Jig Tying Basics, Locking on the Thread
Nice jig. I do something close to that. You said you use a water based enamel for your heads. If I may, what brand do you use to airbrush with or are you just brushing it on? Thank you and have a Happy Holiday. Ole
I use mainly Createx water based enamels. For the best durability when spraying (or nose dipping) the jigs I follow their steps for hard surface application and finish with KBS Diamond Finish clear.
Can u fish the single colored jigs without putting a bait on them for a tip? I live on guntersville lake and we use a jig similar but it's a ball head with just one color and ive just got my vice etc and wonder if I need to tie it with just one strand or make the v with the same color hair?
You can fish these with / without bait. I tie many single color calf tails and should turn the cameras on next time Im at the vise.
Merry Christmas hope to see many of your videos in the upcoming year
Merry Christmas and hopefully a great New Year!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours!!
Nice looking jig. I don’t think it will be very durable
@@Steve-rr3gc why would you think that? This will catch fish all day
@ from past experience turkey, pheasant or other feather tails aren’t durable. I like the jig, stream line design. Just need multiple. Synthetics are usually more durable.
Time moves on Jay, lol I’m still tying with materials from Universal Vise Corp. only because I bought way back when, mostly chenilles, not because I was thinking of the future but the colors I used, white, pink, red and chartreuse were cheap back then so I loaded up(thankfully)and still using them today. Thanks for the entertainment. Always inspiring.
TMI that's funny, keep entertaining us, i enjoy your commemorating.
Happy Holidays! 🎄 to you and your family Jay.Work is getting in the way of my fishing. My favorite time in my home dtate of Maryland is just around the corner.Late winter yellow perch and trout fishing.Come March white perch and shad fishing.I really enjoy tying jigs on cold winter days.Stay safe and tight lines.Always enjoy the master at work.
Love seeing you tying smaller ice fishing jigs! Love to see more!
I’d like to know if there a difference between the salt and borax with how oily they are after you let them sit a month. Is it more so the borax that you have to let sit an extra week or salt?
@MainlyFliesDIY the results are equal, I don't find one to be much better than the other. Salt overall was much cheaper but the borax could be used longer. I get 3-4 seasons using the same salt. Since the video I'm using a 60/40 mix salt / borax which is working well.
Awesome thank you for replying so quickly still finishing up the video. I was doing research and stumbled across yours I’d like to start doing my own tails and thought about processing my own deer pelt as well any tips for the pelt or do you mostly do the tails.
Also I thought this was a great video and will age well. I know a lot of people who do videos look back and think oh that looks stupid but this is super informative and I appreciate it a lot. Please keep this up even if you ever doubt the video it’s hard to find information on stuff like this anymore. Especially with all the points you hit and little tips throughout the video.
Great jig, I’m wondering could you substitute pheasant tail for the turkey?
Pheasant would work good!
You ever glue fancy eyes 👀 on the jigs?
I have, but I dont think ever for a video. I do sell aspirin heads that get the stick on eyes. I might have to pull that mold out...
Just placed an order Jay. Can’t wait to get out on the ice, got about 4-5 inches up here already. Thanks for the videos
Jay that’s awesome like that one a lot.
Jay please exscuse my ignorance when I ask you this. I dont ice fish for good reasons...we dont have ice bit I have always wondered why ice fisherman use extrmely small jigs. When you guys ice fish will they not hit lets say like a 1/16 or even a 1/8 ounce. I use micro hand tied jigs that I make myself for realky oressured crappie or lets say when a severe front comes through and the fish are finicky. I always see you and other ice fisherman tie these really small patterns and wonder why you guys use smaller jigs or should I say smaller profiles. My common sense tells me that in really cold water fish are really lethargic and do not want a big bait or their metabolism is slow due to the colder temps and they prefere small insect profiles. Can you explain why ice fisherman use micro jigs. I have always wondered. Thanks for listening and again please exscuse my ignorance when it comes to ice fishing topics.
