I have a darker read. The judge is inseparable from thought and perception. In order to survive in life, we all make a deal with this creature. The cold forger in the dream - McCarthy at his typewriter, not engaging in violence himself (exiled from fires - the primary symbol for violence), engraving a fake portrait of Man, hoping it would be authentic enough to be successful. He thought of himself as making a deal with this judge for literary power. Note that the judge and the unnamed narrator, who people seem to forget does opine from time to time in the text, launch into scientific language and dense, borderline unparsable language. The true horror is that even though the judge is strange and remote, we must each of us encounter and bargain with him as we make sense of the world. Even our neurons compete with each other for resources. The Neural Darwinism of pure abstraction. Thought means making a distinction between elements; war goes on at every scale, from civilizations to families to base Nature, down to molecules. The smallest crumbs that might devour us

I find it disturbing that people don't know Priscilla was told her autobiography wasn't exciting enough by the publisher. She had to embellish it to make it more interesting, she later said she regretted embellishing certain details. Now, fast forward to over 30 years later Sofia Coppola made a film based on the embellished version of her book. This makes both works of fiction. If you're going to work off a work of fiction, at least warn people that it is not true. The recent Elvis film was by and large fairly accurate, only a couple of details were shuffled around to suit the timeline or to include a details where they were key to the social climate of the time. Also, Priscilla was in the 9th grade, but she was living in Germany living it up with older boyfriends, where the legal age was 14. She knew it well and used it to meet Elvis. She was a fan. Elvis already had 5 girlfriends in the army, Priscilla wasn't one of them. At 9.52 "Elvis deep-throated a microphone...he let the intrusive thought win" I'm puzzled by this comment and why you'd put the words intrusive thoughts in there? Clearly the song, Poke Salad Annie is about a girl doing favours for money becasue the men in her family are too useless to earn money by working and she brings home the money. Elvis was a grown man, with a sense of humour, he introduced the song in the live show with "Ladies & Gentlemen, we're gonna get dirty on you..." So, the warning was clear enough, there should be no confusion on why he did that. It was within context and makes sense if you've watched all of the now released, cuts of the That's The Way It Is, film footage of 1970. You can't judge his thoughts without looking at that moment in *context. I think it was hilarious.

  • @Nothingness687

Speaking of real people in Blood Meridian I found an interesting detail. When Chamberlain joined the scalp hunters he says that he met some of his old comrades, who were Ben Tobin, Doc Irving and Sam Tate. When the gang members were doing their crimes in Yuma, Chamberlain along with Tobin, Marcus Webster and Tom Hitchcock decided to leave the gang, because they were disgusted with other’s behaviour. In BM we don’t know what exactly happened to Tobin, Irving, Tate and Webster. It’s never clearly stated that the Judge killed Tobin, we never knew if Webster and Irving died in Yuma, and we never knew what happened to Tate after the kid left him in the mountains (after the kid leaves it is said in the book that he hears shooting from a distance, which could be Tate fighting against Elias’s scouts). McCarthy never revealed the deaths of exactly those characters who were mentioned more frequently in Chamberlain’s memoirs, especially because real Tobin and Webster 100% survived.

Oh dear, another misinformed millennial trying to score some virtue-signalling points. 🥱 Try doing some research into Elvis' life before posting such misinformed nonsense. He didn't steal anyone's music because music does not belong to anyone. Was B.B. King guilty of cultural appropriation because he played a white-invented instrument - i.e. the electric guitar? (btw, B.B. King's opinion of Elvis is the opposite of yours). Or how about Charlie Parker and his association with the Saxophone? The list goes on. You're just repeating the same done-to-death nonsense I've heard countless times before, and by the usual suspects - and all before you were even born. Your lack of knowledge on this matter would be laughable if it wasn't so childishly cringeworthy. It is rather telling that the black people who thought Elvis was a racist are the ones who never met or worked with him, and are just believing and repeating nonsense they've heard from other misinformed fools. Quincy Jones was one of them, and jumped on the 'Elvis was a racist' bandwagon. When Elvis appeared on the Dorsey Brothers Stage Show (Elvis' first TV appearance) one of the brothers supposedly told Jones that they didn't really want this 'racist' on their show. Now, there is no documented evidence that they ever regarded Elvis as any such thing. Another lie that Quincy Jones told about Elvis was that whenever he saw Elvis, he was with the songwriter Otis Blackwell (who wrote several famous hits for Elvis), who he said was giving Elvis singing lessons. Firstly, Elvis didn't need lessons in singing, and secondly, when appearing on the Letterman Show back in the '80s, Otis Blackwell stated that he and Elvis never met, despite the songwriting association. Ask those black people who actually knew him worked with him, and were on the receiving end of his random acts of kindness. His black childhood friend, Sam Bell, stated that Elvis didn't have a racist bone in his body. I'll listen to them before I'd listen to someone who knows little of Elvis' life. Their opinion is somewhat different from those filled with blind hatred. More info here if you're interested (not that you'll let any informed opinion into that echo chamber you inhabit) : www.elvis.com.au/presley/elvis-not-racist.shtml

