This was as helpful of a video comparing these two cameras as any that I have seen so far. Thank you very much for the effort put into this. Subscribed!
Very good video with much honesty. Maybe the Sony fits better in women hands... In my case, Nikon is the winner. I am a Nikon shooter and I recently bought a Z8. What a great camera ! Love the Nikon ergonomic bodies since the D200. I like the 61 Mpx of the Sony too but I think the Nikon color science is better than the Sony even if it can be corrected in post. It seems more natural as the light is noticeably warmer at sun rise (in many cases in your video the Sony is too cold in tones).
Thank you for putting this together. I know how much work and money it takes to do these comparisons. You just relieved gear acquisition syndrome anyone who bought into one system and were wondering if they should have bought into the other.
Thank you. Love this comparison. Image quality is superb on both, colours, Nikon being a bit warmer, but not always, not really a big of a deal. It might be even just difference between lenses, that makes huge difference too (in extreme - compare some vintage lenses, for example different Soviet MIR-1V lenses - some variants makes neutral colour, some desaturated colours, then compare those with Super Takumar which renders heavily into warm tones. Same camera, same light, huge differences in result). What I find interesting is that Nikon seems to keep a bit more detail in clouds in final edits (more contras, but might be just the way you edited them). Resolution difference is... quite insignificant IMO. Yes, noticable difference, but I dont feel its enought I would just go 60MPx over 45MPx just because of resolution. Seems to me like the main difference and deciding factor in body itself for landscapes is just ergonomics (for me personally that button placement on sony all on back all on right side is far bigger advantage than any negative from smaller form. Especially after using A7II for few months, which is even smaller, when I found out that having one finger under camera body doesnt cause any problems). Then there are other areas that have more value for decision - lenses, use case (i.e. do you use it for landscape only? stills only?...) and also long term support - its undeniable that Nikon really improves its camera systems significantly over time with firmware updates, unfortunatelly cant be said about Sony.
18:30 that's the thing.. for pure landscape photography, you don't really care about autofocus, burst shooting at 20 fps and many other cool functionalities the z8 has. You care about resolution (a7rv), colorimetry (usually nikon) and lens sharpness corner to corner (sony is getting a lot better at this). They are both excellent camera but the Z8 is just a lot more versatile. If you only do landscape photography in normal weather conditions, the a7rV is probably a better bet. If you have extreme weather condition, if you want 8k video, if you do animal photography or if you already have nikon lenses, just go for the z8
I just prefer the Nikon system, owning a Z6 and Z9 with some fantastic Nikon glass, no it's not perfect, but no system is, and if i would want a system uniquely for landscape, i would add either a Hasselblad X2D or. a Fuji GFX 100S !
Any experience using the Z8 with a capture clip on a backpack? If I'm doing landscape photography, I'm hiking with the camera and want it there ready for quick access, not stuffed away in a bag. I use an A7R3 now and find it basically unnoticeable when attached with the clip.
So I actually have extensive experience with both the a7r3 and z8 on a capture clip and the z8 is not intolerable but not as comfortable as the Sony. The z8 feels just slightly too big for everything (capture clips, backpacks exe) but then feels amazing when you hold it. At the end of the day I think the z8 will annoy you for a bit on the clip but ultimately will become unnoticeable like Sony.
SOOC the Nikon images looked better. Final edit I preferred the Sony images by a wide margin. I find that really interesting and not what I expected. I'm interested in a larger sensor system and the finalists are the new Fuji GFX 100 II, the A7RV and the Z8. I may have to give the A7RV more consideration. Thanks for the great comparison.
Your observation is very interesting. I edited the photos after I recorded and I actually like how the Sony files turned out as well. This whole process has actually been very interesting and surprising for me
@@summitbid There are a few things about the Z8 that are interesting. But the size and weight kind of make it a non-starter for landscapes especially compared to the A7RV. (That battery life really sucks too.) We edit our photos anyway so what really matters is the final results, not what the out of camera jpegs look like. I would have never expected the Sony files to polish up so well as you have shown. I'm also really liking the 20-70 f4 and 70-200 f4 Sony combo, with a 100-400 available should I want one, but otherwise, 2 lenses and done. The Fuji GFX doesn't have anything reasonable beyond about 160mm FF equivalent, so that's kind of a bummer there.
