The Anglian Flaneur-Exploring London and Beyond
Великобритания
Добавлен 26 май 2021
What is a Flaneur? Flaneur is a French term for a type of urban male or female "stroller", "lounger", "saunterer", or "loafer". I prefer the term "stroller". That's what I do. Please join me on my travels.
My main focus is London, where I work and was born and raised. Occasionally, I will venture into the towns and villages of East Anglia, which is where I now live. I love East Anglia. Also, I will film my football team Ipswich Town from time to time. Wild swimming and cricket are passions also. But, my heart is 100% London-its history, its streets, its people, its buildings and its business! Berlin also appeals.
At work, and in my lunch break, I will wander out into the streets of London with no fixed destination other than a number of loose plans. I try and summon up the spirit of the Flaneur, observing what is around me. East, West, North or South and the City of London. I try and avoid the Tourist hotspots. Every street in London has a story to tell! That's my motto!

Shadwell and Limehouse walk in London's East End
Today I'm in London's East End again walking along The Highway visiting Limehouse and Shadwell. The Highway is infamous for the Ratcliffe murders, and had a reputation for crime, poverty and deprivation. We need to bypass that for awhile and look at the area in terms of London's story. This is an area associated with the River Thames and the London Docks. Shadwell Basin and Limehouse Basin were significant contributors to this story.
The area was full of Mariners, Dockers and people associated with maritime trade. I visit the famous Prospect of Whitby that resonates with many locals, visitors and tourists as synonymous with Maritime London.

Fetter Lane stroll in City of London
Просмотров 8914 дней назад
Today I'm on the western edges of the City of London exploring Fetter Lane and New Fetter Lane. This is a street with many stories and connections to the legal and armoury professions. The start of the walk is at one of the City's busiest junctions where you look eastward to the valley of the Fleet and westwards to Covent Garden and the West End. It descends downwards towards the Thames and Fle...
Female gladiator and Great Dover Street
Просмотров 8621 день назад
Today I'm back in South London and walking down Great Dover Street. This is a street that links Borough High Street to Bricklayers Arms which is a main junction for South East London. I see great housing estates on old Saxon mounds, old jam factories, great pubs. However, my imagination is tweaked with the supposed discovery of the grave and remains of a female Roman Gladiator. The claim is con...

Great Suffolk Street walk in South London
Просмотров 9528 дней назад
Today I'm back in South London discovering an historic street off the famous Borough High Street. This is a street that takes its name from the former historic residence of the Dukes of Suffolk. On John Rocque's Map in the mid-eighteenth century it is shown as Dirty Lane while its northern section continued to be known as Gravel Lane. During the English Civil War the Lines of Communication fort...
City to King's Cross with a Shane MacGowan edge

Today I'm walking from High Holborn on the edge of the City of London to King's Cross along the famous Gray's Inn Road. This is a road that has a history going back nearly 800 years and is named after and location of one of England's four famous Inns of Court. But, that's just the start of our journey! As I walk along Gray's Inn with frequent detours I see the former home of arguably England's ...
Dick Whittington and City of London

We're in Panto season so why not walk through the street where London's most famous Mayor lived. We're near the River Thames and the course of the River Walbrook between Upper Thames Street and Cannon Street. We look at the famous City church associated with Whittington and some of the surrounding areas like Queen Street Place and Cloak Lane. The end of the walk is close to Cannon Street Statio...
West Ham United, new housing and the Boleyns
Просмотров 210Месяц назад
Join me as I walk down Green Street from Upton Park tube station to visit a famous statue that celebrates England's World Cup win of 1966. However, the main thrust of our walk is the visit to West Ham United's old football ground and where they played for 112 years between 1904 and 2016. The old Boleyn ground, with connections, though contested, to Anne Boleyn is now home to over 800 dwellings....
City walk with the feel of Xmas in the air

I'm walking around the City of London on a late November Thursday evening. Thursday evenings in the City are the new Fridays. People tend to work from home on a Friday. Some of them are even nursing a hangover whilst phoning into Teams calls, eating a sausage sandwich! So Thursday evenings have a special atmosphere, and with it being Xmas office party season, the place is buzzing! The City with...

Today, I've started where the famous punk venue (The Nashville Rooms) held gigs from the Sex Pistols, The Jam, Siouxsie and the Banshees to Joy Division, Human League and Dr Feelgood. Now, its the Famous Three Kings. I move onto Gunter Grove via Earl's Court and Brompton Cemetery to view No.45 where John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) lived. I finish off on the King's Road to view its most iconic pr...

Today I'm visiting St Paul's in the City of London.. I've filmed St Paul's on numerous occasions walking nearby streets, but have never filmed inside. This is indeed an iconic London, British and World landmark building. Today we can see view the fourth St Pauls on this site, the previous one being burnt down in 1666 by the Fire of London. The first St Paul's (the Church on the hill (Ludgate)) ...

Thanks John. Lovely comment.
I was born in Ironmonger St, 1947 the area you are showing was our play places! Thank you for showing, that tree in the church with lots of bumps is engrained on my memory!
Thanx so very much.I look forward to your vlogs. You present such historical content some of which I vaguely know and most I don’t or have forgotten. You work in absolutely my favorite area of London.
I especially love the little nature reserves along the way
Always appreciate you sharing your lunch hour with us.
Crikey, this will show my age, but I had a stall under the flyover in what must have been about '72, selling brickabrack (?),when you could sell a piece of Clarice Cliff for a fiver and still make a profit.......
Thanks Keith. That's a wonderful story.
I have remembered that Biddie and Eve were the cabaret gig that night, (what a memory) do you know of them? Unfortunately I can't find any exact dates for them. Anyway, probably doesn't matter as I have no idea of your age.
Thanks Keith, another great story. I was a couple of years too young for the Blitz. Plus I spent most of my teenage years ploughing up and down a swimming pool when I should have been at punk gigs. Making up for it now.
Very nice walk. The old Mitre Tavern like a good place to stop.looks
Really like your vids of Bude canal - I live in Salisbury, but try to get down to the canal at least once a year. In connection with one of your others, I remember when I lived in London, being thrown out of Blitz once, not sure what for, in early 80's.
Thanks Keith. I aim to walk the Bude canal this year. Love the Blitz story. Best way to remember it.
Don’t we all kno about the January work routine Great day here in the snow in the US of A to catch up on some reading and your vlog You have a great creative mind.
In the bitterly cold weather we're currently experiencing, I can sit at home and vicariously glide 'round fascinating parts of London by watching videos like this. Thank you AF.
I so enjoyed your walk.Never met too many beers in London I didn’t like.
Always a treat Guess you are back at work Happy New Year to you and your wife. The only way to see London in my opinion is to walk it.
You did so good with Dickens It is appropriate at times like Christmas.I forget he wrote that too .I have been to the house but don’t remember it very well. This was quite enjoyable and I wonder where you will go next. Thanks again and I think you work in a wonderful area.
I must say I have bought a few things there in my life

So much energy in this vlog wonderful Looks like Christmas lights and trees on your walk I know this part better than some I have seen Vivienne’s Westwoods grave and some of her funeral and I walked down the Thames to Blackfriar’s bridge and took a right to the Earls Court area to the Brampton Rd.and Cohlherne Court where Princess Diana spent her earlier years Thanx again this was great.

You have done a most magnificent job in capturing this most famous church to me in the entire world .I remember eating in the crypt and my daughter named her dogs Nelson and Wellington .THIS CHURCH HONORS THEM WELL AND YOU PAID GREAT HOMAGE TO THEM Glad it was raining out the day you did this.
