There is a Laura Ingalls Wilder connection to this story. In 1937, at a Detroit book fair, she told of her family passing by the Bender place and that Kate Bender was standing in the doorway. The Ingalls couldn’t afford to pay for lodging so went on their way. After the bodies were found she related how a neighbor came by and, out of her and her sister’s hearing, spoke “earnestly” with Pa, (Charles Ingalls). He then took his gun down, and loaded it, telling his family “The vigilantes are called out”. He did not return until the next morning. When asked what happened to the Benders, he said, “with a strange tone of finality” that “They will never be found.”
@@Zoot_of_Anthrax They were nearby the area but at the wrong time. I heard Rose say her father had walked past the house but not at the same time period. I actually clicked just to see the real area because I loved Laura as a child. Rose seemed to be big on publicity and fitting her family story into what was popular at the time. Her original plan for 'Little House' was terrible, she wanted them more "folksy".
My 2x great granddad stayed there when he was traveling. He had settled in Chataqua County Kansas and had to haul lumber to build his house because there were no trees in the area he settled then. He was also a Marshal. He had a strange feeling about them and wouldn’t eat at their table. He left with his wagon in the very earthly morning. I still own his homestead.
That must be where Rob Zombie got his inspiration from for House of 1000 Corpses. I couldn't imagine running into not one but an entire family of serial killers like what are the odds. Wild.
The surname Bender is the Americanized version of the the German surname Fassbender along with several other German variations ending in “bender”. So it’s very likely the Benders did emigrate from Germany. That said, and just as Sommar noted, it’s also very possible the Benders were not actually blood relatives and more of a chosen family. This was fairly common back then when folks often died fairly young leaving their younger family members to live with family friends or distant relatives (frequently so distant that the relatives were essentially strangers). Also, if people wanted to try their luck in America, but they couldn’t convince family to move with them, people would join up with other travelers for safety and companionship. In the case of the Bloody Benders, I have often wondered if Kate was some sort of beautiful and charismatic spiritualist/tea leaf reader/psychic-medium who was basically a kind of cult leader. Perhaps she convinced the various “family members” of her value as a leader by first impressing them with her spiritualist parlor tricks. Perhaps she used cold readings (and other “psychic” trickery) to convince them she could talk to their dead loved ones or something similar. Then, once they were convinced enough to elevate her as their chosen one (or whatever they called her), Kate had them all move west; initially they went to take advantage of the cheap land. Then, once they settled in Kansas, Kate had them use their cover story of hardworking and trustworthy homesteaders who also run a little inn for travelers in order to get her money making scam up and profiting for them. They were such a strange group with very few similarities to distinguish them as blood relatives. I definitely feel something else was going on. Great work, Sommar!
I'm from germany and you're right about their name. A lot of people here have the last name Bender. But Kate and John are no german names and not common here in that time.
@@AchFrauJeMiNebut Katharina/Käthe and Johann/Johannes or something similar were for sure around. If they emigrated, they possibly americanised their names. Just a thought 😊

I think I heard of a similar case, I think it was on buzzfeed unsolved about a man and woman that were married that kill travelers and dump their bodies threw a trap door into the cellar. You might want to check it out, maybe it was 2 of the same people years later, cause how common would it be to kill travelers and have a trap door for their bodies? They were eventually hung for their crimes but the lady said that they would never hang a married lady, so they hung the husband first, so she wasn't married anymore, then they hung her. She even wore her wedding dress to her own hanging.
Still would love to see you do a deep dive on the Fred Tokars case in Atlanta back in the 90’s… it’s got everything from strippers and nightclubs to high-powered attorneys having their wives murdered in front of their children. It was awful.
This is one of the best coverages of this I've heard . Another youtuber covered this case and said that the Ingalls ( Little House On The Prairie ) Family had stopped here for an overnight stay but because they didn't have enough money to stay inside they had to sleep in their wagon instead (talk about dodging a bullet or rather a hammer ) . I love these old cases Sommer, your channel rocks ! . 👍👍
From what I've heard, they were involved in the case, but not as guests. Pa Ingalls might have been part of the vigilante group who murdered the family. He supposedly had gone out in the night with a bunch of armed men and came back in the morning, but they never talked about what they had done.

This case is strikingly similar to the case out of Charleston, SC from the early 1800's, about Lavinia Fisher, who was called "the first female serial killer in the United States." She and her husband had a little roadside inn and they did the same thing the Binders did. She was considered to be strikingly beautiful and very charming and she would use this to lure unwitting victims to their deaths. The Lavinia Fisher story would be a great one for your channel!

If any of you have ever read Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, there is a book by Pamela Smith Hill called Pioneer Girl. It mentions the Ingalls family stopping by the Bender home to water the horses. They didn't have enough money to stay there though, and it's a good thing they didn't or we would have never had those books. The book is about Laura's writing, and one of the stories that she tells is this story. Even as late as the 30s there were some of the members of the Bender family that had never been caught.
I have a suggestion or two about a couple of murderous moms. I saw both of these stories on Evil Lives Here. Mitchelle Blair, the Freezer Mom. She murdered two of her four children and stuffed their bodies into a freezer. Mary Rowles and her lesbian lover Alice Jenkins. Mary allowed Alice to abuse her children. Alice had two of them locked in a bedroom closet and she starved them. I would like to see you do stories on these monsters. Judith Hawkey. She abused her stepson Corey and made him shoot and kill his father by leading him to believe that his father had terminal cancer. All Judith wanted to do was collect on her husband's life insurance. It would be great if you consider doing one of these stories.

