Blue Sky Sanctuary
Добавлен 22 авг 2011
Living Off Grid in Baja Mexico since 2022, my goal has always been to make the most of my life, and enjoy freedom to the greatest extent that I can. I strive for a feeling of fulfillment, productivity, progress, creativity and contentment. I'm compelled to share what I learn along the way with others, so here I am! I believe we can evolve together collectively by simplifying our lives, consciously prioritizing, and taking steps that might be scary, but will ultimately liberate us.
I chose to sell my home in Canada and I bought my first property in Mexico in 2018. What happened from there you'll see on the channel. It's been an incredible journey, painfully challenging at times, but all worth it. I want to share what I've learned along the way, from purchasing property, to building, to off grid living, to the inner work we need to do to begin an undertaking that for many, myself included, can be scary or overwhelming. One step at a time. Poco a poco. Namaste.

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
??
Where are some of these people getting their information from .Over 1 Million Americans and Thousands of Canadians live in Mexico many of them own property in Mexico .If Mexico was so Dangerous and the cartel was coming after Americans and Canadians ,trust me the American and Canadian population in Mexico would be much smaller . The Cartel is not interested in Americans $1,500 a month social Security checks .They have bigger fish to fry . The Cartel want Americans and Canadians down in Mexico so that they can spend their money there and then the Cartel go in and extort Mexican businesses .AS far as I remember Americans or foreigners can buy /own property in Mexico just not beach front property or so many miles from the ocean .Maybe it's different now laws change all the time .
Thanks so much for weighing in Richard, yeah it really is incredible how common the fear of the cartel is, it comes up on my channel CONSTANTLY. Maybe it's for the best otherwise there'd be too many US & Canadian citizens down here ;)
Hi I have a couple of questions. How often do you here fireworks go off there? I have two cats and I’m struggling with finding a good quiet place in Mexico that would constantly upset them. Second question, I’m a big hiker. If you hike do you feel free and comfortable? Are the cartel in those mountains in Baja? I worry about being limited to exploring and hiking without accidentally running into a drug farm and getting shot down.
Hi there. Fireworks definitely go off here, esp at this time of year (Christmas/NY's) It makes my dogs very nervous. I usually just bring them in until it's over. As for the cartel in the mountains, I have no idea, but I definitely feel safe walking the beach, the sierra, in town, and on popular trails that take you over mountain ridges.
Brill vid, fam. It’s Baja for me. Looked inland, but well, yeah….west coast! Agreed, the best deal will not be online. Cheers.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! And hells yeah west coast Baja, it's pretty darn paradisial, cheers!
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja Cool! great word....I plan on being a nirvanian; Ensenada summer, TS winter.
@@alx7157 Haha I agree. I still remember the first time I heard that word. I had to google it yesterday to make sure I was spelling it right, but it's the best word to describe this place imo. A nirvanian in paradise is a fine plan ;)
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja Indeed, especially relevant to me as Nirvana since they were my hometown homies.
You can eat the nasal and aloe. Thanks.
I meant the Nepali. Sorry.
@@LReneeMorris Ah, I figured you meant the basil & aloe, but yes, I put the aloe in my smoothies when I remember, and I'm learning more about eating the cactus, thanks for the heads up!
Blue sky!! Yeah!! I think Zuckerberg stole the name for his new website
What country are you a citizen of?
I'm Canadian. I have Temporary Residency in Mexico, which will turn into Permanent next year.
Mexico is FAR safer than Canada. And yes, the Cartels in Mexico are FAR more trustworthy than the Canadian government. Emphasize FAR.
You could do an entire video on "knick knacks", you got "knick knacks" hanging everywhere! I look forward to the upcoming "knick knack" video, and of course the cactus tutorial🌵. #cement
Do I? Lol there's a lot that needs to be organized & put away.. Stuff laying around, forcing me to surrender because I can't get it all done in a timely manner. Knick knack's a nice way to refer to the clutter I suppose ;)
And don't forget how cheap the fire starter is! Mine does not go into the septic either:)
Haha right? I love burning my tp, it's the best fire starter!
Great editorial without wasting time! You sum it up perfectly and I agree with everything from my experiences in Mexico. Especially the safety! After my wreck between Tampico and Veracruz in the middle of nowhere I was taken home by my nurse and they let me stay in their kids room until I was well enough to fly back to the US. I still tell them that they flew me the wrong way!! I was going to Belize. Its been 7 years now and I am ready to get back. Thanks for your videos!!
