A Dartmoor Adventure
In September, hoping for an Indian summer, I set off for a 5 day hike around Dartmoor with two friends. We all love backpacking and are all similarly suited with regards to fitness levels. Sadly, whilst we did enjoy some dry weather, we found ourselves in a yellow weather window for wind and rain. Our hike became challenging in strong winds and our backpacking skills were tested ensuring that we kept vital equipment dry day after day.
This video captures our clockwise journey that started and finished in Okehampton.

On 13th April 2024, South Wales LDWA Group is hosted a 50-mile walking event that had to be completed within 24 hours. There was also a 30-mile option and over 2 days, my friend Andrew and I walked the 30-mile loop and checked the route description that had been written to help the entrants navigate their way around the course. We camped high for one night in the Black Mountains before continui...

Thanks for your video. The valleys look so peaceful and beautiful. My great great grandfather at 21 left his family farm in the Valley in 1864 and emigrated to Australia. They named a family house in my home town "Rhondda" so I guess he thought fondly of his homeland and undoubtedly missed the area as well as his family.
I walked from Los Angeles to Barnet north London in a pair of these, apart from 20 resoles and 8 new uppers they’ve been brilliant, oh and I’ve replaced the laces 15 times
Sounds like Trigger's Broom!!! Great description!!

Just watched all of your Cambrian Way adventure, and got to say that was fantastic and enjoyed every episode. FairPlay to you that is a long route and you made it look easy, might have to do this myself 😁 as we live in Cardiff we aren’t that far from the start of it, ATB Mark & Simon .
Thank you so much for not just watching but also taking the time to comment. If you do take on the Cambrian Way you're bound to enjoy it as I did. You'll be tired at the end though!!
@@morgs4mountains it looks very tiring, would you say the Rhinogs is the hardest part? We’ve done four of the summits there and the terrain is very tough.
By far. Slow going from the two Rhinogs and very tiring for sure. But, the most satisfying part of the whole trip for sure.
Another great video - thank you Dave
Thank you so much Janet. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. It was a fun but challenging trip!!
Fair play you changed your pronunciation at 15;32
I used to live in Aberystwyth and knew the pronunciation. Don't quite know as to how I had mid-pronounced at the start to be honest. Thanks for highlighting the fact and my correct pronunciation later in the video.
hi, just a tip... it's not Cwm istwyth....ystwyth is pronounced like the last syllable in butter....like the word rust but without the r same applies for Aber ystwyth ...Aber (ust) wyth lots of people make this mistake....hope this helps you
Ah the fickle UK weather. I guess I hit the same yellow weather warning as you. Shame you did not get some better days. I have only been to Dartmoor once, to do a mountain marathon, and I didn't see anything for two days. Looks an interesting area with some great wild camping spots by the tors. Thanks for taking us along. Pain au Chocolat for breakfast ? That's nearly as bad as Dave Goodman taking his pajamas. Oh, and I remember you asking what I filmed on. GoPro10. No worries about it getting wet !
In my defence, it was one of those piddly little ones from Aldi, but decadent in a tent nonetheless. Thanks for info re GoPro10. I was more interested in how you process on the trail. Assuming that you transfer data from SD card to your phone and then use App to process? I am going to treat myself later this year to a GoPro as the wind issues on the phone are almost impossible to manage. Assuming you've finished the CW now? I check every day to see whether you've uploaded!
I thought you wanted to stay alone on your island
Which island? Sorry, I don't understand.
Even when covered by fog or mist the valleys are a magical place
More so when you're on the mountain and above the cloud! The magic of a cloud inversion never fails to excite me!
Very envious to see others out walking, still not able to get out myself!
Hopefully you'll get there soon Rob. Andy Parker is a great physio and I'm sure he's put you on the right track. You'll be like a wound up spring when you're set loose!!
Hard weather punctuated by lovely brightness on those beautiful moors, thank you for filming it. Struck me that it's increasingly unusual to see people battling with paper maps in the wind and rain!
Two of the old guard are Andrew and Jason Catherine!! Whikst both have GPS units, they like to keep their skills going! I was happy to follow and film for a change! Thanks for dropping by!
That looked a testing couple of days Dave. When the weather was good though glad to say you managed to capture some cracking footage of Dartmoor.. an area unfamiliar to me = think the only Tor I have visited has been Haytor - Deb & I walked up there years ago when we was on one of our away trips to Exeter. Have to say it looks bleak, but none the less beautiful. I see Jason & Andrew didn't bother with the long trousers, tough pair...lol. Good watch as always. atb Al
I'm a bit surprised to read that you don't know Dartmoor as well. I thought youight have ventured down with photography in mind. Some of the tors are very photogenic for sure. Yes, skin is waterproof I guess re Jason and Andrew. 😂 Lots more opportunities from what I can see re multi day trips to Dartmoor.
