I took my Nikon z7II to the top of Colorado's Highest Peak
I spat out my drink with the line, "I could fight a war with this."
Excellent video man, never thought to use my 50mm for landscapes but will definitely try it out. On a separate note, what's the music in the background that comes in at around 5:08? Was looking for that track for ages :D
Why do camera companies keep making cameras that have issues with and charges a lot of money. Great video ❤❤❤
Amazing review comparison. I'm a Nikon user. However Nikons lens selection is pathetic. I held a Sony A7R1 in my hand years ago and thought it felt horrible. Nikons feel so good in your hand all day long. However Sony technology is so far ahead now, its time to switch. Ibeas only worried about DR and this video proves even 61 MP sensors can have great DR. Not too worried about color science as i only shoot raw and edit. Thanks again for the great review comparison.
Which is best for video fx3 or z8?
That was useful - thanks.
I have this lens and like it so far. Mainly for good light. You are not the only person to mention the VC as a weakness. I was wondering if it conflicts with Sonys in body IBIS? Have you tried just using the Sony IBIS without the lens VC? Or the lens VC with no Camera Body IBIS?
Muchas gracias.
The A7R5 stands out as my top choice for several reasons. Its exceptional image quality ensures sharp, vibrant photos with outstanding detail, making it suitable for everything from professional shoots to personal projects. Beyond the camera itself, the variety of lenses available is unmatched. Sony offers an extensive range of native lenses, but the real advantage comes from the availability of third-party options, giving photographers access to even more choices. This means that regardless of your specific needs-whether you're into landscapes, portraits, wildlife, or videography-you’ll find lenses tailored to your style. Another key benefit is the flexibility in price. Both Sony and third-party manufacturers provide lenses at various price points, making it easier to build a versatile kit without breaking the bank. Let's face it: not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on high-end equipment, and the A7R5 ecosystem acknowledges that by catering to photographers of all levels and budgets. Whether you’re a beginner looking to upgrade or a seasoned pro seeking specialized lenses, the A7R5 offers options to suit your needs and financial situation.
Your intro is tooooo looong. I stopped watching. Sorry
me too. Need to speed up everything
I think that is should of had 2 cf express card slots not a sd slot as this will slow your workflow when using it as an overflow as there speeds are slow
Megapixels… way overrated… ever wonder why Canon hasn’t really exceeded 50MP with full frame cameras? Diffraction. Doesn’t matter how sharp your lens is, or how much resolution it throws down, you can’t escape physics. The more you stop down to get a deeper depth of field, the more diffraction eats your fine detail. The more you open the aperture up to get less diffraction, the less is actually in focus. 45-60MP on a full frame camera is about the sweet spot. More than that and diffraction is already in full effect by f/8. I don’t know about you, but I shoot at f/8 to f/16 all the time. More resolution is not helpful.
Great video! I’m thinking about picking this kit up for shooting mountain sports. So, I have similar landscape requirements but with the added challenge of high speed action. Currently, I am using an A7C with a Tamron 28-200. However, I’m thinking about swapping out for an A9i and these two lenses to get up 20 FPS and 20mm focal length. Do you think this two lens kit with the A9 is light enough for backcountry mountain sports and fast enough at f4 to make it a good set up for capturing backcountry skiing and mountain biking? *the A9 is limited to 15 FPS with third party lenses.
I think that would be light enough! Honestly I think you will love that set up! I used the A9 1 and it was maybe my favorite overall experience with a Sony camera
Nice video. How would you compare this to the Sony 70-200mm F4 macro and 1.4 teleconverter combo? From what I can tell Sony better without the converter and better IS?
The Sony has better IS for sure… I would say maybe slightly better IQ but not significantly
@@summitbidThank you very much for the reply!
Kemper, really appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. I can't tell you the number of times I've watch different sections of it over and over as I continue to learn and grow in my photography journey. I had a quick question for you - do you need the long lens head to get the L mount to attach to the tripod or will the L mount attach to the tripod without it? I noticed that the long lens head is a bit on the pricier side. Trying to prioritize what all I can buy and was wondering if the lens head can be a later purchase
Thanks so much for watching and the support! So you can use the L Bracket on any arca Swiss compatible tripod head. I have found that the heads Leofoto makes are all very high quality and are not as expensive. They are also readily available on Amazon
And with the advent of some pretty amazing AI upscaling software, you can take a lower megapixel image that’s already good to begin with, and make it that much larger, especially if you hit the focus accurately for the shot.
Great voice/eye contact! 2 Questions; What is pixel peeping? Can anyone really see a pixel? And, What is a panorama photo?...is it a setting on the camera? or a video of and landscape?
