A Blast From The Past!!
This video shows you some leaded stained-glass windows I made almost 50 years ago!! They were recovered by my daughter from our home in Walnut, CA where we lived at the time they were made. These are some of my very first leaded glass projects. I had an old Fletcher glass cutter, 120 watt soldering iron my dad gave to me, a pair of grossing pliers, came knife and a hand full of horseshoes nails when I started.

    About to embark on a solar light and interetsted in how ❤you determine the ❤size of the ❤panel. I suspec❤t ❤th❤at done with a formulae I could use a set size for the strips of g❤lass (plus lead) like you mentioned in the video but I am not sure.. One of my solar lights is 5 " round. I think I will have to make the light with 4 sides - say 5 1/2 inches wide but how long is best? (thank God I am old and can remember feet and inches). I also have purchased a couple of smaller lights which i hope to make with 3 sides - include a 4" round solar panel . Really love your videos and following along with a project. Hi again Bill, Well, I can't explain just how nervous I have been to try this - It is my first leadlight project (in the past I have only used foil). The project went really well. I am thrilled with the outcome. My only surprise was that the weight of the lead made it difficult for the wind to blow the individual circles around - even though they spin easily if I give them a nudge. Again thank you for your great video and wonderful design

    How do you make the paper clip clamps

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 Месяц назад

      Hi Bill, Thanks for your question on the paper clip clamps. They are made using a standard 1 1/4" paper clip. In the center there is a lip that is bent over between where the metal finger livers are hooked to the paper clip. I just take a pair of flat noise pliers and bend it to a 90-degree angle and then I take a pair of long noise pliers and bend it on over to make small fingers on both sides of the paper clip. When you open the paper clip you can put these small fingers between the glass and the lead came to bring them together. I hope that makes sense to you!! If not send me another reply and I will try to give you a better answer. I have had several subscribers' ask about these clips, maybe I should do a short video on how to make them!! Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone

    Beautiful! I'm a beginner and really don't know alot about any of it. Right now I'm just doing copper foil. Do you think a copper foil spinner of this size would work? I'm afraid the wind might be too much for it. I appreciate your time.

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 2 месяца назад

      Hi Jeff, Yes, you can make this spinner with copper foil. There are several videos on RUclips with people making spinners with copper foil. I like using lead came only because I like the way it looks, and I find it to be easier to work with than copper foil. If I was to make one with copper foil, I would still go around the outer edges with my U came to finish off the project. That way I could still use my cotter pin hanger idea. If you do make one with the copper foil, putting the hanger onto it may be the weak link to your project. Let me know what you come up with and welcome to my channel. Please feel free to ask me anything about any of these video projects. If you have some time, check out my very first video, Leaded Glass Solar Lantern for Beginners, it talks all about everything you need to do leaded glass projects. • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 2 месяца назад

      Hi Tom, Thanks for your comment, yes you can make this with copper foil. I would run some re-strip down the long part of the cross to make it stronger and keep it from being prone to bending. The bevels are a little tricky to wrap in copper foil, take your time to get the copper foil centered on the edge. I would also wrap the outside edges with lead U Came for additional strength. I hope that helps you out. Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone

    Hi Bill, Thank you so much for your helpful videos. I have watched them over and over. Finally I have received my piano wire,brass tube and collars so am ready to start. All my efforts to date have been with copper foil so I am anxious to try lead. I was planning to start the vertical spinning lollypop but have decided on the Circle of colours. One question - I note that you don't show/talk about cementing the glass at the end of either of these two projects. Is this correct? I don't need to cement the glass into the lead or have I missed something? This is such a wonderful-looking spinner - Thanks for allowing everyone 9o use the pattern.

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 2 месяца назад

      Hi Peter, Thanks for your comment, no you didn't miss anything regarding using glazing putty in these small leaded glass projects. I don't use glazing putty in projects smaller than 1 1/2' square projects or any type of window panel that is going on the outside and needs to be waterproofed. If you want to glaze them it makes them stronger and if there are any pieces of glass that's a little small and are rattling back and forth in the lead channel the glazing putty will stop that. Best of luck on your project, take your time and I'm sure it will come out great!! Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone

    When you are cutting the pieces for the panels i.e. the 1x2, 3/4 x2 and 1/2 x2 are you allowing for the gap on your cutter?

