Is A Monolight or Speedlight Better for Interior Photography?

Is The K&F 3GDW Tripod Head Any Good For Real Estate Photography?

    The soft shadows of the flash do look good. But having that many details in the windows doesn't look natural. That's not how windows look when you're standing in a room, and there's too much emphasis on the window details that take away from the room. They're too dark and would benefit from being slightly blown out even for a more natural look (while preserving enough detail to see what's outside). And unless it's a window view of a great-looking landscape or garden that adds a clear value to the property, why would you want such an unnatural-looking precise detail of what looks like the wall of the house next to it? For real estate, shooting brackets and a custom Photomatix profile give me more natural-looking results and less hassle on location and in post.

  • @360VRStudios
    @360VRStudios 20 дней назад

    If you got windows far away, it is hard to use darken mode because there is not enough light. Therefore, move closer and take a flash of the window. Then you could darken mode blend the far windows in post.

      That is why you need a remote trigger. Walk and flash.

    • @WillGayPhoto
      @WillGayPhoto 20 дней назад

      Thats one way to do it for sure. I have never enjoyed working that way, I like to keep it as quick and light weight as possible which includes not adding too many extra frames for trivial things like windows that are too far away, scalloped or dished ceilings, and shadows from ceiling fans. But if its something you can do that adds value and doesn't eat into your time. Im all for it!

    • @360VRStudios

      @@WillGayPhoto using pen tool and tracing it out, that eats time if not more. Flash it.

    • @phiswe
      @phiswe 19 дней назад

      Far-away windows shouldn’t have much darkness and detail to begin with. For a natural and balanced look, elements in the background should always be lighter and less pronounced (however slightly) than elements in the foreground.

  • @360VRStudios
    @360VRStudios 20 дней назад

    Take advantage of U1, U2 and U3. U1 could be used to bracket (5 exposures or whatever exposures you need). U2 could be set as your Flash, set the K value. U3 same as U2 with 1/200 for those window pulls.

    Big Productivity Boost thanks for the walktrough. Looking forward to the color cast correction video, everyone approaches this problem differently. Just one usability suggestion. Your super high aspect monitor screen captures come out pretty compressed vertically in your photoshop / LR screens when viewed on a (what i think is a more normal) 16:9 aspect ratio. thanks Will, another excellent and useful video. you said yourself in this vid that "there's no right or wrong way" to do these things but it's highly educational for us less experienced RE photogs to study what different more experienced guys had developed over time using trial and error and then try to understand the rationale. One thing your action does which is different than what i've been doing is stacking ambient copy normal mode 50% opacity<<ambient luminosity mode 100% opacity<<flash layer. I started off of Nathan Cools which is just ambient luminosity mode 50% opacity<<flash layer. I know you have a good reason for what you're doing but I didn't really grasp it fully in this video, can you elaborate a bit? PS I think you should come out with some t-shirts / merch: Flambient: These are the shadows I choose to fight!!

    • @WillGayPhoto
      @WillGayPhoto 20 дней назад

      Sure my rational for using the ambient stack at 50% is that when you do a flambient blend a large percentage of the time if not always you will be creating flash shadows that show up as orange on the lumosity layer. The only way to fix them that I am aware of is to add some of the ambient photo back in to cover them up. Typically you would mask it back in. But I have found that adding an ambient layer at 50% removes those shadows without having to hand mask them out in most situations. Its for time saving so I don't have to spend extra time hand masking the shadows out. Its not perfect mind you, but it gets you close with minimal effort.

    • @JeffreyJDavis
      @JeffreyJDavis 19 дней назад

      @@WillGayPhoto thank you brother, I just wanted to learn a little more about your rationale which seems to work. I built your actions and tried it on an existing flam stack and it DID require less hand editing. 🤙

For a similar - but NOT as good - outcome, I've been using a big ridgid (not very portable) 12" plastic sphere for the ad600 and a couple of fotodiox "ostritch egg" diffusers (for regular flashes). Those are okay, but your image results looks so much better.

    i tried the lantern today - although I chose to use a side to side (more like diagonal) technique with the top town tilted approach and 45-degrees on larger space -I have to say that I really liked it and my editing was easier - I found that I had to do much less color cast correction and things moved much quicker in post. Very pleasing look over all. I used the two sided room pops because I like the contrast a bit more that way. That said - I used a quick over camera pop for a darken color repair layer, which came in very handy and was so quick on site too. I used the AD300 with an Aperture lantern, which is about 25" and fits perfectly through doorways - any bigger and it would not work. Thanks for sharing....

    Thanks for the comparison. Actual light spread examples would be useful. Personally i think it hurts your credibility a bit when you spent a fair amount of energy talking down something which you admitted you have not tried. Magbounce on an AD200 is a viable alternative, total cost is $80. Flexible, portable, convenient , durable.