Alex your common sense is spot on and probably the main reason to scale down the jigs we use. I'll say up-front, I am in no way an expert and my opinions are speculation at best. The areas I fish we are mainly targeting perch & bluegill, walleye & pike. Once lakes are frozen over the vegetation dies off. We are often fishing over soft bottoms. At this stage the two main things to eat are either smaller fish or little bugs & worms. This turkey tail jig maybe has a profile of a small fish, maybe its the tail looking like little worms(??) The local reservoir a popular jig is tinny black thing like a fly or ant. This lake all year is thick with aldure flies so I suspect fish key in on the larva in the winter and the adult fly during the summer. For the larger fish blades and lures that are tipped with or look like a minnow is mostly what I use.
What kind of jig vice is that? Never seen one like that.
Its an old Universal Vise, Universal 2
Love to see more of your favorite ice fishing jigs!
You'll be happy with the video scheduled for 12/14/24
Thanks! Micro jigs are my personal favorites.
Really nice pattern Jay. Really like this one. Although we don't have hard water in Alabama this pattern would probably worl really well on bluegill. I will have to tie a few of these up. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely, size this up 1/16, 1/8 perfect for bluegill.
I got
Copper crystal flash would go well on that jig. Awesome tie.
Awesome jig. Would love to see how you paint that head.
Thanks Eric. The paint job is nothing fancy, first paint the jig with two coats of epoxy white. Once dry, we would dip the nose in a slightly thinned black epoxy (sometimes black enamel). Take care while they hang to dry and touch any nose drips with a craft stick.
Would really like to see more perch jig videos. Do you make any in 1/64 oz? Thanks Jay! Enjoy your videos.
@@joehawk9839 I'll be sure to tie some of the smaller 1/60 1/90 jigs in upcoming videos
@JayIsOutdoorsy Thanks. I make quite a bit of micro jigs. Mainly use hackle with crystal flash. Use ball head jigs. I have been busy with work, so when things slow down and the weather gets cold it will be time to start making jigs. I live in Maryland and enjoy the spring run for white and yellow perch. Thanks again. Your a true professional at your craft.
By the way Jay....it looks like an oreo cookie!
You up late tonight Jay. Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely love tying and learned a lot from you. Watching this video about the Universal ll really intrigued me how very simple they are. Got really curious, found one on Ebay and bought it $50!!! And by the way I absolutely like it. Thx for the videos.
Bryon Im glad you enjoy the videos. Great score on the Universal 2!
Love using Walleye flys! On my list to tie a bunch over the winter!
Jay, my first post didn't take so here goes again. Since I have been a subscriber I have noticed that when you are wrapping your hook shanks on your patterns, you pull out 4-6 inches of line and after your wrap is complete you cut off that line and discard. I know why you do this when you utilize the different color line to make your whip finish but on a fly like this where you actually use the whip finishing tool you still discard that 4-6 inches of line. I know you have boxes and years worth of thread but becauae I am so frugal and with the way every thing is getting so expensive I don't have that tag line to cut. It basically ends up under my thread wraps. I know you are frugal like me and was just wondering why you have that much thread waste when using a whip finishing tool. I understand why you do it when you use the looped line method when finishing your knots on your jigs. I always try and figure out ways to make my materials last as long as they can because I am cheap! Anyway, love this pattern....I guess you could scale this pattern down and use it for trout as well. I like the profile of this pattern. Cold down here in Alabama. We had our first good frost Thursday morning. Leaves are starting to get color on them as well. My favorite time of the year!
@alexrawleigh3167 you are correct, I do waste a bit of thread here and when I lock on thread as well. When finishing with a separate loop of thread the Xtra is so I can keep taught and controle the tag end as I pull it through. I'm going to have to admit here a bad habit...
Jay I had no intention to dissing you sir. You are a prodigy when it comes to fly tying. You are always telling us to keep material waste depending on what it is so we can use it on other patterns. I keep several coffee cans that use for waste such as marabou and saddle hackel. I have found myself tying really nice patterns on material waste which in turn has saved me a ton of money. Saddle hackle and marabou depending on what brands you buy can be very expensive. When you taught me that a lot of material waste can be used....I started saving a lot of money and that's because of you! Like I said I understand why you have the long tag line when you are using the looped line to finish your whip finishing knot. I apologize if I upset you. It wasn't intentional. My crappie does here have finally turned on. Filling the freezer is not a problem right now.
No offense taken. I often re-watch videos to pick apart anything I could do better, say better, record better. Recently I have talked a bit about thread, I often say I use what I use because it is cheap. We will have to see if I change anything in the future
A+ Music choice . Thank you for the none elevator music version .