@@anadrol9934 Well, truth be told, I am very satisfied with my Fuji 40mp sensor cameras, X-T5 and X-H2. The size, weight, cost and system is just hard to beat, with image quality that is equivalent to 40+ mp full frame. I could spend a lot of money, but I wouldn't be gaining much at all and losing a lot.
Great location and photos. Thanks a lot for this review, great confirmation about A7RV landscape photography capabilities (amount of details; also in shadows, great DR, very good color science...) Amazing!
The difference in resolution between the two is about 15%. The equivalent print sizes would be 20" x 30" for the Z8 and 23" x 35" for the A7RV. Who will notice that except a person with a magnifying glass, physical or electronic in LR? A feature which is missing in the Z8, but I expect will return in the first or second firmware update, is "Exposure Delay Mode". It has been in every 'tier-2' Nikon pro body for a decade, and for some reason it was removed from the Z9 and Z8. Firmware [Edit: 4.0] put it back in the Z9, so it seems like it will be put back in the Z8 as well.
I believe the E-D-Mode was just added in a recent firmware update. Hard to believe they left it out in the first place. Makes one wonder what the project leaders & programmers photograph & with what. Probably figured the cameras are geared toward portrait, wedding &, wildlife & has no mechanical shutter! Just guessing.
@@thomastuorto9929 Yes, the lack of a mechanical shutter might be why they left it out: "No moving parts, so no need for the delay." They forgot that our finger is a moving part, unless we have a remote.
The Sony wins for me. Very noticeable difference in detail, smaller and lighter size for carrying, many more lens choices, etc.. Sony also has an excellent 20mm f/1.8 that was not mentioned, as well as the PZ 16-35mm f/4 G both very good image quality and nice and light for hiking with.
Great Video, enjoyed the comparison. Big hands… and 6’8", always used a battery extension grip for size on Canons. Moved to Sony and same applies, battery grip (3rd party) solves the larger size fit and comfort when needed for handhold. Sony’s sensors have been leading for years and continues… Nikon has much to like but Sony in my opinion for file size, resolution, sharpness, detail, true capture from Sensor to Raw converter in C1, LR or On1, Sony takes it. Battery life superior says a lot for Sony electronics, Software Customization of controls is more than needed, but available. Image comparison in my view… RUclips of your side by sides, Sony looked sharper and more dynamic range. The Nikon is warmer but muddier or softer. Nikon & Canon were leaders in film and DSLR, ignored Sony’s direction until proven superior… now working hard to beat Sony in mirrorless digital. The A7RV, and new A9iii are outstanding achievements… I can afford 1 glass set, Sony easily wins for me.
Amazing video. Answered a ton of questions. To my eye, the color, tonality, punch, and 3d effect of the Nikon is second to none. Sony fans say anything is replicable in post but I have yet to see that in reality.
To your eye. A clearly biased fan. I’m a canon user and using both first hand and not watching a video the a7r5 easily wins the comparison. Much better dynamic range, colours and contrast. Your clueless take represents fanboys who lack any understanding and the fact you think anything isn’t replicable in post shows you’re a novice. I ended up investing in Sony as well after trialing both. Also you must love shooting for much less time with the horrid battery life of the Nikon. Lol did you actually watch the video better detail, dynamic range and more contrast and colour is all subjective.

Thanks for your real-world comparison of the differences that matter - field usage and image quality (at least the on-screen images). Decisions - decisions. I have to admit that my experience and reflexes with Nikon menus and buttons will be the tie-breaker. It's nice to not re-think everything when trying to capture a fleeting scene.
Sound logic. If you have Nikon experience I definitely don’t feel like the a7rv offers enough to make the switch. I was the opposite for a number of years, but now I’m pretty used to both.
Sony A7RIV, Sony A7RIVA, Sony A7RV and Sony A7CR have 61 megapixels, Nikon have only 45 megapixels (Nikon Z8 is also big and large), so with the very best prime Lenses you will get better results for Landscape Photography with Sony Cameras for large printing. I never use zoom !
Muchas gracias.
