Backyard Railroad: Uncle Kurt Rides!
Просмотров 5475 месяцев назад
Uncle Kurt has been a big fan of the MN E&E Railroad, and today he rides for the first time! Being that Uncle Kurt is in the beginning stages of ALS, I wanted to be sure he was securely on the train when riding. So we fabricated a simple chair that's interchangeable with the caboose car. It's really nice because the center of gravity is just about as low as we can get it! Anyway, the chair work...

Hi all, We got our mini pondless waterfall up and running! Even though it's only a little bit, it's nice to officially have water running under our bridge! We tried using only 1 25W solar water pump kit but ended up getting another one. With the second kit, we got a battery to go along with it. I'd recommend get the battery so you can have running water into the night. The kits were something l...
Backyard Railroad: Winter Train Running

Hi all. Long time! This video is mostly showing our process for running our 7.5" gauge backyard train in the winter. The distance from our garage to the our small layout loop is still a bit of a process, but it's worth it! That being said, is it sustainable? Probably not! So we have ideas for expansion for the future. But we are not going to get into that right now. Many decisions to be made! H...

The lean you are talking about is known as superelevation. Great video.
I added small pieces of electrical tape where lighting unit butts up against the light diffuser, on top and bottom. This makes a huge improvement. I'm fussy as and I'm extremely happy with the result.
Sorry I’m just grabbing your latest video for this question but what is the diameter of those titan Bettendorf truck wheels you bought from Titan? And are they the same as the plum grove truck wheels on the loco you got from Plum cove? I’m working on building my own setup and there are multiple wheel diameters available for purchase and I’d like to keep them the same if possible but I can’t find any info online about their diameter. Thanks for any info!
@@joeydonuts84 Hi! Yeah, almost exactly 4” on the Titan Train Bettendorfs and just about the exact same on the Plum Cove motor/wheel assemblies. Unfortunately I can’t get a measuring device right in the Plum Coves, but I’ve never sensed a difference in sizes. In our case, though, you can’t see the Plum Coves when riding due to the Plum Cove frame that they are in. But I’d be willing to bet 4” wheel faces is what you’ll find just about anywhere. I’d get ahold of Brett at Plum Cove for details. I bet he’d answer. Also Jim and crew at Titan Trains would probably respond to you on exact measurements. Both companies have been quite nice and helpful. Good luck and feel free to chime in with more questions. We might be able to send you in the right direction, anyway. 👍👍
Thanks for the info and sorry for the late reply. I was curious because I plan to purchase the same trucks you did but couldn’t find info on their dimensions. I’m going to build my own drive axles for a loco and can purchase the wheels and axles separately with several size wheel options but wanted to know what the Bettendorf truck wheel sizes were to keep them similar. Info sure is hard to come by online and I knew you’d answer! So I appreciate the info and might keep coming to you in the future so don’t delete your page! And lastly I wanted to ask, why the slow down on videos recently? Been looking forward to your building updates as I’m a novice like you.
@ All sounds very cool! …Yeah, the slowdown probably has the most to do with money and time just like everything else 😂😂 We could make tons of videos of us riding, but we keep those videos to a minimum because viewers are looking more for our good projects and progress. But that takes time and money. We also don’t do many riding videos because there’s something to be said about riding and playing without the video element. Easier to be in the moment as a family. But I can tell you our plan is to build our turntable at the end of the depot/station. Anyway, all the best!
Need to make a temporary Bumper on that track so you can't derail there :) Been following the progress and very interesting. Keep up the good work.
@@In2-Tech Very true! But I keep telling myself I’m going to get going on the turntable that’s gonna go there so I skip the temp bumper 😂😂 Thanks for following! It’s been slow lately as far as progress in building. But it’ll be back soon!
what are the wheels measures? and heave bearing into that?
@@cristianornesribas8217 Will this video help? ruclips.net/video/wpG3SXfhPQ4/видео.htmlsi=VKCFZCQf8xEcA1WO As far as measurements, I don’t have the exact specs. You might try going directly to Titan Trains for their measurements. The trucks we got are Bettendorf: titantrains.net/bettendorf-trucks-pair/
What are the gears you used on the axles and motors?

Nice work! I soak my railroad ties and wood in motor oil. I soak my ties in motor oil😮not really but yea. Wosh i could find some creosote. Love that smell
@@jasonsmith6408 Yeah, I think we’re into some of those smells too 😂 Ya know it’s probably working when you get a smell like those 😂
Are you installing slight pitch to your turns? Real railro. ..wait this IS a real railroad! 😎at work my coworkers say you aren't working Saturday because you wanna play with your trains. ..I say one does NOT play with trains they operate and or run them.
@@jasonsmith6408 😂😂 Yup! We pretend we’re cool and run or operate our backyard train! 😂 And yeah, we put a touch of super elevation to our turns. But not much! With our tight turns, it was harder than I thought getting super elevation without messing things up. Anyway, whatever we did, it’s proven to be pretty darn good for our layout 👍👍
Could you make electro magnets that small?
I suppose so somehow 🤔
"oh yeah!" love it :)
Nice engineering young man.

