5 Mirrorless Camera Features That Cinema Cameras NEED
I love the 500b. We took it in our last interviews for a documentary and used it we left the Aputure 600 in the case. Its size is crazy for the power it has. We used it with a 90cm lantern.
I use the Wooden Camera director’s monitor cage with a 7” monitor. It pretty much facilitates everything you need.
But that does make it pretty darn heavy. I tried the Kondor Blue solution (kondorblue.com/products/directors-monitor-pro-kit-mkii) and really liked it, but there was still no great place to mount the receiver.
Did you use any promist filter or similar on your lens? I was not expecting that window light to do much, but it actually worked great. Just discovered your channel and must say I'm very impressed! Quality content
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching! Nope - no pro mist at all, though that may give it an even dreamier look than we have here.
@@CurrenSheldon thanks for reply! One more thing - do you remember roughly what aperture you were at here for the a cam?
@@skyscraperphilosopher8476 Yep! Since I had the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 on there, my guess is that I had it speedboosted on the C70 and opened all the way up to f2, maaaaaybe f2.8.
@@CurrenSheldon great! I'm just getting into cinematography and want to recreate a setup like this in Norway. I got a couple Arri 2K tungsten fresnels for cheap and was thinking of using one of them for window light. Do you think this scene here would work if you used warm tungsten light from the window instead of daylight?
Do you have a video on how you built your director's monitor?
Funny you should ask. I do, as of 2-hours ago: ruclips.net/video/rgecYnl9LEs/видео.html
But the one I used in this video is a bit different - it's the Feelworld 10" monitor: bhpho.to/4eIwwzW - but it has a lot of the same features as the Portkeys I review in that video.
Beautiful set up and what a detailed walk through, man! Thank you! Would love to know, how you graded this particular scene/shot - these colors are 🔥!
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm not an incredible colorist, so I rely on some of my favorite LUTs as a starting point and then do my own thing from there. These are by far my favorite LUT pack: 55media.net/55mluts/
Very nice. I have a 6" Portkey which I really like.
Yea they make some great monitors. Definitely my favorite in that low to mid-budget range.
Gosh I am such an amateur, I needed this lol
What’s that portable monitor you are working with?
What a banger of a video
Appreciate that - Thanks for watching!
Wow. That's brilliant. Well done team.
Strangely, they haven't updated their bodies to be more boxy. It's getting very tall. I'm also surprised they haven't gone with two CFexpress B cards or at least one. I'd also like a better slow-motion option.
Reverse key means the key light is behind the subject to some greater or lesser degree(or very nearly so). If to a greater degree, then the subject will be significantly silhouetted. If to a lesser degree, they will be “short sided” where the short or narrow side of the face, further from camera is lit and the broad side closest to camera is in shadow. This setup does short side the subject slightly but it’s definitely not a reverse key as the angle between light and camera at the point of the subject is quite acute 5:22
Thanks for the comment, but I disagree. Reverse key is just having the light come from the opposite side of the subject/character as the camera side, so the light is falling across the subject's face, rather than shining directly on it. Doesn't really matter how far away the light is - sounds like you're defining back-light, which is a different than a reverse key light.
@@CurrenSheldon Ive always thought it meant behind or at least a very side angle to the subject close to 90 degrees . Not the just short sided , "up stage" lighting, which is the light raking across the face , as opposed to broad side lighting , which is the camera side of the face being lit.
13:26 just to be clear, you zoomed to crop but this did NOT create compression. Zooming just changes the angle of view which is what a focal length is all about. Compression only happens if you move the camera (essentially to maintain the size of the subject in the frame - think zolly) and then you’re experiencing the parallax effect that different focal lengths exhibit on the background when the position relative to the subject changes to maintain its size in frame. Without moving the camera, zooming (changing focal length) doesn’t compress anything (making the background appear farther or closer to the subject)
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 🤔- pretty sure changing your focal length, whether by switching out a prime lens OR zooming to a different focal length will change the compression. You've described just cropping in on the sensor or cropping in during post production - which would not change the compression of the lens. But, if zooming doesn't change the compression, that would mean there would be no difference in compression at the wide end to the tele end of a 100-400mm lens, which is definitely not true.
