How to Draw BASICS: Perspective [part 2]
You have brought this upon yourself... Tolkien's elves are much like angels embodied in physical form. Due to this and their longevity, their reproductive habits differ greatly from humans. As dictated by Manwe the Valar that was put in charge of all of Arda, Because they are permanent fixtures in the land of Arda, elves will marry only once. They are "seldom swayed by the desires of their body, "In addition, Tolkien's elves being spirits essentially that are embodied in physical form can see other spirits, be it other elves, or in a couple of instances, Man. They typically know who they will marry very early in life upon seeing them. Though they will not wed or engage in activities necessarily at that time. Once properly married, they do, however, engage in these activities, but since they are spirits in body of physical form, they choose when children are made. In addition to this, Tolkien's elves will not succumb to any undesirable acts and will release their spirits to Mandos, the afterlife, before anything that would defile them happens. This is partially because eventually, as permanent fixtures on Arda, the elves will be given a new physical body at some point im the future. However, the heavy emphasis of the spirituality of elves means that Elves typically do not reproduce during times of war or stress so that their children would not be harmed by the loss of a parent. So yes, Tolkien's elves do reproduce slower than humans, but they do still also have desires, they're just far more in control of them. In fact, not related to sexual desire, tokens elves actually feel things far deeper than humans do. This is of particular note when the elves first met humans and didn't know that death was a thing. When their first friends among men died, they were deeply grieved.
I really appreciate your efforts! I have a quick question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
I come from Zulu's side of the fence, love your drawing style, +1 subscriber.
Hey there! I'm an artist, but I also read a lot of philosophy and economics, and I have actually worked in a trade (electrical). I'm also a friend of Zulu(in fact, some of my art is featured in his video), so that's how I was introduced here. I actually quite like your channel, I always respect people who do art analysis and tutorials. I actively look out for good tutorials to learn from and improve my process. Your channel is very approachable, and I have friends who want to get into art that I am likely to direct your way. On the topic of this video, I think I could clarify certain things that may have been confusing because they are grounded in the philosophical perspective Zulu applies, which is heterodox to ordinary assumptions. I hope my comment is helpful and enspiriting, rather than burdensome - I suspect from the description "I never want to hear another pro-ai argument again." that you find this quite tiresome. But I think I could do something helpful to you by providing context for some of the statements made by Zulu and others in response to this video. I was going to go through and respond to particular timestamps, but I felt like my responses came off adversarial, rather than contextual, so I will instead try to make general statements: One thing that you may have realized following your debate with Zulu is that he is arguing that morality and law are objective, rather than subjective or positive. What he means by this is that there are universally correct claims about how humans should act, and how conflicts over scarce means should be resolved. This is the way Zulu is extremely critical of the status quo - intellectual property is not "law" because it is actually a violation of natural rights. In the video, you explicitly state the claim that morality is subjective, which I suspect reveals deeper philosophical differences between you and Zulu than your opinion on AI art and governance. On the notion of a double standard between AI being easy to use and being difficult to use, and the topic of opportunity cost, I think this misunderstands the point. Like any technological advancement, the process becomes easier in certain aspects, but unaffected in other aspects. My good tools made working as an electrician easier, but it did not trivialize the vocation. It made a specific part of the process more rapid, and as such contributed to the overall efficiency. Similarly, generative AI tools make parts of the process easier, but they do not trivialize the vocation. For the same reason the gradient tool in CSP does not trivialize the profession, or even digital art programs themselves. They make parts of the process easier, more accessible. When it comes to opportunity cost, it is not that it will make everything possible to everyone, but that it is a gradual improvement. Opportunity costs obviously cannot be reduced to zero, because we are beings with finite time in a world of scarce means. But the development of tools and capital is precisely how I am not condemned to the grueling labours of my ancestors, who lived as serfs or slaves. Another thing I think Zulu is sensitive to that you aren't is the notion of "regulation" being a form of aggression, rather than a societal agreement or negotiation of some sort. State rules and regulations are not passed by unanimous consent, and they apply to people regardless of whether they consent to them. As such, the state will necessarily enforce these regulations on people, with the ultimate threat of violence. This came up during the debate, and I feel like it was a major point of disconnection, and may continue to be. I think it takes a horrifying shock to realize that "regulations" are not just a benign way of making people comply with some standard, but actually entail eventual threats of ultimate violence. People *are* thrown in prison and even killed for "violating regulations", it is not fantastical, it is commonplace. Overall, I'm happy to see the resentment over this whole debate becoming less powerful, and that people can have reasonable conversations about it. Although I do feel like it's still upsetting that people try to "mind read" each other and claim people are being "entitled" or "unempathetic", because I think those complaints are belittling and insulting, from both sides.
