It's the barrel, Stupid! 7mm Rem. Mag. 190g Berger
So my question is . Is it worth putting a highend barrel on a factory action ?
If it is a quality receiver that has been blue printed............
It is pretty easy these days to learn how to shoot well. Some people are looking for the rifle to provide an excuse for lack of education. You might say it is a feature in factory guns.
Question ~ just kinda theorizing on a possibility that if a guy is fortunate enough to come across a hummer barrel and eventually shot it out, would it be worth the time to have that known to be accurate barrel and have it re-bored and re-rifled to the next caliber or whatever the rebarreler could make due with?
No..........they make new ones every day.
Did I understand that correctly; that Schmidt & Bender turned into Tangent Theta? BTW, I’m sticking with straight power scopes for my long range shooting. Or at least until I sharpen my skill set There is something about familiarity from shot to shot to shot with a consistent sight picture at any given distance Keep up the excellent informative videos
Two different companies...............Thanks.
Sitting in South Africa and enjoying all the vids. Binge watching really. All my Hunting rifles has Custom barrels on them. But no one goes through the effort and precision that this man does. And I find the banter pretty funny with the wife.
Sincerely appreciated.........we really do hate each other!
Very nicely presented information. I would prefer 5 shots, but impressive for 3 none the less. I think throat wear in the 6.5/284 is that the long steep shoulder focuses the heat in the throat area more so than a case with a normal diameter shorter and less steep shoulder angle. Standard cases have a shorter and more direct entrance to the throat area than say a short magnum. Think of porting the heads on an engine for better air flow. Short, less angled ports flow better than those with longer higher bend angle ones. An example is the high throat wear in the Winchester short magnum line. Add to the poor case shape the extra 10K psi of breech pressure allowed in SAMI specs, caused rifle makers to chrome plate the bores for acceptable barrel life. Me, I think I will stick with my 300 H&H mag bullgun and a twin of it in 30/06. Time tested and still shoot as well as I like to see on the 800yrd range I shoot at.
Vid starts around 11:00
aint that the truth... 7mm rem mag is way better than 7mm prc
Only if set up properly..................thanks.
High end optics company you won’t mention must be Zero Compromise. Fine people over there at ZCO.
Did you end up buying that 7 Mag from the customer?
Tried.............he was too smart to sell. Thanks.
I never stepped into cartridge design before, but now starting to look at precision long range. Can you please educate me more details about why you think 7 rem mag is more properly designed than the 7 prc? From video here, I get your conclusion but want to see the reasoning.
Too much for this format..............use another. Thanks.
Factory guns aren't advertised as 1/4 minute eather, but I've had two that would shoot 1/2 minute.
Excellent..............would you like to show on video?
@@quarterminutemagnums 1 inch groups at 400 yds is 1/4 minute by my math..sako long range 7 mag, berger handloads.
Hunting gun also 9.5 lbs
Must have a good barrel.👍
You can get good factory guns.
Luck of the draw............Thanks.
@ I’ve had good luck with the Savage 110. Seekins makes a decent rifle too
Awesome workout sessions 😄👍🏻
Thanks...........just gets harder.
@ Yes! I turned 53 back in December and I really notice how much my eyesight has depleted in past couple of years
I think you misspoke when you said your Hart rest was from the barrel maker located in New York. Although they are the same family, the rest is built by R. W. Hart out of Nescopeck, Pa. From what I can find online the barrel maker side of the family doesn’t make a rest. Both are outstanding companies. A lot of people aren’t aware of 2 separate Hart gun companies. Love your videos and amount of detail you share.
Correct - thanks.
Man, you kicked a hornets nest with this one 😂
Cool video
Ever shot a Tikka Boomer?
Cheap old guns can be great,I have a old savage 340 in 222 rem. Will put most bench guns to shame and I have another one that is birdshot.i will never buy a new gun, made in the 50tys and 60tys in hunting rifles is it.
If you happen to have a borescope and you want to see a horror show, take a look through any factory button rifled barrel. Sometimes you don't even need a borescope you can just look at that end of the barrel and see chatter marks so bad that it looks like it was rifled with a rasp file. As much as people say Savage rifles shoot well out of the box, looking at the rifling you'd never know that because they are some of the worst. Actually, one of the reasons factory Savage guns shoot decently is because they usually have tighter headspace on the chambers than other guns due to the way the barrels are installed. So then what's the difference between that and a match grade lapped barrel? It's going to be the consistency. Sure that factory Savage gun might shoot okay, but if you put 10 5 shot groups on paper at the same time, the likelihood of flyers is going to be way higher. The likelihood of accuracy diminishing as the bore gets fouled is going to be way higher. And that's just the barrel, with better guns also comes better triggers and better triggers are going to be more accurate. Better actions are going to be more reliable and smoother. Better guns have better stocks or chassis, and that's going to lead to better consistency and more accuracy.
Been there, done that..........true. Thanks.....