Have you tried to go a little wild in your interview setups? Let me know what you tried!
This is brilliant. I'm so bored of the same setups and have been thinking of breaking the rules to some extent. So hard to do when in every job you have to play it safe.
Doing something wildly different or daring really needs the correct project - but, as I said, 99% of producers/directors just want something to look nice. I hear ya.
I know projection can be overdone, but right of frame could have had a projected dappled light motivated from the windows or a motivated projection of the window frames. This would be super subtle though. Great shot though.
Oh yea that would be interesting to try. If I went back, I'd also add in another light or two to clamp to the lights in the background... THREE beams of light?! I'd be here for it.
8:36 - Panasonic has DGO in their G9ii and GH7 cameras too.
Doesn't achieve a look close to several of the cameras you mentioned and the rolling shutter is what made me sell my ronin-6d. It's versatile, but they need a global shutter and i'll go back to it.
I've been using the 8k version, which I think looks much, much better than the 6k version (probably resolution + OLPF + updated colors). I haven't found the rolling shutter to be a problem at all and have shot some boat-to-boat shots at 30-40mph. As well as running alongside professional runners.
Great breakout! I love it! I would probably go slight lower on back (hair light) as it looks slightly unnatural, but it is personal preference. Thank you for a great advice!
How do you turn on the level on the C80?
Interesting. I absolutely share your original view about cinema documentaries, to me the interviews are the least important and least interesting thing. They audio might be important but the interviewee is rarely in vision for very long. In fact I love the films of Asif Kapadia and find them a big influence (Senna, Amy, Diego Maradonna) and he purposely only uses the voices of interviewees and never shows their faces unless they are in some sort of archive or some sort of action. But watching this has given me a bit of perspective about what producers/production companies might be asking for, I am also not super confident in lighting interviews and probably should be!
Nice review. It’s a marvellous bit of kit. Definitely the newcomer to the game is thinking outside the box and it pays off. 5.02 is that Warsaw old town?
I don’t see a huge difference in DR when I’ve seen side by side C70 and C80, but there is something mysterious about that DGO sensor. It might be to do with roll off or something, there is just a kind of smoothness to the entire image which makes it feel a bit more filmic. That said, corporate clients don’t really care about things being filmic! And that is most of my money. I’m going to push the C70 for longer though, as I don’t think the C80 would drastically change my workflow right now but time might change that feeling. All of my clients have only said good things about the images I’ve made with the C70.
Stop showing the censor. I can already see dust on it! Don’t understand why people do this. Other than that, good video. Love my C70 and have an R5c so I can’t justify a C80 but I’d love one if I didn’t have the C70
I have a Canon 5d mrk4 ... I want to switch for low light video and stills.... but I still don't know which to get A7iv or Fx3 because I want to do both.... suggestions please
Just purchased the course.
Thanks so much! Looking forward to seeing you in there.
Thanks!
You got it!
Amazing video! Quick question, where do you find the setting to display the electronic leveler on the lcd for the C80? I can’t find it in the menu
5th option in the menu - custom display 1. (if it's at all similar to the R5C)
@ you are amazing! Thank you so much!
I tried the trial version and I'm not getting good results when I'm trying to upgrade AI generated videos from 720 to HD
Great video, and possibly the longest intro I've ever seen for a product review! Great work
Haha is that a good thing?! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
@ excellent presenting and overall production. Also very jealous of your setup 🤩
Good stuff. One critical thing I might add...in the clips from the Mission it was conceivable that what we were seeing in the background was the sun (or my eyes read it that way), albeit at the perfect angle. With your shot, it had the appearance that the sun was in the middle of the trees. I wonder if you have sneaked it up to the top of the window if it would lessen that effect and make it all feel a little more believable.
I had exactly the same thought
Great thought - I guess if you don't know how long these interviews usually take (as a normal viewer), you might assume that's the sun. Good thought on getting it up into the sky.
at 10:35 it is TB50 for DJI Inspire 2, Inspire 3 has TB51...
your course link is broken!!
Thanks so much! Just updated it: www.currensheldoncinematography.com/
Spielberg and David Lean are good examples of using less DOF to help make thew environmant tell part of the story. The environments in No country use that.