@@SuperBoyboys hi, thanks for the interest in my channel. i recently uploaded my version of the debate which i highly recommend watching as it addresses some of your points and clarifies some of mine that i don’t feel were worded well enough during the live call
@@blearoyd Thanks for the response! I'll take a look, and I might elaborate further. My intent with my comment isn't necessarily to make a point, but to contextualize some of the statements that get made. It might be better for me to focus on the economics side of that discussion, since that's something I've read quite a lot on. Maybe I'll make that comment on your version of the debate VOD. But I feel like I'm detecting that you find this whole discussion to be rather vexing, rather than stimulating. So I'll ask if you'd prefer not to hear more about it, since I don't want to write something dense and didactic if it would only cause you grief.
@ you’re free to respond to my debate video, i just can’t guarantee i’ll get around to replying in full
I think a solid argument for regulation is false advertising. You can’t market mass manufactured products as handmade, and you can’t market something made over seas as being made domestically. It misleads the consumer and applies value to the item it doesn’t actually have. That’s illegal. AI art is the exact same, and should not be allowed to be marketed as a ‘handmade’ good, unlike real art that requires craftsmanship and time. (not here for the ‘AI aRt IS reAL aRt’ argument) People who can’t see the difference between the two products are either being intentionally obtuse or they’re legitimately stupid. Also bringing in other applications of AI into the art debate is a strawman fallacy, plain and simple. So the whole gotcha about medical AI and how it can be used to benefit people in different contexts is redundant. P.s. great vid! I’m stealing the First Lady Musk joke
@@NorthVC i did have a brief blurb in my response vid that there isn’t even any correlation between ai healthcare and ai art but was willing to ignore that for this discussion cuz we were talking about ai in a slightly broader sense (don’t plagiarize that joke! i’ll take you to court!)
Something to keep in mind is that false advertising is already wrong, as it is theft by deception. Regulation isn't required to figure this out. If necessary, law enforcement would step in under such cases. Adding on further regulation would be banning the use of AI under otherwise permissible circumstances where no one's rights are violated, like with the mandated watermark example.
my live debate with zulu (plus notes) can be found at the end of this video.
Outside of Lord of the Rings, FMAB is the only piece of art where I love every single character. Bar none.
Having listened to this whole conversation more than once, it's abundantly clear to me now why so many of Elon Musk's followers are also big Rick and Morty fans: it's about a callous super genius who thinks emotions are irrelevant who is constantly being chased by the government. Imagine thinking every democracy ever conceived is just like the gestapo lmao
10:45 I interpreted Olivier's disgust with Alex as being sourced from the fact that he ran away from the problem instead of standing up to his superiors against the slaughter. (Thought continued below the cut for vague spoilers) It's the same reason why she seems so supportive and confident in him during the fight against Sloth, where he distinctly chooses not to run
@@okami7dreco786 that’s actually a good point i hadn’t considered until now
I suppose two main questions I'd have given everything else is: When it comes to the two men carving statues, why the inconsistency? Why did the effort of sculpting make copyright violation acceptable? Why think there's a "stalemate" over disabled people, rather than just saying it's wrong to punish them for AI use? Why kick over the guy's wheelchair after he clicked to generate?
i already explained extensively in the video why i and many others still feel defensive of copyright and i did eventually agree with zulu that it's not a good system. if you want to indulge the fantasy that ai users are some sort of oppressed minority group to the point that you think society as a whole would be fine with a disabled person getting shot over image generation then fine, go ahead. i shouldn't have to explain why that's utterly ridiculous. also zulu suggesting that disabled people who choose not to be more "productive" by embracing ai should be left behind is ableist whether he realizes it or not.
@@blearoyd Right, you did agree it's not a good system, but you're still in favor. He asked where the line was drawn, but you didn't give a straight answer, even making it less clear with the statue example where profit was ok. I'm under no such fantasy. But you are in favor of regulation, and regulation has practical implications. You also didn't answer the question. When do the wheelchairs get kicked over, and why that point? I wouldn't say "embracing" but merely accepting. They can give a personal rejection, but to mandate no one else using it is a violation of rights.