    • @WillGayPhoto
      @WillGayPhoto Месяц назад

      To be clear, I have used a magmod. I ownd one and sold it because of how much I did not like it. Have I tried their complete system? No which is what I am talking about in this video. But nothing has changed since I owned their MagSphere. All they are doing is making a mounting system, the modifiers are nothing new. There are many other cheaper alternatives that use the same material they do which I also own. My problem with their system isn't egonomics or durability. Its the price. The Godox ML30 is the same thing as the Magsphere, it doesn't require a $27 mount to use it, and its 50% cheaper. My issue with MagMod is they overpriced for what you get. The MagBounce is also a tiny light source. Its no better than a reflector or a the white domes you get with a speed light. And you bring up a great point. It would be worth my time to show off the differences between a speed light and a monolight. I think it would also be worth it to show off the differences in modifiers so I can better illustrate what I am talking about. I am quite passionate about this subject because when I was in advertising I wasted so much money on gimmicky that I don't want others to waste their money on them. But point taken.

      How does the magmod impact a shot when there is a ceiling fan or large chandelier in the room. Does it create shadows?

    • @JeffreyJDavis
      @JeffreyJDavis 9 дней назад

      @@garyjones101 by definition , any flash is going to create shadows, it's a matter of how hard they are and your ability to put them where they are manageable. Personally, I find the magbounce to be a pretty viable option. You can hold it at "fan level" in a lot of rooms for a flash pop and minimize shadows and it largely takes bounced color casts out of the equation. no modifier is going to eliminate shadows in flambient.

      Oh man this one sucks. Color is such a subjective thing, even before you get into the science of it. Displays can be brutal. I will put this down as a note for a video to dive deeper but one thing I have done is I have learned to edit for Iphone. I have an Ipad Pro for my Cubicasa and Matterport Apps and I spend a few days editing photos and testing them out on the Ipad to see how they looked vs what my monitor showed. I think the biggest thing I have done is to lean towards more neutral editing. I use neutral camera profiles, I use only the medium contrast tone curves for contrast and I only do 5-10+ on saturation to keep it under control. Also using the histogram and keeping things "ETTR" Exposed To The Right of the histogram keeps everything similar. Doing things this way I have not run into any issues.

But for window pull ill use another flashpop with more power + shorter exposure time. This should help to avoid dark halos around windows with the darken layer setting.

      Absolutely it does. You run into issues (at least I have) with relfections when you do this. Because the light reflects off the walls and illuminates the room and you see yourself or parts of the room in the reflection. Its not always the case but its more than 50% of the time. I mean you can of course shoot more flashes from more angles to mitigate it but then you are taking more time, and adding more time to editing to masking out your reflections. I wish there was a simple solution but unfortunately its just the physics of flash and photography we are running into. But yes a GREAT point to bring up!

      I don't think so. As far as I know its only for Classic. I only use classic so I cannot comment to much on it. Maybe someone else can chime in!

    Rokinon 45mm 1.8 on a Sony. Love the perspective of that focal length.

    I almost never use AF for Real estate video. One agency that sends a lot of work likes to have 1 unbroken walkthrough with no cuts so I leave AF off to do theirs but i'm getting other agencies that like the more dynamic videos with lots of B roll type shots and I just started shooting S-log to deal with the editing

      Yeah The 1 takes have been super popular here. I only offer my style of video because I try not to be trendy and stick to what I am good at. Not that there is anything wrong with it. I just don't like offering something I am not fully invested in. Which leaves money on the table sometimes but it also keeps me from working for people I don't like as well. I switch in and out of AF for different situations. My 14mm is MF only but there are times when I am shooting details I want to roll the focus. Also when I am recording my social media video being able to use full time focus on my eyes and not get any motor noise is super nice. I wish Nikon offered better Log profiles. I shoot N-Log but its nothing like S-LOG or RED LOG. I wish. I also found that the adapter made the 50mm F mount "hunt" for focus alot if I used it. But thats to be expected with an adapter sadly.

      @@WillGayPhoto really? I didn't think it was a new idea. I thought the short more cinematic shots were the new thing. Their reasoning for it is the viewer can more easily keep track of where they are in a house. I can understand it, I think some of the photographers around here lose their people with orphaned rooms. There is not much new construction here so houses were made to be heated with a central wood stove or fireplaces and rooms were made to be blocked off when not being used so navigating a house isn't as straight forward as it seems in new houses with more open concepts. I have to give them what they want though so i'm stuck with most being single takes.

    Interested in learning more about your switch to the Z6iii when you have a Z8? Using one for video and one for stills? Only using the Z6iii? What did you do with your Z6ii?
