I took a stained glass class at a local glass studio years ago. For $200 I got 4 hours of instructed studio time and learned how to cut, grind, and design glass. And if I messed up, which I did a lot, I remade pieces as needed. Having an actual teacher was crucial to me and I loved every minute of learning this skill!
What are your thoughts on the less toxic materials vs "the good stuff"? Do you think experience would make the "cheap" ones work better or is there truly a difference?

I'd love to see you guys do a cheap versus expensive crochet kit or knitting kit. I have a lot of friends who picked up the hobby during quarantimes and it seemed like there were some pretty vast differences in "beginner" kits across the board. Love your stuff!
One thing I’d like to add is that mosaics might even be a good starting point to see if you like working with glass before trying a project like this! You can use a wider variety of materials (tiles, broken glass, cut glass pieces, etc.) to make your design, and a variety of techniques to give the effect that you want! You can make see-through faux-stained glass mosaics in something like a picture frame or on a variety of surfaces if you want to make your art opaque. Though related, Mosaics are their own special art and would be cool to see you guys tackle in the future! You can get really creative with the designs! (Safety is number one, so make sure no matter what, when you’re working with glass, ceramic, chemical agents, machinery, or other tools - always be safe and use the necessary protective gear!)
I love this! My dad taught me how to do this when I was a teenager. Fell in love immediately! Helpful tip if you want to do it again, my dad would cut out the pieces of paper of the stenciled design and he’d spray glue them to the glass. They’d stay on while you cut them and even grind them and the paper washes right off with just water when you’re done grinding. Permanent marker works on the glass as well, but it sometimes washes off when grinding because of the fluids and your fingers wipe it off. All around love this and I hope you both continue creating more now that you got the hang of it. Can’t wait to see Jubee in her spacesuit. I know you can do it😉
@@LadyKatie13 you can find videos on RUclips to show you how. I was looking at that after figuring out that is what my stained glass teacher does for some of her patterns. It is so helpful because the vinyl stays on through the grinding process and unless you stretch it out when removing it from the glass you can still use it again.

yeah I was thinking break the glass a tiny bit oversized, then tape the laser-cut templates to them (with the old "two pieces of bluetape and superglue" trick). Definitely less chance of getting cut _when_ a piece goes flying. Might even be able to adjust the height of the glass grinder to use the upper part as a bearing like you see woodworkers do with flush-trim router bits. - - - Ah, never mind, I see at 23:10 that the upper part isn't flush with the grinder part 😒 But maybe you can get ones like that, or put some layers of tape on the upper part till it's flush, IDK...
As someone who's taken a few stained glass classes (still very much a beginner): Katelyn did SUCH a good job at this so quickly!! Especially with cutting glass, it's honestly much harder than it looks- you have to put a LOT of pressure into it while also keeping a very precise line. I'm sure having some previous crafting & making experience helps with some of the process, but still, she should feel proud! (Evan too, you both did great!!)
As a professional leadsmith (stained glass artist) You guys did a great job! Some note if you are interested... 1. The gaps in the pre-cut kit are fine and dont require reshaping. Glass does not have to fit together perfectly like a puzzle, as the lead fills in those gaps. 2. There is definitely a huge downside to going too slowly when soldering, and that is heat cracks! Going too slowly or going over warm spots too many times can and most-likely will result in your glass cracking. 3. In the future, after tacking the joints, you should "tin" the solder lines by applying a quick and thin line of solder, then go back and make your solder beads; Especially on the edges, as it makes application a lot easier there. Well done!
Man this takes me back. My Mom taught me to make stained glass projects when I was a kid. It was a fun thing we did together. We both moved on to other types of projects but it made me really happy to see you enjoyed it 😆. Feels super nostalgic 😆❤.

