I'm so glad you have taken the time to make all these videos my man! I'm in AOD and watch King Coal last night. Loved the Mallick inspiration in the impressionistic scenes. I'm looking forward to a video about the process of filming these scenes. Hybrid docs are my jam. I don't really like filming verite anymore. Being more creative and intentional is just so much more fun. Thanks again Curren!
Thanks so much for the note - and agreed, I loved the intentionality of King Coal and the few narrative films I’ve shot. And I’m going to do a series of videos directly and loosely related to King Coal, so let me know what you’d be interested in hearing more about. Thanks again for watching!
@CurrenSheldon amazing man! Thank you. I'd love to her about you and your wife's approach to the scenes with the girls, I wasn't sure if they were actors or not. But it didn't distract from the story. And what was your idea behind certain scenes. Cause I loved the non-linear editing in them to convey a feeling. Questions like did you just scout for nice locations and prompt the girls to do certain things. I've done that in two of my docs. After a while I find myself trying to make a narrative from someone's real story with them playing themselves, similar to The Rider. Thanks for reading. Have an awesome day.
You can’t go wrong with any Voigtlander lens. I shot with their full frame Nokton/Heliars for a while and they created some really breathtaking footage/photos.
Thanks for interesting video! Just ordered my first Voitglander but 40mm f1.2 for exceptional 3D rendering. But thanks to you now I am interesting in Heliar line
Hi, as always great video. Thanks for sharing. A while ago I seem to remember you mentioned a Mamiya lens that you felt may be one to look out for. I can't seem to remember where you mentioned that. Do you remember what lens it was?
@@CurrenSheldon Thanks for the suggestion on this lens! Love the look! Just purchased it and it's coming from Japan sometime next week in really great condition! I would love a set of SC Voightlander classic primes! I have the 35mm 1.4 Nokton Classic MC for my Leica M9. Should've gotten the SC version of it. I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point. Have you tried the Petzvals? Or Leica Rs? Or LOMO Standard Speeds? I actually think you would love the LOMOs!
Used the Nokton 25mm on my GH5, 4, 3… so It was always a go to. Had a hard time finding a replacement for it since i went full frame so I'll have to check this one out
Great video! I love your channel! I rocked the Heliar last year in a documentary in Rwanda. Have you come across a lens with a similar characteristic only wider? Voigtlander Classic 35 S.C. goes in that direction. Cheers.
Thanks for watching and glad you’re enjoying the channel! I have not found a lens that has similar characteristics, unfortunately. I’d love for Voigtlander to make a mini set of these Heliar Classics. At least a 24mm and 85mm. That would be amazing.
For most new lenses, and especially those made for Leica M Mount, it is pretty reasonable (on sale for $600-700 most of the time). But yes, expensive compared to vintage lenses - BUT, it is the only lens that does what it does, so if you want that look, it's your only true option.
Curren, have you made a video about that vest and monopod setup of yours? I was thinking of getting the Thanos SE with the DJI RS4, but was keen on getting a usage review of your setup of vest and monopod.
I have not made a video about that yet. I may make an updated stabilization video as I also just got a ReadyRig for a 45-lb camera package doing verite (not easy) and it seems to be working much better than an Easyrig. But the vest/monopod setup would be good to go into more detail and see if I can find some similar alternatives.
Depending on which clips you're referring to. King Coal was professionally graded, but everything else I graded with the 55m LUTS, which I love and use for almost everything: 55media.net/55mluts/
It's a pretty new lens (released in 2018/19, I believe), so I don't think there are any thoughts on lens variation in the way older, vintage lenses have. I have seen it on sale for around $600-700 fairly often, so I would wait until you see that. Currently on sale, I believe. I have also seen some like-new used versions on MPB for $400-500 - I don't think it has been hugely popular, so you can find some good prices if you just check every now and again.
For every 1000 videos I see about the Helios or Sirui Nightwalkers or Vespids or Nisi Athenas, and so many others, I've seen maybe two videos about this lens. But perhaps your algorithm is different.
What a picture from these lens! Mindblowing! Never heard of it. Thanks, my friend!)
It is epic! Thanks for watching

Wonderful, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Of course! More people should know about this lens.
I didn't realize you worked on "Summer's End." It's probably my favorite music video of all time. Kudos.
Aw thanks so much! And yep, I co-directed, shot, and edited that music video. That was a dream project.
You can’t go wrong with any Voigtlander lens. I shot with their full frame Nokton/Heliars for a while and they created some really breathtaking footage/photos.
I have used a few of the other Voigtlanders and agree they are great to use - but nothing looks and feels like the Heliar Classic.
Thanks for interesting video! Just ordered my first Voitglander but 40mm f1.2 for exceptional 3D rendering. But thanks to you now I am interesting in Heliar line

Were these shot on the C70 too?
Depends on which shots! All of King Coal and the studio stuff is C70. Everything that is 3:2 was shot open gate on the Panasonic S1H.

Yes there isn't a direct equivalent, but full-frame M Mount lenses from Voigtlander are a great place to start.

Curren, was that just a Rec709 color grade on the footage? I love the look. Appreciate the tip on this.

My goat lens for the gh5 is the voigtlander 17.5 nokton. Voigts definitely have character.
Oooh yes that f0.95 set is pretty sweet for MFT
Just got it!
Nice! You’re going to love it.
love it
Thanks!
Stop making me buy things 😆
haha my bad.
Any buying tips for the voigtlander? Certain model numbers to look for or versions that perform differently? Thanks!

Yeah but my last Helios cost me 20 bucks - and that had a camera attached 🤷♂️
The Helios is great, but the Voigtlander is a very different look.
Is there a list of the lenses that no one is talking about? Asking for a friend.
Haha I do not know. If you find it, please let me know where I can find it.
actually, everybody is and has been talking about this lens for a long time
