    • @motchev
      @motchev 5 дней назад

      It's funny how we've evolved with the technology. As a youngster I'd blithely wander off into the bush for days without mobile or GPS. Or travelling it would: oh there's a payphone, should call home. Yet as a parent we've just had our 17 year old go overseas for the first time. Organised sport tour, nothing wild. But I was the sookiest nervous nell. Surely she should be back in wifi range to check in any minute now! @@KateGrarock

    • @motchev
      @motchev 5 дней назад

      If it doesn't feel too 'paid promotion' it would be good to hear your view of the options. My barely researched take so far is that the Garmin has slightly better functionality, but the Zoleo is cheaper to maintain especially if you don't get out a lot (can suspend subscription).

    • @KateGrarock
      @KateGrarock 5 дней назад

      yeah it’s strange. I once heard it described as - remember when we would write a letter, post it and then wait for the reply. I now get an email from a workmate, who then calls and texts to discuss the email. There has got to be a middle ground.

    • @KateGrarock
      @KateGrarock 3 дня назад

      @@motchev I’ve not used the Inreach but I use the garmin gpsmap and I hate the background setup - it’s clunky and a bit confusing. Not what you want in an emergency device. I found Zoleo much easier. But if I was you I’d workout what features you want eg breadcrumb tracking is extra $8 a month. I like this feature as if I loose it or I fall off a cliff my last known location will be known by my family. My Zoleo phone number never changes so my friends and fam can save me as Kate Zoleo in their phones. Apparently the garmin number can change. Zoleo can put subscription on hold for 4$ per month. I was extremely impressed with connectivity on my Zoleo in a gorge. Zoleo basic with tracking is $40 and garmin is the same if you want tracking. There is a cheaper garmin plan without tracking. Not sure about garmin but I can also check the weather at my location or at a point I selected in the map. Great for gorge country I could check 150km away at the top of the catchment. Zoleo also have a thing called medical assist it’s an advisory service provided by Global Rescue. It provides subscribers with easy access to advice from medical professionals. Haven’t tested it but thought it could be a nice intermediate step to pushing sos.

    No. I never got that kind of flow. It ran fast initially but after two or three uses the flow rate was seriously slowed. Yes I back flushed multiple times. People often don't discuss how the water practically needs to be pristine already in order to filter. I spent 20 to 30 minutes to filter 3 liters of water until finally I said screw this, yeah weight is a precious commodity but so is time out there on the trails. I broke down and bought the MSR Guardian, toss a tube over the bank never having to get wet and super charge that same 3 liters in 3 minutes flat and the water is completely excised of viruses which the Sawyer does not do. Its friggin junk and inexplicably everyone puffs it up. It's a $40 filter and it functions like a $40 filter. Garbage

    Hi Kate, wondering what size pack you used? I’m still planning on doing the Lara but looking at next year now. I have planned to do it over 21 days but I’m wondering if I’m being too ‘cautious’ if you know what I mean? I’m of average fitness (a work in progress), have only done one other multi-day hike last year but didn’t have to carry my gear. Can you tell me what your itinerary was? Thanks Kate and well done on all that you do. You have helped me already so much.

    • @KateGrarock
      @KateGrarock 19 дней назад

      Mate love love it. It’s so hard to judge the difficulty of a hike from reading online stuff hey. I remember being really nervous. 21 days is a touch slow but I did some short days and enjoyed chilling / exploring around camp so you can do whatever you want. The biggest difficulty with taking that long is you will need to carry a lot of food. Food is heavy. After food drops your pack is heavy and that’s when I felt less agile and had more difficulty covering the distance/ bounding over rocks. The biggest trick with the Larapinta is to drink heaps of water and electrolytes and start hiking super super early - almost in the dark. This way you can avoid the extreme heat and hot sun. So keep the fluids up. Make sure your footwear works for you. I recommend wrightsocks they are blister free. My pack was 45 l it was great I have a vid on my gear What's in my pack? ruclips.net/video/KK_rjlnBs4o/видео.html and a new one coming out soon. I also have a lot of food vids. With a year to go and some good planning you will have a ball. I recommend al lot of hill walking with your pack on. Happy to chat more

    You were spoilt with that divine dinner of lamb chops and homemade gourmet salad. The sound of the birds first thing in the morning sounded so beautiful. Thanks for sharing Kate.

    If that's where I think it is the fires have certainly hepled with the scrub bashing. A couple of times I've headed off that trail just to get a glimpse into the Gorge and given up due to impenetrable scrub. And that's even using satellite images to hop between clearings! Have you read Paddy Pallin's book "Never Truly Lost"?

      So cool. Yeah some bits are better than others. I haven’t read it but I have read accounts of their amazing crossing of this gorge back before proper transport, sat images and maps. Would have been such an adventure back then. Cheers

      Yes the highs and lows of it hey. The lamb certainly made the lost zoleo hurt less.

    I did a trip to the northern point across the valley from you last year, and it was just as brutal from the looks! Those fires have really invigorated the bushland. Totally worth it though, it was one of my favorites!

    I enjoyed the food series but it's good to see you back on (er, off!) track. So pretty on the cliff tops. And 'You didn't buy it from Ainslie IGA' really tickles my funny bone.

    What an amazing cliff top campsite Kate. I think Ive watched a vid of yours before from this same area? If the Zoleo is waterproof, you may find it on another trip out there?

    another nice one Kate . those fires of 2020 make for some hard going bush bashing these day . I think the pink tags are a good thing , keeps the human activity localised rather than carving new paths and treading on delicates everywhere . amazed how much this looks like the blue mtns although i think its further south going by some of the plant species i saw ?

    • @KateGrarock
      @KateGrarock Месяц назад

      Yeah it was very rough in sections. Yes I think I agree re flagging but I have seen some places where they have gone overboard. I wonder who is doing some of it. I know Parks and hiking groups do a bit but this area is not very popular and it would take a long time to mark and there was a lot of twigs cut - would have taken hours of not days. but yes having a clear small path is much better than everyone trampling vegetation all over the area. Yep we were down in Morton NP. love that park but im so keen to get up north sometime too.

    Awesome video Kate. That campsite, dinner and campfire looked amazing. Jules is a camping masterchef!! Such a bummer about the Zoleo. I'll add a 2nd clip to mine I think. Glad to hear you replaced it. PS loved the vivos making an appearance 😊
