful notes, the Geoff to our left on the end closed his eyes as if enthralled. Wonderful!
Yes check out the evolution of Cinderella, evolution of Ariel, 10,000 hours(focuses on the Disney guys 👑), Part of World (Hero Medley).
❤❤❤
What you said about the emotions being so high you can't say the words but have to sing them made me think about certain religions like Native American and Jewish that sing their prayers instead of saying them.
Dude, I could listen to you talk forever. I love how detailed your analysis is, yet I didn't even notice it's an hour long.
Thank you so much - I really appreciate the compliment, and I'm glad you enjoyed my video. :-)
Also one of my favorite pieces!! So beautiful!!
If you haven't seen it yet I recommend Huldra's video "comparing" this Geoff version with the Muppets singing Carol of the Bells. It's short and a good laugh!
I found that your observation about the original scene this song is from and how their characters could relate to it gave me a new perspective on how they built this performance; it starts off heavy and mournful, and depending on whether you think of them as prisoners in that lineup or as pirates out on the sea who recently heard about it, it carries the weight of what’s happening/has happened. The words are slow and hesitant and difficult for them to get out. Then the music starts to pick up speed, and you suddenly move into that sense of solidarity, the understanding that they’re in this together-whether it be for the coming execution, or simply the fact that they know they have to watch their backs even more now; there’s also a growing sense of determination and ferocity, which culminates in the repetition of the first verse where they’re no longer in that defeated state; if you take it the prisoner angle, it almost feels like this is a version of the scenario where the people suddenly started fighting back against their fate. In the “ship of pirates who heard about it” angle, it feels like they’ve decided to get payback, with this song as their rallying cry. Thank you for this analysis. I could just be reading too much into what you said, but it just struck me so I figured I’d share :)
Don’t worry about having missed that slide on the first couple times watching it; I missed it too lol, but that just gave me something to discover about it on later watches :D
I'm so very impressed with how you did your Reaction Video. You could sure teach a few how to properly review a song. One young man stopped it 14 times analyzing EVERYTHING, even the sand. If I could have, I would have reached thru my phone and pinched his head off. If it is listened to in full, then run it back and comb out the snarls in your brain. If I had to guess, he is still confused about the meaning of it all, sand included. Sorry about ranting.❤❤
So funny!
Please keep react Versailles next song bro
I have added them to my list for future reactions, so there will be more in due course, but not immediately.
The only thing better than this video is their live performance on Conan Obrien! It's on RUclips as well.
Great reaction. :) If you're interested to discover more Visual Kei bands similar to this one, I really recommend symphonic speed metal band 摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera) and their song "真っ白な闇がすべてを塗り替えても" (Masshiro na Yami ga Subete wo Nurikaete mo), it's really great band, one of my favourites. :) Hope you will react to them. ;)
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll add it to my list.
@davidkreacts Thank you. :)
It was refreshingly different. Not the top of my list, but intriguing.
Thank you! Glad to bring you something new. :-)
Happy belated holidays and happy new year! - I can only imagine how much time and effort went into cutting up a copy of the video and placing it strategically in the correct spots for this. Thank you for the massive effort. - This was filmed at the Howey Mansion, a location that at least Kathy has wanted to film at for years. Geoff also mentioned that he was asked if he experienced anything spooky while there, so I guess it also has a reputation for being haunted. But he and Kathy were in and out of there in a matter of about 5 hours, so there was no time for shenanigans. 🤣 - Geoff's boss, aka Kathy, told him Carol of the Bells was the song he needed to do this year and he needed to make it epic. He said he knew that rhythmic change was the first thing he knew he wanted to incorporate. - Ooooh Geoff what are you doing?! Exactly! I've been wanting someone to really break down that chord change. Hopefully you will. 😊 - Yes, that artwork is a depiction of the bells after Geoff was through singing. 😆 - That string tremolo is quite hauntingly beautiful, and Geoff said it was from a plug-in he had ignored for years because it's called lores....which he interpreted as low res and thought, well I don't need to mess with that. 😂 - Okay stop stop stop......how is it that every time I watch one of your analyses, I learn a new word? crotchet? Crotchet?? I have played the flute (since my first note to groups non-professionally) for 30 years, I have taken music theory classes, I have taken music history classes, I have a general love of great music, and I have never heard the term crotchet as an alternative name for a quarter note. I had to go on a ten minute tangent away from this video to do some research. Every time with you, sir! *sigh* This is why you're my favorite. - I'm going to have to go back and listen for those strings. I'll probably listen for them in the karaoke version on Patreon first. They'll be easier to pick out there. - Yes! 🤘🏻Rock it out, David! 🤘🏻 🤣 - Much like you mentioned at the beginning, that low dong that got held out and faded away as the next line started, the same happens here where higher Geoff sings "throw cares away" and away takes up its own 2 bars for the line but then continues to hover over the start of the next line and slowly fade as well. It's one of my favorite parts. - "Harmonically I don't know where we're at at this point." Me either, David, me either. 😆 Yes, it goes up a half step, but the way he does it....🤯 - "I'm making a pig's breakfast of everything today." Sir, you must stop. 🤣 - I think the single chime was the perfect way to end this as well. Yet another reaction and analysis I have thorughly enjoyed. Thank you for all your hard work, and I hope 2025 has been treating you well so far.
