Nice job with the drone shots
Thanks a ton! 🙏
Another person left it not the people that abandoned it
Holyoke's a dump. Poorly governed and loaded with oodles and oodles of gimme people.
They only just opened that Westfield Friendly's last summer? I think? Oddly they closed 2 other Friendly's shops in wastefield, 1 by the interstate and 1 in a stripmall just down the street from that one....this town makes NO sense!! Edit: ...bro, can't believe you missed the opportunity to get footage of the giant "FRIENDLY'S" shrubbery on the side of I-90...
I know! Ugh, I regret that as well! Should’ve at least gotten some drone shots of that!
sounds about right..... grounds contaminated by all sorts of industrial chemicals...... Big-brained town "Official" = "we're gonna turn that location into a public park!....eh?....eh?" everyone else =
Very cool video and sick graffiti in the area. I think you can go up see the tunnel/flooded part if you take the ladder from the bottom of the silo, as seen in 8:14. Happy New Year, J-MASS!
Thank you so much! Yeah, somehow while filming I missed that ladder haha… next time!
No wonder why moxie tastes like cough medicine…
I liked the troll hair reveal at the beginning of the video. 😂 I'm surprised you didn't do your classic J-MASS echo sound check "yo, what's going on guys" inside the silo.
Hahaha you’re right, I forgot to do that! Damn! 😂 That would’ve been perfect… oh well, next time I find a room with worthy reverb, I’ll be sure to properly take advantage of the echo!
Hey J-Mass, always been intrigued with the way you explain things, that's kinda why I find you very unique from other people, (no hate to other hardworking creators ofc, only an observation). Are you by any chance a sales person or a person who presents things a lot, only because you talk so well, and repeat main points very well during the times in the videos where you describe face-to-face. I find it very admirable. I want to know how you talk like that, professional, a bit repetitve at times, but very professional.
Thank you so much, I truly appreciate the kind words and the observation! You are actually right on the money-I do work in sales! Specifically, in the realm of logistics. I also went to university for English, and did a lot of public speaking. I definitely have flaws-I often repeat things, and sometimes I stutter or say the wrong thing-but overall I try to be as clear and understandable in my presentation as possible!
I remember seeing a milk can building on Rt 138 in Massachusetts back in the late 90's when on the way to Raynham park. Wonder if it is still there?
I was married twice in this church, I will look up pictures and post them…
I bet it is much better looking in the spring and summer. Good vid!
Thanks! And yes, this place is very cool to see with all of the summer foliage fully grown!
I’m 71 years old. I lived there be where there was interstate 91. Most kids in town were always told to stay away from there even when it was new because it in a pretty deserted place even now it was in till the last two years that I ever heard it linked with anniversary Field Road as I always cut between Scott’s tower And anniversary field it has been re-done at least three times in my lifetime but it isn’t really a safe place never was. Wayback in the late 70s the state police arrested a man who had murdered several women down in the Boston area and they arrested him on the grounds of Scott tower he had been hiding in a basement of a very large and elegant house let across the highway. It’s far is the piss that’s the thing I remember about it the first time I saw it at seven and it’s never changed. The views from the top our brain but honestly I don’t know anyone that does it there. Thanks for reporting on it
Love to know what supossed tech problems that the commander had ?
One quick thought - when you pan around, pan much slower. It would help a lot.

Flew planes there in 2010 with the Green Mountain flyers
Guys used to fly RC Planes there. There was a club and was done legally. Went to a few gatherings there to fly.
I believe tiny tim died on stage in montague. tiptoe through the tulips.
I read about that on Wikipedia while researching the town! Yeah, he had a severe heart attack while on stage in Montague.
my mistake, he had his first heart attack on stage in montague, pretty dramatic, but survived and came back long enough to perform and suffer another attack that killed him in minneapolis (from wikipedia)
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ thanks for another great exploration Jason and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family 🎄✌️🇺🇲
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well, thank you for tuning in as always! 🎄 🎅 ❄️ 🎁
J-MASS risked becoming the Toxic Avenger to make this video.