I just happened across your channel...I'm considering making a change from my a7rv to Z8. I'm mainly a portrait photographer and really looking at the hybrid aspect too. * I'm wondering if you have tested any of the E-Mount adapters to Z-Mount (i.e. using Sony glass on the Z8)?
Kukos for hiking into this remote location with all this gear. This video demonstrates a most significant benefit of the Sony A7R5 versus the Nikon Z8 - size and weight. As a mountaineer, there is simply no justification to cart an extra ounce into the backcountry - let alone the 1/2 lb. weight difference and bulk between the two bodies. Also, generally, lens choices for Sony are a bit lighter too. All other differences are trivial in comparison. ps-the A7R5 plus the Tamron 28-200 are the awesome, backcountry combo.
The A7R5 stands out as my top choice for several reasons. Its exceptional image quality ensures sharp, vibrant photos with outstanding detail, making it suitable for everything from professional shoots to personal projects. Beyond the camera itself, the variety of lenses available is unmatched. Sony offers an extensive range of native lenses, but the real advantage comes from the availability of third-party options, giving photographers access to even more choices. This means that regardless of your specific needs-whether you're into landscapes, portraits, wildlife, or videography-you’ll find lenses tailored to your style. Another key benefit is the flexibility in price. Both Sony and third-party manufacturers provide lenses at various price points, making it easier to build a versatile kit without breaking the bank. Let's face it: not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on high-end equipment, and the A7R5 ecosystem acknowledges that by catering to photographers of all levels and budgets. Whether you’re a beginner looking to upgrade or a seasoned pro seeking specialized lenses, the A7R5 offers options to suit your needs and financial situation.
Personally, I prefer the ergonomics of the z8, as I have large hands. I like the weighty feel. But the lens eco system makes it hard not to be swayed into the Sony. Nikon has top glass, but just not as many options. I have yet to wrestle with 61mp file sizes yet. Hard drives and card updates required.
Honestly, I really appreciate this comment. Sitting here trying to decide between these two. I have an older D850, and was waiting for its replacement. Pretty close to pulling the trigger on the Z8, but, but my mind keeps telling me that the A7R5 will be better for most use cases. Auto focus is better, it’s smaller, the lenses are lighter, it has a higher resolution viewfinder, and the screen is fully articulating. Lastly, the Sony battery is so much better. I want to like the Z8, but I honestly think Sony is the best way to go (it hurts to admit that lol).
@@RazeTheWeakdude there is a new firmware update for the a7RV improves ibis better overall stability. Now I get super sharp photos at slow shutter speeds so awesome 😊.
Hi, I have an issue that you might help me to make my final decision: in short, after switching from sonya1 because I didn’t like colours and also a7cR that was slow, still i own gfx100s with all gf lenses and i love 16bit images BUT it’s bulky and slow to be enough versatile for all kinds of photography! Recently i tested Nikon Z8 that I believe is all in one camera for what i meed and reliable for any scenarios. BUT 14 vs 16bit image! Although in theory humane yes cannot see more that 8bit but I believe i can see and appreciate how much is deep 16bit image in camera, monitor and print! So, shall I sacrifice 16bit IQ to have all in one camera gear to cover all kinds of photography i need, or i should forget about all in one and focus on landscape and still life photography (only) and maybe portraits, but achieve 16bit image for best cropping possibility and also x-large printing? Thank you.
I have used the GFX as well and came to conclusion that while the IQ was fantastic, I was able to get better overall images with a full-frame system because of versatility. 16 bit is awesome, but I honestly felt the editing versatility was offset by the Fuji having a strong “baked-in” look that wasn’t my favorite all the time. My personal system is Sony, but the z8 was a fantastic camera and honestly I would be surprised if you missed the Fuji.
I wanted to write a whole story, but lets reduce it to 1 question. Does Sony have the "red screen" setup for star shooting like the Nikon has? In the end it's a tool and you need to love using it.
having tested z8 sony a7r v and z9 sony with 4 shot pixel shift is the sharpest as long as you use high quality lenses sony colours to me are more difficult to manipulate than nikons in the end i sold them all and got a z7 ii im waiting for canon r1 which will be a beast for wildlife and either nikon z7 iii or canon r5 ii both should have 60mpx sensors and i belive nikon will be using pixel shift on the next cameras so it was a calculated desicion
I had the Nikon Z8/9 - brilliant all-round, wildlife and sports cameras. But in the end they were too big and too heavy for me and it's a shame that the form factor of the Z7II wasn't retained in the Z8. I miss the Z 4/24-120mm. Instead, Sony has the 4/20-70mm and the new 4/70-200mm, lenses that Nikon lacks.