@@BriggsCanyon Ha! Yes! And a bit of fire wood 😂
Nice video! Great surprise when we see the down tree. After we had the big storm up here I walked out at night with a flashlight to check the damage and I couldn't find my train shed! It was buried on all sides by fallen trees. Luckily, no damage was done to the train shed or track. We lost 11 trees that night.
@@garysteffens5468 Oh man!! Glad to hear nothing was damaged! But sorry about losing so many trees! Lots of work!
If a tree is gonna fall thats the best kind, no house, fence or track. Awesome. But still sucks.. he is growing up so fast and he is becoming a great engineer..
@@TriGogglin Yeah, feel super lucky about how the tree came down. I knew it wasn’t doing well, and now I can cut it up myself. So a little silver lining I guess 🤷♂️ And yeah, Elan’s getting better! I’m just so happy he’s into it!
lots of fun! too bad about the tree but glad it did not appear to damage the track
@@jsarkozy Yeah, got lucky having no damage to anything or anyone.

Watching your backyard railroad videos is truly an inspiration, special for us who are just in the dreaming/beginning stages of looking into our own 7 1/2" Ga railroad. Seeing how you've done it shows a path forward! in what can be a too expensive hobby. Thank you.
Absolutely love it❤!!! Uncle Kurt looks like he had fun!!😊
Great solution, and it looked good. I think uncle Kurt enjoyed it.. well done..
How did you get into this hobby?
I think we are wired a certain way about our love for trains and miniature railroads...best place to start is visit a local club and see what goes on there.
@@jsarkozy Thanks for the advice.
@@ZadunRoss We went off the deep end during the pandemic in 2020. My student loans were put on hold and instead of putting that money somewhere else, we put it towards trains and started making our backyard railroad piece by piece. We weren’t able to visit an existing railroad at that time, but RUclips, Facebook groups, and phone calls to companies like Titan Trains and Accu-tie really helped us find our way. But one of the reasons we started our channel was to help others find more info and ideas etc. But back to your main question, we liked trains but we really wanted to ride ON our train! So we looked into backyard railroading. 😊
I think what you do is cool, and expensive, but cool.
Hey, watching you from India. I love this type of coool stuffs. I will surely build it. Thanks innovative man
So why did you decide to build your own cab and not go with the complete kit from plum cove.
Because we wanted to customize.
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Thank you for your reply.
Why do you think the set screw failed, was it not going in all the way? and do you still like and have good results from the plum cove running gear? Thank you.
@@followinghim5194 Yeah, not totally sure, but I think the set screw was not set deep enough. But after setting it deeper in a new spot on the axel (because I couldn’t find the existing set hole), we have been back in business, no problem. Are we still happy with Plum Cove? Yeah! We have no reason to steer anyone away from them. 👍
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Thank you for your reply and time. your videos and content are Relly done well, they are very helpful for me who is only in the beginning dreaming stages of starting my own 7 1/2' Ga railroad. your videos show clearly how you built the track and your engine. they show a path to getting started in this hobby,
So, you didn't end up using Accu tie for your rails and ties??
@@followinghim5194 I had purchased the solid sticks of plastic and cut those to length, first. Then I bought Accurate-tie ties later and used both products. So every other tie on our layout is technically different. But if I had to do it again, I’d just go with 7 5/8 Accu-tie ties. Rail: I purchased Midwest Scale Rail namely because they were close enough for just a couple hour ride round trip. So I saved on shipping. But between the 2 styles of rail, I’m not sold that either one makes any real big difference, at least for our application.
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Thank you for your time and great explanation of your process.
Great video, good helpful explanation of the product and what to look for. I am new to this gauge and looking into my options for track laying and good products. thank you .
@@followinghim5194 After using a couple options for ties, I have to let people know that Accu-tie ties were the way to go for us. The cost is not bad in my opinion and the track gauge comes built in. As far as aluminum rail, we have 2 types and neither would make or break each other. We have lots of videos trying to share our learning along the way if you’re interested. Good luck!
Just ordered rail myself

How much track would you estimate in total for your entire setup?
@@mierimageaerials It’s about a 190’ loop plus 10’ in front of the station at the moment.
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471 Nice! I just measured my proposed layout and it’ll be about 210’
I’m officially hooked-thanks a lot! 😊 Your expertise in backyard railroading is truly impressive, and I’ve been catching up on all your videos, both old and new. I’ve hit the subscribe button too! I’ve been thinking about building a backyard railroad for a while, particularly now to enjoy with my 5-year-old daughter. It seems like a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories, much like the ones you’ve been making with your son. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of questions for you, starting with this: Was your main reason for choosing hard plastic ties over Accu Ties mainly due to shipping costs and economic considerations, or was there another reason? Seems for ease of installation the Accu Ties would be a better choice for a beginner, but then again you seemed to have done quite well for your build using the solid plastic ties.
Hey, thanks for the kind words and we’re glad you’re into it! Ties: We went with solid plastic because we could pick them up, no shipping, and they have somewhat of a benefit with their weight. But all said and done, you’re right! The molded Accu-tie ties are the way to go, no question.
@@minnesotaeerailroad8471👍🏼. Thank you!!! I appreciate the feedback!
