War Memorials in Nithsdale and Annan Districts
Almost every town, village and hamlet has a war memorial, mostly covering WWI and WWII. Covenanter memorials are especially frequent in these areas due to the many supporters from these rural areas. Gretna has three rare war memorials to those animals who assisted the war effort. A VC is commemorated at Thornhill and even tiny Kingholm Quay has a memorial, a onetime haunt of Robert Burns in his job as an excise officer.

In Autumn What Controls Which Leaves on a Tree Fall First?

Leaf fall is triggered by the change in day length, average light levels and temperature. Leaves firsy re-cycle the useful leaf chemicals and then cause the join between the leaf stalk and the branch to break, often aided by the wind. Trees can also selectively lose leaves at other times of the year and a few species hold on to dead leaves to protect next years leaf buds from the cold and from ...

I visited a few years ago. I have been finding a bit more about the church and I believe the sunken stones at 2:05 are the MacGregor stones. They were originally inside the original medieval church but were tossed outside when the church was rebuilt by Black Duncan Campbell in 1615. There is a project which I believe is still ongoing to restore them to the original position where the medieval church. Many of the Campbells are also buried in the churchyard.

The bogton airfield area became known as the 'promised land' by local farmers. The nickname was a reference to the somewhat arogent military officials who seemed desperate to build an airfield on such unsuitable land and also reffered to the farmers having to wait to have the land inevitably given back after the project. The land is now used as a regular field and similar to the loch the foundations and marking remain in the field. Additionally the land is now very occasionally used by farmers for sheep dog trails and other events - the foundations remaining make the field easy to access and park in compared with much of the local boggy land. I was told this information by the late William 'Willie' Cook, former president of the Scottish Sheepdog Association. He was a great friend to many in the local area. A dedicated farmer, one of my fondest memories of him was sitting in that field at a sheepdog trial listening to the countless stories he had about farming and the local area Thanks Roger

I grew up in nearby Milton, a 1950s housing scheme not a far walk from there, one side of the station is Gilschochill area of Maryhill, the 1950s tenements at the other side of the station is Cadder, pronounced as Cawder. It is quite a lightly used line as everything I'm on that line, very few people are on the 158s and 156s and the odd 170s that ply the route.