@@itsyaboidaniel2919 that was my final reply to you. i will not be responding again no matter how many comments you leave on my videos.
@@blearoyd Understandable. The civilized conversation was appreciated.
God his constant jumping to people who don't like AI use wanting them dead is so childish, it's infuriating.
yknow what's funny - i got a comment on a previous anti-ai vid from someone saying it's actually super cool that the cops can use ai for surveillance now. it would seem there's a few inconsistencies on their side as well...

How is crowdfunding socialist? Crowdfunding is private individuals giving money voluntarily to other private individuals. There is no government, soviet or other collectivist organisation forcing people to do it so how exactly is it socialist? Having the freedom to give other people your money voluntarily is completely with in the free market.
ok so it’s still capitalistic because its private action without government involvement?
@@blearoyd You said its weird that zulu supports crowdfunding when he opposes socialism. I explained how crowdfunding has nothing to do with socialism and is completely normal in a free market economy. Therefore its not weird that zulu supports crowdfunding

This guy apparently just has a problem with laws and any regulation for anything at all. Childish.
How is it childish to not want the government to interfere with personal actions and business through the use of violence?
@itsyaboidaniel2919 fines and court dates. not all minor offenses are solved with violence.
@@v-nus7718 I suppose I already mentioned this in the other reply. If I ignore the minor punishments, the violence escalates by default.
@itsyaboidaniel2919 Pay your fines and go to your court dates then. Ignore the law and thats what happens. If you wanna change the law then either go be some pointless revolutionary or run for office.
@@v-nus7718 This is not an argument, that's justifying extortion. "Pay the gangsters, then." I shouldn't have to, that's the issue. "Either go be some pointless vigilante or become a mob boss yourself." No thanks, I'd rather be left in peace.
I haven't watched the full video yet admittedly, but I find it very telling about his maturity that when asked if a watermark would be a reasonable form of regulation, his response is "Ok but if i don't wanna the police might murder me" which, while ridiculous, is just a catch all response someone could throw out toward the suggestion of... any sort of regulation, really.
That is because liquid zulu is against all regulation for that exact reason
@@Kalakakku_ Because he's childish? I agree.
@@v-nus7718 no because he is against aggression and advocating for the government to use violence would be hypocritical for him
@@Kalakakku_ except that's a strawman, nobody is advocating for him to be murdered. That's a childish hyperbole. Grow up.
@@v-nus7718 Then why does anyone comply with laws? Just ignore them if there are no consequences
A bit of fair warning, somewhat of a wall of text ahead, though I'd say far from unbearable. 10:00 At 2h6m17s in his video, cites CNN, Harvard, and Qian Li et al. If you watched his video response portion, you'd have seen this. 22:09 While it's LiquidZulu's place to answer, I think a fair response is that it does not matter if I am willing, because I simply shouldn't be shot over such a matter. If you think otherwise, look no further than history. "Are you really willing to resist the gestapo?" I shouldn't have to. 30:14 LiquidZulu already answered, you're not allowed to lie about efficacy, that's the fraud. Behind the scenes can be anything, but upfront has required honesty. 34:39 It's as if you didn't hear LiquidZulu''s statement from the lawyer friend, fan artists generally aren't under fair use, you even agreed they're just too small to be worth targeting. 42:40 You missed it. That's the problem. This is using the hammer of the state to destroy competition. It's not anti-corporation, it's anti-competition. 48:00 You fail to see it from a close analogy. Would no art teacher ever be overjoyed if an art book were so good they need not teach their students? 51:05 Simply, you don't. If you choose those wages, this is on you, but in a fair trade there is mutual benefit, and under free market people are free to not work for you. Also, these "slave" wages already occur under government, so what did it solve? Also, ingenuity gives better options, always. 1:09:00 This is where it goes back to rights. The decent thing is to not plagiarize, but you have the right to do it. Also, no, not posting word prompts does not make you a plagiarist, that is case by case, you're starting with guilty until proven innocent. Use your own argument for fan art, if people "can tell" it's fan art, then people "can tell" it's AI art. 1:22:15 To put it bluntly, you are elevating the position of slavery by saying this. Actual slavery is terrible, an actual slave would prefer a wage. Slaves don't get wages, they get to live. 1:39:06 This is like asking "If anyone can draw on a sketch pad while on the toilet, what's the point of artists?" The answer is that some people are better, and provide (as LiquidZulu mentions) more compelling creative products. 1:40:00 You missed it. That is literally what it is, it's competition, forcing relevancy. Also, artists aren't obligated to respect over anyone else, they aren't a higher caste. That's not a problem requiring regulation, nor are any of the others (scams would already be a crime). You can accuse LiquidZulu of not listening, but as Sunny in "I, Robot" asks, can you? Overall cool video, enjoyed watching it, gave it a like.
