    Have you thought about building a belly dump hopper car for spreading ballast??

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 9 дней назад

      Thanks for the comment, great question!! Yes I have definitely pondered the possibility of building a belly dump hopper of similar, however every belly-dump hopper I’ve ever seen in 1.5” scale has always taken a one-way trip to derailment city. Hard to get the spreaders right. That being said, we’re now in 3” (1/4) scale, which would make me think with significantly more weight derailments are less likely… but if it does derail with a full load, I’m definitely never picking it up!!! This Gon has been tried and true for me and holds enough for what I need, so for now I’ve decided to focus efforts pretty much exclusively on railroad construction. However, I have already drawn plans for a 3” end-dump Gondola, which would make direct ballasting significantly easier, and I do plan to build at least one eventually.

    What gauge is this narrow gauge line? I've seen many different videos of little railroads that can fit in backyards, but have no clue on the gauge. I mostly want to know so I could possibly make my own little railroad, train cars, and locomotive.

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 9 дней назад

      Thanks for the comment!! This railroad is 7.5” gauge, but 3” to the foot (1/4) scale. Feel free to check out our other videos as well, I have several smaller locomotives in 3.5” and 4.75” gauges (1:16 and 1:12 scales) which require much smaller turn radii yet are still strong enough to pull passengers. There are some great books for first-time builders by Kozo Hiraoka if you’re interested in building a smaller locomotive for yourself. Joining your local Live Steam club is also a great start for learning techniques, tricks, and what size equipment fits you best. If you’re in the US, DiscoverLiveSteam.com is a great resource to find local clubs and fellow hobbyists, as well as equipment for sale. Best of luck and welcome to the hobby!! 🔥

    That's a really nice loco! What's the source for electrical power? Is there a hidden dynamo? Battery somewhere?

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 8 дней назад

      Thanks very much!! I actually do have hidden oversize dynamos on two other locomotives, however Dulce currently just has a nice big tractor battery tucked conveniently under my engineer’s seat, alongside the brain for our cab radio. I would love to fit this loco with a 1/4 scale dynamo someday, possibly set up in a “charging” configuration along with the battery. In my experience dynamos in this scale are awesome… until you really need light and you’re low on steam! 🤣🔥

    Excuse me sir, this is the fun police and we're going to have to ask you to stop having so much fun! You're hogging it from the rest of us! The railroad is fantastic so far. Dulce really is a little sweetheart. If you don't mind my asking, what do you do for a living that you're able to afford all this? I've always wanted to join the hobby, but I can barely pay rent, much less afford several small steam locomotives and a plot of land to run them on. Best I could do was an Accucraft Ruby, and even that broke the bank...

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 8 дней назад

      Thanks very much! I don’t mind at all- I hate that this hobby has that “big dollar” reputation when it really kinda shouldn’t. I’m a touring musician, I’ve honestly never had any more money to spend than most HO or G1 guys I know… it’s all comparable if you dive in and get involved with local clubs. Equipment can always be obtained for cheap, I bought my NKP 311 in a million pieces for $500 (my life savings at the time). My 1.5” Atlantic was the same price, scrap value. Didn’t know anything about restoring or rebuilding locomotives when I bought 311, many new (now longtime) friends lent me their time and knowledge, the fleet slowly grew each time I was ready to move a new project onto the bench. 311 took us 5 years to light the first fire, but it was worth every day of hard work. Acquiring Dulce last year has been a dream come true for sure. This week I’ve just had the opportunity to rescue our 12th locomotive from an uncertain future (more info on that coming soon), and this is now my 20th year in the hobby. Life is crazy, but all anybody can do is save pennies, jump in, and be ready to find that first magic deal!! If I can do it, you definitely can too. (Also worth noting I started in 3.5/4.75” gauges, so much more affordable than 7.5. I’ve literally known folks to give 3.5 stuff away because they can’t or don’t have a place to run it). Also love Accucraft and thoroughly enjoyed playing with my buddy’s Ruby when I was young, he left it at my house on loan and I nearly ran the wheels off it!! So much fun. 🔥

    My lovely lazy way to move ballast and dirt is large boxes on flat cars. When you get wherever you want to be, you just throw the box / bucket whatever off the end of the car. Ballast cars are nice, but they don't really work for areas in front of your right of way or next to it as well.

    • @FoxIslandRailroadCo
      @FoxIslandRailroadCo 9 дней назад

      @@MrRailroadrunner I really love the idea of large boxes for flatcars!! Our former home club always used buckets, which I’ll admit, I quickly grew to despise (then continued that way for over a decade, as it was our only option). The only way to fill the buckets was by hand, then they had to be carried to flatcars which wasn’t ideal. I’m excited to finally have track reach the ballast pile so I can worry less about spilling rock upon loading, in that case I may start using buckets and flatcars again for larger loads (loaded in place with the tractor loader this time). But I love your Box idea- I think this might be the ticket!!! Thanks for taking the time to drop a comment and getting the brain-wheels turning about this again.

    You are so right, Jimmy: outdoor work (like building a railroad grade by hand!) is very therapeutic. And nothing beats working outside in the fall. Nice to see Dulce on home rails, simmering away outside of her temporary home. My final "big" project on the Rocky Ridge & Broad Top is to build a little permanent car barn of some sort. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next video - they always make my day.

      Thanks so much, Dave!! Really appreciate the kind words, it’s been a pleasure to share the process, and to finally get some of this footage posted! A friend said it best when he said, “sometimes, the right locomotive comes at the wrong time, and you just have to deal with it.” 🤣 I’ll be excited to begin designing a permanent engine house and unloading facilities in the coming months as well. The Cut is now finished, ready for dual-gauge into the barn once I get some more panels built… Hopefully it won’t be too long until I can invite you guys down for a run!! Thanks again & All the best 🔥

      @@GraysonForney Thanks for the kind words brother, if I can do it, so can you!! My best advice is join your local club, meet owners/maintainers/builders in your area who are willing to share knowledge. There’s loads more information available on RUclips nowadays, but nothing beats working with this stuff in person to figure out what kinds of equipment you like, and where you want to spend time in the hobby. Best of luck on your journey & thanks for following along. Live Steam is the coolest and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise!!! 🔥🔥