LOL with the amount of EPA-certified toxic locations I’ve visited on this channel, it’s only a matter of time before I get my super powers! 😂
Dude I drove right passed this last week without knowing it was there…. I went to north adams for work and I remember driving passed that green bridge looking out at the river. Actually I went right passed the hoosac tunnel sign and I immediately remembered your video, thought to myself damn that monster is right below me. Such a sick area
Fr dude, Western Massachusetts is amazing! Yeah, that huge green bridge you passed spans over the Turners Falls Dam, and connects the towns of Gill and Montague. Very scenic views from that bridge! And the Hoosac Tunnel, of course, is a classic location!
@@j-mass the French king hwy bridge is insane too
Love that bridge! Very nostalgic for me as well; I used to drive across it every summer as a kid!
You sound kinda.... dumb
When it comes to planes, I absolutely am! I don’t know much about the technical aspect of planes, sadly… my knowledge is primarily centered around the history itself.
@j-mass Circumstances: While in cruising altitude on a flight from Chatham to Newark, the captain informed ATC about the failure of the left engine and was cleared to divert to the nearest airport located in East Greenwich, east Rhode Island. Unable to maintain a safe altitude, the crew attempted an emergency landing when the aircraft stalled and crashed in a field. A passenger was killed while five other occupants were injured. Probable cause: Inadequate preflight preparation and/or planning on part of the pilot-in-command. The following factors were reported: - Improper operation of powerplant and powerplant controls, - Improper operation or failed to use the anti-icing/deicing equipment, - Conditions conducive to carburetor system icing, - Icing conditions including sleet and freezing rain, - Low ceiling and snow, - Partial loss of power on one engine, - Complete engine failure on one engine, - Left engine lost power, propeller feathered. Unable to maintain safe altitude.
Nothing wrong with the Rockwell 500 series.... the pilot in command caused the accident.
The Rockwell 500 series used piston engines. 540 or the continentals.
Propeller turbine?
Ive been out there , really kooly seeing interest in our beautiful big state! ✌️
will all those old mills around - there has to be a good bottle dump in the vicinity...
Oh yeah, I bet! Must be hidden around there somewhere!
Loved this. I love how you give history also. Not a lot of urbex folks do that.
Thanks a ton! In my opinion, history is the most fascinating part of urban exploration! So many forgotten historical footnotes that can be discovered while investigating these abandoned sites!
I grew up in TF and live in greenfield now
Very nice! I love Greenfield, especially Poet’s Seat Tower!
@ not much to explore there though. When I was a kid turners had tons of abandoned buildings to explore, they seemed massive to us at the time. But almost all of them have been razed.
I live right near this place. It’s been closed for as long as I can remember.
I believe the house was abandoned in the 1980s but I’m not sure. I was passing it one day with my (then) boss about eight years ago and he said that it’s looked like that for maybe 40, or even, 50 years (he’s 84 years old now). It’s near a busy road so I’m surprised it’s still there.
Old tvs should have a manufactured date on the back of it. Also across the river in russell but maybe in another town there is another old abandoned house. You can see it driving down the hill past Woronoco towards Russell
Oh, fascinating! I’ve driven that route before a few times, but I don’t think I’ve noticed it-will keep an eye out!
It didn’t last long, 1989- 1996.
Yeah, I noticed that as well-very short-lived! Which is especially interesting considering how long the nearby Strathmore Paper Mills were up for.
Have a great Christmas!
Thank you, you as well! Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too J.
Happy Holidays, dude! 🎄
This was a cool ❄️ exploration! Happy holidays!
Thanks dude! Happy holidays to you as well! ⛄️
Worked there from startup to shutdown was one of the last out the door. Just before Christmas of 96' i had to call each employee and inform them they were done. Indeck chose coal because gas was unavailable and the plant was within the 100 year flood plane in the event of a flood to keep coal out of the river. The coal silo is super solid. and would cost a fortune to remove it held 30 days of coal when full. It was 23 MW Westinghouse steam turbine with a 100lb controlled extraction for steam to the mill . It had a 1000lb Zurn spreader stoker boiler with a sweet water condenser to control superheater steam temperature. In the control room was Westinghouse wdpf computer dcs which used automatic controls to run the plant . It burned 3ton of coal an hr at full load.Coal was trucked up from the rail yard in W.Springfield.There was a spray dry absorber and bag house to treat the sulfur and catch the flyash. 3 guys per shift to run it. I heard the plant equipment was sold down to El Salvador and is burning crushed coconut shells and shredded tires. - boilersinfo.com › stoker-fired-boiler-types-of-stokers - www.environmental-expert.com/products/wdpf-distributed-control-systems-85215 - indeckenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/turners_falls-300x212.jpg * A sweet water condenser condenses saturated steam out of the boiler, while heating boiler feedwater, to create condensate, which is then metered into the superheated steam outlet of the boiler through a control valve. - Spray drying - www.powderprocess.net/Spray_Drying/Introduction_Spray_Drying.html
Interesting, thank you so much for the details and history! I was curious why they chose to use coal over other fuel sources. That must have been very sad, having to inform each employee that it was their last year at work. Thank you so much for sharing!