I'm so glad you covered this case. It's unbelievably creepy case, and I've seen few people cover it. I would highly suggest you do the New Orleans ax muderer case. I saw an episode on Mysteries at the Museum about it. Another old case. Apparently, there was an unknown ax murderer in N.O. who would demand people play a certain song and he wouldn't kill anyone. If they didn't comply, people were murdered. I can't remember all the details, but it was so scary it almost didn't sound real.
That is a great read. Mrs. York tells the story, like no other can. She goes through the depths of despair and and emotions and shares that journey with us. Her book was a valuable resource in my new book on the Benders.

I'm so stoked to spend spooky season with Sommer! Anything for alliteration! ;)
Thanks! CRAZY STORY!!! Love Your Videos. More Old Cases Please.
This might be my favorite of your videos so far. What an amazing story and mystery! Thanks for the great videos. Keep them coming.
I love your channel. Very well put together, researched and illustrated. Your a rarity on you tube and not different channels repeating the exact same story line. Thank you for the work and your time.
I was born in SW Kansas and my family goes back there since before the Civil War. My mom used to visit the Bloody Bender museum when she was a little girl 60 years ago. I would like to think a posse caught up with them and then buried their bodies after some frontier justice.
As a NE Kansan this story always resonated with me. I did not buy the accepted story though, which lead to a several year dive into Bender Research!
What do you think happened to them?@@HellComestoPlayBloodyBenders
Hey Sommer, thanks for the great story!! I always love when I get a notification that you dropped a new one!!
Love, LOVE when you talk about cults. Was really hoping to get some new ones. I really want to hear about "The Ant Hill Kids". That cult was absolutely terrifying to me when I was a bit younger. I dont know much about it and would love to hear more. I think a deep dive about the Ant Hill Kids and their leader Moses(Roch Thériault) would make for a great topic and even better listen!!! Thx very much! Hope I didnt send this comment to late!!!
Warning: That one is not for the faint-of-heart
I just discovered you and have binged all your episodes. I appreciate all the research you have put into your cases.
No one knew for sure that Dr. York was dead, but she offered Her services gave the red flag.
I just discovered this channel. It's the 2nd story in a row that I listened to. Very interesting! I like Sommer Sanchez's voice and way to tell stories. I have to admit that I really like her eyes ☺️
Always look forward to hearing my notifications that you've posted !! I truly appreciate your work!!!!! will always root for SOMER ❤❤😊 you &! Sherilyn are the best true crimers :
I am born, raised, and currently live in Kansas. There is so much more to the story. I csn email you more of the information if you would like? ❤❤❤And they were married and siblings.
Can you point me to the sources, please?
I’ve had a suspicion that they were investors siblings; was there occult involved as well?
Thanks in advance 🙏
@@maurverngallard4607 The Labette County Library may have documentation along with the historical society.
I remember your first vids , literally LOVE how you talk and explain everything. Makes my day when I see you posted
Your narration is my favorite! your matter-of-fact and straightforward way of speaking facts is refreshing
Except those edits are annoying, no pauzes between sentences, my brain hates it.
I love these old cases. Thanks Summer! Please do some more
Thanks Sommer! I am familiar with this case but your video is by far the most detailed I’ve heard about this family.
I love how you tell these stories in a respectful way
Hi Sommer :) I love history and watching true crime so this is perfect for me 💜 Thanks for all your hard work!
Hi from Australia, Sommer I've just finished binging on your channel I love your story telling it's hard to find a good true crime channel. Cheers
I’ve been with you since the beginning 🎉 I am so happy for you with the growth of your channel and it’s well deserved. You have found your calling in life ❤
I discovered this channel today. I like the old school vibe and it’s straight to the point
Thanks for your calm and respectful demeanor ❤😊
I freaking love this channel!! The older cases are my favorite! Thanks Sommer! 🤗
Idk why but lately I'm hooked on vintage true crime. It's so interesting and im also learning that people are always going to be people. It seems to be the same motives and heinous acts committed back then and now. 😕
The best presentation of this story I’ve ever heard. Well done !
You Christina & britney are like the best true crime story tellers .
You’re research into these old cases is incredible. I love them! I am fairly new to this channel, and so glad to have found it. You’re presentation is great. So easy to listen to, and the content is always great, even the cases I’ve heard before. ❤
this is the most informed and detailed version of this story that i've ever heard.
You are amazing I first heard of this story on Deadly Women but you definitely went above and beyond with your research definitely raised the bar
Really love cases that happened before 20th centuries they just hit different and you narrate it so well new subscriber❤
I recommended this story to the True Crime youtubers. However you got the tip, thank you for doing it. Such violence in boring old Kansas!
The Axe Man of New Orleans! That was his moniker.
Hi Sommer, great coverage of this horrific historic crime! Thx for sharing the book, "The Bender Tragedy". It's now on my "to read" list!🖤
That is a great read. Mrs. York tells the story, like no other can. She goes through the depths of despair and and emotions and shares that journey with us. Her book was a valuable resource in my new book on the Benders.
I Heard of this Case Before...and I really Enjoy OLD TIME CASES.
DID YOU DO A CASE ON H.H. HOLMES, JACK THE RIPPER, LIZZIE BORDEN?
THANKS SO MUCH SOMMER FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK.
PAMELA
Another amazing 1 , thanks so much sommer . ❤ each time u upload , my cosmos improves 🎉

You’re always so through with these old, notorious cases that I get extremely excited to revisit them, knowing I’m going to get more information than usual.
I never liked true crime stuff and here I am, binging all your content. You're the best.

Have you done a video about the Cottage Incident in the Czech Republic involving a cult called The Mauerova Cult Family?
I really like old cases from like the 1700's or before. Idk why it just seems so interesting
I just found your video. You do a fantastic job on telling these stories. Keep sharing.
So glad I saw and listened to this. It really held my interest.
