- Barytes or Barites is a form of Barium Sulphate used in industry and medicine. It was mined and processed on Arran from 1840 to 1862 and again from circa 1914 to 1938. It was taken down to boats at a quay in Sannox by rail. The iron overshot waterwheel was fed off mill ponds and lades running off the Sannox Burn. In 1938 9000 tons of Baryte were produced. The mines closed when the mineral vein was exhausted. Muirshiel had a Barytes mine that closed in 1969.
I live on Arran and have been patiently waiting for years now, for you to do some videos here. Thank you Roger
Thanks. I will see what I can do. Lots to film!
Great thanks Roger 👍👍
Thank-you
Great to see a video of Arran. Hopefully more to come roger . I live in lamlash .
I hope so too
That wheel must have been very impressive in its day. Interesting that there was such an industry on the island. You would have thought the shipping cost would have been prohibitive, but it must have been worth it. great video!
Yes, it is surprising. Arran's full of surprises
I had no idea that Arran had a mine on it or even a mineral railway/tramway. 😮
It is surprising
What’s baryte? Oh…there eventually is an explanation.
Better late than never :-)
