How To Swap MTB Hydraulic Brake Lines (Hoses) - 10 Easy Steps - European / Moto to American
Просмотров 4,6 тыс.4 года назад
Need to switch from European (Moto) to American brake lever orientation (or back)? This shows how to do it (down and dirty). My son's new bike came from Europe (Chain Reaction Cycles in Ireland) with the brake levers on the wrong side. So we swapped them. Note: SRAM brake levers can be flipped upsidedown. So try sliding off handlebars and switching sides (instead of pulling hoses). SHIMANO brak...

You never actually demonstrated USING it!
When the stem is shortened, it brings the handlebars lower too. To fix this, a 17° or even 35° positive angled stem brings the bars up again.
Hi there. Fellow 26er here. What did you mean by “26 going up a little bit of effort to get the wheels going “? @1:38. You mean the “29 rolled faster? Cuz I’m experiencing as the only one with the “26 in a bunch of full sus or hardtail carbon. That I have to work extra hard on the climbs and on the flats. But I’m easy on small and tight corners 😂 Btw my “26 is a Giant Advance 3 carbon. Converted from 3x9 into a 1x11 😁 Thanks for sharing. I’m more a roedor than a mtber but I’m looking for something to rely on and even race with when i feel so. What can you say or think about the Marin Team Marin2. I’m looking between these two What do you recommend me honestly?
That front brake sounded fairly noisy. You may want to check the alignment of your caliper and fine tune it if you are sure the rotor is truly "flat". Noise in your brakes is never a gopd thing. When you spend the wheel with it free off the ground, there should be no noise at all. Good luck. Overall, a very nice video...great job!
Nice to see you doing some videos.
Whats up with a new bracket being needed? I mean, all the original bracket needs is to by pushed out 40mm so the pads are lined up just right with the new disc? And if you need two longer bolts, then get longer bolts, am I wrong here anyone? Thats what I am going to try, keep it simple if possible. Happy biking.
this pump is GARBAGE
P stands for post 😊
Excellent commentary and details for this trail!
Had surgery two weeks ago feeling much better each day.. 4th collarbone break on the same shoulder. I never had it fixed. Finally on the 4th break I had it plated. All bicycle racing.
Anyone have numbness issues? After surgery i have numbness from shoulder to mid chest and its cringy to me. I hate it
Glad to see you still have it! My bike is gathering dust by sitting in my barn. You are gathering dust the right way.
You gotta get out. : )
Have you ridden this trail?
I ate a burger and fries at milt's right by that trail and then tried to do it... It's a maximum effort kind of thing and pretty quickly all I wanted to do is barf that hamburger. 😂
With the heat, I can totally imagine that.
Have you ridden the classic Porcupine Rim Trail MTB in Moab Utah?
So cool. I was there way back in 2003, pre Strava, GPS & action cams. Good times :). Glad to see you back making videos :)
I had not ridden that trail in 20 years either. The memories all flooded back. Happy I was able to make most of the climbs. And super excited that I could share the experience with my two sons. You should go again.
This was a challenging ride. Rode in the mid-afternoon (peak heat) after a 6-hour car ride. It wore us out. Yet, loved every minute. Cool how humans crave challenge.
I hve trp brakes i can swaps my hydraulic brake linea ita the same process like push out the cables
Cool.
I’m going to start riding again after 8 years at 48. I look like I’m 40 and fell like I’m 60 so we will see how it goes. I like the videos. Thanks
You'll rock it.
I was looking at Trek Fuel EX, but you can’t beat the $4999 sales price. I think I’ll go with Specialized.
Lots of great bikes to choose from.
it is not European it is just British. Rest of Europe have braeks set same as you (i guess) i got the same problem but i got a road shifters (Sram apex) and do not know how to swap hoses :/
Thanks for the clarification.
Love it! Love it! Love it! Brother Broken clavicle and surgery here. Riding bikes for 45 years, I'm 51. Just like you, never broken anything. This video will help me rehab. Thank You!
Years later after surgery, I am still riding. Just rode MOAB this week. Keep going.
Be interesting if you checked you RAD Rider Area Distance to see if it is nearer to what it should be with the shorter stem.
Interesting point.
Just a newbie in mtbiking. Given that he has 180 and 203... How should should you modulate brakes in steep rocky corners and what rotor setup shoud you use? A) 180F/203R - front modulation B) 203F/180R - front modulation C) 180F/203R - rear modulation D) 203F/180R - rear modulation
Best to have LARGER rotor in FRONT. Front wheel is strongest stopper. However, you do NOT want to use all front brake in steeps and OTB (over the handlebars). Front wheel needs to roll through steep hits (and keep your weight back). For most brake scenarios, modulate (use) front and rear brake equally (same time).
I’m glad I watched this video as I’m thinking of buying a 2022 SJ EVO frame. Really happy that you said it climbs really well. I’m a terrible climber and it doesn’t help I’m 5’8, 222lbs. My only other concern is, since I’m getting it used, how strong is the carbon fiber?