Fun video! I agree with Even about finding a local artist who has the materials. There are lots of artisans who have studio hours or classes where they let you use their tools and materials for the cost of the glass and studio time.
Soldering usually works best when you use soldering iron to heat the surface you wish to solder and then touching that surface with the solder. Hot surface "absorbs" the solder. Cold surface puts solder back into solid state, which makes it not stick. Touching solder to soldering iron tip results in solder being absorbed by soldering iron tip, which is why it's better to apply solder straight to the heated surface rather than the soldering iron tip. You definitely don't want to use soldering iron like a paint brush like Evan did.
you can kinda get away with painting but it requires like, paste flux and a temp controlled iron or the joints look cold af lol. like once the copper is tinned the heat transfer is way easier, and you need a lot of flux to get that base tinning layer.
The painting method is actually quite commonly used when soldering SMD chip packages, a bit of solder on the tip, paint over all the pins, a bit of touchup and its usually perfect.
It usually works a little different with stained glass. Brushing the foil with flux, then putting solder on the tip then applying it is how I and most other stained glass artists I know were taught. I'm sure there is other ways other stained glass artists use, but this method is very common.
They used proper technique for stained glass. It is not a "heat sink" situation like soldering metal together. You will crack the glass applying heat to it. The less contact between the iron and the surface, the better. The iron is to melt and spread the solder, NOT to heat up the glass.
As someone who just tried stained glass for the first time. I can attest to how repetitive the steps can be. I did three identical transom window inserts 2 foot by 2 foot each with 53 pieces perhaps a little ambitious idk. But all in all I did find the process very fun from designing the pattern and picking out the glass to the final assembly. Seeing them in the breakfast space every day brings a smile to my face. 10/10 would recommend. P.s E&K love to see you guys continually trying new crafts always great content. Would love to see you guys try your hands at aluminum casting or other metal sculpture techniques I think you would like the freedom, but I doubt there's cheap vs expensive kits for something like that.
Recommendation for a future stained glass project. For cutting out pieces we print out the design and use special scissors designed for taking a strip down the middle. Then using a glue stick to attach it to the glass. The paper will often stay on the glass until after the grinding process to make sure you have the correct shape.
The first time I did stained glass I was SO discouraged because it just was not working at all. Then I realized that the solder I bought was the issue. What a confidence boost when you realize it's the materials and NOT YOU!
Back in my sophomore year in high school I took a “pottery and crafts” class and one of our lessons/projects was making a stained glass project completely from scratch and it was honestly one of my favorite art related things I’ve ever done. The whole process was just awesome and the pieces always came out looking adorable
As a stained glass artist, the bead (the domed line of solder bonded to the copper foil) does give the piece stability. If you only "tin" (just a thin coat of solder over the copper foil) the copper foil without creating a nice, even bead, the more likely the piece will fold or sag over time. The glass is fighting gravity, and just tinning the connections means the glue on the tape is doing more work to hold the glass together. A proper solder bead, the domed structure of the solder is architecturally distributing the weight of the glass.

Had to make sure I watched. A couple months ago I was in Michaels.... They at the time had 3 kits, ALL ON CLEARANCE!!!! I paid $10 each. I already had all the other items needed at home. Now that I've watched ya'all I'm going to try mine. I washed my pieces and that was about it. Growing up I had an uncle that had a whole studio in his basement. Thanks for sharing, love video as always. Katelyn excellent design.
I've been working with stained glass for about 30 years now, and I think both of you did a great job, especially for beginners. If you ever need any advice or tips on stained glass, I would be happy to help in any way I can.
@@blaah9999 You could use a push block with a rubber gripper pad or gloves. I generally don't use gloves or anything to have more control of the glass on the grinder. As long as you aren't pushing the glass along the edge, you should be fine. Even if you are pushing along the edge, as long as the glass broke properly with a 90 degree angle to the face it shouldn't be terribly sharp. Of course, I have permanently altered my fingerprints from all the cuts I've gotten from glass, and the calluses I have developed make it more difficult to cut my fingers now. I strongly recommend eye protection at all times when working with glass, because little slivers will do attempt to attack your eyes.
I’m so happy they did this. I took a stained glass class this year and my final project was a dragon mosaic over 200 pieces. It really does take a long time but it’s very worth it