Just as an aside, the bit about the brimstone gunpowder making may sound fantastical and ridiculous, but it is actually clever chemistry. Your urine is the primary source of the potassium/sodium nitrate which has been used since the medieval era as the critical oxidizer in gunpower. The 'brimstone' is just describing geology of a volcanic origin, which will contain the sulfur; used as a catalyst to bring down the activation energy necessary to initiate combustion of the resulting powder. From there simple charcoal from a campfire can be used as the 'fuel'. So, fun fact for the day, your renal system is a built in gunpowder factory.

You have the right to your opinion but you must NOT know Elvis' background bc he lived in a black neighborhood and lived in extreme poverty and poverty doesn't choose based a person's skin color. A person or family can be in poverty whether you're black or white. He went to church with black people while he was a very young boy and racism is taught. Too early to distinguish between black and white people. Something that isn't said is "racism" is taught rather than somebody is born a racist. People learn racism by whoever they hang around with. Elvis suffered in poverty in a black neighborhood in extreme conditions just like black people living in poverty. They lived among each other. Js. Elvis defended the Sweet Inspirations and gave the credit to Chuck Berry saying that Chuck Berry is the real king of rock & roll. He gave the credit to the black people before him singing rock & roll music. Elvis had his own songs outside of Hound Dog By Big Mama Thornton, Elvis remade the song to fit his style. He was the first pop star plus so many things of the time. Elvis knew he could become a singer and what he did was stand in (bc of the urgency of living in poverty) for the rock n' roll movement. Television was new and Elvis was "the legs" moving rock music/modern music forward. He changed society and blending of the races began and his presence as an influencer helped societal laws change and the black movement of stopping the Segregation Laws (especially in the south) of the time to move society forward. He had black friends (bc he was the same as the black kids bc he was a child just like them) and he saw them as his friends without race ever being an issue. Sam Phillips said that the race records weren't selling. In fact, he was looking for a white person that could sing black person. Elvis could bc his ROOTS are with black people, black friends, black families bc it's his ROOTS and his heritage, lineage, it's where he comes from, his background, what he inherited at the start of his life. That could be WHY Elvis picked Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton to sing bc he saw people as a bigger whole bc of what they experienced together growing up. Can't expect him to deny his heritage. Nobody really thinks about that. Just quick to accuse.... It's just my point of view that's all.... Js. 🎉

