    I have a 325ti as a trackday project, and it's pure driving pleasure. The m54 is really smooth, and the car handles really well on high speed corners, with old stock shock absorbers. Next upgrade will be some good coilovers. Maybe one day I should swap the b30, and maybe before they become too expensive. The e46 is fantastic because you can use it for many purposes, from using it as a daily and travelling comfortable on highways to trackday/drift project car.

    Sports car is such a misused term. People so often refer to sports coupes (like this E46) and GTs as “sports cars”, when really a sports car is almost always a RWD two-seater.

    I have a '02 330xi Touring since a bit over 3 years now and I adore it. You got the point across really well about these cars, they're not sportscars, they're built for cruising around and traveling, and the E46 is really good at this. As long as you're not only driving these cars on short distances, the fuel consumption is really fair, I can get mine down to 8 litres/100 km on highways and on longer drives, although the average sits around 10-11 litres for me. Pretty much the perfect car if you're looking for something comfortable with really nice design and ergonomics.

    I think the best upgrade you can do is the OG M2, either manual or dct, depends on what you prefer. It's the only car that retains some of the driving experience the e46 offers. And I'm emphasizing on the OG M2 because of the sound of the N55 engine. Let's be real the s55 is nice but sounds shit, and you don't need the extra 40hp to have fun, 370 is more than enough.

    • @OGBemfa
      @OGBemfa 22 часа назад

      That would be a good upgrade, but I feel like an M140i/M240i with an LSD would be a better choice than an OG M2, since they're about €10k cheaper and ultimately have a better B58 engine. The only M2 I would consider buying is the Competition. It feels worth the extra cost. Now, don't get me wrong, if I could get one for the price of an M140i/M240i, I’d definitely take the OG M2, haha.

    Brilliant. I get tired of seeing on Reddit, so many people treating the E46 like it’s some amazing sports car that happens to have 4 doors and space for people. Its not. It’s the opposite. A nice, solid family car that drives nicely, especially when you compare it to its rivals.

    Put on a purple tag steering rack, bilstein or koni sport shock absorbers, eibach antiroll bars and it will be a true sports cars

    • @OGBemfa
      @OGBemfa День назад

      This car has a yellow tag steering rack, which is essentially the same as the purple tag rack. It also came on US ZHP models, which is considered an upgrade. So, it already has the best possible steering rack for the E46. Upgrading the dampers would improve handling, as the stock ones don’t pair well with the Eibach lowering springs I currently have. Anti roll bars would also be a very good upgrade. But even with those changes, the car wouldn't quite have that true sports car feel. To get there, you’d need to go all in: intake, exhaust, ECU tune, poly engine and trans bushings, poly subframe and control arm bushings, and of course, an LSD. At that point, it’d feel much closer to a proper sports car. But let’s be real, that’s a lot of mods, and they’d make the car way less comfortable for daily driving. You’d end up with a project car that’s more work than fun to drive every day. That’s why I’ve got my E30 for that kind of stuff haha.

      Schmiedmann adjustable short shifter. But I can’t adjust it the way I want because the shifter hits the driveshaft if I make the throws any shorter. ROGUE Engineering makes excellent short shifter kits for this car, as they raise the pivot point, preventing the shifter from hitting the driveshaft.

      Unfortunately, it's not an original M-Sport package car. The kit was added later, but they didn’t change the seats. Almost everything else was updated, though. @OGBemfa You will like it.. Some say e82 drives like e36.. It has low weight and is pretty agile with short wheelbase especially on mountain roades .. I drive one by myself.

    Do you regularly drive more modern cars ? Like an F series BMW ? Because I dailied an e46, even less sporty model, and saying the e46 feels disconnected and like everything is connected through a layer of rubber seem pretty funny to hear when the e46 is known for good driver feedback (although it is filtered to some extent, much more than an e36 for example, which I also own) and feels like a fucking racecar levels of directness compared to driving a modern equivalent. (I now drive an f22 coupe) To me it just seems like driving tin can e30's made you feel like the e46 is a rolls royce lmao. I mean it's definitely not a sports car and is definitely a filtered car, but the extent to which you were saying it is, is kind of exagerated IMO. They still have stiffer steering than any modern car, with a feel for the road through the wheel, feeling and following road imperfections, and while they're not responsive the balance of the car even when you try to upset it feels godly.