I love Izumi and Sig so much cause they are literally me and my bf (except he's the shorter one somehow lol, even though I'm South Asian)
Gonna be that guy that gives unsolicited feedback, but video essays tend to breed discussion and hopefully that's welcome. I also felt like I should throw in my two cents as an afab person watching a video about women in media by someone who seems to be amab (I apologize if I'm wrong about that) I don't feel like this video properly explains its point. I don't disagree with the basic thesis that the female characters in FMA:B are interesting or compelling characters, but I'm not sure the video makes the full connection between all your points of why that is You list some traits and story details about the characters in the show, but it isn't clear what actually makes them "good female characters" according to you. You say Winry isn't just stereotypically feminine cause she has "masculine hobbies." Ok. What about it? What point did you want to make with that? You say Izumi is stern but has a maternal side. Ok. What about it? At multiple points, you seem to imply that challenging gender stereotypes while still having a "feminine" side, which you seem to define as vulnerable or maternal in some way, is what makes them good female characters. If that is the point you were trying to make, I personally think that perpetuates stereotypes further at worst, or at best, is not a helpful guide for writing or analyzing characters. And if I'm wrong about how I interpreted your stance or if there is more to it than that, I'd love to hear so but I don't feel the video properly explores that In my perception, from everything you said here, this sense of "good female characters" in the show actually boils down to "the female characters in FMA:B are good because the writing of FMA:B is good." I think it's very telling that you never see a single video or essay about how "good" the male characters of a story are, the same way you never hear anyone talking about "strong male characters." Male characters are STILL to this day the assumed default character and "strong" is an assumed default trait for them. The female characters in FMA:B are all solid characters because the anime just has solid writing. I wasn't convinced by this video that anything enjoyable or interesting about them is inherently tied to their gender. I recognize I likely have some biases or at least some views that are not the majority perspective on this topic because I'm agender. I do not have the same relationship to gender that most of the population does and I don't usually pay much mind to characters' genders when analyzing how they're written. Regardless! My main feedback is just that the video doesn't feel like it has a strong thesis where all the sub points logically tie to your main point of why they're good female characters As a final thought, when I see videos like this, I do always wonder how many women were consulted on the topic, if any. If you didn't do so for this one, I'd always recommend bringing the topic to the demographic you are going to be discussing in the future. I don't want to make assumptions that you didn't do so, but at least in the presentation of this video, it does not feel like an essay with women's voices behind it
in hindsight i do regret not making my thesis more obvious - what i do say is that the women contribute enough to the plot (unlike a lot of shonen) but what i should've added is that they have enough flaws to feel human (unlike some recent Disney/Marvel films). but judging from the comments people understood what i was getting at anyways. what i was saying in terms of stereotypes is that these characters possess both masculine and feminine ones thereby making them less relevant in the process. i think you're overcomplicating that part tbh. as for why i make an effort to point out these characters "maternal" sides is because i sometimes see people make the mistake of thinking that the feminist approach would be to lessen those typically female qualities as much as possible (i.e. a woman dressed in pink is stereotypical and is therefore bad, which it of course isn't) i could've explained that point more in the video but it is what it is. it's true you don't see nearly as many videos exploring how "good" male characters are but i needed a simple, eye-catching title. you can blame youtube's clickbait-y algorithm for that. considering this is just an anime essay and not a documentary... i don't see why i would need to be interviewing people. i just need an understanding of the material. and i would presume a fair amount of people in the comments are women so, again, it would seem that my points resonated well enough.
blearoyd you're being a bit dismissive to the feedback op is giving. They made a valid point about with strong female characters there's usually an expectation that they have to maintain some aspect of feminity which always default to motherhood or vulnerability. Female characters shouldn't have to be "balanced" by gender tropes, what makes a characters complex is a multitude of emotions and human struggles but for women it usually tied to fertility and relationships in some kind of way. It's not enough to show that those things aren't negative or lesser than masculine things but that women ( and men too) are more than the caricatures of gender. They can ambitions and personalities that don't neatly fit into concepts of masculinity or feminity. And finally their last point about consulting other people for a female perspective is a decent consideration. Not a necessity but you aren't a woman, it's an outside experience for you so it may be enlightening to hear what different kinds of women say vs what you may assume via observation.