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 2 месяца назад

      Hi Rayn, Thanks so much for your comment, I took a look at the video and around the 10:04 mark I address the problem of the glass and lead came making the project grow a little. This is one of my videos I call cut and stack, and I don't really care if it grows a little. The drawing at the start of the video shows you the minimum size of the panel, if it grows a little you don't care, you just don't want it to come out smaller because the solar light won't fit. You are right in asking about the amount it grows because of the cutter and the lead came. The U came adds about 1/16" to the panel on both sides and the H Came adds about1/32" each time you put it between the glass. This was my very first You Tube video and see where I left some things too chance, hopefully my newer ones have improved!! So, with that in mind if you wanted to make it exact all your glass would be cut using a ruler that is about 1/16" small than the finished cut size. Example a 1" piece of glass would use a 15/16" ruler plus the 1/16" the cutter would add to it to come out with a piece exactly 1" wide. I hope that makes sense to you!! Where you have to be really carful when cutting your glass is when it has to fit into something that is already made, like a window panel that needs to fit into a give space. All the projects in my channel don't have to fit into anything so if they grow a little it's fine. Hope that info was helpful and good luck on your projects. Please feel free to as me anything about these projects!! Have a great day. Regards, Bill Stone PS: They do make what they call pattern shears for both lead came and copper foil projects. These shears cut out a small strip from your pattern paper to allow for the lead came or copper foil.

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 3 месяца назад

      Hi Craig, I'm so sorry, but I don't have a pattern for any of these jigs used in my video projects. The one for this project is two 30-degree tringles put end to end forming the jig to hold the panels on a 30-degree angle when you solder them together. If you don't want to make this jig you can use your 30/60-degree tringle and block up the outer edges of your panels, making them come together to make the V grove in the center, to solder them together. I hope that makes sense to you. Thanks for your comment and please feel free to ask me anything about these projects. Let me know how you make out with your project. Have a great day!! Hi Evelyne, Thanks so much for your comment, Lacquer Thinner is used to thin Lacquer base paint. It is also used to clean parts and works great to get the edges of your class clean after grinding them to fit in your projects. I use it to clean the edges of my glass when doing copper foil projects, it helps the foil stick to the glass. It dries super-fast and is non oily. Hi Lila, Just take your time, make a good form to make it in. If you don't have any small wood for the form, pick up some wooden paint stirrers or an old fashion wooden yard stick and cut it down to the size you need. You can also pick up some clear window glass to practice cutting on, before you cut your good glass for the project. I'm sure you will get it worked out. Also, take some small pieces of you lead came and practice soldering before you solder your project. Let me know how you're coming along. If you have trouble send me a comment and I will see if I can help you out. Best of luck!! Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone

      Hi Lila, Thanks for your comment, this is a great project to get started with. I took a look at the video and found at the 30-minute mark we talk about the H Came. Here is the size of the U Came and H Came used on this project. U Came RU-70 face width 5/32" and channel width 3/16" H Came HR-9 face width 5/32" and channel width 3/16" Both of these Cames are made by Cascade Metals. Check out their web page and get a chart on all the different sizes of lead came. Any Came that is close to these sizes will work for you. I don't know where you're getting your supplies, either online or at a glass supply store, they should be able to help you out. If you're buying them online you can check out Amazon, Delphi Glass, E-Bay and Sun and Moon glass supplies for a starter. Another Came that works great is HR-8 face width 5/32" and channel width 5/32". Before you start your project, check out my video, Leaded Glass Solar Lantern for Beginners. It's my first video and shows you all the tools and how to use them. Best of luck on your project and please feel free to ask me anything about any of these projects. Let me know how you do!! Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone

    Going through some videos quickly I came upon yours and was very impressed with the results of the patina as compared to some people who are using a black goopy grout that gives a very uneven finish. Could you apply the Pantene with cotton balls so that you're not breathing it ? I have never worked with stained glass before I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos.

    • @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310
      @billstonesstainedglasscrea3310 3 месяца назад

      Hi Leas, Nice to hear from you again, the black goopy grout you see people using is to glaze the windows. It's called glazing putty. The Patina is a different product and is used to turn the lead black. You can use all types of things to put it on your projects. Cotton Balls work just fine. I use a tinning brush, like the one you use to put flux on the lead joints before you solder them. Always use gloves when putting on Patina. I have never been to concerned about breathing it. You're not right close to it when you're putting it on your project. If you're worried about you can set up a small fan or wear a mask when you are using it. I hope that helps you out. Thanks for your comment!! Regards, Bill Stone

      Hi Lisa, Sorry your having trouble finding the video you're looking for. I just logged in to my channel at Bill Stone's Stained Glass Creations and noticed it goes to my channel home page, but it doesn't show all 64 videos on the opening page. If you take a look just under my photo you will see a line that says Home, Videos, Shorts and more. If you click on the Videos, you will get all 64 videos up in one place, go all the way down to the bottom of the page and you will see the video you're looking for. It's the pink one. Let me know if that helps you out. Enjoy your day!! Regards, Bill Stone

    I somehow missed where you attach the loop to the glass. I'm assuming that you just welded it on. But what did you use to make that loop out of ? Okay now I backed up the video. The loop would be attached to the end I thought the loop would be attached at the end of the project ❤.

The music wire is 3/32"x36" and the brass tubing is 1/8"x36", both by K&S Precision Metals and the 3/32" collars are by DU-BRO. You can find these items on Amazon or at a hobby store that sells R/C Cars, Boats and Planes. Again, thanks for your tip on an item list, great idea!! Have a great day and thanks for your comment.
