They released a news story a few days ago in the Montgomery County Chronicle. They will be excavating points of interest on the Bender property in 2024.
I came across this story a few weeks ago, while looking up history on a haunted location. What was not mentioned was those who searched for bodies tortured a man they thought knew details at the house where the bodies was found, and arrests was made of those possibly involved. In 1910 a woman on her death bed gave details about murders her family committed, she was married at one time, years before her death she ran house of prostitution, her last years she stayed to herself. She gave her real name as Kate instead of the name she was known, and said her family was hunted down and attacked "with her being the only survivor". Of course DNA would be the only truth.
Was so good. Loved it My maiden name is Bender and have heard this story forever. Read everything I could find on it but not related. Always heard Kate was a redhead such as I am lol My great great grandfather was also named Jacob. Born in Germany came here and served in the Mexican War. Settling in Iowa in 1850
My Grandpa told me he once stopped at a hotel in Kansas and was refused a room because his last name was Bender. One of his cousins married the infamous outlaw Al Jennings
my sister and i were informed very possible we had kin stayed at that inn of theirs, and when they got there, they vanished. never seen again not traceable. they were on way somewhere in a covered wagon between parsons and cherryvalle
I don't even recall what reference this morning had me looking up the unfamiliar Bender family. Here I am 3 articles in and even more videos while I rest today. I'm surprised they are unknown to me. What's bothering me that's in every article and video is the statement that the men used the hammer and the women the knife. That is a complete conjecture as there is no way to know. It just bothers me that someone assumed and now everyone states it as fact. This is by far the best video I have seen today. The content is more thorough in the research presented and has put some stories to rest. Now I need to check out more from these creators.
😂 I'm so happy that you are resting today! I never heard of this case either! And I'm like you... I need to know more about these people and where did they go! I will go down the rabbit hole if needed! 😂✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼😂
I just acquired Susan Jonusas' book and am looking forward to reading it. I'm a little afraid I'm going to become obsessed because it's a very intriguing subject. I've spent the last several years trying to straighten out some of my familys' genealogy and history and hit many roadblocks. Many I've managed to straighten out, but its mind-boggling when James and Mary get married 200 years ago and have 12 kids and those 12 kids get maried to a James or Mary and name their 144 kids James and Mary etc... But I did manage to find out that my first ancestors here in NW Nebraska were not a bunch of horse thieves on the run. Just simple farmers, ranchers and loggers. Maybe not as exciting but they were decent people. I truly hope that someday the Bender story will be cleared up for you. It's a very interesting albeit morbid and sad subject, and what they did or didn't do has no reflection on you. Best of luck to you.
I knew some skaters out of Kansas with that name, they were eccentric characters but if any link it would be very old. It's a fairly common name in Germany... who knows if they had a large extended family could be all over the place!
It is uncertain where all of the victims were buried. Dr. York is buried in Independence, Kansas. Henry "Hank" McKenzie, and William McCrotty are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Parsons, Ks, in the Civil War Veterans's Circle. I have been to the burial sites of these three. George Newton Longcor and daughter were supposedly buried in a private cemetery on Longcor's in-laws property in Montgomery Co., Ks. Having visited the site, there are no clues as to it's location. Benjamin M. Brown is rumored to have been buried on the Bender Mounds after his wife identified him. At least one of the two unknown victims was possibly buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Labette County.
@shirleymiller4219 Yes. My Great, Great grandfather was part of a posse that killed them. I've been hearing family lore about this since the Sixties. My grandfather told me directly that his grandfather killed them...and my grandfather was a ZERO nonsense guy.
@shirleymiller4219 They are at the bottom of a lake that is close to where their wagon was found. They are currently excavating the Bender property, and my brother is involved in that process

The archaeological team will presenting their finds to date in Parsons, Ks Sept 28th.
Great job researching and telling this crazy story, guys! And as a librarian, I'd also like to thank you for the shout out to public libraries! 😊
I always heard that Pa Charles Ingalls was in the possy looking for the Benders.

I wonder if we’re related! We have a Jacob J. Bender in our family tree from about that time lol
GGGrandpa married Rosa Hoffman
My Grandpa told me he once stopped at a hotel in Kansas and was refused a room because his last name was Bender. One of his cousins married the infamous outlaw Al Jennings
I remember a military officer here in Gävle, Sweden. His family name was Bender.
That helps 😮😊😊😊

As an author of a new book on the Benders (Hell Comes to Play) due out this year, I would be interested in hearing of their story.
Me too

Loved it. Use of "miasma" was top shelf.
Nicely told!
Thanks!

How does this only have a few hundred views?
I like the Bents old Fort book on the shelf. I'm originally from southeast Colorado. Awesome 💯
Heck yeah! We’re from La Junta!
Yep I know exactly where that's at man. I used to compete in college bullriding for Lamar community College. That's my hometown.
This is very good video. Make more or else
The infamous outlaw John Wesley Hardin also told of his encounter with the Bender family. Narrowly eacaping with his life.
What about the Harpe brothers? They were operating a generation or more before the Benders and could certainly be considered serial killers?
We’re not familiar! We’ll check them out

So glad I found this on reddit
Did Kate Bender later become Kate Kelly of the infamous Kelly family? The tineline and location match.
As in The Kelly Gang from Northern Victoria, Australia?
So glad I found a video that goes through the exact rabbit hole i'm in haha
Lol nice last name homie
nice to meet some other benders in the comment haha
This is so interesting, but so creepy!
What became of the bodies of the victims. Were their relatives able to identify them and give them a proper burial?
Some bodies were claimed by kin, but the majority no!
They were reburied in a common mass grave at the base of Bender Mound.
It is uncertain where all of the victims were buried. Dr. York is buried in Independence, Kansas. Did you check the Claim files of the initial Claim ?
There were no original claims filed by the Benders. It is believed that the Benders were squatters on the land.
Was John Bender from The Breakfast Club any direct decendency of the Killer Bender’s.
this is a lot more interesting than a John Wayne ( barf) movie.
Kate Bender or Kelly most definitely got family somewhere... And umm if so yall granny bogus,
They didn't get away
I wouldn’t put money on that bet
@LeeRalph100
I'm not speculating.
I hope not. Have you been told anything?
@shirleymiller4219
Yes. My Great, Great grandfather was part of a posse that killed them. I've been hearing family lore about this since the Sixties. My grandfather told me directly that his grandfather killed them...and my grandfather was a ZERO nonsense guy.

They ran off and changed the family name to "Biden".
Hilaria, sorry Hilarious!