Oh my gosh what a great story. That's exactly what I mean, the people here are unbelievably kind. Flew you the wrong way lol that's hilarious. Thanks again for tuning in Shannon!
@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja to say that you have made my days better and brighter is a understand! You are the best of all the videos I have seen and let me tell you in the last 7 years I have seen alot. I have remembered so much more about the time I spent in Mexico!! I was going to Belize to stay and never come back but after the wreck I fell in love with the Mexican people and the fact is I found that they are very good people! Much easier to get along with and even more so than Belizean. Thank you for your time and story!! Have a great day!
@@Shannon-u8v Aw, how touching, thank you Shannon! Well Mexico is going to welcome you back with open arms as soon as you're ready to return, that's for sure. Thanks always for your kind words, you take care! 🌞
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja I still have a little trouble saying things exactly right. I actually see exactly what I was planning to do in everything you have. I just had a little set back and it's probably for the best.I am so happy for you and to watch your videos on your journey. I don't mean to sound so awkward. It's just that you have absolutely the right amount of everything as I would have. I have been in construction and general contracting most of my life and after retiring to raise my two sons I flipped a few homes and properties. Yes ma'am! I am ready to get back to work!! Thanks again!
Spot on with these! With time you can find local help with all that you need help with (from English speaking locals). Bilingual indeed is the way to go. I love this channel as I find it peaceful. Veda spoke of the healthcare... there is the public healthcare system and a more advanced private healthcare system for more money of course. I'd love for you to do a video on the organic food you are eating there. I'm sure you have heard about the food crisis being exposed here in America. Will those cactus give you tunas?
Thanks again Mphscat, I'm so glad you continue to enjoy the channel, and that you find it peaceful too, that's awesome. I try to keep it peaceful here at the Sanctuary. I also appreciate you continuing to encourage me to share about food & health, I promise I will. I've just begun my gardens this past year, I look forward to having much more in time. The cactus I have here will mostly produce dragonfruit but thanks to you & a quick Google search you helped me learn that I do indeed have cactus here that will produce tunas!! Thanks for the heads up! ❤🙏👌
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja My Mexican husband taught me about the tunas which grow on the cactus! I've seen them in the wild which is very cool as is your way of life there. I'm Candis if I have not said.
@@Mphscat Ah very cool. I love that I got to learn something new from you, thanks again Candis! (and thanks for sharing your name too, although I like Mphscat too ;)
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja That works too lol :))
I've never heard anyone make the analogy between the certainty and safety of a Feidecomiso bank trust through a Mexican bank vs having a mortgage with a bank in the US or Canada. You hit the nail on the head. There is nothing certain when you have a mortgage. You don't own your house. The bank does. They just allow you to keep your clothing there. As my Dad once said, "If you think no one cares, try missing a payment." 🙂
Agreed. Just for fun... look up Latin origin for "mortgage".
AND! just miss a couple property tax pmts in the USA -they will take your property and sell it!
@ You got that right. And taxes in the US are sky high and they’re forever. My property taxes in the US were $970 per month. On my Mexico home, $240/year! And, guess which one has the ocean view? Viva Mexico!!! 🇲🇽😊
Haha thanks Rick, I always enjoy your perspective & appreciate you weighing in. Okay I confess it's pretty easy to say that because we always agree but that aside! 😆 I did some research, 1 in 5000 mortgages in the US end in foreclosure. Banks. Daylight robbers, all day every day.
@@brandonteq Oh that is hilarious. death pledge, wow! What a great fun fact lol thanks for sharing.
I notice you use the word "us" several times in your vlogs, can you explain why
Yes we all want to know?
It's not the first time I've been asked this question. I might've added it to the list of 5 questions but it wouldn't be helpful to the majority who tune in lol. Anyway. It's a curious question imo. If I simply use I all the time, I'll sound totally self absorbed very quickly. Besides that, it's not always just me. For example, 'it's easy for us to drive back & forth to Canada' It's not just easy for me, but for my family, friends, ect.. 'We have cities an hour north & south of here..' again not just me, but everyone that lives here has that. 'We built this or that.' I don't generally build stuff on my own, I have workers who help a great deal. Ect Ect Ect.
@@2012zk see my answer, just above or below por favor, gracias.

Right on, wishing you all the best with that!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm doing pretty much the same thing but in the Central Highlands México. Tried Baja... Tooooo hot. But miss the ocean
Right on.. I look forward to visiting Mexico City and the surrounding areas in time, I can imagine living amidst that lush greenery, it would be a great change, but I'd miss the ocean too.