Thanks for the vid. If you only shot with one of either of the cameras only, you wouldn't be missing out on what the other has to offer. With that said after watching this vid, the Nikon color seems to be a little better or warmer & the Sony has a much better resolution. It showed on my 6 yr. old then cost $220.00 monitor. Would have liked to seen the colors from both at ISO's 400-800 &, 1200. Have you shot Astro with the Sony R5 also? Wondering about noise for night photos from the higher resolutions. Thank you for any replies.
It’s landscape dude. You can use every Sony lens on the Z cameras. I personally would choose the Z7ii over Z8 for landscapes as the sensor is better. For everything else Z8. It’s impressive that the Z8 can keep up with A7r5 for landscapes, because it blows the A7R5 out of the water for other genres of photography.
Sorry to give you the news but the A7RV is way better for macro shooting then the Z8, especially handheld, based on my own tests and needs. The punch-in AF works better, the focus square is easier to see on the LCD, and the IBIS is better. I would’ve preferred to stay with the Z8 because I really enjoy shooting with Nikon Z cameras in general but ended up getting the A7RV for close focusing work. So, I wouldn’t agree with your statement that it “blows the A7RV out of the water for other genres of photography”. YMMV.
Just a fun fact. When the Nikon D3s came out in 2009, the new price in todays money was $7,320.70 😊 If a Nikon Z9 could go back in time to 2009 prices it would retail for $3,755.72
I was just recently discussing this with someone… a canon 1Dx would be almost $10,000 if it came out today! In a lot of ways it’s never been a better time to be a camera nerd.
I feel like a lot of people might be surprised that Sony makes the sensor for the Nikon Z8 that combined with Nikons image quality makes for a superior camera honestly the Sony a1 is more of a comparison than this one in my opinion. Plus the Nikon is a great hybrid I mean let’s be honest 8k at 60 is crazy good for the price range this camera falls into.
Sony makes some great cameras and really caters to RUclipsrs specifically. I just personally cannot get over the fact that most creators act like Sony is a god amongst camera line ups and nothing else compares. I see people in these comments saying Sony has better lens options, which is purely NOT the case, different maybe, but not light years ahead of anyone else like most claim. Almost every argument I see in favor of Sony just reminds me of HYPEBEAST stuff... I think most of it comes from the fact that Sony has a billion different cams for all occasions, which is great, but Nikon ALWAYS comes back with a beast of a lineup. Some of the Z lenses are the best lenses ever when measured by DXO Mark. I think Sony just has better marketing and more "creator focus" than Nikon. Just like Apple vs PC. Also, the Sony EGO is real. Sony users think very highly of themselves simply for picking Sony and look down on anyone that uses anything other than Sony.
For landscape photography many cameras can produce equal and better than either. The Nikon Z7_2 will produce exactly the same files in experienced hands. Wildlife or high speed sports are a different subject. Better to go a d spend time refining your composition and file development skills will improve your portfolio far more than fussing over minute differences between top cameras. 😊
People still need to buy a camera. And these two are the best options by two top brands. I get the argument that refining your skills makes a bigger difference, and it’s largely true, but I don’t think it makes comparisons irrelevant. As your comment that “many” cameras will produce equal or better is not true. The medium format cameras from Fuji or hassleblad probably do but don’t have the lens options. You are correct the final image from the z7ii (or the Sony a7riv) will look similar, but I would argue that other features on the cameras will make real difference to landscape photographers.
I appreciate your video. After watching it I believe that these cameras are very similar in performance. I have an observation on the setup you are using to record your video, it does not appear to be very sharp.