Forty years ago my buddy had the best of the best of the best audio equipment for home use that money could buy. What he wouldn’t accept was that the human ear is actually pretty shItty in comparison to the quality his equipment could produce. The specs on paper were lost by the human ear, he could have paid a quarter of what he did and not been able to discern the difference. The point I’m making is the factory firearms will outperform the abilities of probably 99% of the shooters out there, so what is the benefit of spending three or four times the cost to produce a firearm that can outperform almost all the end users out there. Very few shooters are competitive bench-rest shooters and most of the “serious” bench-rest guys out there use a shooting sled which negates any real skills. If your building for the 1000 meter club great, but don’t shit on a guys “junk” factory rifle when he takes a moving buck at 250 yards from a standing position cause that is where the real respect goes!
Missed the point entirely........
Shooting at 6:00 a.m., no common courtesy I'd say that's being a jerk
My job, my property..........freedom is the ability to move.....
Loving all the comments! Keep the great videos coming.
It’s funny because all I shoot is Krieger Barrels and all mine shoot hole in hole. 243 Win, 243 Ackley, 260 Remington, and a 7 MM Rem Mag. Mike Lau from Texas Brigade Armory does all my gun work. Your gun smith is very critical. He always ask me to give him 5 rounds of ammo and load them the way I want the COAl at. So I set them as long as I can so they still feed good in my mag. He calls me and says it’s ready to be picked up and gives me back all 5 rounds of upshot Ammo with my gun which I thought was weird the first time. I didn’t understand why he wanted me to load the ammo if he wasn’t going to shoot it. All I know is I never have any complaints. If I remember correctly he said he checks the throat and custom fits it for the length of the bullets. I’m no gun smith and don’t claim to be so maybe I’m saying it wrong. All I know is when I get my guns back is they shoot like crazy. I do believe his son is a gun smith now as well in Stephenville, Texas. Mike Is in Mingus, Texas. If anyone is looking for a great gun smith in that area I would highly recommend them. This guy that took the time to do the video seams to be a good gun smith himself. Thanks for sharing sir.
*laughs in Ruger precision*
Douglas Barrels were on the Ruger 77’s.
So interesting, could listen to you all day.👍🏿
Appreciated........thanks.
Excellent content Heard about you guys through Reloading Weatherby Questions ~ I’m working on putting together a 6mm-06 standard or Ackley. Or a 6mm-284 Anyway, I’m not too keen on putting a break on it What measures can one take in order one can keep one’s sight picture out to distance? Say, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 I worked for a gunsmith back in the mid-90’s and learned a fair amount Somewhat antiquated technology but it was common to put mercury recoil reducers in the buttstock Besides adding weight to forend and such, what do you suggest? Maybe you would be interested in putting this rifle together?? I currently have the receiver Working on barrel, stock, etc
Thank you...........
F-Class midrange, aspiring for long range competition, 6GT, Alpha brass srp: - trimmed brass aft ever firing (Henderson) - 4 to 5 firings before brass trimming resulted in only cleaned edges. seems like a lot of flow. - with a minimum spec chamber, is brass expansion & spring back, seen with minimum or no trimming being needed? - new to the channel, grateful for sharing and elaboration. - Thank you.
I'm getting seasick!!
Agreed 100 %, thanks for the input 👏👏👏
1.5" groups seems silly for a new rifle, most of my surplus Mausers do that with factory match ammo
BS. I saw my uncles 222 rem put bullets dead in the bullseye everytime. He had the closest to a perfect bullseye and smallest 5 shot group!
Just a spoonful of sugar......
I have a Remington 700 Magpul. 308 win 22” 5R Barrel. Factory rifle, and it shoots clover leafs at 100 meters w/ factory gold medal match 175’s. It was my first rifle that I bought new, in 2017. I fucking love that rifle. It is rare to get a factory rifle that shoots like it does. When I shoot that barrel out one day, I’ll be putting a 26” bartlein 6.5cm, 6cm or 6GT on it. Then it’ll be a custom rifle 😉
After you blueprint the receiver, replace the bolt, 6 screw rail, surface grind a replacement lug, replace trigger, professional bedding job, etc......then it will be a rebuilt factory gun. Thanks............
And when you get the bill for truing up that 700, you’ll wish like crazy you had just started with a nice custom action. 700s were good starting points before the world was full of custom grade actions for very reasonable prices.
@@quarterminutemagnums it’s got a trigger tech special 2 stage in it. Currently sitting in an aluminum bedding block. Will soon be dropping it into a chassis for adjustability & modularity sake.
@@HoffnerPrecision honestly I wouldn’t waste money on trueing a 700 action. I own three of them. 2 stainless, one carbon cerakoted. The stainless actions are better smooth. The cerakoted one came with an oversized bolt knob from factory. And they all came with good barrels. Accuracy is in the barrel. Smoothness and strength is in the action. These factory actions will serve me well, even when I re-barrel the 308 & re-barrel the 22-250. I will eventually do a full custom build & when that time comes I’ll start with either an impact precision 737, defiance, or KS arms 3 lug action (support local). End goal is to re-barrel the 308 when I shoot it out to a 6.5. Re-barrel the 22-250 to a 22 cm, 22 Gt or a 22 arc. And do a complete custom build for a 6 mill prs rifle and do another for a 7 mil hunting rifle. I have a 270 wsm Remington 700 that I would like to keep near factory. I replace all my triggers & free float the barrels.