FMAB has Good characters, Male or Female or even Chimera (💀). But honestly, People who think 'Fanservice = Useless or bad written' are just as delusional as Twitter users thinking their opinion matters. A Good character is a Good Character. Watch if it has depth, symbolism, representation, etc. Not how big or small the tits or abs are.
14:15 I haven't watched She Hulk too, however my feeling for what I've seen of that scene is that they meant it as a gag, with her basically saying <<I'm capable of controlling my anger>> WHILE she's actually starting to lose control (the gag being facts immediately proving her words wrong!). But the fact that she does that by actually saying something like "As a woman, I can do it better than men, because I'm used to men treating me poorly." misguided audience's attention due to the unnecessary anti-men part. A potentially nice gag ruined by bad writing? And yes, showing she actually still has to learn/grow, despite her words, seems fitting for the early episodes of a series. Compare Edward from the start of FMAB to Edward at the end of FMAB...
@@LegnaiaUnderground i think a big part of it is the irony of her saying “i’m better at controlling my anger than you!” after she had just complained about men assuming they know more about her own field than her. that’s why i had a hard time deciding how intentional it was
There is also the fact in that scene (She-hulk) she’s comparing her life problems with a survivor of physical/psychological abuse, illegal human experimentation and the U.S. foster care system. Comes off pretty bad for someone to complain about with fellow lawyers ‘mansplaining’ to them in comparison to a guy who saw his father kill his mother.
0:57 I think that's a photo of Romi Park, Edward's voice actress. AFAIK, she often appeared in public events in the place of Hiromu Arakawa, who doesn't want to show herself, and so Park photos ended up being erroneously attributed to Arakawa.
i prefer to use real faces of authors when i can but i've mistakenly used a wrong photo once before. so i guess i should stick to avatars for manga authors from now on to play it safe...
@blearoyd I have no idea why a voice actress should be shown apparently drawing comics like in that photo, though, so don't take this version as sure either! Maybe she's also a part-time/hobbyist mangaka?
Finally somebody talks about how underrated female characters in a great shonen even though they were well written in that said show and FMAB is one of those. List goes on: Gintama Claymore (manga) Hunter X Hunter
Should've mentioned that, in the case of Izumi, it is her husband who is her unwavering support. A complete reversal of the roles Mustang/Hawkeye and Ling/Lan Fan have.
One of the greatest strengths of FMA:BH was for me, that it knows when to friggn end. This sounds stupid, but the idea of the journey ending for real at a specific point is a main reason, why Ed feels like a great character. Because the story gives us closure on his adventure and leaves us statisfied with what he achieved. Also his journey at large was a great way to tell a story, where he relies on his allies, experiences failure and learns valuable lessons for life from it all. FMA just feels great because Ed is very human, despite the powers the world bestowed on him.
The only shonen where i felt fully satisfied watching female characters
What about Mei????
ehhh i didn't have as much to say about her. her alchahistry does come in handy a few times and if i remember correctly she helps decode scar's research notes. that's about it
Nezuko is a prime example of the sexy lamp test
The women may not get much (if any) fanservice directed towards them; but *the men* sure do! More often than not are they going shirtless for practically any reason. Yes, that includes Ed. Arakawa sure likes her muscles. Also, Riza and Olivier have been role models to me since high school.
Shoujo and more female-led subgenres give us fanservice with hot guys. But overall, I agree that anime in general has a problem with that balance. And hell yeah dude, great role models for your high-school self to pick.
Bro I recently read a comment about how the female characters despite being well-written never really interact outside of winry. And such most of them as you point out exist with respect to their "man". That had me messed up. Would love an opinion from you on this.
it's a valid critique but izumi and olivier do interact a bit near the very end. there's also paninya and riza's friend rebecca, though they're pretty minor characters. but yeah more intermingling would've been nice
another point i'll add: it is a bit unreasonable to request that all the characters interact at some point. that's very difficult to do while trying to tell a cohesive story. if you're bending the plot in order to force characters to meet up then you're doing your writing a disservice. and as said, arakawa does have all the characters indirectly meet up at the very end which i think is the most one can ask for.