If you liked that try COLD by Chris Stapleton
15:45 Another great reaction to Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence. It just never fails. I feel justified for all my gushing.
I have not seen the play nor have I seen the movie. (I’m old-school and read the book😊) I have watched this several times because I love the whole package but her vocals were just outstanding. You pointed out a lot of things I’ve never considered, partly because you’re familiar with the productions I think, but also that you just pay so much more attention. The lyrics were so well written but they were much deeper than I thought they were because I’ve not seen any of the productions. Now it means even more. The Evolution of Cinderella”If the Shoe Fits ) was the first that they did. It was followed by the Evolution of Ariel (“Fish Out of Water”), and another one that I’d like to add to your list of some days: another done in association with the lLittle Mermaid. It is called the Heroes Medley, and it features both the personification of the cartoon mermaid and the Halle Bailey version. I love the villains lair but the evolution series is so much deeper. These songs have some pretty important questions in them.
So glad you persevered through the tech problem to give us such an insightful video! I'd been too busy with work to watch it until now, but knowing it was waiting for me made me smile a bit more through the long days.
Paul Simon is a lyrical genius
I was a child when G&F put it out! I got it! I was upset that they were making a remake! And I knew from the first stanzas he nailed it! It was done with respect!
I grew up with S&G and I love this song. I have heard Disturbed when my son would play their music. When my son told me I should listen to this new song by Disturbed and told me it was The Sound of Music I was very leery. I am 70 so I have loved this song for a long time and I don't want someone ruining by screaming. I do like Disturbed but on this song I don't think so. But I listened to it. Oh my gosh!!! My whole body responded to this version of the song. I have listened to it 100s of times now. Like some I didn't take time to think about the lyrics when I was way younger. However, this version demands my attention and makes me analyze and delve deep into what I feel. So intense. I believe finding that reason is why I cry and feel so deeply. When I was younger I was already locked into a silence of my being who I truly am. I didn't and couldn't analyze the meaning. Today at 70 I am a different person and finding the truth I have listened and sometimes that is isolating and lonely. I can feel the rage because I am angry that people are not listening to our world and to those around us. Feeling the pain of everyone around me is intense and painful to my soul. I wonder if God feels this way? Thank you for your incredible reaction.
I really need to say,.... Quite a beautiful piece of vocal artistry by all musicians involved,....I already mentioned to my oldest daughter that I would like this played at my wake!❤
Loved this.
David and Disturbed own this song - this cover is the best ever. I tear up each time I hear it and am moved head to toe. It is truly like a religious experience to hear David's magnificent voice and interpretation. I am sorry but you talk toooo much. For goodness sakes - save for the end!!!
One thing I really like about that warm, yellow light, right as we first see Jessica, is that it kind of mimics the yellowish light you get in the sky right before a twister. For me, it doesn't feel 'warm', but instead eerie and tense. Standing in stark difference to the bright colorful shot of the yellow brick road right before. Even as we see the yellow brick as part of the background scene, it is never as bright again as that first shot. And the 'twister' lighting really echoes the beginning of the original movie. Later, as we get the cooler, blue lighting, it is as the wind gets more intense. Even though we don't get actual 'water' the change in light makes me feel as if it has started pouring. That gives me an entirely different tenseness. Will she melt? But it is a change in the storm - from twister to hurricane.
Nice commentary on a great song! This is one of my favs from PattyCake, glad you were able to enjoy it also.