My "vibration reduction mode" is off. It won't allow me to change it due to current settings. I'm following your recommendations.
Are you using an older lens with no EXIF reporting? The camera needs to know a bit about your lens before it can do IBIS (specifically focal length). If that's the case, go to Menu->Setup->Non-CPU lens data, and put in the relevant information.
Welcome back and amazing video as always!
It looks really good, I'm waiting for this to hopefully come to Nikon Z soon. Always thought a 70-300 was underrated for landscapes, a 50-300 is even better.
8:44 truly beauty!
Hi Kemper, Thank you for your very informative video. I just received my Z8 and I am impressed by it. Can you tell me what Anker / powerbank and what smallrig batterycharger you have Regards Marcel
I've seen many (shill) reviews of this lens, since I was considering switching from my Sigma 100-400, mainly due to its size and weight, plus the half-macro adds a lot of versatility. Most of the in-depth reviews point out that at 50mm the edges are rather soft, however on your pictures, they are fine - I think this has to do with the longer distance (test charts vs mountain) and the non planar subject of yours. What I appreciate about your review though (which is quite unique sadly) is that you make it obvious that this level of stabilization doesn't make much sense. It barely exists for photo, and it is unacceptable for video (in my opinion).
I do agree with not needing the memory 1, 2, 3 setting.
Some good information, but so long… I got about half way before I couldn’t concentrate any longer
Well I appreciate you watching at all
Hey Kemper, awesome recommendation on pairing the two F4 lenses together for landscape photography! I have an interest in panoramas but have noticed you shoot without rotating along the nodal point, is there a post production workflow that corrects for that?
Honestly I have never really had a problem with parallax (what the nodal point corrects for) in my photography. Really you might have an issue if you have a close foreground object in your panorama. That all being said, 75% of my photography is panoramic and I don’t even own nodal rails. Much more important is a leveling base on your tripod. But honestly I got my start just shooting handheld which you actually do most of the leveling and rotating with your body.
Thanks for your real-world comparison of the differences that matter - field usage and image quality (at least the on-screen images). Decisions - decisions. I have to admit that my experience and reflexes with Nikon menus and buttons will be the tie-breaker. It's nice to not re-think everything when trying to capture a fleeting scene.
Sound logic. If you have Nikon experience I definitely don’t feel like the a7rv offers enough to make the switch. I was the opposite for a number of years, but now I’m pretty used to both.
hi, can you use my 24-70mm gm ii for landscape or should i buy another lens?
That is a fantastic lens for landscape! I have video on this channel about the Nikon version but you can at least see some examples of what I have been able to capture with a 24-70
I wanted to write a whole story, but lets reduce it to 1 question. Does Sony have the "red screen" setup for star shooting like the Nikon has? In the end it's a tool and you need to love using it.
It unfortunately does not. When it come to features for Astro photography, Nikon trounces Sony
whats happening to the channel ? why the change in name ?
After doing a bunch of research, we decided that we needed to break the content into two channels. The Kemper Simpich channel is now landscape photography focused and the brand new Camera Nerds channel is for general photo and video. I talk a bit more about it in the Outro for this video.
Tamron is going wild with these lenses. 28-200 2.8-5.6 28-300 4-7.1 50-300 4.5-6.3 50-400 4.5-6.3 I’m assuming the largest and most expensive 50-400 is also the sharpest with the best build quality.
I have heard that as well. Would love to try it!
since this video went back to z9 and allso hasselblad but am waiting for nikon to do i high mega pixel camera
Awesome dedication at the end. I climbed Missouri on 06-26-97 solo while there was still a lot of frozen snow on that approach route. It was a lot of fun, and I was equipped with my ice ax, so the steepness took a bit of time but was successful in summiting, but I always packed prepared for most anything. I did descend down around the S/W side which still had snow on it with no distinct trail. By that time the sun had hit the snow, and it was to say the least tough going and a long haul due to falling through the snow up to my waist with each step much of the time all the way around to the saddle between Missouri and Belford. Missouri was my 11th 14er of the 34 that I did eventually climb a total of 13 for 1997.
Hi, for landscape, nature and general photography, what would you recommend between Canon RF 70-200 2.8 or RF 100-500? I don’t mind the focal differences.
I’m going to choose the 100-500 every time… I actually made a video where I discuss why here:My TOP 10 Lenses For Landscape Photography (Nikon, Canon, Sony) ruclips.net/video/XAK9MqcMnCY/видео.html
I think this is the first video of yours that ive seen. I love your approach and demeanor. Im subscribing and cant wait to see more.
