Cedar Hills Homestead
США
Добавлен 11 июл 2023
A Montana homestead up in the Salish Mountains. We raise American Chinchilla rabbits, Nigerian Dwarf goats, Golden Comet hens, and Guinea fowl. We also hunt, fish, forage, and raise a pitiful little garden that is regularly wiped out by mid summer frosts.
We’re a family of four, and we live on the north side of an unnamed mountain. Our homestead borders the beautiful Kootenai National Forest.

Everything We Built On Our Montana Homestead | Our Story
I'm blown away by how many wonderful people are watching our videos and interested in what we're up to. I made this video to introduce ourselves, share where we're from, why we did things the way we did, and what we've been up to during our first four years of homesteading in Montana. This talks about what we did right, what we did wrong, and lessons learned.

Thanks for sharing your story. I know first hand it doesn't make it "worth it" but I find people who have faced some adversity or come from less than ideal family situations are generally just a lot more interesting and adaptable so hopefully that's some silver lining. I don't know you but I'm rooting for you and I hope you're proud of all you accomplished so far
Thank you, and well said! Most people don’t understand until they’ve been through it so I’m sorry you’ve had hard times too. Devin and I like to joke that we don’t wanna be around people who don’t know what real adversity is 🤣 too boring otherwise. Thank you so very much. 🥹♥️
Could you please post your recipes?
Not going to lie, i enjoyed having a talk by Devin (hi mate), especially for a subject like this. I like how Devin speaks, and how he explains things. I’m actually very up to it having Devin much more often into the videos. But obviously it’s not my call and let’s face it, we men just want to get things done etc. instead of talking to a camera. 😅 Also the minimal editing and jump cuts etc. was quite enjoyable. And i can’t even purchase any of these. Located in EU. 😅 But an over under is still good for local animal hunting, especially since we don’t have bears here, at max maybe see a fox.
It’s looking beautiful, yntil you get out of the house and shut the door behind you, and all of a sudden a ton of snow crushes you. 😬 I’m….lucky… i guess, for not having that cold of winters or at least no snow? 🤷♂️ Now that i thought of it, i am not sure i am actually. 🤔🤷♂️
Two or three winters ago we had snow slide off the roof and smash (kill) a chicken. It’s very pretty but after that we’ve been very careful haha. I love looking at the icicles though. L
You might need to invest in a roof rake for snow removal. @@CedarHillsHomestead
I'm trying to build homestead in California. Still havent found my property, but I know the two counties I want to live in .Thank you for all your help Sarah. You are one of the few people I am so grateful for finding this year..
We visited California many times in the semi and I just loved the beautiful countryside. I hope you find the perfect place and it treats you well. Thank you so much for your kind words 🥹♥️
I love winter
The amount of information in this video is incredible. The whole breakdown is greatly appreciated. I was looking for this for awhile
It’s always a white Christmas till the snow takes out your power lines
Wow, this was a great video. Thank you so much!
I’m guessing this is a Democrat that just wants to automatically dunk on Joel because he is working for Trump. Are you aware many people in Joel’s position charge a small fortune for the privilege of learning about these techniques? You are basically asking him to pay people to learn, who does that? His teachings are about regenerative agriculture, not about self sufficiency. The idea is to improve the top soil, he is not a prepper. Of course he can’t manage 6000 meat birds on his own, nor can he consume them, if this is a commercial operation you need workers, or a large family.
Big difference between a university lecture or a workshop where you’ve got someone who is standing in front of you sharing as much information as effectively as they can (teacher/professor should be paid) versus on-the-job training which benefits the teacher via the labor (which equals money) and the student via pay + knowledge.
Seriously IMPRESSIVE video. It is all the info I wanted but just simply could not find. On the net all ration ideas were linked to pellets or seemed reluctant to feed grains. So incredible, thank you so much for doing this.
I've been wanting to ask can apply this to raising meat ducks? I like muscovy ❤
Superbowl food for jocks for life on the cheap....what will become of the rest of the chickens besides the damned wings? Really, you are just gonna buy the smallest portion of meat on the bird, but you are gonna buy it 10 pounds at a time?
Omg I was waiting for this to explode with baited breath 😂 looks good
It looks amazing!!!
"I fried 8 pounds of meat one evening" and...???
Just a side note, slective breeding in fact makes the cornish cross a genetically modified organism. Selective breeding is a genetic modification, which is what GMO means.
I wonder what part of IN you came from? We're in Terre Haute area.