If you already have a Dremel tool, a carbide burr cutter *will* grind glass very handily. But I would purchase cut-resistant gloves when handling the glass pieces. But that'll save a lot of $$. Also, I would flux the copper foil between the pieces-- flux each piece as you finish putting the copper on, it won't dry out before you solder, but that lets the solder wick down between the pieces. Further, smaller diameter solder helps too. All in all, a nice how-to video.
As someone that does stained glass, the copper tape is not what holds things together, it is the solder. The tape allows the solder to form the channels that hold the glass. That's one of the reasons why you want a thicker bead of solder, because the solder is making a frame that is holding the glass. You guys did a GREAT job!

It is one of the best hobbies I have ever picked up. It is very time consuming especially when it gets into the bigger projects but then after all of it comes together. You get to take that first step back after hanging it in the sun and think to yourself "I made that"
Seeing you score and cut the glass reminded me of watching my mom make mosaics while I was growing up, you guys should try your hand at that! I remember helping her grout and clean the pieces off, it's so satisfying to wipe the top layer of grout away/excavate the art and seeing the piece come to life!
What a treat to stumble across your video today! I've been a professional artist (painter) for most of my life, but I'm also a stained glass artist (for my own 'old house' fun). Now I don't know if you're putting us on playing the novice, because for your "kitty" you've cut the glass with the flow in a way that compliments the design drawing. Either way, well done! One thing I'd add, that for anyone thinking of taking up stained glass, the tools aren't your greatest expense; once you have them, you'll have them for years (and one can buy a grinder used). The biggest ongoing cost will be the glass. By the way, is that not a DeWalt 734 planer I saw under your table?? I have a DW735 I've used to make doors. Definitely not the tool a amateur would have =)
I feel like for the glass direction, it's just a result of her graphic design and art history, and knowing that any ingrained texture will end up mattering.
I knew Katelyn was going to be good at soldering because it's one of those precision things and she tends to be good at those things. I also know because I am the same way and I also lost track of time the first time I soldered and I did the most intricate work of making a bug that transmitted sound via a radio frequency (this was some 90s Radio Shack kit). My parents wanted me to try something that didn't require as much precise soldering for my first time but I insisted so they got me that kit. It turned out great and I spied on my brother. lol
On a side note, it's pretty boring to spy on most people because most people just do regular things like anyone else. My advice is not to waste your time spying unless not doing so would be even more boring.
I actually saw that exact cheap kit at Michael's last weekend in the clearance section, but was worried about the quality. I've always wanted to do stained glass so super appreciate this video!
for soldering: heat up the parts you want to connect with the iron, then add the solder. it should melt upon coming into contact with the copper in this case and spread out evenly. it doesn even necessarily have to touch the iron itself. at least thats how it works for electronics. it might be a bit harder with these relatively big bands of copper
Love that you two always go above and beyond and add in touches to make things come out as good as they possibly can for the videos. You do a great job at doing this I feel I could never do this but may give a try after this.
This was such a cool video to watch. My uncle makes a lot of stained glass items including custom made stained glass lamps tor every relative when they get married. There is a paint called Gallery Glass that looks like acrylic paint, but once dry it becomes transparent and looks like stained glass. I have often use it and would recommend it.
I freaking love soldering, but I also love caulking, so 🤷🏼♀️ You can’t sand solder, but you can ABSOLUTELY remove it! There are multiple options, including solder suckers and using a very thin mesh to attract it away!
Other stained glass artists in the comments have said that you have to be careful not to heat the glass too much (otherwise it might crack), so I wonder if using the solder removing options could be a little harder? For the mesh one especially, it definitely works best when the surface itself is heated (if you’re trying to remove all the solder). As an electrical engineer though solder removers have saved my life so many times lol. I can’t imagine assembling PCBs if I only had one chance to get it right.
As I was literally typing the comment about having a fume extractor, you pulled one out. Perfect! On the soldering, you typically don’t want to touch the solder to the iron. It will flow better if you heat the metal foil until it is hot enough to melt the solder. Otherwise you’re getting a cold solder joint which will be bulkier and more prone to flaking off. Loved the video.

