I built a solar summer house
Before you read on, I want to reiterate that I am not an electrician and am not qualified to give advice on how to wire up an electrical system - this is an illustration of how I did it personally - hopefully it gives a sense of what can be achieved - always read the manufacturer's instructions, do your research and consider hiring a professional who knows what they're doing.
Having been given a 50 watt solar panel as a gift to take and use when camping I decided it was just a bit big and bulky to carry around in the van, and not quite big enough to be worth mounting on the roof, so I decided to build my own Solar shed/summer house.
I wanted to be able to power up our little garden summer h...

Checking out the Bluetti AC 50S - Mini, Midi or Maxi, what size Solar Generator is right for you?

I bought a hand grinder - reviewing the Timemore C3 coffee grinder, and making esspresso.

Although I'd hardly call myself a coffee connoisseur, I really love a nice cup of esspresso in the morning and favour a good rich dark roasted coffee, wither with a spot of milk or as a straight shot. I tend to buy pre-ground, either from the supermarket (usually Lavazza) or from my local roasters (there are several good ones local to me). But, I really wanted to try grinding my own coffee from...

      @@JamesDunmore great stuff. Only thing I would suggest is looking at Lenovo's system upgrade grid. Part of my reasoning was selecting a model that still had over a year of upgrades. I do have a 175 watt panel on my shed roof and I charge the EB150 from that at home - I seem to get around 700 watt hours on a good day and the panel isn't optimally situated, so a similar amount should be do-able on a van I reckon. • @stewreviews9345

      Hi there - possibly - it depends on the power required by the scooter - these are "one c". That means there is a top level to how much power you can draw - around 350-400 watts with one battery, going up if you have more in parallel. So three should give over 1kw. If that's enough to power the scooter then I can't really see why it wouldn't work - best to check though - I am no expert.

You can certainly cast a TV show to the screen of the pioneer unit with a suitable phone app, or watch RUclips on it and so on. I don't know if you can connect to the onboard screen in an Elgrand (I don't have one as I have a pop top so didn't try) but I doubt it - very different systems and I'm not sure if the pioneer even has video out ports...

Genuinely, I thought the way you put this together with real world hands-on usage as well as comparisons to others on the market shows me you need to do more of this. This little device would also be fabulous if charged form a vans solar panels when the van is not in use and then brought into the home to power something like a small pc system for probably days on end. Every bit helps with the current price of energy. It's the perfect emergency bit of kit for round the home in a power outage. It looks smart too! Very well done Stew 👍👍

    Hi, I've just got some of these for a small trolling motor but Interested in why you would want to buy 3 of these instead of just a 100ah for around the same price? Maybe you got a good deal on them? In my camper I managed to make a 200ah lifepo4 for around £500 but having just purchased some of these eco-worthy for £140 each I would have much sooner used the total of £420 for one 100ah for my camper. It's a lot less wiring with only one battery too! Also these batteries are allowed by the manufacture for I think two in parallel but think 3 voids the warranty? Probably no real harm in connecting 3 together but it will shorten the life of the batteries as when lithium are put together in parallel uneven charge and discharge takes place with eddie current flowing between the packs. They can also sit there forever and a day trying to balance themselves out slowly bleeding away power and this can easily be avoided with just one 100ah. Cheers John

    • @stewreviews9345
      @stewreviews9345 2 года назад

      Spot on. The 50 and 100 amp hour batteries weren't available at the time. For this van I might in hindsight go with just a single 50 as I'm nowhere near ever running the batteries down, but I guess that's the point. They just seem to work. As a plus- even if left unused for several months they hold their power well, so I don't think that rebalancing issue is occuring - likely not an issue unless you have more than four in parallel..

      @paps69shed 2 года назад

      @@stewreviews9345 Hi stew thanks for the reply 👍👍 Yea I actually watched your vid over again and tbf you do give a good account of yourself. What happens in a parallel setup in say two 30ah batteries at a 60ah load is one will deliver say 25ah and the other will try and deliver 35ah. Even in matched batteries from the same suppliers this will happen and that's why some manufactures will not allow or limit the amount of lithium battery's in parallel banks. Say for instance in your setup your dc dc charger can deliver 40ha of charge ( mine is only 20ah for a 200ah pack). The 40 ah charge rate seems well within the capacity of your over 3x 30ah pack as it would seem you have 90ah capacity. What happens when two of these packs become fully charged and are shut then down by the bms? You now have 40ah going to one battery. This over current may then shut down that battery. Charging may also resume between the packs when your parked up as the packs try and balance back out. That was and extreme example but this going on between lithium batteries all the time due to slight differences in even identical batteries. What is also more likely to happen in your setup (if you ever draw large amps) is when you try and draw 90ah from your bank of 3 paralleled batteries, A temporally dominant battery in the pack my try to deliver more amps the the other two and then be shut down by its bms. Your left with two batteries then trying to pump 90ah from 60ah and they will also shut down or be driven past there limits. Manufactures who allow parallel setups on there battery's often state the bank should only be used at the limits of one in its pack. When I used these 30 ah lithium's in my trolling motor I parallel two together and have one as a return to home battery. My motor can pull 40ah from the 60ah parallel set at the most but I try disconnect the battery pack before the bms will shut one pack down before the other. I also limit my amp draw to 30ah In real world at small loads you wont even notice any of this as a problem but the detrimental effects add up over the years and your battery life will suffer. Big waffle on I know lol cheers John

      @@paps69shed interesting stuff. In my build I ultimately decided to go 12v only. I had forgotten but I did get into this with an electrician and decided that as my load would be low 3 in parallel should be fine (compressor fridge, lights, phone charging etc). I have the victron 30amp DC:DC charger. I've actually concluded that all told a Bluetti EB150 would have made more sense but I think at the time it cost more. Get one for around £800 now so the batteries, solar input, 1,000 watt inverter etc. Recently bought one to use around the house and to go into my next build and it is a pretty amazing device..

      @@stewreviews9345 Love to see the review on that Bluetti EB150. Looks decent for the price and will save a lot of folk the hassle of installing a power setup in there van. They state 1500wh so if they take that as 12v its around a 120ah battery in there but they maybe calculating at 14v which would come out at about 100ah. With a built in 1000watt invertor and solar mppt its actually a very good buy as you say 👍👍 Yes your load will only be very low on those things. In all honesty even if a bms did shut down one of your batteries (or even two) they would only tend to be shut down nearing charge completion (or depletion) and therefore the battery chemistry itself (not even the bms) would limit the current draw and probably would no longer suck to much juice. Will look out for more of reviews 😁 take care

    Just make sure that when you stick it between two seats, you're not covering up the ventilation grates on the sides, or you will cause it to overheat and then it will automatically shut down on you to avoid harming the device. Slide it either forward or back so that grated area on the sides is exposed and not covered up by the sides of your seats.

I've got them set up in my camper with a "DC:DC" charger attached to the alternator. Been using for best part of a year with no issues so far. I believe some people don't bother with the DC:DC, but from some information from Victron and elsewhere there is apparently risk of damaging the batteries and/or the alternator if you just hook them up directly (alternator can burn out or catch fire).