I recognise a few locations, being born and raised in Okehampton. Shame the weather wasn't the best, the moor can certainly be a bleak place. Great video as always.
What a fabulous place to have been raised Kev. I can understand your love of the hills as you were brought up on them. I loved the concept of a 5 day trip from your town and I see many more opportunities too.
What a pleasure on a wet Sunday afternoon to stay indoors and watch you battle the elements. I’ve just spent 3 good days camping and walking in the Peak District and now watching another of your wonderful adventures has left me wanting to get out again. All of the people I’ve camped with over recent months really just do it for the nights camping which I’ve found difficult to understand as for me like yourself it’s all about the journey. Thanks Dave for another great video. 👌👍🙏🍻😊
I'm glad that I brightened up your day Dave. I know exactly what you mean with regards to some wild campers. The sleeping in the tent and associated chores are what they desire. I love the freedom that backpacking gives me. I can explore an area, a route and when I want to stop, put my tent down and sleep. Then move on and do it again. I'm with you on that aspect of what we love doing.
Thank you for sharing your epic journey with us, enjoyed every minute of it 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much Sheena. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed watching the series.
Great videos of the Lycian & really helpful as I'm doing Kas to Antalya in October. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. I'm so pleased that my effort with regards to making videos on the Lycian Way from Ovacik to Antalya have helped with your own preparation. You'll love the journey. We certainly did!
A fabulous adventure Dave, thanks for taking us a long. They were a full on last two days and the descent down to Conwy looks great. It will be nice to walk over those hills again. I'm about to start the second half tomorrow. I can appreciate the challenge of doing this route in one trip, but also the rewards that come with that too. Next adventure ?
Thanks Andy and thank you for supporting my series. The weather is beginning to settle so perhaps we'll get that settled period that will make the conclusion of your CW so enjoyable. I am already looking forward to seeing your videos. As for what's next? Flights booked for France next year so a jaunt around the GR54 with 2 friends beckons. I'm nibbling at Scandinavia too. One last backpacking video for the year comes out next week from a 5 day trip to Dartmoor that I enjoyed. Good luck on the trail!
Ohh well done Dave and I hugely appreciate you sharing this trip it’s been fantastic to watch. Best meal, well I agree there, we had a great night in the Red lion. I loved your stories in this final episode. Congratulations on all those 2000 ft hills in England and wales that’s an achievement. You’re certainly a keen hiker and an inspiration Dave. Although I have been over the Glyders many times the weather for us last year was very bad and the terrain up there was extremely confusing and very slippery, we could not get on the cantilever stone. This route and the cape wrath trail are my best hiking achievements with the CW being a lot tougher but the CWT raises more emotions. Thank you so much Dave and ATB 🙏🍻
Thank you so much Dave. To be called inspirational is so nice. I don't see myself that way at all, but when someone says it it's impossible not to smile. I have never thought about the Cape Wrath Trail although I know it forms a large part of the Scottish National Trail that I have considered. The joys of hiking is that there are so many trails to choose from. We're blessed to enjoy the hobby that we do. Thanks for supporting my series.
Fantastic conclusion to the walk. Stunning scenery captured with a photographers eye as always. It does look like a long distance trail well worth doing. I always enjoy passing a way marker when wandering around South Wales and pondering if I'll ever do the whole trail one day.
Never say never Kev. The trail and the mountains will always be there. If you ever decide to embark on the adventure, it will be one to savour. Thanks for supporting my series by watching and commenting.
Congratulations. Fabulous trek.
Thank you very much Paul and thanks for commenting.
Thank you so much for your videos of the Cambrian Way, I've enjoyed every one. I look forward to the next trek!
Thank you so much for watching them all and following my journey and then taking the time to comment. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the videos.
Fantastic trek. Really enjoyed every video.
You're so kind to say so. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed following my journey. Thanks so much.
Absolutely stunning, we are so very lucky in Wales to have such beauty on our doorstep. Thanks again David, your videos are always brilliant.
My, what generous feedback to receive. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the videos as you followed my journey. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thanks for the effort and skill to provide an excellent entertaining record of your achievements, certainly inspiring and despite being a good bit older than you, a trip i think i need to do whilst i still can. Keep up the good work, looking forward to see what comes next.
To be described as inspiring is truly lovely. Thank you for watching. That you have taken pleasure from my videos has really pleased me.
Wonderful trek and great finish 👍
Thank you so much. It was a truly great trip although the ending is always rather anticlimactic! Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Great video clip Morgs, thanks for sharing, we've spent years hiking and exploring in Wales and its always nice to see new places like this that we could visit, we've subscribed :) look forward to seeing more of your content in the future also 👍
Thank you so much for not just subscribing but also taking the time to comment. I'm not a prolific video maker although I do hope that you can find pleasure in other videos I've made. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Congratulations! Thank you for posting the inspirational videos. Look forward to seeing your next adventure.