I'm excited to see this video. I'd love to get into making stained glass but not ready to make the full investment of everything. I'm ADHD and I always get really gung-ho about purchasing all the things I need for a craft and then absolutely never end up doing it haha. I'll be looking for a middle ground. Maybe I'll use the kit to learn how to do it and then I would like something kind of in the middle so I have more flexibility on what projects I can make versus this very specific thing that the kit is telling you to do. I recently started doing stained glass! I’m only on my second piece, but I’m lucky to know someone who has a whole backyard studio dedicated to stained glass. She lets us come and work on whatever we want and teaches us how to do stuff. It’s awesome!
I love when this happens. I started playing with stained glass just a few months ago, because of one of those Make Market kits. IMO it's far more technical than it is artistic, and each step is as important as every other step. Even how you arrange your pattern when scoring the glass can make things easier or harder for you later on. It's still super satisfying though. Would recommend, although the Make Market kit is kind of terrible. But, as far as I'm aware, no one else is making beginner kits, so it;s terrible, and the best, at the same time.
This was so much fun to watch. I've been doing stained glass for about a year now and love it. For me it's the perfect ix of art + making things with tools + doesn't require a huge workshop. It's just so satisfying.
I learned stained glass from in person classes and I can not picture learning the tips and tricks in this context haha but its looking great! Only.... mildly... frustrating :) But still very fun!!!
I love soldering!! I honestly had no idea what soldering was this time last year, but since my job revolves around soldering and they've taught me everything I need to know for electronic components and structural integrity. I'm so happy that I got to learn this skill and had multiple different experiences to learn how to solder. I've never used tallow or non lead solder, but it does not look that bad. Might be worth learning how to make stained glass art and other projects for my free time.

Regarding the soldering. The reason it's so slippery and blobby is because it has really high surface tension. The solder will want to adhere to materials but only if the material is hot enough. When you were dragging the iron across the copper you may not have been giving the copper enough time to come up to temperature. This will cause the solder to stick to itself more than the material. If you do not heat the material up to the proper temperature you will end up with what's called a cold joint and it will crack off. This is because the solder has not actually become bound to the metal, it is just blobbing up on the surface of the metal and making small pin points of contact. Using a cheap soldering iron will require more time to get your material up to the proper temperature. I do mostly surface mount component soldering but these are a couple tips I think would help you get better results on your next project. The purpose of Flux is to remove oxygen from the situation and allow for a more proper connection between your solder and your material. If you are ever having problems getting the solder to stick, chances are you just need to add some more flux ;P btw, get legit Amtech Flux and you'll never go to another brand. Had no idea you could use tallow as flux but I see now why I never knew that fact lolol. @@LadyKatie13 you can find videos on RUclips to show you how. I was looking at that after figuring out that is what my stained glass teacher does for some of her patterns. It is so helpful because the vinyl stays on through the grinding process and unless you stretch it out when removing it from the glass you can still use it again.

yeah I was thinking break the glass a tiny bit oversized, then tape the laser-cut templates to them (with the old "two pieces of bluetape and superglue" trick). Definitely less chance of getting cut _when_ a piece goes flying.
Might even be able to adjust the height of the glass grinder to use the upper part as a bearing like you see woodworkers do with flush-trim router bits. - - - Ah, never mind, I see at 23:10 that the upper part isn't flush with the grinder part 😒 But maybe you can get ones like that, or put some layers of tape on the upper part till it's flush, IDK...

As someone who's taken a few stained glass classes (still very much a beginner): Katelyn did SUCH a good job at this so quickly!! Especially with cutting glass, it's honestly much harder than it looks- you have to put a LOT of pressure into it while also keeping a very precise line. I'm sure having some previous crafting & making experience helps with some of the process, but still, she should feel proud! (Evan too, you both did great!!)