The amazing Evilene costume (bravo Tony!) will soon be on permanent exhibit at the All Things Oz Museum in Chittenango, NY, birthplace of L. Frank Baum. The other costumes are recreations of what each Elphaba wears on stage or on film/video. Jessica did this filming literal days before having major back surgery. Kathy played the Wicked Witch (and a munchkin) for PattyCake's Will.of.Oz Unexpected Musical (several other VP folks are in that video), There's also an Ariel evolution in which Layne and Tony recreated a 90s Disney Store ( ruclips.net/video/mln9KU2g_yo/видео.html ). And yes, Kathy did the cackles.
I'm kind of obsessed with this one, because it's amazingly done but also because somehow, despite both the character and story being completely different, the lyrics fit my WIP novel's protagonist almost perfectly 😅 Thanks for another great analysis!
The day before Jessica was due to fly to Florida to record this, she suffered a major back injury. The shoot was postponed (and the forest stayed there.). A month later, she flew down to spend a day recording, then right back to NY for back surgery.
That was very fun, as always. If you want to see the origins of witch!Kathy, check out "Will.of.Oz", one of the early entries in PattyCake's "Unexpected Musicals" series. (There are some bonus VP members in there, too.)
Layne and Tony are amazing artists, truly creative geniuses. The song lyrics have such depth and the melody's slight nod to Defying Gravity and that dramatic end.....
So close! It's seven fifteen PM as I type this. "The Wiz" was the witch I didn't recognize. The only production of that that I've seen was when a touring company performed it for an assembly, when I was in elementary school, many, many, years ago.
💚💚💚💚💚💚
Thank you for guiding us through with this lovingly detailed discussion. I've seen the video several times but have missed so many nuances.
Love these also waiting for more of the villain's lair Another series i think you would enjoy reacting to is Epic: the musical :concept with Animatics 40 songs .. a retelling of the Odyssey. The Animatics are not officially cannon to the soundtrack but most are based off the livestream partial animatics or directions of the Author (also the lead singer) Jorge Rivera-Herrans (Spanish pronunciation) AKA Jay.
Thanks for this reaction and analysis. Cool that Kathy Castellucci is in this one (not that she's readily recognizable...LOL).
Your analysis is extremely detailed & very on point❤️Never would have consciously picked up on these details❤️Bravo❤️
❤I had the same reaction! Best performance of all time, imho❤
Getting to know someone via their musical inspirations is an unexpected yet revealing picture. Thank you for sharing youself and this beautiful piece. I've heard this on public radio but never knew anything about it; David's description adds to my appreciation.
You stopped he video 4 times so far in the same place. Why can’t you do all your commentary for that segment of the song all at once instead of starting and stopping the music after a couple of words. FRUSTRATING AS HELL
Really interesting to hear your take on this - like you I grew up hearing it, and can't remember the first time. But it's a wonderful piece of music, and one I'm always happy to hear again.
What a grand way to start my day! Thank you for this! It reminded me that I haven't listened to the Enigma Variations for a couple of years, at least. Guess what I'm going to inspire myself with this morning!
I knew that sound travels slower than light. But I'm used to thinking of it in terms of miles in scale (counting to four between lightning and thunder means the lightning strike was a mile away). The thought that human perception is sensitive enough to catch the difference across the span of a single concert hall is awe inspiring.
Thanks David 😊
Since l found your channel (Carol of the Bells) l watch your reactions to VP/GC in (almost) chronological order and l waited for your reaction to this. I know, late to the party, so all relevant comments are made. But, if l may, l would like to tell about my personal experience. This was in fact my second of VoicePlays vids. About half a year ago YT pushed VPs version of Wellerman in my feed and l liked it, so l checked their channel and saw THIS! I am a fan of this song since it got released and my spontaneous reaction was: WTF, HOW DARE THEY! I started the video, intending to hate it! Oh boy, was l wrong! I came around from 'WTF...' to 'This is INCREDIBLE, MINDBLOWING, ON PAR WITH THE ORIGINAL!' in less than one viewing! So much to see and hear, so many details, so different while still true to the original! And then came the stroke of genius to do the iconic guitar solo with the vioLayne... That was hook, line and sinker for me, it dragged me in this glorious rabbit hole, that VoicePlay & Geoff is, and l don't see me leaving it. Your reaction showed me, WHY it had this impact on me and at the same time you showed the same excitement l felt, when l heared it for the first time. Thank you for the great video, l could watch you nerding out over my favourite vocalists for hours, so no, your videos are NOT too long.
Love your reactions! Thanks for taking the time to share all your observations with us. Your reactions are not only entertaining but also informative, not only the musical part but also the theatrical performance. Subscribed and hope your channel grows big!