@ that’s probably as god a plan as any if you (like most of us) are dealing with a finite amount of money. I disagree that accuracy is in the barrel. You have to have a good barrel, but a good barrel doesn’t perform up to its potential with a bad trigger, an untrue action, poor stock, sub-par ammo, inadequate scope rings, and cheap sub-par scope. I’ve never seen a factory 700 action that was making good contact on both bolt lugs. Never seen a bolt face that was perfectly perpendicular to the bolt body. Never seen barrel threads that were concentric with the bolt. Every one of those variables adds just a little internal variation to every shot, and variations never equal consistent accuracy. How much difference does it make? Sometimes a lot, sometimes it makes so little that most shooters would never know the difference. I true my own 700 actions because my labor is free to me and I enjoy it. But I never recommend that someone pay to true a 700 action instead of buying a custom one.
And custom guns are a waste of money. 🤣 If $8000 is couch change, then get a dozen custom rifles. For hunting, most factory blasters are capable of consistently killing animals at sensible ranges if the shooter has paired it with a quality scope, uses the ammo the gun likes, and practices a lot.
Some guys have dozens.......even hundreds.
awesome
Got a savage 110 persicion 308 lapua and bergers/sierras 1 hole all day long.
Got any pictures of your groups. Shouldn't be a problem posting a picture.
Blah blah blah I made both of my Ruger precision 6 mm and 338 lapua mag both shoot half inch groups they're not junk there is no reason to shoot anything better than that period
Ever been to ANY competitive match???????????
I have to know, are you a Virgo ♍️?
Are you Gig Gangle, January 1980?
@quarterminutemagnums just answer the question.
When I competed actively in Benchrest back in the early 1980s with 6 PPC and 6mm International, I would often bring along 3 new barrels for each rifle. In practice and qualifying, I could identify the best of the three in each caliber. If I wasn't shooting in the .100", it would not make the cut.
Appreciated............thank you.
I'm going to show this viedo to my wife so she can see for herself that all my rifles are junk and I need all new one's..
😂🎉
When you know you can shoot and know you can build super accurate rifles. You know something else isnt working.. such a great video! Learn something every day! Thanks for the video
Keen as to see a reamer video! You've got so much knowledge and every bit of info is great!
I have two cz 600 alphas and 2 thompson center compasses gen 2s and one palmetto gen 2 ar10 6.5 creedmoor shooting cheap winchester ammo and one savage 17wsm a 6.5 creedmoor in a winchester xpr in factor rifles I've got lucky with them being a hammer can't complain I have a 243 win ar10 with a Saturn barrel 22 inch boy that barrel is nasty accurate got a few more after market barrels I love on a few more of my custom bolt guns two from heart barrels where I live can't complain.
Hart Barrels.........................thanks.
Good video ! (i screen shot a lot of the best) Yes may want to read "Winning Through Intimidation" by Robert J Ringer (Really about how people WILL lie to you - when it profits them /or benefits Them 😢)
Hard truth is not popular or profitable..........
In the 36 minute range… The difference between the black and silver areas is where the bullets are contacting vs not. I’ve seen many (most) barrels show that the bullets don’t actually fully extrude to the lands/grooves shape. usually not touching next to the lands. most notable in long used fully blued barrels. Evenness? Probably some matter of a microscopic misalignment in machining or bend causing the projectiles to ride ever slightly to one side??? 🤷♂️ The damage?? I want to know also…
I must be real lucky cause every factory bolt action rifle I’ve owned will shoot under MOA consistently at a 100m ,some some sub half MOA, with the right load. Often it takes some running in, a bedding job on the action and rail and or a stock change but all are capable. No doubt you get what you pay with a custom, but most of us can be very effective at distance with a well set up factory rifle.
1 moa used to be a benchmark for an “accurate” rifle for most anyone other than BR guys. Emphasis on used to be. I have many factory rifles that shoot sub moa groups often. But I also have custom rifles that have never shot a group over moa including load work ups. There is a difference.
I have a couple 1/2 MOA factory rifles. But the difference for me is they are 1/2 MOA 3 shot group rifles. Then the barrel heats up and you never know what will happen. Fine for hunting because I almost never need a second shot. Match quality barrels hold tight groups even when they warm up.
Custom rifles such as Scott builds are a real bargain for what a competent shooter is looking for. Unless the action gets ran over by a train or something really unreal and catastrophic happens the action is a one time purchase that will last a lifetime and countless barrels. Im just like most people in that can't make myself afford a custom rifle but it is a great deal for what you get. I really like one of the videos from the past when Scott and Vicky(hope i spelt that correctly) broke down the prices and cost of a rifle build. QMM's labor rate aint much. Keep videos coming, i really enjoy them.
BAT receiver could be re-barreled hundreds of times - never wear out. Sincerely appreciated..........thank you.
300 wsm would be amazing.
Dude, nobody is buying your bs. Machining is so advanced these days that most manufacturers can produce quality barrels at a low cost.
Krieger, Bartlein, Brux ???????????? Pay attention........