Some note if you are interested...
1. The gaps in the pre-cut kit are fine and dont require reshaping. Glass does not have to fit together perfectly like a puzzle, as the lead fills in those gaps.
2. There is definitely a huge downside to going too slowly when soldering, and that is heat cracks! Going too slowly or going over warm spots too many times can and most-likely will result in your glass cracking.
3. In the future, after tacking the joints, you should "tin" the solder lines by applying a quick and thin line of solder, then go back and make your solder beads; Especially on the edges, as it makes application a lot easier there.

Fun video! I agree with Even about finding a local artist who has the materials. There are lots of artisans who have studio hours or classes where they let you use their tools and materials for the cost of the glass and studio time.
Soldering usually works best when you use soldering iron to heat the surface you wish to solder and then touching that surface with the solder. Hot surface "absorbs" the solder. Cold surface puts solder back into solid state, which makes it not stick. Touching solder to soldering iron tip results in solder being absorbed by soldering iron tip, which is why it's better to apply solder straight to the heated surface rather than the soldering iron tip.
You definitely don't want to use soldering iron like a paint brush like Evan did.
As someone who loves soldering this was a bit frustrating, but fun nonetheless.
you can kinda get away with painting but it requires like, paste flux and a temp controlled iron or the joints look cold af lol. like once the copper is tinned the heat transfer is way easier, and you need a lot of flux to get that base tinning layer.
The painting method is actually quite commonly used when soldering SMD chip packages, a bit of solder on the tip, paint over all the pins, a bit of touchup and its usually perfect.
It usually works a little different with stained glass. Brushing the foil with flux, then putting solder on the tip then applying it is how I and most other stained glass artists I know were taught. I'm sure there is other ways other stained glass artists use, but this method is very common.
They used proper technique for stained glass. It is not a "heat sink" situation like soldering metal together. You will crack the glass applying heat to it. The less contact between the iron and the surface, the better. The iron is to melt and spread the solder, NOT to heat up the glass.
As someone who just tried stained glass for the first time. I can attest to how repetitive the steps can be. I did three identical transom window inserts 2 foot by 2 foot each with 53 pieces perhaps a little ambitious idk. But all in all I did find the process very fun from designing the pattern and picking out the glass to the final assembly. Seeing them in the breakfast space every day brings a smile to my face. 10/10 would recommend. P.s E&K love to see you guys continually trying new crafts always great content. Would love to see you guys try your hands at aluminum casting or other metal sculpture techniques I think you would like the freedom, but I doubt there's cheap vs expensive kits for something like that.
Recommendation for a future stained glass project. For cutting out pieces we print out the design and use special scissors designed for taking a strip down the middle. Then using a glue stick to attach it to the glass. The paper will often stay on the glass until after the grinding process to make sure you have the correct shape.
The first time I did stained glass I was SO discouraged because it just was not working at all. Then I realized that the solder I bought was the issue. What a confidence boost when you realize it's the materials and NOT YOU!

Back in my sophomore year in high school I took a “pottery and crafts” class and one of our lessons/projects was making a stained glass project completely from scratch and it was honestly one of my favorite art related things I’ve ever done. The whole process was just awesome and the pieces always came out looking adorable
As a stained glass artist, the bead (the domed line of solder bonded to the copper foil) does give the piece stability. If you only "tin" (just a thin coat of solder over the copper foil) the copper foil without creating a nice, even bead, the more likely the piece will fold or sag over time. The glass is fighting gravity, and just tinning the connections means the glue on the tape is doing more work to hold the glass together. A proper solder bead, the domed structure of the solder is architecturally distributing the weight of the glass.

