You are so right, Jimmy: outdoor work (like building a railroad grade by hand!) is very therapeutic. And nothing beats working outside in the fall. Nice to see Dulce on home rails, simmering away outside of her temporary home. My final "big" project on the Rocky Ridge & Broad Top is to build a little permanent car barn of some sort. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next video - they always make my day.
Thanks so much, Dave!! Really appreciate the kind words, it’s been a pleasure to share the process, and to finally get some of this footage posted! A friend said it best when he said, “sometimes, the right locomotive comes at the wrong time, and you just have to deal with it.” 🤣 I’ll be excited to begin designing a permanent engine house and unloading facilities in the coming months as well. The Cut is now finished, ready for dual-gauge into the barn once I get some more panels built… Hopefully it won’t be too long until I can invite you guys down for a run!! Thanks again & All the best 🔥
Nice work! We are going to be neighbors in the near future. I am in the process of moving to 46 acres in north Mississippi. I will be starting a RUclips channel by the name of my future railroad, the Ripley & Great Southern. I’m glad that you are putting down some 7.5” track. I’m planning on getting some down by the end of February. Life is a wonderful gift from God. I’m glad that you are enjoying it with trains!
Thanks very much for this comment, and congratulations on the beginning of your new railroad!!! 🔥 Sounds like you’ve got a great spot as well, spending time on this land playing with steam has truly been such a blessing. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever need an extra set of hands or machine, us “backyard” folks have to stick together haha!! Cheers, all the best and I’m excited to follow along with your R&GS!! 🙌🏻 God bless
Haha thanks very much, but to be honest the expensive parts aren’t the railroad!! Just the land and the larger equipment… anybody can build a railroad, I think everybody should!! 😂🙌🏻 I always recommend folks start with 3.5”-4.75” gauges first like I did 20 years ago… tight turn radii, can get into an operable locomotive for less than Gauge 1, and can always find rail cheap if you watch and wait. I definitely don’t want to perpetuate the “huge barrier to entry” myth with the hobby, it’s only huge if you start at the top of the mountain!! I started with my life savings of about $400 and got my NKP 311 as a box of parts. I was 10 years old with no car or job, I so promise you can do even better!!! Join a local club and meet some of the guys, they’re packed with knowledge and usually at least one looking for a good home for their beloved loco. 🔥 All the best and really appreciate you following along!!!
Thanks so much, Matthew!!! Hope you’re well brother! Look forward to sharing a bunch more footage of Dulce under steam this year for sure. If there wasn’t such a big pond between us I’d sure love to get the gals back together haha, but man you’re always welcome to come meet Dulce if you’re ever in the states!!! 🔥 All the best & keep in touch for sure!!
Great video 👌 I live off of “tomorrow is NEVER promised”.. “But wait until you “retire”… NOPE!!” DO it NOW! I look forward to getting our 3” Scale Locomotives together one day ;) 🚂 -Keep Steaming
Love this- you’re absolutely right!! Nothing is guaranteed; to get ahead, get started!! Appreciate the kind words and always enjoy following your channel and beautiful Butter Pig. Definitely stoked to get these big gals together one of these days! 🔥 All the best brother!!
Looks amazing!! For long term, I would insulate the shed or maybe make a spur to go into shop so the locomotive can stay out of any humidity or anything that would make the boiler sweat. From experience with my buddy that has built a few live steam locomotives, he says if you can dry the boiler and store it dry it will last.
@@vettebecker1 Thank you! Apologies if it wasn’t clear in the narration of this video, this shed was just built to temporarily house the locomotive for one week between arrival and gaining access to my shop. We would never store a locomotive outdoors :) This is now used as a fair weather storage shed.
This has been a dream for me scince i was a very little kid im 13 now and i want to build one youve been very inspiring to me to kick my dreams into high gear. I apoligize for the passing of your father.
@@GraysonForney Thanks for the kind words brother, if I can do it, so can you!! My best advice is join your local club, meet owners/maintainers/builders in your area who are willing to share knowledge. There’s loads more information available on RUclips nowadays, but nothing beats working with this stuff in person to figure out what kinds of equipment you like, and where you want to spend time in the hobby. Best of luck on your journey & thanks for following along. Live Steam is the coolest and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise!!! 🔥🔥
They sure are, bottoms are also char-treated. This entire shed was lifted and moved back in April, and placed on top of a nice gravel pad for better drainage. The idea for this foundation-less shed was just to utilize materials I had, and it only really needed to exist for one week to house the locomotive inbetween arrival and gaining access to my shop. Anything beyond that has been a bonus, as long as it’s still solid we’ll keep using it for a car barn or fair weather storage! 🔥 Thanks very much for following along!!!
Thanks very much, Lee!! Hope you’re doing well and getting into some fall weather up there! Sadie does love to ride along, she’s been a great sport helping out with track work this summer. The bigger issue is that she loves to chase our family of deer!!! Also working to build more wire fence to make sure she stays on our farm when we venture out into the woods for longer rides 😁 Hope to see you guys soon!!!
How do I get your life? This is my dream life - including the dog! I've wanted to put a train in the backyard my entire life. I enjoyed every minute of this video - well done (video and train)!
Wow thank you very much!! 🙌🏻 Grateful to have gotten into the hobby and started my collection at a young age (and finding this piece of land for the RR was pure luck as it’s always been a dream for me too), but the best time to start in the Live Steam / backyard railroading hobby is right now!!! Cheers & thanks again, best of luck with your future railroad as well!!! 🔥
Pretty much all equipment this size is uniquely built by hand, by individuals. Best advice is to join your local Live Steam club to find folks and fellow hobbyists selling equipment locally. In the US we have disvoverlivesteam.com as a great resource, there are several sites for the UK and Europe showcasing equipment currently for sale by owners.
Your enthusiasm for the hobby and energy in getting stuff done is incredible!
What a beautiful engine! Very sorry to hear about your dad. He is still with you watching your railroad grow.

I hope the floor joists are pressure treated so they don't rot.