      I’m really glad you brought that up! It’s true, I don’t drive modern cars much, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t driven them, haha. I totally understand that cars made after 2010 often feel more like video games. That’s one of the reasons I believe the E46 is one of the best BMWs ever made. It’s also true that driving my E30 made the E46 feel like a Rolls-Royce, like I said in the video, almost like a spaceship, haha. This is part of why I feel I have a unique perspective on the E46, since I drive these older BMWs a lot. That gives me a more real-world experience with these cars, and I’m not trying to put the E46 on a pedestal like many other RUclipsrs do. My goal is to offer a genuine insight into what it’s really like to drive this car. That being said, I didn’t mean to suggest the E46 feels disconnected. What I said is that every input feels like there’s a rubber piece in between, but that’s actually a good thing. It responds to everything you ask of it, but with a softer, more relaxed feel, not disconnected at all! What I was pointing out is that it’s not a sports car, which I think you’d agree with. But that doesn’t mean the driving feedback isn’t solid. The E46 has excellent steering feedback, though it’s not as sharp as what you’d find in a sports car or even in most modern cars. Also, I’ve noticed lately that people tend to buy these cars as "weekend getaway cars," almost treating them like oldtimers. They rave about the driving experience, but honestly, if that’s what you’re after, I’d recommend getting like an E30 or Z3 or something like that, if you're into BMWs, or even something sportier and older. The E46 just isn’t the car I’d personally choose for fun weekend drives. If I were going down that road, I’d rather get something like a Ferrari F355 haha (obviously not in the same price range lmao, but you get the point). And no, the E46 doesn’t have racecar-level directness, haha. Modern BMWs, for example, have much better turn-in and grip, but the feedback isn’t quite the same. What I was trying to get across in the video is that while the E46 isn’t a sports car, it’s still an excellent driver’s car. It’s mature, refined, and still a lot of fun to drive, and that’s the key point I wanted to highlight. But thanks for the feedback. That means I didn’t make the video clear enough, and I’ll definitely work on improving my message delivery next time. This was my first time doing anything like this, so I really appreciate your input.

      @@OGBemfa "And no, the E46 doesn’t have racecar-level directness, haha." I didn't say it did, it clearly doesn't, I just said for people used to modern cars with electric racks, when they drive an e46 it seems that way, seems like you've missed the whole point of my comment (T_T) Also saying for a weekend car you'd rather get an F355 ?!?? As if there was any relation between those ? As if anyone ever had the choice between both and hesitated ? Why bring it up they're not even in the same realm lmao Our perception is 100% based on what we daily/drive the most. Used to daily the e46, felt normal, refined, very supple, quiet, smooth, etc. Would lend it out to my dad who drives a modern Audi and he would always say how the steering is stiff and direct (which in the grand scheme of things, it is not, but in comparison it is), I would drive his audi and it felt like a computer steering wheel with the force feedback turned to 0%. I then got my F22 as a daily, at first it also felt like you couldn't feel anything from the car (more so than the audi, still a bmw lol), was very weird to me. I got used to it (an now weirdly it feels like I can feel the car way more, as if my senses are amplified to feel the dialed down feedback), and I drove the e46 again and it felt so rough and old school, 100 times worse than what I remembered it to be. Reality hasn't changed tho, but perception has, what I'm saying is you're biased because you drove an e30 for a while (and yes I'm sure you've driven modern cars but until it's your main car and you drive thousands of km on it, it doesn't become your new normal if that makes sense.) so the e46 to you seems more refined and supple than it is. I mean my best friend has an e30, and I know if I drove that for a while even totally normal and average cars would feel refined and modern in comparison, they're very rustic, light and alive cars. While most people getting e46's as fun cars are biased into thinking they're more sporty than they are because their perception is based around the most likely very modern daily car they have. But my point is if you split it down the middle to be objective, neither are right. It's not super sporty, but it's also not THAT refined, quiet and comfortable. I don't think anyone that is unbiased gets into an e46 and as soon as they drive it say it's a super calm car with an engine you can barely hear and feel as if it was meant to be driven chauffeur-like. Unbiased reality is that it's a car that tries to compromise between being comfortable and being able to perform, and all that with 20yo tech, so the compromises each way are felt. Not incredibly comfortable or disconnected because they wanted to make it a drivers car after all (you know the whole freude am fahren thing), not incredibly responsive or direct because they wanted to give it nice road manners and long distance ease, and after all it was a car meant for middle class dads, salesmens, etc. It's very much average in both, personnally I'd even say it is less comfortable than it is sporty. With such hard low speed damping, it's hard to call it comfortable, every road junction or small defect leads to a sharp thumb felt through the car. But that's quite a BMW thing in general.