Great shots and edits. Whats the music?
I can't agree that the A7RV EVF is any better than the z8 regardless of the MP.
Just curious, were you using the a7rv in high-quality mode?
Initially the EVF was in low resolution as I quickly noticed the quality drop when focusing. This then seemed to equalise after setting it to high quality. However I still preferred the Nikon EVF which looked clearer. @@summitbid
@@summitbid Once you increase to 120Hz, Resolution drops to less than a ~5M dot EVF. And while you are focusing it drops to barely more than the Nikon (or even less if we use a realistic scaling). If it very distracting whenever the viewfinder gets fuzzy. Deactivating anti-flicker is supposed to help but that experience is with having the setting off. Also the Nikon one renders way more smoothly and with almost no perceivable lag. Especially when it gets darker it's still usable unlike the Sony's. It's a prime example of a manufacturer optimizing towards better spec sheet numbers that don't fully translate to real-life usage.
I had the Nikon Z8/9 - brilliant all-round, wildlife and sports cameras. But in the end they were too big and too heavy for me and it's a shame that the form factor of the Z7II wasn't retained in the Z8. I miss the Z 4/24-120mm. Instead, Sony has the 4/20-70mm and the new 4/70-200mm, lenses that Nikon lacks.
Just a fun fact. When the Nikon D3s came out in 2009, the new price in todays money was $7,320.70 😊 If a Nikon Z9 could go back in time to 2009 prices it would retail for $3,755.72
I was just recently discussing this with someone… a canon 1Dx would be almost $10,000 if it came out today! In a lot of ways it’s never been a better time to be a camera nerd.
What’s with the megapixel obsession? I’ve seen photographers take stunning photos on 2 mp
Holy Moly, this is a guide!!!! Thanks for this work!!!! It is very helpful!
Thanks a lot for the informatio n. What about uding the NOCT 58 /0.9 FOR PRTRAIT ?
Kukos for hiking into this remote location with all this gear. This video demonstrates a most significant benefit of the Sony A7R5 versus the Nikon Z8 - size and weight. As a mountaineer, there is simply no justification to cart an extra ounce into the backcountry - let alone the 1/2 lb. weight difference and bulk between the two bodies. Also, generally, lens choices for Sony are a bit lighter too. All other differences are trivial in comparison. ps-the A7R5 plus the Tamron 28-200 are the awesome, backcountry combo.
Dude, SHHHHHHHHHSH
Went up there back in the 90s. My buddy learned a valuable lesson on packing light. Full on calf cramps about 2/3rds of the way up with an 80 lb pack, and about 50 lbs of it he didn’t need. Beautiful area and a great memory for me
80lbs? the fuck was he carrying?
@@adamzetek785 old metal tripod for a camera, camera, canvas tarp, old school sleeping bag, about 20 lbs in food, beer, Coleman lantern. It all got left behind some willows and picked it up on the way down
Great video. Some truly beautiful shots presented. The beauty of the Sony f1.2 is the consistent sharpness at landscape suitable apertures.
Is it true that the ISO is maxed out at 3200 on the A7RV? Kind of a deal breaker for one that loves low light photography. Thanks for sharing!
No it can go much higher. I personally don’t go above 3200 for my work… but honestly it’s not terrible up to 12,500
"One is more of an emotional choice..." Most of them seem to fall into that category.
For sure. Favorites are a subjective thing. I want to have an emotional connection with my work and, to some degree, with the tools I use.
Wanted to ask a follow up question. For each manufacturer like Sony, Canon, and Nikon could you possible pick the lenses for a good landscape kit? For instance do you favor mostly zooms for flexibility, f/4 for smaller lighter? I.e For Sony would it be the f/4 or f/2.8 holy trinity like the 16-35/2.8 GM II, 24-70/2.8 GM II, 70-200/2.8 GM II, and 100-400 GM or the f/4 equivalents for example? I have lots of primes but see very few landscape photographers using them on a regular basis, you only had two (that I do own) on your list. I have typically built my kits for events and portraits but I want to focus on landscapes. Take care.
Nice video and tribute to your granddad. And great shots with that Leica, the landscapes your brother took had that “Leica glow”. Keep putting it to good use! I had several film and digital Leicas. Outstanding cameras, and the lenses are world class. I have a Digilux 3 with a Summilux 25mm (50mm equiv) and its image quality is incredible for an 17-18 yo camera. People say the “PanaLeicas” are just rebranded Panasonics but it’s not completely true. The color science tech in Leica cameras is all Leica, not Panasonic. The “PanaLeica” lenses are built in Japan to Leica specs and QC and are branded Leica lenses.