@@blearoyd hmm, i see
I mean FMA'03 has the missing eps of FMAB
does it? i haven't actually read the manga in full so i'm not sure exactly how much of each is based on it
@@blearoyd Yes, FMAB is missing his trip and tricking of the corrupt Alchemist
Just as a note, if someone missunderstands Olivieres Section, her having a cold persona is a flaw, and thats good. Characters sould have some flaws, and her rater uncompromising perspective makes her a more rich charakter, even if she thinks, and acts not allways in a moraly correct way.
If you don’t mind indulging my curiosity, where are you from?
@SleightlyPersonal German speaking region.
@ Nice. I appreciate that. I was just asking because there was definitely logic behind your various spellings, including your use of K in character. (I’m American)
@SleightlyPersonal Yeah we use a fair amouth of k's.
@ Neat stuff.
Black Clover has some of the best female characters in anime.
Well I mean their alright…
Right at the start of the video you already said how people argue that "the series" (read: shounen) is targeted towards young boys. I always hated it when someone responds like that. Because it doesn't adress the critique at all and just handwaves it off as "who cares", as IF boys didn't want to see cool female characters as well. It always ticks me off, because the problem is acknowledged but actively ignored. FMA:BH is a great show, because I never thought the gender of the character had any impact on their role they had to fulfill. Everyone was presented being as capable as anyone else and it shows. Right from the start we always see woman being part of the army, woman being in traditionally male dominated jobs and no one takes an issue with that. FMA makes all the right choices with the type of characters they have. Like how Olivier is the "Girlboss" but pretty much "unloveable", because she is a pain to have around, but is also an asset to have as an ally. Riza is stoic to a fault, Lan Fan loyal to a fault and Izumi motherly to a fault. Everyone comes with a burden on their own and we see how each struggle with the way they navigate this world, which is why they feel human. A lot of Marvel represenations of strong female woman seemingly can't do wrong and that makes them inhuman to me. Just like male characters that are always correct, the best, the strongest or whatever are boring. We want struggling characters, because we can root for them to overcome said struggles and achive their own happiness in the process. It gives us a form of carthasis which we as viewers often simply enjoy. After watching your video, I think comparing you to the critical drinker would be an insult. There is much thought put into your arguments and you avoid making all about this thing political in any way, shape or form, because we are here to talk about a story, not assume why something is presented in one way or another. Sometimes it is hard to argue against certain female characters, because someone might come off like TCD by doing so, but lackluster female characters need to be adressed to get better characters in the process - just like male characters are also constantly targeted by critics alike. I just love great characters, no matter what gender they might have.
You might need to take another look at bleach cause thinking the soul society arc just falls into "damsel in distress" trope shows you didn't really get it.
Stopped watching when the little Chinese girl was begging to get groomed.
I love fan service, one of my favorite shows is Strike Witches. But I also love FMA, not every show needs to be sexy, it depends on the tone of the story. For example Code Geass goes great with having fan service, but it would be weird in Attack on Titan.
your takes on gender, sex, and roles in fma (and media in general) is much better than most youtubers or even people i've met in my life. i always favored fma for these reasons and you've put them all to words, so thank you very much for that :3
I love being fed FMA content in 2024. I would love to see other Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or even Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 essays as both anime still hold up to this day.