      @@imnota You are absolutely spot on. Thank you for clarifying what you meant about how it all comes down to what we get used to. It really makes a huge difference in how we perceive a car. I ABSOLUTELY agree with everything you just wrote. My main point with the video was to share why I think my E46 330Ci is not a sports car, and it’s great to see we’re on the same page there. In my defense, I do think that for people coming from let's say a 3 or 4 cylinder economy cars, the E46 engine’s smoothness can feel surprisingly impressive. For example, I recently drove a brand-new VW with a 3-cylinder engine, and honestly, it felt like a tractor once you stepped on it. By comparison, my E46 felt lightyears ahead, even with its age. Also all my friends were impressed by the calmness and smoothness of the car when I drove them around for the first time. To be honest, before owning the E46, I didn’t really have clear expectations for how it would feel. I wasn’t imagining it to be a pure sports car, but I was still surprised by its mix of characteristics. It’s not exactly what a lot of younger enthusiasts seem to think it is. Like you said, it’s a car that was meant for middle-class dads and salesmen, not a factory drift machine or hillclimb monster. I think that point is lost on some people who get caught up in its reputation or internet hype. That's why I mentioned GT86 and a Miata in the video, because, over the past year of making RUclips videos, I’ve received countless messages from people asking if the E46 is comparable to cars like those, which are obviously way more sporty feeling. And yeah, dailying an E30 before owning the E46 definitely exaggerated some of those feelings for me. But even now, I think the E46 strikes that classic BMW balance. It’s not incredibly sporty or incredibly comfortable, but it does both well enough. Also, the F355 reference was just to get my point across about what I consider a true sports car. Obviously, it's not in the same realm, that's why I mentioned GT86 and a Miata in the video and not the F355.

      @@OGBemfa I noticed the Gt86 reference, but honestly I'd be curious to drive one, because I bet a stock one isn't everything we expect it to be either. Big sidewalls, mushy suspension, doubt it's a touge machine.

      @@imnota True, me too! But from what I could gather, the whole idea behind the GT86 (and also the new Miata) was to create a fun, lightweight sports car. Not overly fast, but one that truly handles like a proper sports car (or at least that's fun to drive even at low speeds). That’s why they equipped it with those skinny tires. These cars were designed from the ground up with that philosophy in mind. Plus, there are plenty of RUclips videos of people driving the GT86s and Miatas, and from what I’ve seen, it looks like these cars just love to dance. Anyway...Thank you for the constructive criticism. It’s much appreciated. I’ve been reflecting on it throughout the day, and it’s actually inspired some new video ideas haha.

      @OGBemfa День назад

      If you're planning to sell an E30 for an E46, at least aim for a 325i or a 330i to make it worthwhile. The 320i is pretty sluggish and will likely feel slower than your current car. Or probably even better - get an e36. If you daily a swapped E30 now, a nice stock 6cyl E36 will be a very good compromise between an E30 and an E46.