I have such a hard time believing some ones mom could be so hateful. I'm so sorry. You made the right choice at cutting all time with her. I also live in Montana in a Tumblewees tiny house on wheels renting on a cattle farm. Thank you for sharing your video.❤
Like your kids eating a lot of fresh berries. I bolted 4 window wells together into a clover leaf shape. Filled it with a good layer of wood at bottom and over filled it with soil after i winter soil will fill all gaps and settle and i planter one strawberry plant and within 2 years it had spread and took over the whole raised garden bed. I now have 6 raised beds. Blueberries, 2 strawberries, 2 rasberry, golden berries, and one just as a dirt pile for kids to play in it is perfect for playtime
Thank you! We are researching meat rabbits.
REMEMBER ONLY OPEN POLLINATED SEEDS WILL GROW PROPERLY THE NEXT YEAR, IF YOU ARE A SEED SAVER. BAKER HEIRLOOM SEEDS AND STRICTLY MEDICINAL SEEDS ARE GOOD SEED SOURCES FOR OPEN POLLINATED PLANTS (NOT HYBRIDS). MOST OPEN POLLINATED ARE HEIRLOOM SEEDS.
Sarah, I thank you for posting the single most informative video I have ever watched on YT. Why the YT algorithm fed this to me, I don't know but I am grateful. I will likely not be putting this rich mine of information into action anytime soon but I am now armed with at least a college semester's course of information. One again, thank you 😊
Free Range Chickens wont need any feed. Just expect to lose some to hawks lol.
I've never bothered to comment on any video, ever, but I want to comment here. If I hadn't already subscribed to your channel long ago then I would have after having watched this video. It may sound silly, and irrelevant, but I'm proud of you - both of you. Live, love, and be safe.
You're amazing and an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your story and experiences. After having everything stolen from me, I'm encouraged to keep pressing forward.
You’re not alone and even though I don’t know you I am sure you will someday think everything worked out perfectly. Wishing you the very best!! ♥️✨
Montana is beautiful. But winter is about 8 months
Yes it is! We ended up getting at least one light snow every month this year.
A ton of incredibly useful information, raising chickens is not a joke and something to be taken more serious after watching this video. Thank you for posting
How did you start your freelance writing journey? Been following since your first video! Love it all! 💚
I started a terrible blog, I wrote around 30 posts for it, and then started pitching to write for brands and other blogs. I also learned how to make basic websites and got VERY good at search engine optimization. I also used Upwork and asked for references whenever possible. It was a slow grind and definitely wouldn’t have been possible without my husband being the breadwinner. Every year I made a little more money until about 2023- then I started going back down. AI has been difficult to compete with (it’s free and instant). I really like ProBlogger, LinkedIn, and WriterAccess for finding new work. It’s not as easy now as it was in 2020-2022 to find work, but it is possible. I haven’t given up on writing but I am looking at what I can do to pivot. This fall I have been looking into finishing my biology degree online. I’m not sure what’s next but I have genuinely loved writing. It’s not exactly stable but if it’s a true passion of yours I say give it your best. ♥️
As I understood from using one exactly like yours, the soaking is supposed to give a steaming effect rather than preventing cracking. For that u put the pot in the oven when it’s not already hot as u said in the video. Btw ur videos are so pragmatic I love them
You’re right, thank you for that clarification! And thank you in general 😁😁😁
For my metric system friends I did the math and for an 85 square meters house in zone 4 (of the map from the video) you need 4 tonnes of firewood, or 9 stero meters
Thank you so much for this!!! I would love to start incorporating metric numbers but it gets confusing with that many numbers. I really appreciate the help!!
Not finished watching yet but im glad you are sharing your story as much as you can ❤ so glad your able to live the way you want now
Thank you so much ♥️♥️♥️
Hey Lady! I remember finding your channel and finding a sense of hope that my transplant self could make it in Montana with homesteading. I am so grateful to have heard your story today and it sheds a lot of light of how transformative this beautiful state is. I know it must have been difficult to share, especially to the internet and to so many but it's an inspiration. Still working on our channel, we are currently met with some struggles all our own as well here near Missoula. Looks like we might be moving soon, so dreams of homesteading will wait but I am still inspired and determined to stay here as long as I can. Hope you are well and happy holidays + happy new year!
I adored Missoula. Don’t worry about having to take detours, I had to leave Montana twice before I could finally be here permanently. Everything really worked out for the best for us and I hope the same happens for you. This state really is eye opening and healing. I cannot wait to watch your homesteading journey happen, I know it will be great. Thank you so much for being here both in this great state and here to be supportive of our journey 🥹🥹♥️♥️♥️
@@CedarHillsHomestead Thank you for your support also! It's so great to have a community on YT even in proximity. YES! You will be one of the first to know about it all! :D
I love your steadfastness and perseverance. Also your realness and your matter of fact ness about data. Also you are a great speaker, very calming voice. Looking forward to following your journey!