Elvis’ manager, Col. Tom Parker, said in a press conference shortly after his death: “Elvis didn’t die. The body did. We’re keeping up the good spirits. We’re keeping Elvis alive. I talked to him this morning and he told me to 'carry on.’” (Elvis did not die and he wanted out. - Col. Tom Parker. 1977) After hearing so many stories about the death of Elvis Presley, I have decided to tell the world the real story on the facts concerning that day in August, 1977. Yes, that day, the 16th of August. Is it a coincidence that a person born on that January 8, first month, eighth day, would perish on the 8th month and the 16th day? Probably if two (2) people were born on that day it makes more sense. You see, numerology always played an important part of my life and still does today. So many people have written or spoke about my death as a hoax. It was not a hoax! I decided to reinvent myself in the form of my brother (Jesse Garon) and yes, Elvis Presley did die that day. But after much searching for the right people, I found several people from different states who I consider my most loyal and trustworthy friends. To some people this book will be just another scandalous piece of fiction, but when you are done I think you will think otherwise. I always felt my brother deserved to live and what better way to let him live his life than to end mine. I was lonely, depressed, in bad health and my numerology chart said that this was the time for it to come to end. Anyone who studies numerology will understand, those who don't may want to look into it. All of the facts (and there are many) even the experts will say they are more than coincidences. I no longer give away Cadillacs or expensive pieces of jewelry because I am nothing more than a man who had a very famous brother. I am not a great literate (I never wrote my own songs), but I am not illiterate either. The perfect day August 16, 1977, 1 + 9 + 7 + 7 = 24, my age backwards (42), the facts go on and on. But my true reasons for the book are for my fans. My death was not a hoax! To my fans, please forgive me, my brother deserved to live, he was with me constantly (spiritually). My life would not be the same had he lived at birth. This was my way of giving him life, and corny as it sounds. The Colonel took this secret to his grave. He was a loyal friend. But I will no longer stand by and have people like Gail Brewer tell you stories that are pure fiction. This book written by a true friend will help you realize why I did what I did. - The Truth About Elvis Aron Presley In His Own Words. (2001). My fascination with the idea of a hoax about death was when Jim Morrison died July 3rd, 1971. Although I saw no correlation (he died at age 27) I was astounded that as famous as he was the body was just closed up and shipped out. Now I don't know all the facts concerning his death. I thought it awfully strange that no autopsy was performed (or so I thought) and just forgotten about. There were a lot of rumors about his death. I noticed he was born on the 8th day. Born in 1944 = 1-8 and died in 1971 = 1-8. Remember my comeback in 1968? 1+9+6+8 = 24. Obviously, I was no longer 24, so I reversed the age to 42. The next time that number had any relevance was 1977 (1+9+7+7 = 24 when I would be 42. Numerology can and does play an important part of my life and we knew that would have to be the date. Most people if they know what to look for will find significance in the forms of numbers in all of my movies! Example: gravestone in " Loving You" (year) 1878 = ? (1+8+7+8 = 24). You have to look at the movies. My hero James Dean died at the age of 24, but I was on top of the world then and wanted to live. - The Truth About Elvis Aron Presley In His Own Words. (2001). I will start about 1974 when the thought first came to me about faking my death. I have always been fascinated with the occult and other spiritual things. When I first saw a wax dummy of myself made by a Mr. Cooper I was fascinated with it. For some time I had thought if it was possible? Could I pull this thing off? I had asked Mr Cooper if he could make another wax dummy for me. He said he could. I in turn said I wanted him to do it and keep it strictly confidential. When I had mentioned it to a very few close friends (Joe Esposito, Larry Geller) they did not think I was serious. I was tired of being Elvis Presley, my health was deteriorating. I just couldn't keep up. My finances were floundering because of my daddy's poor business ventures. I was at my wit's end. As the years progressed I had my ups and downs which are pretty well documented in other books. I also had two detectives from Colorado who I trusted immensely. Originally the date was 1976 according to my numerology charts but I chickened out. A pact was made on the grounds of Graceland one night, hands placed over hands that this secret would never be spoken of outside this room. I picked four (4) of us initially and to this day all have kept the secret. I also know when this book reaches the bookstores people (my loyal friends) will be heartbroken. They took care of me and convinced others that I was no longer alive. In reality Elvis Presley died that day and my twin brother "Jesse" came to life, living in hiding but as a normal human being. I skip around because I am writing stream of consciousness. My own Daddy bless his soul never knew the truth. Little Lisa was told months later and explained to her she would not see me much. The Colonel took this secret to his grave. Many people believe me to still be alive but I was told in the beginning there would be no contact in order for this to work. I go thru a lot of ups and downs since 1977 and have lived in many states but I insisted I needed to be in a warm climate. My personal thoughts are that my fans will understand. That is very important to me. I just could not face myself any more after seeing myself in the mirror and that is where Larry Geller came in. He asked if he could write a book, and I gave him my blessing. "If I Can Dream" is the title and I like his book. He had filled my head with spiritual thoughts and made me believe we could pull this off. If I had stayed longer I think I would have been booed off the stage. That is why I chose the date 8-16-77. Do you know how many famous people passed away on that date? The great Robert Johnson died on 8-16 and he was born in 1935! Babe Ruth, and Bela Lugosi and many others. I must say I was very nervous that day 8-16. But it had to be done before I went on the road where I would not have been able to pull it off. Did you know there are secret compartments in Graceland that very few people know about! A few like Vester would joke about my being alive but no one took him serious. Many of my friends would ask if I were still alive and they have their doubts but as it was I might have died broke and just a shell of myself. I was given an injection that looked like I was dead but the people closest to me knew better. Believe me I had my doubts that this could be pulled off. But it did and I became Jesse, just a poor white southern boy who didn't sing a lick of anything. I feel bad my Daddy wasn't allowed to know but it just couldn't be done. I better go now and collect my thoughts to tell you the rest next time. - The Truth About Elvis Aron Presley In His Own Words. (2001). You disagree with any of the deductions that argue of Judge Holden being Satan/the Devil, and to call that too “simple” while only saying that Judge Holden is a “War God” with no supporting arguments, the Satan deduction at least has many supporting references, from the fiddle being a favorite of the Devil, his ideology of war and hatred of man, to even how Holden made gunpowder that you mentioned in your video.

