These are great little workhorses. I bought the first commercially available Generic Electric from Plum Cove Studios, later bought another to mu together on the Montana Eastern Railroad. They still run great, and I think my first one number 8004 is nearly 20 years old. Also have enjoyed my 3 phinneas pflats.

Ahhhh......motive power at last !!! It'll be interesting to see what "superstructure" you choose to erect on the running gear.

Ok - I see them now, they are a direct driven cog system (look like mobility scooter motors).
24 volt I also suspect - same as most mobility scooter motors.
Cool - as the way you have the axle ends set up - this allows for slight twist problems to be overcome when travelling on the track.
Must see if I can locate some old mobility scooters with good motors as we can't get Plum Cove here in New Zealand (well not cheaply enough for me anyways)

Do you think it was worth the kit? I am looking to get into 7.5" since I live on an acre in the desert. And apparently I have a money tree... just kidding. I have done plenty of HO scale but nothing this size. Great video. is the aluminum rail worth it or is groovy track and other substitutes better?

Hi! Please remember that we are beginners and we’ve been in our own bubble thus far. If I could change one thing, I would have liked to have visited a club and do a lot of seeing and questioning in real time! But here’s my answers to your questions in my opinion: Yes. I think the kit is worth it as a person with little machining skills and tools. There’s still plenty of personal touches we’ve put in/on this little guy after the base of the kit. As far as track, keep your radius turns as wide as possible. Our aluminum rail is getting chewed up with the sharp turns. But anyway, I’d have no problem recommending Accu-Tie’s ties with the molded base plates essentially making each tie it’s own gauge guide. I hope this helps! Good luck and most importantly, have fun!!

Can't wait to see it running, I hope you can make a bigger body locomotive to make it look cool Instead of a square body.

Yeah, we hope to make it a bit cooler. It’ll still be a bit out of sorts but pretty cool!

That’s a fantastic idea! We’ll have to keep that in mind as we build the shell maybe making templates as we go for ease when making more!

Very cool! Yeah, even though we’ll be throwing the shell together with wood this time around, we’re already thinking how we could make a metallic shell in the future! Thanks, man! …P.S. We got our batteries today! 😬🤞

I love how you keep your son involved. How long did it take you to assemble that locomotive gear section? I really appreciate how you are keeping us involved in your progress.

We took our sweet time putting this together so I’d guess a couple of hours. As far as the powered axels/wheels, they came to us fully assembled.