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me! 🥰
Your doing awesome! I really love your content. I just want to say your uncle was right. I had to cut my dad out for my own sanity and he died 2 years later. I found out thru facebook, no one bothered to tell me he was even sick. It still hurts that i could have talked to him, i tell everyone who has had to cut out a parent to rethink how it would feel if they passed while you didnt speak. Because i know it hurt me. Anyway, I hope you have a video about your grow out tractor. Ive got to make one in the next few weeks for some kits.
I am so sorry for your loss, that’s awful that no one told you. I hope you find peace and forgive yourself. I filmed a video on the rabbit tractor but never uploaded it, I overthought it and didn’t do anything with it haha. I might just upload that later this month. Thank you so much. 😊
Thank you for sharing your story. Love watching your content
I've got a cabinet full of gear intended for producing video for my youtube channel - but I can't find the combination of time and energy to take away from the work of the homestead to make videos about the work on the homestead ;)
I’ve said many times over that the very best homesteaders don’t have RUclips channels because they don’t have the time for it. 😁♥️ the land is far more important than the videos
I raised rabbits in various cages and tractors for a few years - My suggestion is to start raising them in a colony. It's so much better...
Thank you, I've heard good things about colony set ups, but haven’t tried it so far. I really love seeing them in their big rabbit tractor eating and playing. My only concern with the colony is making sure they aren’t stressed with each other (ear biting or eating kits) and making sure that they aren’t breeding too often. Any advice for that?
@@CedarHillsHomestead Mommies and young babies only in the main colony. Take the kits out once they're big enough to go into the tractors. Same sex only tractors. Tractor the babies until they're big enough to eat. Mom's are taken out to go see your buck when you decide they should be bred again. Downside: They will eat all the grass in the colony pen quickly, so this isn't a solution for feeding them. My colony pen is open air which risks predation, but I live in a low predator area. That's just my opinion. I thought my bunnies were happy before in their large (8ft by 4ft) cages but I had no idea how much happier they are when they can touch dirt.
I'm not sure a colony is better. After seeing how territorial the does are, how will you step in, in case of injury? You'll have to dismantle everything they've built, and how can you even tell? And even if you have a peaceful breeders, how are you going to separate the grow-outs? You won't be able to handle the young kids, I and don't imagine they'll become less skittish with age. And if you don't separate in time, how will you tell apart the breeders from the offspring? And if one becomes sick, you could lose them all. (Based on what other growers are sharing, I haven't grown any).
@@doinacampean9132 Honestly you just let the does fight. The fights don't last long and they come to a truce soon after. I used to step in to stop fights too, but it's better if they work out their problems on their own. Also fights are much less common in a large space and my colony is 25ft by 25ft.
I am living in a two bedroom no yard apartment in california dreaming of next year when we move to Arkansas. You will never know how much I needed to hear my learning and planning isn't just time wasting dreaming. I need dirt under my kids feet.
Oh you will love Arkansas, make sure you follow The Farmhand’s Companion w Pa Mac here on YT, he’s in Arkansas and is so helpful. I’m excited for you to start your journey! Arkansas you will be so grateful for all the research that California you did! ♥️
Just please don't bring California mind-set with you. We moved to Arkansas 46 years ago. It is a beautiful state. The natives are friendly but they don't NEED you for a friend. They have all the help, socializing and drama from family they can handle. But you will have plenty of friends from newcomers. ( and by-the-way we are still considered one of those). When we moved to our acreage we had one neighbor on our road 9/10ths of a mile away. Now we have one right next to us from California, next to them from Texas. The other direction, Indiana, Alabama, Colorado. They have all had the light company put in very bright night lights. They have motion sensor lights. Stargazing has gone out the window. It is definitely different. And we are in our 80's, too old to move! 😢
We live in northern ontario canada and can relate with the hard work of a northern climate homestead but wouldnt change it for the world! Thank you for all your hard work on your videos it helpes us to know what we needed to not be so dependent on the feed store
Thank you that means a lot! There really aren’t many northern farm/ranch/homestead channels, we’re definitely more drawn to finding each other aren’t we 😁♥️
All the good times in a family are made during hard times. Touching video. 🥲
Thank you 🥹♥️
And you made my day with your tropical birds looking at you perched on the snowy, snowy pines :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
What I would give to be able to go back and get a picture of it. I just knew I was hallucinating back then and didn’t even bother. 🤣
60 pounds of mushrooms? Wow, that's not nothing... Anyway, how about some gardening videos next year?
