We burn through 3-4 cords of mixed hard and soft wood per winter. We live in Sierra County, CA, at 3800' where it rarely dips into single digits at night. So far this year the days have been staying warm (high 50s), so we don't get the fire going until 4pm. I really appreciate the math breakdown, and your sources for the numbers!
For my metric system friends I did the math and for an 85 square meters house in zone 4 (of the map from the video) you need 4 tonnes of firewood, or 9 stero meters
Thank you so much for this!!! I would love to start incorporating metric numbers but it gets confusing with that many numbers. I really appreciate the help!!
I am a total math nerd so loves the video, thank you. Do you think it is feasible to calculate how much land you need of you want to cut your own fence posts? Thank you so much! (Quick edit, I feel like that was a little confusing. I am wondering how much wood is needed for fence posts. I am talking about exterior fence posts, so I suppose it depends where you are if you need 4X4 or 6X6 posts. I figure if you have one every eight feet you'd need about 100 to enclose one acre, 200 for a four acre area (the math works), etc. Not sure the rate at which you'd be replacing them, and also how deep they need to be. For you I am guessing 4 feet? And how high do you recommend for an exterior fence?
Somehow, here in EU, asking around to help on work while being rewarded in some way from the work we actually put in, or bartering, is not something you can easily do as people easily frown upon. Especially in towns. And i never understood why. It’s much more acceptable in villages, especially over on the mountains. And yes, i blame it on governments for that. 🤣
I absolutely love these guides. The rabbit one, my entire family has watched. Settling down to watch this one. Thank you for all you do!
Same!
Wow! That is a great amount of good information! Thank you for taking the time to calculate everything.
Enjoyed the wild life scenes while I listened. Will have to re listen and make notes so I can calculate my house usage. Thanks
Lots of valuable information . Good job . Thank you
These videos are killer. Great work.
Awesome so you need about 12 cords as a backup. Great video.

Thank you so much, I love your content. And all your information.
Love this info! Thank you so much!
WOW!!! I just asked my neighbor who has a larger house than mine. And matched it with some left over. Guess I'm lazy.
