Highland Hikers
Великобритания
Добавлен 28 авг 2020
Welcome to the RUclips Channel of the Highland Hikers. We are Douglas and Alistair, and we hope you can join us as we explore our home country of Scotland. We are keen walkers and will be bagging a few Munros in addition to venturing through the less known trails and routes the country has to offer. We will be releasing videos on a bi-weekly basis and would love it if you could join us on our journey.
A Scorching Day on Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a'Chreachain | Bridge of Orchy, Rannoch Moor
The 20km+ route for Beinn Achaladair and Beinn a'Chreachain is already a reasonably big day out, but add in glorious sunshine and high temperatures and it becomes even harder. On the plus side, the views over Rannoch Moor to the many, many Munros beyond, as well as neighbouring Glencoe and the Buachaille, make for a spectacular day.

Within easy reach of the cities of the central belt and with an isolated position away from the other Border's hills, Tinto is an extremely popular and straightforward hill. Heading to Gairich tomorrow and this has helped the prep tremendously. Thank you :) ps Carrot Cake wins every single time !!!
Awesome, hope you have a great hike 😃
Tips on parking?
I did this hike before parking became more of an issue, however parking on the verges of the road will result in parking fines. My advice would be to check recent forum posts to see what the current situation is for the small car park.
James Watt was originally the first engineer who was asked to build the water supply to greenock. He said it couldn't be built. Robert Thom did it
Every day is a school day
Good view over to the Paps of Jura from there as I remember, or does Ben Vane obscure it?
It may do, but looking at the OS map you could potentially see it just to the right of Ben Vane.
@@HighlandHikers I reckon it was from the summit of Ben Vane I’ve viewed them from then. Like you, I did both peaks in quick succession though not on the same day.
Great video. I did Ben Vane today. Misty and drizzly at higher levels and no views :-( I tried to get to that wooden structure near the car park but it was all fenced off. Not sure why. Anyway thanks for the excellent videos guys
It didn’t look the best of days even at home, very changeable sadly. Sometimes you have to pay for a view with a hike like that, or so it feels from time to time. Looks like there is some repair work ongoing at the pyramid. Worth a wee look if you’re passing that way again.
@@HighlandHikers I still need to do Ben Vorlich so maybe the pyramid will be repaired by then. Thanks again for the excellent videos.
Well done Alistair. Did it many years ago and couldn’t remember any of it apart from the bog!! You were clearly lucky to have it so dry. Might do it again one day. Thanks for sharing.
The first time I hiked it the bog was very wet, but I feel that once you’re above it the mountain is great. On this occasion it was a glorious midweek day when there wasn’t another soul to be seen.
Excellent well produced video. Well done.
Thanks Hugh!
Don't start at the wrong car park!
Thanks for watching
I was a bit dubious watching this if I'm honest Alistdair not for any other reason apart from having a nightmare myself. Three weeks ago I done both of these in superb conditions great views in every direction, basically everything we could want. Sadly on the return section the weather took a turn for the worst and on the final section at the bottom of the glen adjacent to Beinn an Dothaig I fell and broke my right arm and caused a huge amount of pain. Thankfully help was on hand and the situation quickly resolved. Haven't managed back out as I'm still in recovery. Thankfully I'm getting there and have received excellent hospital treatments. Unfortunately for me despite these being two absolute stunning munros I will not return for a repeat given the set of circumstances. Really good video as always mate, sorry about ranting but it took a bit of courage for me to relive. ATB look forward to seeing you soon for another adventure
That sounds like quite the ordeal, and not one any of us would wish to happen on any hiker. Good to hear that help was close by and that you’re recovering. Hopefully it won’t be long before you’re back out again. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Been to Rubha Robhanais (Butt of Lewis). Sat there for five hours in 'shirt sleeves'. See forty miles ; beaustiful clear cool Hebridean light, on a bright sunny day. No pub/bar/cafe, just a car park. Also Abhain Dearg ( Red River) distillery. . Super, Smashin', Great!!!! Mar sin leat/
Very nice 😃
Lovely video dude! Great job! Hopefully catch you on a hill someday :)
I hope so too!