Thank you for the recommendation! I still don't feel like I know what I'm doing but I have a lot of examples and mistakes I can share for others to avoid. And a few of those mushrooms were almost a half pound each which really helped us out! We had a very long and wet fall so the conditions just turned out perfect for them.
@@CedarHillsHomestead - oh, I think sharing the mistakes is more valuable, especially for people like me, who are constantly trying new methods of growing plants.
0:57 - when you say guineas, you mean fowl, pigs or hogs?
Oh that’s a good question! I meant Guinea fowl! We now have Guinea fowl and Guinea pigs, and thanks to The Farmhand’s Companion (here on YT) I now want American Guinea Hogs ♥️
I've been watching since your very first video, without commenting, but I just wanted to add to the chorus that you are so not alone when it comes to fraught family situations. My mother did similar, and like you I was lucky to have a safe place to turn- albeit with neighbors and my godparents who had already noticed that not all was well and I needed other homes. I think there's something in the spirit which gets cultivated by the needs that go unmet when we have those kinds of mothers- we need to know how to care for ourselves and our loved ones so we never fall into the same traps, however accidental. People who are healthy and whole despite their family of origin will never treat our children the way we were treated- but the world might, and I think we have a drive to fill in as many of those gaps as we can. You might resonate with the idea of being a cycle breaker. There's a book on that topic by Mariel Buque- though it's spiritual in ways I can find challenging, it's helped me with vocabulary and understanding of what it is I went through, and what it is I want to do differently with my own family. All the best to you- the way you move through the world speaks for itself.
Thank you so very much! Your perception AND recommendation is spot on! I read her book after finding her podcast and she is so eye-opening and genuinely helpful. Thank goodness for those everyday angels who get us out of tight situations. Thank you for taking the time to write to me and I wish you the best too, thank you 🥹🥹❤️❤️
Thank you so much for sharing ❤️. I loved your channel for the information you provided and now I love it even more for the beautiful family behind it. From one momma to another, you go girl! You’re one strong woman.
Thank you so much that means a lot! 🥹❤️❤️
Thank you very much
I had something similar happen with my family. Mom had a midlife crisis, sold the house while I was in my first couple months of college and then left my dad citing emotional abuse in order for the courts to let her take everything of value. She kept promising my dad if he did what she said they would get back together so he didn't even have a lawyer at first. All my college money was drained and when I asked about it she said she didn't know where it went, later did admit to taking it. I had to drop out. Mom left me to live with my dad who stopped eating and lost so much weight I didn't recognize him. Dad ended up getting a gf and didn't want me around anymore because they wanted to have sex all the time and my presence ruined that. Married my military bf who was stationed in japan and went. Everyone thought I was crazy but I had no one. Both parents were reliving their party days again and we were never close to extended family. To me it was the same as a death. One day I had family and stability and the next I had no one. Tried to donate blood a few days later after finding out abt the divorce and was denied because of my blood pressure not being right so I started crying. The lady took me outside and asked what was going on and I told her and she just laughed and said she was currently divorcing and her 10 and 8 year olds were doing fine. Like something was wrong with me for being upset. It's insane how in american society as soon as you turn 18 you can just be kicked to the curb and that's it. They force you to be in public school until 18 and no beginner jobs will cover rent at least where I'm from.
I completely understand what you mean by it feels like death, that's such a good way of putting it. You really do have to mourn people who are still around, which is is difficult and confusing- and a lot of people just don't get what that's like. Really a lot of people just don't have the empathy until it happens to them. I'm glad you landed on your feet and I hope you're feeling much safer and happier now. 🫶🏻🫶🏻
That was a journey. I got to admit that when you said you liked using the maul I was like "I" don't want to touch a maul if I don't have to. LOL I wimped out and wanted a splitter. I hope you guys have all the time you want on your homestead. And thank you for the high quality information you put out. No one else even attempts the level of detail or quality you hit with your feed and raising animals videos. I am still getting use out of the rabbit and chicken videos. Just ban the haters or make fun of them. Dealers choice.
Your last two sentences made me bust out laughing 😂 Also thank you because sometimes I wonder if I'm just doing too much so I appreciate that 😁🫶🏻
@@CedarHillsHomestead I am glad it made you laugh. Refusing to take a hater seriously can be as wounding as anything you can say. You two do very good work here.
You guys made the best out of a not so great start. You should be proud of yourself.
Thank you 🫶🏻