A perfect illustration. I’ll try to learn
This ain’t related but I made a very short film called shuffling time. And I just was just wondering if you could critique it
would be great if it could shoot vertical for social
Great comparison! I’m interested to see what you end up shooting with your c80!
where is true vertical filming on this camera ?
Hi Curren, I have a canon eos r that I still use professionally for videography and local business photography, would you advise me to invest in a c80 or a ronin 4d?
Good question - If have RF lenses and like the EOS R workflow, I'd go with a C80. It's an incredible camera and is ultimately more versatile than the Ronin 4D and easy to work with. BUT, if you find yourself doing A LOT of gimbal work and walking around, then the Ronin 4D could be a great fit. Just depends on the type of work you are doing.
@@CurrenSheldon thank you very much for your advice, and for your videos!
One of the films I was in back in 2009... We used the Canon 5D Mark II... I thought I was in Heaven... since I was used to being on sets that used REEL FILM... Bahaha WOW... such a difference... I love Canon Cameras.
What is this Magic that you speak of... I have never seen such Beautiful work... Thank you for this video.
So basically this is the C70 mark 2? The C70 has been my favourite camera that I have ever used. There was only 2 things I didn’t like was the mini XLR ports and having it hard to monitor audio properly without changing the settings so I can hear in both ears. It was very nice to handle for hand held footage even with it rigged up with a cage, 7 inch monitor and a mic. Even though I would personally of used a 5 inch. I love the slow motion, the battery life wasn’t brilliant but extremely useable, I was thinking of buying the C70 but now that the C80 is out? Is that the camera to go for?
thanks for sharing this Curren. I needed this reminder myself about my mindset when it comes to master interviews. I DP them quite often but don't value them as much as shooting verite.
LUMIX gh7 is dgo as well
I love the build and form factor of the C80 but I'm pissed Canon purposely crippled it to make room for the C400 :(
What did they hold back you were hoping for? A full-frame, 6k camera with internal raw (and lots of other features) for $5500 sounds pretty good to me.
@@CurrenSheldon Two SD card slots and no option for a CF express B slot that would allow for more internal raw options?!! That wasn't done by mistake or with compromise, it was a deliberate move by the Canon camera engineers along with limiting 6K to no higher than 30p. Sad Story!
Awesome review!
Thanks for watching!
Congratulations Curren. And thanks for the channel.
I mean, congratulations on fiding out what trully matters.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
A major feature the C80 is missing that C70 had is 120fps with audio. C80 recording mode S&F Clip / Audio is capped at 60fps.
@@HiDefJeff ah yes - good call. Hopefully they can add that easily enough via firmware.
@@CurrenSheldon Really hoping they do. It's a major feature for shooting action sports stuff!
No way 😮 I hope for firmware update before end of this year for Dakar 2025. I placed order just when they released C80, but my local dealer said in next two weeks 😏 Is it FF or S35 in 4k 120p?
@@MrLaky1234 You can do either FF or S35 in 120fps. You just cannot get audio with your 120fps in any crop factor, resolution or codec/bitrate. Hopefully enough people want this feature so Canon will hear us and bring it to us in a firmware update.
Lumix gh7 also has a dual gain sensor. I wonder who you could miss that, anyone knows that.
Are you talking about dynamic range boost mode? Not the same thing.
@davidells8146 it is the same thing, just another name
@@andersistbesser Haven’t found anywhere that says it’s actual DGO. Maybe you’re right and it’s the same thing but a different name, but probably a different hardware process.
@CurrenSheldon its the same thing, combining two ranges to one image with higher dynamic range, better highlight rolloff and all the other good things coming with it Just like canon and arri do. I am sure every brand does things a bit different if it comes to hardware but the outcome is the same. Dual gain sensor have something very special in their picture. I love the look.
I put my C70 through the ringer and I am always happy with what It can produce. The C80 just makes perfect sense as an upgrade especially with the triple base ISO. Was playing around with it in BH yesterday - only thing I wish they would add as an update is to disable the rear scroll wheel (not the big wheel, the small one by the thumb)
Yep it's an excellent camera. Though I still think I prefer the image from the C70, the extra detail will be more useful in more situations. Plus the C80 has all of the nice upgrades that make it a much more usable camera.