Initially the EVF was in low resolution as I quickly noticed the quality drop when focusing. This then seemed to equalise after setting it to high quality. However I still preferred the Nikon EVF which looked clearer. @@summitbid
@@summitbid Once you increase to 120Hz, Resolution drops to less than a ~5M dot EVF. And while you are focusing it drops to barely more than the Nikon (or even less if we use a realistic scaling). If it very distracting whenever the viewfinder gets fuzzy. Deactivating anti-flicker is supposed to help but that experience is with having the setting off. Also the Nikon one renders way more smoothly and with almost no perceivable lag. Especially when it gets darker it's still usable unlike the Sony's. It's a prime example of a manufacturer optimizing towards better spec sheet numbers that don't fully translate to real-life usage.

:) the sony is more affordable used in this moment in my country. Like 600 dollars less.
Amazing review comparison. I'm a Nikon user. However Nikons lens selection is pathetic. I held a Sony A7R1 in my hand years ago and thought it felt horrible. Nikons feel so good in your hand all day long. However Sony technology is so far ahead now, its time to switch. Ibeas only worried about DR and this video proves even 61 MP sensors can have great DR. Not too worried about color science as i only shoot raw and edit. Thanks again for the great review comparison.
You mentioned that the battery of Z8 dropped 40% in just 45 minutes of shooting. This is very shocking and disappointing to hear! Have you tried using a portable charger to charge the Z8 when it is in the field and do you think this can resolve the battery life problem of the Z8?
You can definitely adjust settings to get better battery life (lower view finder fps, airplane mode, faster screen time out) but the battery has been the biggest disappointment of the z8. You could for sure charge it up in your pack with a power bank.
@@summitbid Yeah I wish it has a "power saving mode" just like my phone so that I don't have to fiddle around the settings. As for the charger, I was meaning charging the camera when it was operating at the same time, but I am worried that the power drain of Z8 will outrun the supply from the battery charger, as I may want to use the Z8 to shoot time lapse sequences and the battery life is not a good news for me.
@@chanjeff4406 The Z8 has a USB-PD port so you could plug in an 10,000 mAh power bank, 5x the capacity of the regular EN-EL15 battery. With the battery grip, one battery is also hot-swappable, allowing the time-lapse sequence to continue while you change the battery. The Z8 probably has better heat dissipation than the A7RV, but that has the side-effect that the cold temperature drained it faster. Having an external power bank which is kept warm would probably have better results.
@@livejames9374 The fix is applied on when the camera is connected to a smart device via Bluetooth or WiFi. The OP's situation is completely different here.
Nikon Z8 with 24-120 f4 wins for landscapes. It is just amazing combo with great reach and IQ Sony colours and ergonomics are 😬 Buut both are great cameras.
Holy crap...the dynamic range part of the test, both of these cameras blew me away. I do like the colors a little better on the Nikon though, surprisingly. Great video.
One recall for a lug is not really something you should base a decision off of. Besides, Sony has had many cameras recalled for warped bodies and worst errors. All camera manufacturers have had recalls.

Can’t disagree here. Would love to try out those systems
From what I’ve seen, the hassy is way better for landscapes due to better colors, but horrible for everything else because it sucks at autofocus.
@@summitbid Thanks, that's very helpful!
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography The GFX doesn't have any ultra wide lens, no 12mm is even planned !!! Whereas I have a Laowa 9mm for Sony...
The Sony 24-105/f4 ist very versatile too…use it on A7R3 as a travel Lens ….
@@UnconventionalReasoning Yup! The only reason that might make sense that comes to mind. Or what's left of it.
Since the last firmware update the exposure delay mode has been added to the z8 (but you probably already know.
@@HeikoBertram Thanks, I had probably seen it in a video but forgot.
Which is best for video fx3 or z8?
The Sony wins for me. Very noticeable difference in detail, smaller and lighter size for carrying, many more lens choices, etc.. Sony also has an excellent 20mm f/1.8 that was not mentioned, as well as the PZ 16-35mm f/4 G both very good image quality and nice and light for hiking with.
is the shutter any quieter than on the SONY RRRRRRRR models - AND how BAD is BANDING in e shutter mode in LED lighting ?

I think this is the first video of yours that ive seen. I love your approach and demeanor. Im subscribing and cant wait to see more.
Hello. But is the story of Moiré in the EVF of the Sony A7RV is true? Is it just a bad talk? If EVF Moirè it's true, could it be resolved/fix ?
