Hi Again Brenda, Nice to hear from you, thanks for your comment and glad you are enjoying the video projects. It's never too late to start a new hobby!! If you are a hands-on person and a little mechanically incline you can do this. Start with something simple, like the project I made with my granddaughter, that was her first project ever!! She did a great job with it. Enjoy your day!! Regards, Bill Stone

Love it Bill. Question, I bought a small sheet of galvanized steel for the tabs on the bottom of the solar lanterns. It doesn't take the solder, I've used steel wool and tried rough sandpaper on it, help. I've used the leaf of 1/2" lead that i tinted for the tabs. You said galvanized tin is what you use, is there a difference?
Hi stranger, Nice to hear from you. Yes, I use the thin galvanized tin sheet to make the tabs to hold the bottoms in the solar lanterns. Sometimes it is hard to get it cleaned up enough to get it to take solder. I use an 80-grit emery board and really sand it down to bare metal, then flux it and solder it. Over the past I have also used a product made by K & S Precision Metals, it's a Brass Sheet .025" thick, 3/4" wide and 12" long to make these tabs. The Brass solders really good. You can find their products at Hobby Stores, Hobby Lobby and on Amazon. I just cut them off the end of the sheet at 1/2" or so that makes a tab 1/2"x 3/4" which is perfect size. I hope this is hopeful to you. How did you like this project? It's a fun one to make, give it a try when you have time. Have a great day. Regards, Bill Stone
Thanks. I've 5 patterns drawn out over the winter, just getting warm enough to work in the garage again. I like the birds, I'll look for something like that, Menards will have some cool stuff out. I'll check with the hobby lobby
Hi Again, Sounds like you're going to be busy this summer. The hummingbirds I used in this video are from Walmart, I'm making another video called Leaded Glass Hummingbird Solar Lantern 2.0, the hummingbirds in that one are from Amazon. Enjoy the rest of your day!! Regards, Bill Stone
Awww WoW !! This is so awesome Bill, Hello to yr lovely wife, thanks for helping so we can see better ❤ Bill did you get the hanging birds of Amazon, I'd love to try & make that it so so pretty . I have a question I'm not sure if I've asked before, yr offcuts of stained glass that you used can they be fired in a kiln to melt the edges or is that only possibly with fused glass sheets ? Thankyou guys Have the best day 😊
Love it Bill. I find creative ideas come to me at every turn. I have bought small sheet of galvanized steel for the tabs at bottom of the solar lanterns. However I'm not been able to get the solder to take to the steel. I've used steel wool, sand paper with no luck. I've used the crown of 1/2" flat lead tinned both sides for the tabs. I would like to solve the issue with the steel I have. You said you use galvanized tin?
@@julierickert2145 Julie I think you put yr comment in aussiemachandmadeeverything, not a direct comment to Bill, I would rewrite the question to Bill. I'm no expert but I think its because you used steel, solder doesn't seem to stick to steel, however you might be correct about Galvanised tin, if you try it the solder should stick them together 😊
Hi Mary Beth, YES!!! you need to stretch it to get it Stright and also help to strengthen it a little. If you're not sure how to do that check out my first video called Leaded Glass Solar Lantern for Beginners!!! it will show you all the tools and how to straight your Lead Came. Thanks for your comment, please feel free to ask me anything about these video projects, I will be more than happy to get you an answer. Have a great day!! Regards, Bill Stone