Regal vice with the monster jaw. Has held up for thousands of jigs. Think it's about 9yr old. Still like new no parts needed and it's very fast with notches for heavier hooks. You won't ever get another vice. Well nice work!
Love this vice. I purchased the universal 2 from your website for a spare , along with some jigs. I wanted to buy some unpainted Barumba jig heads but I didn’t see an option for that. If you sell them, I would love to add some to the order, if not too late. I couldn’t find any contact info on your website.
@@woodmasterran9528 shipped first thing this morning. ETA Tuesday
Got the vise today, thanks! Do you sell the unpainted Barumba jig heads? If so, how can I purchase some? If you don’t, I understand. Thanks again.
Great video. Tons of great information on the U2. I have two of these vises and I don't think McMaster Carr has those shim washer that you use. They do have the shim washers for the fly wheel side. I been searching for sometime now.
Jay.....wish you were my neighbor. You could come over and use my bead blaster. I have different grits but it would make short work of that rust. I would love to get your bench vise in the blaster and get it cleaned up and repainted. That is a good table vise. Looks like an older version. A lot of these newer vises are made from pot medal and are junk. I have both of my father's bench vises which were fabricated back in the 30's and they are tanks. I restored both of them after dad passed away and they look brand new.
@@alexACR3167 I have an older vise, I think much better brand (# 203 1/2 Reed Manufacturing) you can see in other videos on my casting bench. Would love to refinish that one.

Always enjoy seeing new ice fishing jigs to tie
Glad I found your channel. This is what I want to try and tie. Great way you explain how to create this basic mini bucktail jig.
Awesome set up Jay I like it looks like a comfortable set up I like the way you set up the fishing line with the fishing rod guides thanks for sharing your table set up.
This made me happy! My morning coffee and Jay. Thanks for sharing.
Jay....those isn't your work space.....it is a museum! Lots of history sitting right there. Especially like your dad's bench.....if it could only talk.....thanks for sharing. I only have 3 vises. Of course I haven't been in the fly/jig tying world as long as you and your family have been.
Just another note, I love to see closer look at your dad's Universal prototype tying vise.!
Jay, great video!! I also enjoy seeing other tiers bench set ups. Many of my mentors have been tying for 40-50 yrs. Each one of them has a slightly different set up depending on the style of fly they like to tye or specialize in. It is really interesting to the evolution of a tiers bench over time. My bench has gone through several major changes since I started tying. Even my tools have changed. Most of time there is always something I pick up and try to incorporate into my bench to help with the flow.
Very interested in some ice fishing jigs to start tying for the ice fishing season soon to start
Can I ask you what type of visa are you using
It is my trusty old Universal 2 by Universal Vise Corp.
Love seeing the picture of your Dad in front of that 41foot trailer that was your parent's first home.
HAHAHA I was going through some old slides and have a few from this day with Mom & you holding some nice trout. An old intro is Mom & Uncle Dean each with a trout. I will look into updating the intro each January with something from these old photos.
@@JayIsOutdoorsy I cannot tell you where we caught those fish........too young to remember. If Uncle Dean was in a picture, it was 1962....I did not fish on that trip. They could have been fishing in the Pacific, or one of the waterways around Eugene, OR.
Thanks for more ice fishing jig ideas!!
Jay very interesting video with regards to threads and usage--I'll try to be brief however your referencing thread usage leans more towards your production needs and the molds that you use. For us newbies weekend warrior old school guys that have numerous molds and material our usage tends to be broader and more detailed. Consequently the comparisons intersect somewhat but all tips techniques shortcuts are very appreciated that' why we watch however everyone has their own approach and have so many different lures. Apologize for the verbage THANK YOU again and also Thank You for the opportunity to purchas the UNIVERSAL 2 very cool vise, also notice the PEAK LIRS 3 MIA. TAKE CARE BE SAFE BE GRATEFUL BE HEALTHY.
Loved this video with the ice fishing theme! Love to see more ice fishing jigs if possible winter is not to far away
Ooh I like that pattern! Nice! I'm going to try that on my pike jigs.
Thanks Jay always enjoy watching and you are very informative with this thread video 👍