That's a beautiful place, where is it?
We're in Baja California Sur
I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for letting me know! Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
My friend bought land in Tulum, cleared it, added water & septic, started building. Then one day the cartels arrived with machine guns and said, "this is ours now". Going to the police would of course be futile so he had no choice, he left. That's the reality of building in Mexico.
I really love that gate and fence. Did you build that as well? Beautiful property!
Thank you Re! I had that gate custom made yes, it was kind of a gift to myself :) and the wall yes, we built that, we literally built everything that's here, it was just an untouched piece of land when I arrived.
Looks a lot like Arizona including the soil that's like concrete (I used to follow an Arizona gardening channel but it quit posting). If you have space/time/interest conducting an experiment I'd wonder if growing in native soil would work if it gets loosened up. Because the main issue isn't lack of OM (which is still important, btw OM=organic matter) but that the soil is so hard that plants/veggies can't dig their roots deep enough to begin with. Your husband could use a pickax to dig say a 2x4 bed 2 feet deep and try to grow some tomatoes or something and see if it works because building raised beds and then constantly supplying enough compost to sustain them every year is probably gonna take a lot of time/work/resources.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and yes the soil is definitely like concrete! I think a combination of both what you're suggesting, AND what I'm already doing might be best. I like the raised beds for working in, and maybe more important than that, it protects what's inside the beds from my dogs, who will dig into anything, but more joyfully into softer soil that I'm growing in lol. So pickax the earth first, the have the raised bed on top, so the plants can grow down into the ground, but also be protected. Sounds good to me!
@@BlueSkySanctuaryBaja Sounds very wise to me. I like that you're not disregarding the native soil underneath your (future) raised beds like so many (Americans) tend to do. And yeah, dogs are fun until they start messing with your garden, I forgot about this factor, so yep, in this case a raised bed (with solid walls) is pretty much a must have.
@@georgecarlin2656 Thanks for your kind & positive feedback. Yes the beds are, & will definitely be bottomless so the plants can reach down into the native soil.
That is a big wall you got there! Why is that necessary/desirable?
Haha it sure is, and great question! While not necessary, definitely desirable. It provides privacy primarily, but it also blocks dust from the road, and directs water when the heavy rains come, it basically protects the property.
Yes it did Thank you!!
Thanks for tuning in!
You need to grow some mesquite, palo verde, and moringa to help give some shade to your yard and house. Also recommend pakistani mulberry trees do really well in that climate and will give you lot’s of berries
I guess you didn't make it very far into the video, as I talk extensively about & show the moringa I'm already growing lol. Not sure about finding pakistani mulberry trees in this area but I'll keep my ears open thanks
great video and ALL true aboiut Canada
Thanks for weighing in Jocelyn, glad you enjoyed the video!
Y'all know ya miss the hippie hot tub under the snow capped mountains looking up at Polaris flanked by the King and Queen of the North with the fire cracking and the homemade pine scented candle torch a blazing:)
What I know is I'm out at my fire pit more nights than not. I see Polaris easily as the sky is clear & free of pollution, light & otherwise.. I start with burning my TP, and then the fire grows from there. I feel grateful every night that this is my life, and not just a passing moment I have while I'm on vacation;)
fan in the tent, looks cozy! doggy approved :)
Hehee, yep she totally approved, waiting each night for me to carry her out there lol
Please dont' say "The Baja"
I was made aware that The Baja is incorrect sometime in the last year, but after a decade of saying The Baja, it's a hard habit to break. Having said that, why do you feel so strongly about it, I'm curious.
PS. You know who doesn't care if you say The Baja? Mexicans. It seems to be only pretentious Americans who want to point out your poor grammar. What's the point really?
I'm looking forward for some gardening videos, I'm curious how stuff grows in your area.
Thanks for letting me know, I always want to hear what people are most interested in. I have a lot to learn about growing here, but I've started, and plan to get better. Here's a video that shows what I've started so far if you'd like to see. ruclips.net/video/pvm6X_wzxRo/видео.html
New wall looks good Doing good keep going Take care Ray
Thanks Ray, I appreciate the encouragement! That wall was actually one of the first things we built when I bought this property. It's not finished because there are so many other things to spend the money on, but thanks all the same, you take care too.