Thank you for describing the videos as inspirational. I am really pleased to read that comment. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my videos.
Congratulations David! Well done. You've inspired me to take a closer look at The Cambrian Way. Maybe in sections though, I don't think I'd be able to have 3 weeks annual leave for it!
You certainly won't regret nibbling at the CW. I didn't for years due to my familiarity with it in the southern section. But, I'm so glad that I have now walked it and I hope that you enjoy it when you explore it.
A great achievement and a wonderful route. Many thanks.
Thank you so much for your generous comment. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the video.
Congratulations on a fantastic achievement and a couple of days quicker than if following the suggested daily stages. Have really enjoyed watching this series and living in South Wales I am very tempted to complete at least the bottom half of this journey next year. The last couple of days had some big climbs but you seemed to be floating on air coming to the end. Enjoy your coffee's and couple of day's rest and I look forward to your next expedition. 😀
You won't regret exploring the route if you decide to do so. Thank you so much for your generous comment. I'm really pleased that you have watched and enjoyed the video.
Great video Dave 😊 thank you for going to all the trouble to make it 🎉
Hey, you're very, very welcome. It has documented a wonderful trip and captured some of the challenges I think.
Another great section Dave. I am looking forward to doing the Rhinogs traverse, I have done sections before but never in one go. Looked like a couple of excellent wild camps along the way but £22 is taking the mickey for a campsite. Nearest I had to that was £35 for me and Judith (one tent ) on the Scottish National Trail. Totally get your shorter day to Beddgelert. 50mph is no fun. Looking forward to the last section. 👍
Thanks so much. I really hope that you get decent weather when you return this month. The northern section of the CW is absolutely delightful but would be tedious in tricky weather. Thanks for watching and I hope it has helped you understand what awaits you.
16:16 Ignore the cholesterol in the food you eat; dietary cholesterol has ZERO influence on blood levels. It's yet another of many food myths that have no basis in truth or science. As for a fried breakfast (the traditional "Full English" etc.), it has been proven, time and again, to be just about the healthiest start to the day you can have. If you pile in the carbs (porridge, cereal, bread etc.) your energy levels will be all over the place, with insulin/sugar spikes and crashes. Keep the protein high, and you'll feel (and do) much better...trust me! I'm 57, I have a blended 5-egg shake (in 500ml of milk) for breakfast, then do some work (I work from home), then go to the gym...5 times a week...then, I have a steak mid-afternoon, not long after the gym. I may have some SMALL carb snacks a little later, then another 5-egg shake in the evening. I have never eaten so few carbs, and so much protein, in my life...and my weights in the gym are as high (or higher) than they were in my 20s or 30s, my recovery is faster & more complete than ever (I have never ached so little, the day after a hard workout), and my energy levels are constant all day. I never felt this good before. I also walk several miles, maybe twice a week (usually over the Gower). So, if it works for me, at 57, there must be something to it!
So interesting and at odds with what others say. I did note the breakfast that you have and I can absolutely see the benefit of that. Everything in moderation is what they say but you're clearly reaping the benefits of your scientific understanding on the benefits of protein. I'll read more on this subject. Thanks so much for the detailed comment.
I’m still keeping up with how it went for you Dave. ATB 🙏🍻
Thanks Dave. Yes, it's turned into an epic with these weekly releases and I hope you're still able to enjoy the videos.
Captured it really well as always. A couple of tough days on the legs but some rewarding pitches and swims. Looking forward to the final part, although I'll miss the regular content.
It was the toughest section of the CW as I expected it to be. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video and are looking forward to the finale. There is some fabulous scenery to come!
Your video brought back some good memories of walks I've done and searches for Gold DofE teams in the areas you were walking. I agree entirely with your assessment of The Rhinogs - hard underfoot (and dangerously slippery in some places where there is continual drainage) but a great experience all the same. Enjoyed the video very much.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and for commenting too. I'm pleased that I was able to provide memories for your visits to the wonderful area.
Another great episode, didn’t think you sounded negative but understandably tired after a very hard day on a very long trek!
Thank you Lee. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the video and for appreciating my tiredness at the time.
@@morgs4mountains Under those circumstances my tiredness would have rolled over into something more than potentially negative. I think as well that hiking alone can be so good for clearing the mind and soul but also lonely and dispiriting without someone to bounce off or laugh off some of the days that are hard, wet and miserable. Keep up the good work.
Ah, many thanks.
Am really enjoying following you on this awesome walk, noting the increasing wildness of the mountains, not to mention the increasing need for calories! Since Covid the backpacker rate for campsites really seems to have gone up, not everywhere but in many places; £20 is not unusual.