The Judge to me seems to be the Devil, or Lucifer, or perhaps a descendent of the nephalim. One thing that always sticks with me is how he would run his hands through his fleshy folds and remove things, like bugs of some sort.

Great discussion! Thanks for doing this. Been an Elvis fan since I was 9 years old as the movies were often on weekends during the day (early 80s). It can be hard to rank because, for example, Stay Away Joe is in many ways his worst movie but there are some excellent scenes and Elvis looks so cool and comfortable in his skin. Note when he is at the party and casually grabs a match out of his friends shirt pocket to light his cigar. Elvis looks great in this and is having fun. Too bad it’s such a bad movie. Girls Girls Girls is another one where Elvis looks fantastic and has great energy but the script is very light and he deserved better. I actually enjoyed Clmabake as I love the prince and the pauper premise, chemistry with Shelly Fabares, Bill Bixby (who I grew up with watching Incredible Hulk, some good songs, and an overall heartwarming story). Having said all that, here’s my stab at a ranking: 31. Easy Come, Easy Go 30. Double Trouble 29. Kissin Cousins 28. Speedway 27. Frankie and Johnny 26. Tickle Me 25. Harum Scarum 24. The Trouble with Girls 23. Paradise Hawaiian Style 22. Stay away Joe (because of Elvis energy and look) 21. Spinout 20. Charro 19. Clambake 18. Girl Happy 17. Girls Girls Girls 16. GI Blues (love the soundtrack tho) 15. Jailhouse Rock 14. Fun in Acapulco 13. Live a Little, Love a Little 12. It Happened at the Worlds Fair 11. Roustabout 10. Loving You 9. Viva Las Vegas 8. Flaming Star 7. Love me Tender 6. Kid Galahad 5. Change of Habit 4. Blue Hawaii 3. Follow that Dream 2. Wild in the Country 1. King Creole

Personally, I think the only way to adapt Blood Meridian to the screen is an R-Rated 2D animated mini-series akin to Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. Hell, HBO Max would probably be able to get away with it seeing as they include controversial titles such as GoT on their platform. As for the plot, it would only contain three episodes. First act would be when The Kid runs away from home and joins the Glantons, Second episode could follow the atrocities the gang commits along the border, then the final act would the the Yuma ambush, the disintegration of the gang, and then a short epilogue where the Judge meets The Kid (now “The Man”) years later then kills him in the outhouse outside the saloon. Live-action would cost too much and I think shortening/cutting out sections of the book like The Kid’s brief stint in the army and when he gets separated from the gang in the mountains might be a small cost to pay for the sake of the series’ pacing. Idk. That’s just my two thoughts.

Judge Holden is basically the western version of Hannibal Lecter.