Had to make sure I watched. A couple months ago I was in Michaels.... They at the time had 3 kits, ALL ON CLEARANCE!!!! I paid $10 each. I already had all the other items needed at home. Now that I've watched ya'all I'm going to try mine. I washed my pieces and that was about it. Growing up I had an uncle that had a whole studio in his basement. Is it normal to not use gloves or something for your finger tips while using that grinder? I was so anxious watching that. 🫣
@@blaah9999 You could use a push block with a rubber gripper pad or gloves. I generally don't use gloves or anything to have more control of the glass on the grinder. As long as you aren't pushing the glass along the edge, you should be fine. Even if you are pushing along the edge, as long as the glass broke properly with a 90 degree angle to the face it shouldn't be terribly sharp. Of course, I have permanently altered my fingerprints from all the cuts I've gotten from glass, and the calluses I have developed make it more difficult to cut my fingers now. I strongly recommend eye protection at all times when working with glass, because little slivers will do attempt to attack your eyes.
I’m so happy they did this. I took a stained glass class this year and my final project was a dragon mosaic over 200 pieces. It really does take a long time but it’s very worth it

If you already have a Dremel tool, a carbide burr cutter *will* grind glass very handily. But I would purchase cut-resistant gloves when handling the glass pieces. But that'll save a lot of $$. Also, I would flux the copper foil between the pieces-- flux each piece as you finish putting the copper on, it won't dry out before you solder, but that lets the solder wick down between the pieces. Further, smaller diameter solder helps too. All in all, a nice how-to video.
As someone that does stained glass, the copper tape is not what holds things together, it is the solder. The tape allows the solder to form the channels that hold the glass. That's one of the reasons why you want a thicker bead of solder, because the solder is making a frame that is holding the glass. You guys did a GREAT job!

It is one of the best hobbies I have ever picked up. It is very time consuming especially when it gets into the bigger projects but then after all of it comes together. You get to take that first step back after hanging it in the sun and think to yourself "I made that"

I remember helping her grout and clean the pieces off, it's so satisfying to wipe the top layer of grout away/excavate the art and seeing the piece come to life!

What a treat to stumble across your video today! I've been a professional artist (painter) for most of my life, but I'm also a stained glass artist (for my own 'old house' fun). Now I don't know if you're putting us on playing the novice, because for your "kitty" you've cut the glass with the flow in a way that compliments the design drawing. Either way, well done! One thing I'd add, that for anyone thinking of taking up stained glass, the tools aren't your greatest expense; once you have them, you'll have them for years (and one can buy a grinder used). The biggest ongoing cost will be the glass. By the way, is that not a DeWalt 734 planer I saw under your table?? I have a DW735 I've used to make doors. Definitely not the tool a amateur would have =)
I feel like for the glass direction, it's just a result of her graphic design and art history, and knowing that any ingrained texture will end up mattering.
This is definitely their first go at stained glass. They're used to other materials and DIY which makes it easier to learn a new artform, I guess. :)

I knew Katelyn was going to be good at soldering because it's one of those precision things and she tends to be good at those things. I also know because I am the same way and I also lost track of time the first time I soldered and I did the most intricate work of making a bug that transmitted sound via a radio frequency (this was some 90s Radio Shack kit). My parents wanted me to try something that didn't require as much precise soldering for my first time but I insisted so they got me that kit. It turned out great and I spied on my brother. lol
On a side note, it's pretty boring to spy on most people because most people just do regular things like anyone else. My advice is not to waste your time spying unless not doing so would be even more boring.

Amazon has "mini diamond files" that work amazing with the obsidian I use so using them on glass would be insanely efficient!

for soldering: heat up the parts you want to connect with the iron, then add the solder. it should melt upon coming into contact with the copper in this case and spread out evenly. it doesn even necessarily have to touch the iron itself. at least thats how it works for electronics. it might be a bit harder with these relatively big bands of copper
Love that you two always go above and beyond and add in touches to make things come out as good as they possibly can for the videos. You do a great job at doing this I feel I could never do this but may give a try after this.