66% of the time they're right 100% of the time. You should bottle that comment Alistair 🦨😅
Can’t miss an opportunity to quote the classics!
Yum Yums, so big they were named twice.😂 And a wee caramel nibble🤭
Lol a nibble. I’ll have you know it required 2 bites to finish!
The snacks are a draw on this one, both excellent quality. My parents grew up in the north and my mother had to wait until mid 20th century before electricity arrived. This was the Riconch area.
The majority of us probably take things like electricity for granted, not realising that even close to home people were only recently connected to the grid.
Wonderful video - engaging and great soundtrack. Did those two on a miserable day last year (couterclockwise) and crossed the river over a dodgy steel beam - presume it’s now gone but wouldn’t fancy doing that again. (We used rope to be on the safe side!). As for cream slices. / nice choice and good compensation for a 16 mile hike!
There’s a brief glimpse of whats left of the beam in the video, its lying in the water now. Thank you for the kind words ☺️
@@HighlandHikers just as well. I reckon it was an accident waiting happen.
Wondered why i didn't see much of yourselves 👍🏻
Back out more regularly again now
Nice one, a great solo adventure.
Thank you
Thanks for uploading, Alistair. Good choice on the summit snacks. Hope the wee midges didn't get you too bad. 🏴🏔👍
Glad you enjoyed it ☺️ the summit snack lasted seconds, I wolfed it down. Midges weren’t as bad as they’ve been in the past thankfully
Fantastic video and music
Thanks Paul
Hi Alistair. Wonderful view, brilliant walk and a mega summit snack. That was long on old pull up the Glen at the start. Great stuff mate, all the best, Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴🏴
I really wish I had taken the north side path, would have made a world of difference but in the end I forgot all about it after the second summit and the views it offered. Thanks for the comment Dave 😁
Awesome video Alistair as usual. Loved the drone shots and loved the summit snack. Well done. ATVB Alan
Thanks Alan, the snack went down a treat even though it was well melted
Well done Alistair, great video, you’re looking well 💪
Thank you 🙌 ☺️
Loving those drone shots. You didn't happen to get eyes on my crashed drone at the summit of Beinn Achaladair did you? 🤣Great video as ever 👍
Thank you! I didn’t see it unfortunately, think I would be pretty gutted to lose mine too.
Cracking haven’t done these Munro’s yet have walked to Gortons bothy taking the beginning of your route to get to fantastic views mate cheers
Forgot to mention a blank red orange screen with a capital T displayed appeared twice when you showed the OS map on the video not sure whether it’s my TV cheers
I missed most of the views when walking in because of the low lying cloud sadly, but I felt the rest of the walk made up for it. My bad on the orange screen!
There’s also a clip on my channel of our night at the Gorton bothy the river crossings weren’t easy lol
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍3
Many thanks!
Nice one Alistair 👍
Thanks 👍
Just found your channel after doing my first Munro - Ben Lomond a couple of weeks ago. Wetted the appetite for more Scottish adventures. Love the format, good arming advice and great to see what the paths look like on the ground. Enjoying summit snacks too - we tend to hip flask Whisky. Keep up the good work- loving it!
Thanks Janine! Good luck with your Scottish adventures 😃 We’ve had the occasional whisky on summits, although tend to keep that for special milestones.
Great video. Did Buachaille Etive Beag last month and I’m going to plan and do this mountain soon!
Thanks Tom. This one is a belter and my personal favourite of the two.
I was told that the ruined house once belonged to lord darnley who married mary queen of scots . Don't know if they both lived there after getting married.
Very interesting! Love an old ruin, makes you wonder about what happened there over the years.
Nice one lads👍
Thanks Jimmy!
What exactly is a Stalker’s Path? I’m going with the brownie. Glad you made it through The Fear!
Thanks Seth! It’s a path used by people participating in Deer Stalking - hunting essentially. It’s quite popular in highland estates. It’s a British term, which is probably why you haven’t come across it before.
Nice one. Can't avoid the clag every time, but great views while it lasted. . Brownies the winner this time!