ive watched brotherhood maybe 15 ish times now and im still learning new things, its incredible
Read Demon Slayer for top tier female characters, every single one is peak, deep and nuanced
Are you joking? Demon Slayer has awfully written female characters. Aside from Tamayo and Shinobu, they are all very flat and one-note, only designed to please the male gaze. Nezuko is not even a character, she's a mascot with breasts
Lmao there’s nothing deep about that generic shonen Demon Slayer
Bro, why are you mentioning this on FMAB video? Demon Slayer is the example of how NOT to write female characters when it comes to a story, not only aren’t they that much prominent roles but some of them also *lack having healthy agency* to be actual characters, I’m aware that there are at least some decent female characters like Tengen’s wives, only Hinatsuru and Mario were the only ones that actually were strong but not Suma. Tamayo and Shinobu are also very *well-written female characters* since not only do they have actual agency they also have motivations and goals of their own and are also independent individuals that had nothing to do with men (tbh never enjoyed Yushiro simping for Tamayo every time I’ve seen him onscreen, at least she wasn’t interested in him in that way). Other than that the other female characters (Nezuko, Kanao, etc.) are only used as either plot devices or treated an *accessory* for male characters, and have no character development in the series. Nezuko, who is supposed to be the main female protagonist is instead made into a plot device to make Tanjiro’s character shine which isn’t bad but wish she was treated as an actual character instead of an object and also a love interest for Zenitsu. (Honestly, never enjoyed those two actually end up together romantically) Aoi is a girl who’s works as a nurse in the Butterfly Mansion and used to be trained as a demon slayer but because of her insecurity and cowardice, she didn’t become one and that’s fine not all characters have to be a combatant, being in a support role while still in the Corps is very remarkable, and at least she had a personality, was relatable and got to her at least a bit, but also was made as a love interest for the one of the main trio. Kanao is my most disliked character because of the way her character arc was written. Instead of having an arc about take time to heal from her trauma and learn how to feel and experience emotions so that she could’ve started to understand herself properly and start to grow as *her own person* Her actual arc/development is so heavily dependent on Tanjiro to *give her agency* and the small moments that are supposed to be her breaking out of her shell and others say that Tanjiro is supposed to be the catalyst to her “development” instead those are just moments of her starting to become so *dependent* on Tanjiro to give her agency. And for the rest of the series, she isn’t even utilized well and her development was offscreen after her introduction (Rehabilitation Training Arc) her character also never got the chance to shine and development also so spaced out of the story along with that her foils with her antagonist (Douma) are so shallow because all of Kanao’s character development was almost to nonexistent for like the rest of the story and her moments with Douma don’t have any enough exposure to her character leading up to those moments and even for the entire battle! Also her roasting Douma as much that was a cool moment for her, I’m going to say that was a *character flaw for Kanao* She doesn’t really contribute much in the final arcs as well, just gets one fight with the Upper Moons and doesn’t even participate with the final battle with Muzan and isn’t even shown until Tanjiro becomes a demon and she just saves him and that’s all it for her. Don’t get me wrong, Kanao had some decent moments in the final arc but the fact that we don’t get to her combat abilities until the story is almost halfway finished is just inconsistent writing, and while it was also amazing for her to sacrifice her eye to save Tanjiro, that moment of her “development” was also dependent onto Tanjiro *to giving her agency* and by the end she ends up as his future wife! And I despise it so much! Instead of Kanao receiving character development and being an actual character with healthy agency instead she’s just reduced to being a generic love interest with no agency and instead all of her “development/arc” is just dependent onto Tanjiro to give her agency to which she probably lacks and so desperate for his approval. Also Tanjiro falling for Kanao *felt so out of character for him* and their relationship is so underdeveloped, they had at least some chemistry but lacked having more chemistry, character interactions and development, instead the best thing to describe their relationship is just a dependent one. The reason why FMAB is so beloved is that because not only it has an amazing story, its female characters have actual depth to them and one of my favorites Winry is not just reduced to being a love interest for Ed, she has her own motivations, trauma, interest, goals, etc. and she has an *actual life outside of the Elric brothers* which is great writing! This makes Winry a strong independent female character. Also Winry’s relationship with Ed actually feels more *natural* instead of being forced because we get to see their history between these two characters and they both start to grow closer and help strengthen each other as individuals, this makes it more realistic. (you get what I mean) they support and understand each other so well that it makes their moments feel so special, they’re also aware that the one has feelings for the other. And once their romance has began then their relationship has already been developed. Saying that demon slayer’s female cast is “well-developed” is just not true, and I’ve already have my points, it may be a generic shonen but at least Tanjiro was at least seen to others a refreshing main character since he can get the job done, which is true which makes one of my favorites. :) But tbh FMAB takes the crown for well-written story and characters especially for Ed, love the scamp.
personally I feel the reputation then girls have in anime and manga as all accessories while not totally false is very much exaggerated to say the least. it really depends on the author doesn't it. naruto and yu-gi-oh just have a pile of wasted potential. dragon ball, one peace, bleach and fairy tail for all their flaws can you really say their girls are just eye-candy?
i do exaggerate at the start for the sake of a more entertaining intro but yes, "wasted potential" is a more accurate way of putting it
But FMA has fanservive characters, Alex armstrong, and probably olivia too . And Izumus husband is very bara too? She literally said she read a lot manga of and likes to draq older buff or hot dudes, which is her fanservice. I dont say its bad, but its fanservice.