There is a paint called Gallery Glass that looks like acrylic paint, but once dry it becomes transparent and looks like stained glass. I have often use it and would recommend it.

I freaking love soldering, but I also love caulking, so 🤷🏼♀️ You can’t sand solder, but you can ABSOLUTELY remove it! There are multiple options, including solder suckers and using a very thin mesh to attract it away!
Other stained glass artists in the comments have said that you have to be careful not to heat the glass too much (otherwise it might crack), so I wonder if using the solder removing options could be a little harder? For the mesh one especially, it definitely works best when the surface itself is heated (if you’re trying to remove all the solder). As an electrical engineer though solder removers have saved my life so many times lol. I can’t imagine assembling PCBs if I only had one chance to get it right.

As I was literally typing the comment about having a fume extractor, you pulled one out. Perfect! On the soldering, you typically don’t want to touch the solder to the iron. It will flow better if you heat the metal foil until it is hot enough to melt the solder. Otherwise you’re getting a cold solder joint which will be bulkier and more prone to flaking off. Loved the video.

I'm excited to see this video. I'd love to get into making stained glass but not ready to make the full investment of everything. I'm ADHD and I always get really gung-ho about purchasing all the things I need for a craft and then absolutely never end up doing it haha. I'll be looking for a middle ground. Maybe I'll use the kit to learn how to do it and then I would like something kind of in the middle so I have more flexibility on what projects I can make versus this very specific thing that the kit is telling you to do. I recently started doing stained glass! I’m only on my second piece, but I’m lucky to know someone who has a whole backyard studio dedicated to stained glass. She lets us come and work on whatever we want and teaches us how to do stuff. It’s awesome!
I love when this happens. I started playing with stained glass just a few months ago, because of one of those Make Market kits. IMO it's far more technical than it is artistic, and each step is as important as every other step. Even how you arrange your pattern when scoring the glass can make things easier or harder for you later on. It's still super satisfying though. Would recommend, although the Make Market kit is kind of terrible. But, as far as I'm aware, no one else is making beginner kits, so it;s terrible, and the best, at the same time.
This was so much fun to watch. I've been doing stained glass for about a year now and love it. For me it's the perfect ix of art + making things with tools + doesn't require a huge workshop. It's just so satisfying.
I learned stained glass from in person classes and I can not picture learning the tips and tricks in this context haha but its looking great! Only.... mildly... frustrating :) But still very fun!!!

I honestly had no idea what soldering was this time last year, but since my job revolves around soldering and they've taught me everything I need to know for electronic components and structural integrity. I'm so happy that I got to learn this skill and had multiple different experiences to learn how to solder.
I've never used tallow or non lead solder, but it does not look that bad. Might be worth learning how to make stained glass art and other projects for my free time.

Regarding the soldering. The reason it's so slippery and blobby is because it has really high surface tension. The solder will want to adhere to materials but only if the material is hot enough. When you were dragging the iron across the copper you may not have been giving the copper enough time to come up to temperature. This will cause the solder to stick to itself more than the material. If you do not heat the material up to the proper temperature you will end up with what's called a cold joint and it will crack off. This is because the solder has not actually become bound to the metal, it is just blobbing up on the surface of the metal and making small pin points of contact. Using a cheap soldering iron will require more time to get your material up to the proper temperature. I do mostly surface mount component soldering but these are a couple tips I think would help you get better results on your next project. The purpose of Flux is to remove oxygen from the situation and allow for a more proper connection between your solder and your material. If you are ever having problems getting the solder to stick, chances are you just need to add some more flux ;P btw, get legit Amtech Flux and you'll never go to another brand. Had no idea you could use tallow as flux but I see now why I never knew that fact lolol.

You can actually use solder with silver in it instead of lead. It works almost as good and is way less harmful!

I just started a stained glass class and I'm going tomorrow to pick out all my glass for my project. I have had 2 classes so far and I plotted my design on a pattern already. I'm stoked. If I get through this class loving it, I'm gonna get a big kit, lol.