This is a beautiful channel! I lived in Belize for several years and grew Moringa into shade trees! It’s a great medicinal and super food… good stuff! ☀️🚐✨✨
Thanks for your kind words, and yes! I so look forward to my moringa trees growing so big that they'll provide shade, I know it won't be too long.. Well, a few short years and I'll be laughing, they grow incredibly fast as you know! 🌱
Great videos BlueSkySanctuaryBaja are you planning to Airbnb in the future ?
Thank you, and yes, I am :)
Man, did #4 speak to me. People lost their minds during the pandemic. I actually saw a fist fight in Whole Foods in CA over someone not walking in the direction of the arrows. Remember those ridiculous arrows? Almost as stupid as the plexiglass partitions. Good Lord, it was nuts. And, that was over a pandemic that was relatively harmless to healthy people. Could me MUCH worse next time. And, yes, living off grid, far from population centers, self reliant and stocked up with supplies is a great idea. And, being surrounded on three sides by water doesn't hurt your odds of getting sick in the first place either. I know this video focused on off grid living, but you should consider doing a video on two gigantic reasons why living in Mexico is better than Canada or the US..... #1: WAY lower property taxes #2: WAY lower cost of Healthcare. I personally know people with paid off houses in the US and they're still really struggling due primarily to those two reasons. Retirement is phenomenal in Mexico. Terrible in the US.
Lol hey Rick, thanks for weighing in. As usual, I agree with everything you said, and I confess your story about the fist fight in Whole foods made me laugh out loud. 🤭 I absolutely remember those arrows hahahaa, there was so much ridiculousness going on and yep, it could definitely get much worse. I also appreciate the video idea, I'm always looking for ideas! Problem is, most of my viewers are in the US, and probably aren't going to want to hear some of those hard truths. Another thing I often think about is the fact that the dollar continues to lose value, so the longer people wait to get out of there, the harder it will be. But I don't think I'm ready to make a video about that yet. ;) The health care thing though, I juuust might.. I have some first hand personal experience with it, so let's see what happens. Thanks again for always for being part of the conversation, it's nice to know I'm not alone!
@@rickvillelli4652 spot on! I agree with you a 💯!!!
The pandemic was total fraud.
How much solar are you running? Batteries? Inverter? I have a EG4 24000 Btu mini split that runs directly off solar panels. Of course at night it would have to run off of charged Batteries.
I made a video that talks about and shows all those details. My mini splits run off solar also. Good stuff! For more info, here you go ruclips.net/video/bRCLqOaukds/видео.html

How's the organic food situation?
@Jose-b2k1u Monsanto global bud
Where I live, fruits n veggies are rarely labelled organic, but I have no doubt they're less treated than up north. Tell tale signs, for example, the sweet potatoes, ginger, onions, they all sprout easily, meaning they haven't been sprayed with growth inhibitor. Most produce is not as big as up north. I'm no expert, but that to me is also a good sign. Less perfect looking, also good. Eggs are top notch, not washed or refrigerated, also a really good sign.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos and hear about the progress of your journey! Keep doing what you do! I will be doing something similar in the near future and everything you do and say is helpful! Safe journey
Thanks Shannon, glad I can be of service, all the best to you!
Im from Rosarito Baja California, alot of American communities here , im glad you are brave to go off grid and retire in our beautiful neighbor state Baja Sur , saddly violence is real topic in our country just be careful with people of the bad side (narcos), and dont draw attention. Just keep it lowkey.
Andrew is just kissing ass. He doesn't know our history, inviting those intrusives over. That's how they stole Texas
Thanks for looking out for me. I actually made a full video about my experiences here related to safety. A funny twist is that the guy that was conning me was 'taken care of' by the cartel, due to a completely unrelated incident. I know that in many ways they try to keep communities problem free. That said, I do stay pretty low key, other than this channel. If you'd like to hear that story, here's the link. ruclips.net/video/pvF6YPheCqY/видео.html
Why not Baja Norte? The climate is much milder on the west coast with better infrastructure.
I drove through Baja Norte on my way here from Canada and it didn't inspire me to stay, so here I am, lol. I'm on the west coast though, enjoying those ocean breezes, but in the dead of summer it's still really warm.
Do you have a septic system, composting or out house facilities? Do you have local internet or starlink?
I have Baja Connect for internet, it's been excellent. I have a house with a flush toilet, no need for an outhouse thank goodness lol, and yes to both the septic & compost. I share a bit more about them in this video if you'd like to see more. ruclips.net/video/pvm6X_wzxRo/видео.html
