- The Striding Arches are a spectacular sight, situated on the tops of hills around the abandoned village of Cairnhead, near Moniaive in the South of Scotland. Built by the landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy using locally sourced stone they represent the emigration of Scots to countries such as Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
‘The stone is a potent symbol of the Scots who went abroad, of the tremendous upheaval they made, or were forced to make, when they left Scotland... I would hope that collectively these arches are a celebration and monument to the Scottish people and the travels they have made, and that they will act as a connection between those who have left and those who have stayed here.’ - Andy Goldsworthy

Thank you! 😊
👋 Good morning! ❄ Thank you for taking us on this beautiful winter walk in Dumfries and Galloway to see the amazing Striding Arches by Andy Goldsworthy. 🏞 It's fascinating to learn about the history of the area and how the landscape has changed over the years. 👍 Thank you for sharing this adventure with us! 🙌
Thank you for watching
Great video, appreciate what you guys do! Music was nice too.
Thanks Douglas
Excellent video!,I remember my dad taking me to see the striding arches when I was younger fantastic walks. brilliant hills in Dumfries and Galloway can recommend Cairn Table it's right at the bottom of East Ayrshire near dumfries and Galloway great hill get a great view of Tinto from it.
We often feel they are overlooked in favour of the mountains in the north, but they often offer great days out. Will have a look at that one for a future walk.
@@HighlandHikers Yes I agree, bonus is they are always nice and quiet so you can get most of the hills to yourself!.
hello, Great video, appreciate what you guys do! Music was nice too. thanks
Our pleasure!
You're right - definitely more trees than you usually have in your videos! Actually the hills you are walking in remind me of the northwestern United States, which have that great mix of big hills and tall pines. Those arches are interesting - they look so out of place you'd think they were dropped there by an ancient people.
They are very peculiar against the landscape, but interesting nonetheless. One day we will pop over for some hiking in the States and see what we are missing!
I really enjoyed this video with my hot chocolate . debs xx ........
A cup of tea warmed me up at the end!