Muchas gracias.
I just happened across your channel...I'm considering making a change from my a7rv to Z8. I'm mainly a portrait photographer and really looking at the hybrid aspect too. * I'm wondering if you have tested any of the E-Mount adapters to Z-Mount (i.e. using Sony glass on the Z8)?
I actually have and while I did get some good shots it wasn’t very reliable.
Hi..I too am in the same boat. Did you switch to Z8? If so, how is your experience?
You can adapt any e mount lense on Nikon. So what system has a wider variety of lenses?
Personally, I prefer the ergonomics of the z8, as I have large hands. I like the weighty feel. But the lens eco system makes it hard not to be swayed into the Sony. Nikon has top glass, but just not as many options. I have yet to wrestle with 61mp file sizes yet. Hard drives and card updates required.
since this video went back to z9 and allso hasselblad but am waiting for nikon to do i high mega pixel camera
I own both if them , honest to say , I prefer A7RV because of its size , freedom of function and eye af system.

I bought both. Took the Sony back.
@@mathieupoag any specific reasons for keeping the Nikon and returning the Sony?
It unfortunately does not. When it come to features for Astro photography, Nikon trounces Sony
having tested z8 sony a7r v and z9 sony with 4 shot pixel shift is the sharpest as long as you use high quality lenses sony colours to me are more difficult to manipulate than nikons in the end i sold them all and got a z7 ii im waiting for canon r1 which will be a beast for wildlife and either nikon z7 iii or canon r5 ii both should have 60mpx sensors and i belive nikon will be using pixel shift on the next cameras so it was a calculated desicion
after the r1 and the z1 and after that the S1RX mk II, Leica SL4s limited edition at the end because we all know the Germans did it the best!
lol the r1 is a 24 mp beast and r5ii turned out to be 45mp
Thorough and insightful review.
Have not found this to be reliable and would not recommend.
@@summitbidI’ve been using GM lenses and haven’t had any issues. What did you try out?
Sorry to give you the news but the A7RV is way better for macro shooting then the Z8, especially handheld, based on my own tests and needs. The punch-in AF works better, the focus square is easier to see on the LCD, and the IBIS is better. I would’ve preferred to stay with the Z8 because I really enjoy shooting with Nikon Z cameras in general but ended up getting the A7RV for close focusing work. So, I wouldn’t agree with your statement that it “blows the A7RV out of the water for other genres of photography”. YMMV.
@@doogieham nothing wrong with differing opinions.
“You can use every Sony lens on Z Mount” 😂 times are rough for Nikon fanboys. Now is the time to switch.
Just a fun fact. When the Nikon D3s came out in 2009, the new price in todays money was $7,320.70 😊
If a Nikon Z9 could go back in time to 2009 prices it would retail for $3,755.72
I was just recently discussing this with someone… a canon 1Dx would be almost $10,000 if it came out today!
Sony users think very highly of themselves simply for picking Sony and look down on anyone that uses anything other than Sony.
lol this is a pathetic comment
Good thing you left a pathetic rebuttal/response then, huh?
@johncarlan quite amusing that a person could feel so strongly against a freakin camera haha
Z8 is a sports action camera
I can't agree that the A7RV EVF is any better than the z8 regardless of the MP.
Just curious, were you using the a7rv in high-quality mode?
Newest firmware addresses a battery drain issue w/Z8
@@livejames9374 The fix is applied on when the camera is connected to a smart device via Bluetooth or WiFi. The OP's situation is completely different here.

The z8 really is significantly larger. It’s feels better in the hand but worse in the bag.
Holy crap...the dynamic range part of the test, both of these cameras blew me away. I do like the colors a little better on the Nikon though, surprisingly. Great video.
It seems to me that a comparison of the Sony A9 and Nikon Z8 would make more sense as both have stacked sensors
Thank you for sharing
U r Doing Great :)
You used expensive sony lenses in comparison
Might want to factor in which camera is the recall leader.
One recall for a lug is not really something you should base a decision off of. Besides, Sony has had many cameras recalled for warped bodies and worst errors. All camera manufacturers have had recalls.
The Canon R5 should have been added to this comparison.
We would have loved too include that camera! Maybe sometime in the future we will!
