It's mostly silent discrimination behind the backs of the people we(they) hate. Not really that active and rarely to anyones face out in the public.
Skin colour means shit. Its what you do/dont! Finns respect every person who tries to help to build better Finland. We are racist against whites/blacks who just try to take advantage of our country.
Murder has no place in this country either. Yet we still have murderers. Does the existence of murderers make the whole country murderous? Exactly.
Sorry but Finland is racist!
kyllä
I am gonna add something that many of foreigner have not experienced yet. I basically live in Helsinki but every winter season i move to Lapland, Rovaniemi. While living in Helsinki is quite normal and i haven't felt any racism. Keep in mind that i have alot of public dealing on daily basis. Just so everyone know i have worked in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and in Winter Rovaniemi. Now while working in Rovaniemi the amount of racism and hatred i have felt is no where close to anything that i have felt in my 10 years living in the Nordics. My point is that Yes, Finland is not Racist country but it also depends where you live in Finland. It matters a lot where you live in Finland as if you live in bigger cities you will more likely to meet open minded people and you would feel more inclusive. Just for example i am Swedish Speaker my Finnish is not good and when i tell someone in Lapland that sorry i speak English or Swedish the reaction is just boggles your mind. I have been told so many times by the locals that why am i even here if i can't speak Finnish. I can go on but for now thats it. Sorry for the long comment but i wanted to say things from my experience as a foreigner . Also thanks also Chico for making such thoughtful videos...
Weren't you in the Voice of Finland? I really enjoyed your voice!
Hole europe is and will be big broblen whit illegal immigration in middle east and africa, that is not right we dont want islam to europe.
Very good opinion, it's good to hear people talk who can actually view things difference perspectives.
I've lived in Finland for 12 years and I'm not black so Finnish people speak honestly around me and about other races and the majority of Finland is racist and looks down on foreigners
Hey, does anyone know which EU study he is referring to? I would love to read it
Very interesting that he does not share that. Serious social studies will usually not make emphatic conclusion like "Finland is the MOST racist country", unless they have strong evidence I guess... you never know, could be. I'd love to read it too
He is probably referring to the 2018 report "Being Black in the EU". There was an YLE article about it as well. There are more recent studies done as well, which say a different thing.
@@mellowstrangler if this is the one, then I can say that Chico either does not understand what he reads or he engages with the topic in bad faith. Both options are not even mutually exclusive.
My generation dealt with racism decades ago, we went to school with all sorts of people and never even saw skin colour. Sadly the next generation want to make it an issue. I’m honestly sick and tired of people making it an issue. If they left it alone they would see it has nothing to do with skin colour it is how you act, how you treat others and certainly in Finland everyone respects personal space unless you know somebody very well. We rarely ever say hello to a stranger or even look at them.
That was great! I have had two of my bicycles stolen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and one in Helsinki, Finland. All in one year, which made me give up cycling for many years.
I'm conciderd as a racist, but I'm just criticising our immigration politics. That doesn't make you a racist, right? Everyone is welcome to Finland. Just come here to do something sensible and integrate. Those are my requirements and I don't think that's racist. Right?
That is me when people from hot countries start complaining about How 15 degrees is soo cold
I kinda like the dark winter nights, Almost no light but only the stars, the moon and the northern lights
Thank you for talking about this. kiitos.
All slow a follow-up of the Swedes/danes/norwegian. All by default Finland from the 1940's past and further wasnt tho all the changes forced to make made it as it is now. Another aqquisition is the forced EU commity and "force english" is what turn the table complete around. Nevertheless basically we just don't really care that much other than to work
I am a native Finn. And I completely agree with what you said at 5:10. But I would like to take it a step further. This also applies to negative emotions. I remember when I was a driver for foodora. I was often left in awkward situations. When food took too long to make, most of my coworkers around me got very animated, and visibly mad. Most of them were immigrants from countries, where that is a normal way of showing you are discontent. But in Finland, we judge silently, we get mad silently, but outwardly we appear patient and calm. So that is how most of the workers making the food were. Which made my coworkers even more mad, because they did not get the outward reaction they were looking for. And often they told me that these workers don't care, since they don't react to my yelling. When that could not be further from the truth. I know that the cooks were seething inside, us Finns just do not show it. And if we do, it is a huge deal. All this being said, I really like what you said at the end there. No one in these situations ever spoke of racism toward anyone. No one talked about race or anything. It was just a difference of action, that lead to frushtration. Very understandably from both sides. And while focusing on understanding cultural differences so you can understand and work with one another better in the future is needed. We do not want to go down the rout of cancellations or a lense of race with these situations. In these situation, I found best to explain what was going on, to both sides, and that had by far the best effect. Let's focus on doing that!
That is so true.
I just want to express my support for you. I get very annoyed when surveys are used to promote an agenda that isn't actually supported by them. If all claims "based on surveys" were true, Finland would be a country full of happiest people in the world who are also extremely racist, and 1/3 of men would constantly think of punching every woman wearing clothes they don't like. The truth is that Finns aren't the happiest people in the world, Finland isn't the most racist country in the EU, and 99% of men don't condone violence against women. Creating happiness (or contentment) in a society and combatting racism and violence are serious issues that should be addressed, and spreading misinformation about them is exactly the wrong way to do it. Thank you Chico for your great channel and for being a great person.