@@lmc6516 I was trying to figure out how they got the coal there. I didn’t see any railroad tracks. I was wondering how they got the coal up into the silo?
@@jerrys9226 There was a coal unloading system that had a truck drop with belt and bucket conveyors. They lifted the coal to the top of the silo . It was preferred to take the coal off the truck drop and unload to smaller "daybin" that was directly in front of the boiler to reduce fuel handling. It ran on semibituminous coal which is relatively soft. Too much handling made the coal break up into "fines'' this made the boiler hard to control. . A higher percentage of the fuel burned in suspension than the boiler's design causing the fires to surge. We tried not to let the silo run lower than 3/4 full as the long drop broke up the coal. Wet coal with lots of "fines''"aka dust made things difficult all around with "freeze ups" and coal muck.Coal dust in general is a health hazard and an explosion risk. Screw conveyors took the coal from the bottom of the silo and fed it to the daybin via the bucket conveyors. Diverter plates in the bucket conveyor system were used to configure the desired unloading location. - boilersinfo.com › stoker-fired-boiler-types-of-stokers - indeckenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/turners_falls-300x212.jpg
@@lmc6516 wow! Thank you for that detailed information. I’m sure J-Mass will be interested in reading this. It’s a shame that after all the effort to construct that power plant it only lasted 7 years. Again, thank you and Merry Christmas!
Agreed, I truly appreciate the further details and information! It sheds a new light on this site for me. Such an interesting piece of local history, and I’m glad you were able to fill me in on more of the behind-the-scenes information and day-to-day operations!
You as handsome as always J .
Hey you were in my neighborhood😎🤙
Haha nice! I love Turners Falls!
A very cool video as always!! I think Turners fall is a very interesting location to explore. I never knew about this site, and I'm glad you were able to explore and capture it before it gets repurposed. That coal silo is amazing, I'm glad they are going to leave that standing in the future. And I know the cold you're talking about - it's been bone chilling around here the last few days. Have a happy, safe and Merry Christmas J-Mass,as well as all of your fans and supporters!! Cheers!
Thank you so much, I truly appreciated your support throughout 2024! Turners Falls is such a cool little historic village-there is so much to see here! I’m excited to cover it more in-depth whenever I get around to my Montague town review! And same here, I’m excited to see what artwork that coal silo will display!
Worked there when the plant was preparing to start up. I setup and tested the steam turbine that powered the feed water pump for the boiler. Drove by there years later and saw that it was gone.Good to hear the reason it was abandoned
Whoa, that’s fascinating! Thank you so much for sharing this insight!
Are you saying we are all getting coal in our Xmas stocking? Lol. Cold. Coal might be a good thing. Have a dope holiday.
Haha, I could use some coal after venturing out in 10 degree weather! I needed a bit to warm up after! 😂 Happy holidays man!
All that damage in the last five years? Disgusting
Agreed-it’s absolutely depressing to see how bad the damage is.
I remember there’s a quarry in southwick on the Agawam town line, probably hasn’t been active in at least 25 years
Oh really? Fascinating, I’m not familiar with that spot! I’ll definitely have to look into it!
Loved this video!!! It blows my mind that tower was built by the patients… what craftsmanship! Beautiful! The history was sad… kind of like they built their way out… thank you so much for sharing such an important piece of history. ❤
Thank you so much! 🙏 It really is a fascinating piece of history. The cemetery especially is quite sad and somber, but very thought-provoking to wander around and read all of the graves.
@@j-mass I’ll have to make a trip there and check it out! Old cemeteries are my favorite!
did you find any coal when you were there? lol
Lol I did not 😂 would have been in theme for Christmas, finding coal!