I really like the SJ EVO. Great feeling bike. Per carbon, check for frame CRACKS. For any expensive bike purchase, have a bike mechanic check it over at a local shop. Seller should agree (or look elsewhere). Buyer pays for inspection (so you get unbiased answer). I do this with all car purchases too.
Nice, thank you for this. I just got a bike in today (Nukeproof) and its funky style (UK/European/Moto) and not the right way. I was thinking this was going to be a much messier and complete brake line (think cars) kind of job but this looks really easy. Here goes! Thanks again!
So glad this helped.
great job 👏👏👏
Thanks. It is a fun trail. My son's favorite.
now you need a set of riser bars with a little sweep and go a little wider than current unless your width is already maxed out
Good point.
Thanks for your honest video - after watching, I think I will bring it to their Golden Co location & pay to have them wrap it for me :)
It is a bear of a job. Mine does not look perfect, but is protecting from small scratches and bumps.
hey . can i ask u a question?
Go ahead.
boomer
Close.
Any Shimano brake, would be better than the "Level" brake
Just used the LEVEL brakes (2 pot) with 200 mm discs to ride MOAB (slickrock, porcupine rim, captain ahab). Worked great. Larger rotors helped. That said, I prefer a stronger brake for my weight.
I just got a vrs sentier a couple weeks ago from vitus itself. Had to do same thing with the gearing and not sure why if they test it before it ships. Find it hard that it would go that far out being strapped in its box
After the initial setup, 3 years later, my son loves the bike. No major issues (just standard maintenance - and not a lot). He just rode this bike in MOAB (slickrock and porcupine rim) ... with the original tires. Only new brake pads.
@@50mtb44kewl and unfortunately they don't exist anymore
R.A.D. is the way to size bar/stem combo.
Will check it out.
Broke mine last October 2021. Also went OTB and hit a rock, shattering it. 😂😂 Now I wear a cool titanium plate😂
We are Titanium Plate Brothers.
sol omzunuzda kisalanma var farkindamisiniz.
Sorry. Don't understand.
Thanks for sharing, but would had been better in a contrasting background or overhead lighting. Can't tell the difference since it is so dark on dark.
True. I am not a professional. : )
My question is, what do you do with your mountain bike if you get hauled off to the hospital?
Bring it in the ambulance ... of course. : )
All about that OTB...
Haunts you.
Aaaaahhh 😮
Freaked me out.
Why did you remove the front wheel?
Did not want to drop any brake fluid on the rotor during swap.
you gave me the confidence to do this myself, than you!
Glad it helped. : )
I think you passed by me at one point on box o rocks, that or you just look like a lot of the folks on Green. Cool footage, and you're totally right, you got a really good window (people wise) on this trail.
So fun to ride GM. Glad you are getting out.
Did you remove plates and screws later with another surgery?
Nope. Still in my shoulder (by design).
Shorter stem also mean that the terrain has more power over the steering, so you need to wrestle more on bumpy trails. Less stress on your hand by geometry but more stress when use the bike offroad.
Makes sense.
Your hand pressure is related to how much you engage your core. You should try to balance more so you can keep excess weight off the bars. Not quite as easy as a motorcycle but can be helpful.
Good point. I have a strong core (but a weak lower back from a car accident). Can do sit ups all day long without stopping. : )
My 2020 ibis Ripley V4 Large is currently weighing in at 25.1 pounds. Differences are: GX groupset, i9 Enduro S carbon wheels w/ i9 hubs, 2.4 Ardent Front and 2.35 Rekon race rear, carbon ibis bar at 750mm length. The Rekon race does give up some traction but the tire is very fast. Hope this helps anyone trying to shed weight. I really didn't do much but you can get these bikes pretty light.
Nice. What type of riding do you do? Describe your common trails.
Did you purchase the adapter to match the manufacturer of the rotor or the caliper? I ask because I'm going to be putting a 200 mm rotor from SRAM onto an Ohlins fork that is native 180 mm. However, my brake calipers are from Shimano. I'm assuming the adapter has to fit the shape of the caliper but I'm not sure. Also, there are so many different adapter sizes from Shimano, it can be a bit tricky to get the right one. The only thing I know for sure is that I need an adapter that adds 20 mm (so plus 20 mm). However, Shimano's model designations are very confusing. Do I need the F180P or do I need an F203P. I can't tell which ones add 40 mm and which add the 20 mm I need.
Sorry. This is above my pay grade. I'd ask the fork manufacturer Ohlins for help. They should have answer.
Great video! This Will help with my future disk installation. One tip, and maybe I’m too used to the professional bike Chanels out there but it was really hard to see in your garage without additional lighting or something to give a brighter picture. Hope this helps with future content 👍🏻
Glad it helped. When I go pro, I'll let you know. : )
Perfect review, thank you very much!
Glad it helps. Still use this stand.