Yeah, it is Scotland after all! Thanks ☺️
Another nice video both well done if you ever return to this Munro I recommend descending north from the summit to the Munro top Sgurr mhaoraich beag for the wonderful view down loch hourn and it’s nice to return to the start by going over Am Bathaich and zig zag down to road well done stay safe Look forward to you next video
Thanks Andrew! That’s the route we’d have taken if the conditions had been better, so will definitely be keeping it in mind if we ever return.
Hi Gents, blimey that’s a tough one this week, can I please have a brownie……and a slice of Battenberg 😋🥾⛰🏴
Haha, of course you can Dave 😄
excellent lads , heading up there this weekend ....
Thanks Craig, hope you get good conditions 🤞
10:35 Stunning vista. Nice one lads.
Thank you ☺️
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍8
Thanks!
Brownie thingy, not the biggest fan of Battenburg. Clag seems a feature of 2024, got to make the best of it. Unless you've done the Knoydart Munros before, you'll have to pass that way again (unless you access them via Inverie). Thanks for uploading, guys. 🏴🏔👍
Thanks Nick! I’ve done the Knoydart munros back in 2014 - took the ferry from Mallaig to Inverie. Alistair still needs to do them at some point, so may very well be back 😃
Stunning video guys. The summit snack for me must be Mr Kiplings. Well done on bagging newer munros. Am out this weekend. Can't wait. ATVB Alan
Thanks Alan, enjoy your weekend!
Battenburg for me.
A good choice for sure!
You missed out Harris tweed!! Just found you guys so will be binge watching to catch up now 😉 The Hebrides are on my bucket list, fell in love with them over 30 years ago reading the Lillian Beckwith books, I must read them again!
Thanks Viv! We’ll need to go back some time and visit Harris tweed 😄
Great video, the yum yums are the clear winner on this day, hopefully get to these two later in the year
Thanks Derek. Even I would vote for the yum yum 😂 these 2 are a great day out, yet another beautiful part of the country
Cracking lads two fantastic Munro’s I did these clockwise in winter fab views cheers
Thanks Andrew. What was the descent like?
The decent was fine we descended diagonally from Spidean Mialach summit down to large loch then found a hydro road that took us back to the road the ascent was great as you are aware there a great stalker’s path to climb up to first Munro chers
@andrewkingdom doesn’t sound too bad at all!
Well done Guy's 👍
Thanks Jimmy
Cracking video of a stunning walk, guys. And I think splendiferous is a fair description of those yum-yums!
Thanks Irene. We both really enjoyed the yumyums, they were a welcomed treat.
@@HighlandHikers hi boys, I was fortunate enough to have dry weather for my clockwise walk, I found the stalkers path made for a relaxing ascent!!!!.🏴👍😎😎🏴
Sounds like a good day
Two cracking Munros and a great day out. Totally agree on anticlockwise route around these hills. Like to get the road walk and walk in out of the way first plus the track down from 2nd Munro brings you directly back to the car park. Would have to go with the caramel thingy as a summit snack. Thanks for uploading, guys.🏴🏔👍
I wouldn’t fancy coming down off of the first summit we did if the ground was damp. I can imagine the grass would be rather slippery! The caramel shortcake was amazing!
"Dove to Fort William to get the Park Run in" - classic
Some things never change! Now that I’ve done one he wants me to do a parkrun before an 18km hike!
Those Yum Yums looked bloody magic 🐷
They really were Alastair, we both thoroughly enjoyed them!
Awesome video guys. Loved the drone footage. Just fantastic as usual. When it comes to the summit snack. Well I've got to say the yum yum just cause of the size 😂😂. Enough to share lol. Well done to both of you on bagging new munros. Looking forward to the next one. ATVB Alan
Thanks Alan, we appreciate the comment! The yumyum was the better of the 2 to be fair to Dougs.
Hi Gents, what a fantastic area, some stunning views there, especially those opening shots, WOW! As for summit snacks, I think this week it’s an honourable draw, both looked very tasty. All the best Dave 😀🥾⛰🏴🏴
Thank you Dave. Its another beautiful part of the country.
