Reviewing my Powkey 60 Watt folding solar panel and charging my Beaudens 166 WH Power Station

- In this unboxing and review video I take a look at the Powkey 60 watt folding solar panel, look at its features and test it on a sunny day in my garden, powering up my Beaudens 166 Watt Hour Solar Power Generator.
On day one I seemed to get a very low level of charge - possibly afternoon sun, poor positioning of the panel or the impact of shade - on day 2 however the panel performed much more strongly.
On balance I'm really pleased with this panel - I don't know exactly the power it's putting out, but I'm guessing that on a sunny day I'm getting more than 40 watts when the panel is angled correctly. I live in London with its relatively weak sun and a degree of pollution, so that's probably pretty good - suspect that deep in the Arizona desert, or a rooftop in Las Vegas, we'd get much closer to 60 watts.
If you want to buy one of these, or the Beaudens Power Station, please see the links below. Note that I'm a member of the Amazon Affiliates programme - this means that if you click on a link and make a purchase I will receive an incredibly tiny commission, at no cost to the purchaser:

So, this solar panel puts out a max of 60w. Pretty small by the standards of many panels for a campervan, would it work for you? How does your set up work?
I use 60W with the same unit and its just fine!
i also have the same power pack but i brought a 100w solar panel and it charges from 1 bar to full in 3 hours in full sun .im very happy with both items.
Just bought one from your link with the Power Gen thank you for this review
Cheers Neil. Unfortunately Amazon have booted me off of the associates programme as I don't have enough subscribers, but the thought is appreciated.
Great review! Sound is a bit low and I'm only getting it from left speaker for the first part of video. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Thank you. And interesting about the sound - I'll have a poke at the left and right channels next time around.
I bought the 100 watt version yesterday thanks for the video
Cheers Drew - glad you found the video helpful. 100 watts must be useful - I just thought it looked too large - how do you find it?
@@stewreviews9345 i will let you know.it gets delivered today.i also bought the jackery 500 so the panel is for that really
Great review ...will it work in the winter as well.........does it power a small tv.. kettle
In winter a 60 watt panel is going to give a lot less than that. Probably around 10 watts on a good day, so slow charging.
This set up will power at TV or laptop for a few hours - no chance at all with a kettle though.
@@stewreviews9345 thks
We can hear you fumbling around with packing material but we can't hear your voice. So much for the usefulness of your post.
Thanks for the feedback Knuckles - I know the sound could be better on this one. Something I've been trying hard to improve in subsequent videos..
Hi, thank you for this video, very instructive. Still, I would appreciate it, if you would show which cable did you use to connect the Beaudens generator to the solar panel. There are few cables that come with the generator and other fiew that come with the panel. I have just bought the same generator and a 100W Swarey solar panel, connected it today on my balcony with the simple round DC cable that I recieved with the panel, but the generator was not charging at all and thay should be compatible. Am I missing something, do i need to connect several cables? The angle of the panel was the one obtained by possitioning the support legs behind it,so i do not have much choice in changin this. I would very much appreciate any hint, since Beaudens support does not answer my emails.
Hi there - I think Beaudens as a company is no more but you should be able to charge it if the power station is working and the panel is good.. Just the one cable needed.
It plugs into the input port on the front of the Beaudens - are you plugging into the bottom socket, and do you have good sun across the whole panel?
@@stewreviews9345 thanx for your reply! Beaudens charges if i plug it into a wall socket so it should be charging also with the solar panel. When i connected both, i saw the icon for the panel on the B. small screen, but no charging started. It is not the perfect light, since the balcony fence bars shadows fall partially on it. Now that I know that the cable is right (i plug it into the red input hole on B), i.ll try to play with the panel, i hope i manage them to work together. I am completely new on this field and quite lost. So thank you very much for your feed back!
Can you review microphones and sound editing software next, please. You are a bit muffled at times! A good review though. How much did you pay? 100W ones are about £140 on Amazon at the moment. Do you still rate it?
I really should! I think I just need to buy a decent mic to be honest, and do more to balance the sound during the edit.. Thanks for the feedback.
All told I paid £115.99 for the panel.
Thanks. In the end, I ordered the 60w one the same as yours, at £90 so not outrageous. It really only needs to recharge powerbanks occasionally, and maybe a solar generator if I get one. It arrives tomorrow so looking forward to testing it out.
Well, had it for two days, and also bought a usb A extension lead and usb volt/amp meter for a few extra quid. It's good to have these as it's a bit of fun seeing how well things are charging when plugged in to a usb A socket (the control unit doesn't display any data, and is a bit of a pain to see anyway). Very impressed. It's v neat, compact and feels good quality. Very easy to store in the car camper. The panel charged up a 20000mAh powerbank fully from zero in just over 6 hours in full sun. If it keeps doing that, I'll be well happy 😁. Would the 100W panel charge the powerbank any quicker, is my only question? From what I've read, I'm not sure it would - there's only so much current you can give to the powerbank to charge it, and the 60W panel more than reaches the limit when in full sun. Any thoughts?
@@thewanderer8 my guess is that for a smaller power bank you'll see no difference on a sunny day as it'll be at max wattage for it's input. On a cloudy day however a bigger panel would pay off...
How is this holding up looking at getting the power bank and possibly the solar panels
Both are good. I haven't used the panels as much as expected. Power bank is in daily use.
Need a longer cable .Dond let stay Powerbank in the sun
No volume on your video. Bluetooth and a 80 watt subwoofer cant here anything
Sorry about that Wes - it sounded ok to me. Wereabouts in the video? If I can I'll boost it and reupload as it's fairly new ..
Richtiger 90Grad Winkel und kein Schatten.Need a longer loading Cable because dond whant to let Bank in sun.
I tend to have the power station behind the panels to keep it cool.
No one never tells what appliances you can run
With this I charge phone etc and can run a laptop for a few hours. It's a low capacity power station.
Cant hear
Sorry about that - I think that somehow I managed to only record sound in left or right channel so some viewers aren't getting sound. It's fine on my laptop and phone though - have tried to make sure the sound is better on subsequent videos...