Racism wouldnt exist if you black people stopped being victims.
racism cannot be quantified like any normal statistic since it changes depending on location so wildly, where i grew up it couldnt even be called racism since it was the norm but here in the actual city area its a big deal if you say anything racist, basically just stay in big cities if you fear racism because these smaller towns dont sugarcoat things
I think Finnish people are jokingly racist. Although I have to say its not too rare to see extremists either.
As a Finn, we don't say racist things in common, but you can hear racist words between teenager's sometimes
Wow. I think you have found the very point.👍 You have even slowed down with your speech tempo. I'm happy for you. Enjoy the simplicity of living.
If you don't want racism you must immediately sweep aside anyone who throws accusations of racism around spuriously.
Yeah.. there are older generation which still uses words like nigger to refer to your type.. but even them rarely mean it as offensively.. Finnish is homogenous state, and you cant escape that.. acceptance of differences is inherent part of Finnish culture.. Swedish spat on us, Russia tried to enslave quater of us.. As long as you like Finland, average finn would protect you like any other finn.. even the most die hard racist ones.. Finland is a country of underdogs and to be underdog you need to take allies where you can... I'd gladly fight for finland next to the guy that I hate the most.. Its absolute horseshit to call finland racist country.. but it is fair to call finland the most nationalistic country.. but we know the difference between "our country is great" vs your country suck.. sometimes it overlaps, but we mean that we are proud of our own country.. and if you or any person is proud of their country, average fin would see that honourable
You are right. Finland has a very short history of dealing with different cultures. In my childhood, there practically wasn't any people of African or Asian origin visible in the streets of a smaller town. In my generation (around 50 years old), I'd say, it is more about dealing with cultures and appearances, that are foreign to us, and we are a bit clumsy sometimes. I myself get a bit anxious, when a totally different looking and behaving person appears, that is my fault, not their. :)
Oga go straight to the point
I'm in my fifties, and with the the majority of folks here: people are people no matter the skin color or origin, white, black, any color and any birthplace. I live near a multicultural high school, and I enjoy seeing the young integrating more or less to Finnishness, that's exactly what our country needs. Where I find lukewarm verbal and never actualized racism is in my parents' generation now in their eighties.
Finland is very hypocrite country. We think we can say whatever we want about Sweden, but when Sweden does that to us, Finns takes it as insult.
Thank you! My neighbours skin colour is black but they are my neighbour just as anyone else! I like them as neighbours as we smile and say Moi to each others every time we meet!
Hey, thanks, man😊! I appreciate your kind words, and nice to have you here with us. Let's keep Finland inclusive.
you know as a finn, im generally wary of romanis, middle-eastern people and black people. Not because I'm racist, but because in my experience has been that they are generally more agressive, violent and don't respect other people (especially elders). Muslim people too because of the teachings of the quran. But the common denominator is the accent; when I hear a finnish accent from a black person, i don't really see them as black. My experience and I try my best to let go of off the racism I've taught myself without being naive.
well, this is racist - if you are aware of that and you try to outgrow, good for you. Question is, what are the steps you are taking to challenge it?
Not all introverted people are racist 😉💜
I live in Finland and I'm half Russian, half Finnish. Racism in terms of hating on ppl of different skin color is very low, at least among young teens like me. But if we go to the nationality part, it can be much worse. Even before the war between Russia and Ukraine happened, I heard a lot of racist jokes about my nationality. I understand that Russia is a horrible country because of its government and past, but the people who didn't have any impact on any of the historical or political events don't have fault in it. Besides my own experience of racism towards me, one of my friends has received it too for his religion. Overall, among young people, especially 12-15 years of age, racism is very common. But overall Finland wants to include everyone in and bring different religions for people to learn about. In healthcare there are also good options for having doctors that can speak other languages than Finnish or Swedish.
Finn here. I think I know maybe one or 2 people who think about skin color in here. Every one else ( me included) will judge a person in our heads after seeing how they act and what they do. It's weird to me that race is such a big talking point around the world. We could not care less, if you act like the rest of the people around you. When in rome, act roman.
yes it is. you got lucky. dont come here
Good observations and view points. Made me feel a bit better about my country and fellow people here with all the negativity currently going in the world. Guess I kinda knew that things are pretty good here, even if not perfect, but that knowledge does get buried with all the negativity and bad stuff that comes from social media and news and so on. Thank you Sir.
Maybe you should try to find more positivity than negativity. Leave negativity behind.
As a British man here, I have found Finns pretty hard work..They don't talk much at work, let alone on the bus,I would say some like to challenge me, which is quite pretty.Do they see some foreigners as a threat? Of course it also depends what part of Finland you live in, certainly outside of the K3 will be different especially the further north you live.
I don't treat black people the same. Because it is kind of interesting, it's rare to see someone like you, someone different. Personality wise the same like any other, but the appearance is novel.
dude! well said, as another saffer in Finland, though white, I think you’re right. Finland is not racist, but all the polarizing language coming from elsewhere could chnage that.
Racism is a way silence opposition to multiculturalism, which is required for companies to have cheap labor. Simple as that. It works great, because people LOVE witch hunts, so they will find racism in anything for free.
Blaming racism is part of the mantra of woke culture. However, the thing is that if you appreciate Finland and Finns, they will appreciate you. No matter what these woke-people say. Your choice, then.
finland is very racist
Nope.

I so agree. Someone always hate you for who you are, no matter who you are or where from. You just have to learn to ignore the haters. And well, if you ignore everyone, you ignore the haters too lol.
Most racist country in Europe? What the what... Just... no. I think there are lot more racism in Eastern Europe and South Eastern Europe.