Thanks so much Catherine. I'm so pleased that you're following the journey and that it's enjoyable for you too. The backpacker rate irked me because it means that you don't get a pitch and are given a patch of grass somewhere on the site. Usually it attracts a few of about a tenner. I do understand the price hike since Covid but to be £12 more and for less facilities than normal irked me!!
Great video Dave - the Teifi Pools are particularly stunning
Hi Stu. Agreed. They have a wonderful and often bleak beauty. They can often look foreboding but in fine weather they sparkle!!
Beautiful footage of the trek. I am looking at doing it myself soon. What did you do to get visa permits to cross all three countries? Did you use a service?
Thank you so much for watching my videos and taking the time to comment. I used a service to get my permit and the process was very quick. I'd recommend it. www.zbulo.org/services/border-crossing-permits-peaks-of-the-balkans-via-dinarica/#:~:text=How%20many%20permits%20do%20I,overnight)%20no%20permit%20is%20required.
Nice campspot ! I'm looking forward to this section the most. I have many fond childhood memories of this area and I am looking forward to going back. Cadair Idris was my first ever mountain climbed aged 13 so doing a full traverse of it is high on my list. Thanks for taking us along. 👍👍
You're in for a real treat although I think you said that you were returning in Sept so maybe you're already on trail. That section and the Rhinogs were so satisfying. I hope you get the kind of weather that I did. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Enjoyed it so much i came back for another look. Actually, sat watching in the car whilst Deb in gaving a dexa scan in Pontypool 😊 That pitch was something else, you deserved it after doing 18 miles.. and the Welsh cake. 😂
The Welsh Cakes!! Fuel of the Gods!!! 😂 Thanks for returning mate!
One of the finest pitches I've seen and the kind of conditions that elevates it further. Wonderful leg this one, the mountain views and inversion, beautiful. Glad you had such cracking walking conditions for it and you were able to enjoy clear views.
Yes, it was absolutely perfect. Indeed, there was arguably a better one but I would have had to place my tent with door on side with cliff and a sheer drop down to ground below. I feared sleep walking!! 😂😂 The compromise was a fine spot indeed!!
Fantastic and well done👌🏕️🍻
Thanks Dave.
Thanks Dave, you’re an inspiration. I’m loving following along and makes me want to get out there again. ATB 🏕️😊🙏🍻
Thanks Dave. But, it was your video that helped save me even more dreadful terrain coming down from the wind farm. So pleased that you're enjoying watching my journey!
@@morgs4mountains cheers, yes I do recall saying why not just come straight down that hillside in my video. That was a horrible bit for sure. 👍
Another fascinating vlog Dave. I must admit I never knew there were bothies in Wales. I’ve only ever used the Scottish ones. Looks like a good one, too.
Hi Adam. There are 3 bothies in the Elenydd. All are in fabulous condition and the Elan Estate keeps them stocked with dry seasoned wood and firelighters too. Very comfortable places to stay! Thanks for supporting the series by commenting!
Cheers Dave. Got me itching to get going again. That section down past the reservoirs looks great and thanks for the heads up on the shortcut after the windfarm. Bracken is a nightmare to walk through, even worse when it is wet and it soaks through everything. As for calories, definitely correct. It is a challenge to keep the food intake enough on these trips.👍👍
It is a very pretty section and I did enjoy it but it was probably the toughest terrain. Fair play to @davegoodman for the recommendation and it will save even more of the tedious difficult ground when you take it. I'm looking forward already to seeing your interpretation of the rest of the CW that I've now walked. Thanks for supporting this series of videos!
Good job on those overgrown sections. I did a 15km trial today at the southern edge of the Brecon's and the ferns have invaded the tracks there as well. Can only imagine how bad those low traffic paths would be.
Yep, thanks very much. Mid Wales has a fearsome reputation for very overgrown paths in certain locations and the bit between Commins Coch and Dinas Mawddwy was particularly bad whilst being beautiful at the same time. Thank you so much for your comment on the video!
When food is definitely fuel, and much needed! Back from having a sense of humour failure myself in mid-Dorset trying to follow overgrown and disappearing paths. Guess we just have to walk them to keep them accessible.
That's exactly right, combined with a landowner sense of pride in keeping public rights of way open on their land. I'd see thst responsibility as a privilege, sadly, others don't! Thanks for taking the time to comment on the video!
I can only imagine how bad some of the sections are in such a remote area. I completed the Raven Walk on Friday and sections of that were head high bracken with occasional brambles thrown in. Great watch as always.
I haven't done the full Ravens walk for a while. But, it's always bracken bound. Did you go anti clockwise? If so you'd have gone up the 'spiteful' from Newbridge and that is a tough, tough climb!!! Thanks for supporting this series of videos!!
@@morgs4mountains yeah I did it anti clockwise starting at Mynnydislwyn and doing the final climb back up through the forest and ending at the church.
That's the 'spiteful' that you finished on. Tough, tough finish. Well done!!
