Ignorance of the laws of the country you are visiting is no excuse. Laos for the most part is a beautiful country. This goes for the Laotian people as well. You have to realize that the Laos China railway is an international railway subject to the same security as international airlines. As white tourists you are open to scams by some corrupt police. You need to research the countries you visit better. I understand your anxiety at them taking your passports. It happened to us in Shanghai China, after our flight was rerouted. It’s a scary moment. Before our connecting flight was boarding, our passports were returned. To this day I don’t know why they took are passports, no explanation was given. Perhaps they thought we were criminals or drug dealers. This problem you had could have happened in many countries, not only Laos. One of the downsides of international travel.

Yeah agreed, best part of Panama City is someplace else. Was just there for a couple of weeks. Yeah. They claim great beaches, just not the rocky trash lined beach along the west side of PCty and continuing north, noooo you only need to drive two hours to the other ocean. Have been traveling to Malaysia for over 13 years now on average twice a year. The tourist tax was reintroduced a few years ago and at RM10 per night is not excessive (about £2 a night). Pork and alcohol can be found in pretty much all supermarkets within the non halal section, but to be honest why did you want pork when Malaysian cuisine is so diverse and inexpensive. Although English is widely spoken it does help to be able to say a couple of phrases in Malay. As for power the electrical system in Malaysia is ok, no problem. I never have anything plugged in when there is a thunderstorm anywhere in the world.

Also, being gay is illegal in Malaysia!