I'd recommend Gintama if you want to see more well-written women in a shonen.
does Gintama count as a shonen? i guess it's similar to OPM in how it parodies the genre
Gintama was publicized in Shonen Jump, hence it’s a shonen series yeah
Are you certain that’s a photo of Hiromu Arakawa? There’s at least one photo of Ed’s *seiyuu* Romi Park, that is commonly mis-attributed as one of Arakawa; not unlike Eichiro Oda, she’s very private and modern footage of her tends to superimpose her Bespectacled Cow avatar over her face… Not being critical mate, just saying. That point aside, while Al is my favourite character in most versions of FMA (notably discounting the mess of FMA2003 and how it does him dirty…), I really appreciate how Ed is characterised throughout and where his character ends up by the end).
well, i hope so. there are a couple other photos that come up that appear to be the same person without mention of Romi Park
I disagree with you but this video was very rational and well made. The only thing I would say is saying that Zulu doesn't care about the disabled is unfair
@@Kalakakku_ i did get emotional during that section because i didn’t like the assumptions being made about people like Paul Alexander. but simply using AI for ideation isn’t something i’m against, just exploitation through for-profit models. in any case, i don’t think either of us can speak for the entirety of the disabled community just because we both know disabled people
FMAB Woman Hardwork to survive. Just like Hiromu Arakawa!
I disagree with the arguments made but +rep for being willing to debate Zulu on this!
Just right off the bat, I can tell you make the fallacy of equivocating law with morality when you clearly subscribe to the legal positivist view of law. That is, you aren't making a concrete moral argument other than "if it's legal it's good, if it's good it's legal" etc. You also repeatedly make a labour theory of value fallacy. Just because you worked hard that does not entitle you to the wealth and property of others, just because you are the first to discover something that does not give you an inherent right to restrict others from taking advantage of that discovery.
i've gotten the comment of "morality and legality are separate" a few times now so i have to ask: if someone verbally harasses someone else to the point of su*c*de (and there's evidence of this: texts, email, etc) who's responsible for that death, the harasser or the person who took their own life?
@@blearoyd You're missing the point here. The doctrine of legal positivism is the view that law is spoken ("posited") into existence and, as such, the law is whatever is proclaimed by whoever "created" the law, i.e. completely subjective and arbitrary. This view is opposite to that of natural law theory, the view that law is derived from ethical principles or other observations on human nature or the agency of moral beings. In that sense, law is not "created", but discovered through enquiry. There are more than one natural law theories though, the best known ones being the Thomist, Lockean, and Rothbardian theories of natural law. I'm not saying that law and ethics are separate to each other, my view is that law and ethics ought to be in alignment, and law that is not ethical is not law, properly speaking. In that sense, while I can make a claim to the effect of "it is illegal, therefore it's wrong", YOU cannot. What I am saying, however, is that since your view on law is positivist, then any attempt made by you to argue that something is wrong because it is illegal is not a proper ethical or moral claim, instead you should structure your argument around the ethical/moral PRINCIPLE that you think that law is derived from, otherwise any claims you make about the "goodness" or "badness" of something being illegal is invalid. And how is the chain of causality between communication and s---ide determined? If I called you a poopy butthead right now, and you decided to do **that** tomorrow, am I then liable for your demise?
@@connoisseurofcookies2047 as i express near the start of my video, the law is not static and is ever-changing. everything should be questioned. and as i said during the live call with zulu, i'm open to the idea of a copyright-free world, even though i'd have concerns. i still believe Fair Use to be a reasonable model to follow when attempting to profit off someone else's work in some form. i don't like exploitation whether it's towards artists, scientists or mathematicians. (and there's different degrees of harassment just as there's different degrees of murder)
The part about him claiming AI's learn the same humans do is kind of insane tbh. An AI has no rational soul. It can not find the universal in the particular. At least this is how I see it
The human intellect is geared torwards the aquisition of knowledge and learning language. AIs need a gazillion instances of something to be capable of emulating what a human can do after seeing 2-3 instances of that something.
