    Problem with the current ruck law is how against counter rucking it is . Any slight interference and boom penalized . I believe the previous was that it was contestable until either team counter rucks or the ball doesnt come out but now if a ruck is formed ball is visible than its done

      The purpose of a scrum is to restart play with a contest for possession after a minor infringement or stoppage. Minor infringement are like a knock-on or forward pass. The team who did not make this error gets to throw the ball into the scrum.

      @ckush928 somewhat, there has to be an advantage to the team putting the ball in the scrum. There are a lot of nuances though. For example if the pressure is on the attacking scrum the ball is messy for the backs which makes it harder for the attack from the scrum to occur. It also means the loose forwards are on the back foot which impairs 'go forward'. The angle which the scrum moves is also important. A solid attacking scrum normally wants the ball angled towards the backline which moves the offside line (making it harder for the defending openside flanker) while also providing a better line for the initial pass from half back to first five. There are lots of subtleties. Being a dominant scrum is also a huge moral booster for the forwards in general. Forwards and trying to dominate physically throughout the game, and the is a large part of that. I could go on but these of some of the basics. If you're interested you should watch a number of high level games and it will make more sense.

    • @rugbybasics4269
      @rugbybasics4269 6 месяцев назад

      In rugby league, the scrum is more about restarting play quickly, so players bind together and the ball is put into the scrum without pushing. In rugby union, the scrum is more of a contested set piece, so there's a push to try to gain possession of the ball. It's a difference in the rules and focus of the two sports.

      Hi! I understand most things about the scrum now but I do have a very basic question. Once crouch bind set is done and the ball is chucked into the tunnel - what happens to the ball? NRL scrums used to push & hookers contest the feed but they were a bit of a dogs breakfast. they changed the laws re contested scrums & no longer being able for the defender to strike at the play the ball. Having said tha i don't think it is illegal not to push in a scrum as from time to time one team will push the other side off the ball, more like a gentlemans agreement not to push. The advantage of still doing it is for 1 play - all of the forwards are in a tight bunch that gives the backs some freedom & more space

    Over and again in video examples we see players joining the ruck, that is slamming an opposing player, without attempt to bind FIRST with a player on one's own side. That at the very least should be known as a "shoulder charge" which wouldn't be allowed in a tackle where presumably the to be tackler player had some defense ie he saw the tackle coming or he could fend or prepare for contact. Not so a player engaged in a ruck who is then targeted by a charge by a player "joining the ruck". If he is not first bound, or doing so "simultaneously" he is NOT "joining the ruck". Rugby union officials make much about the "safety of players", but this is an egregious oversight that is let go 30 times a match.

      @@rugbybasics4269 If you are first opposing player to engage the ruck then you are allowed to charge & bind on the first player on the attacking team ( who has stepped forward over his tackled teammate) ready to engage over his grounded teammate. While doing so you must keep your head & shoulders above your hips and your feet on the ground (not on the grounded/ tackled opponent). If you have NOT yet bound with one of your defending teammates I presume it is legal to drive that leading opponent off/back as far as you can to expose the ball for your following ruckmates. It's what I always did. Would this get whistled up if all I did was blow that leading opponent off the tackled player and/or the ball? I kinda specialized in that! Do I have this right?! This becomes another foolishness or inconsistency in the Laws or their interpretation. If the tackled player does not make an attempt to roll out of the way once tackled, he becomes a blocker as soon as the ball is released as he is in front of the ball ie offside. Most difficult for a defending side to push over the ball when tackled player is lying in front of it. Decades ago lying around the ball, cradling it as is now done in one's body, was considered "dangerous play" as the player on the ground would be "rucked out" ie stepped on (frequently) as a warning not to be so foolish ( or to stop cheating the Laws). This was the "manly" arts of the loose play which should have been whistled up as a penalty as the alternative was available and still should be: defenders bind and drive OVER the tackled player and HEEL the ball back into the prone body...ie prone body is offside and so a penalty results if no further advantage is obtained by the defending side. This leaves open a number of options for general play; Foremost, is that the defending side having rucked over the ball can keep the ruck moving forward requiring the NOW defenders ( those who have lost the ball) to create their own opposing ruck formation thus creating space about the field for the ball to be run and passed. Again, in the long look, requiring less "bash" and bulk to penetrate defense and thus skill and fitness to dominate rather than bulk. Game becomes more of invite to all levels of human form and skill. I wish to believe that audience for rugby is more moved by the swift and adept movement of the ball and runners running than bulked up bashers bashing. The video's of "Rugby's Greatest Hits", "Rugby's Biggest Punch UPS" all that sort of trash might fade from existence ( the National Hockey League in US and Canada saw revenues decline after the 1970;s when punch ups were heralded as "just hockey") and speed and skill become the keynotes to a once beautiful game.

    In examples above, once the ball is moved to a player at the back of the maul, all players in front are offside or blocking. Maul is over once player who took the ball into a tackle has passed or handed it back as no longer are players from opposing sides bound round the man on his feet carrying the ball. This is a very POOR interpretation of English as a common language. If the ball was brought to the ground, ie turned into a ruck, fair enough, a type of "loose scrum", but this "hook and ladder" is clearly a massive "blocking" or "offside" that is let go. Why? It was not always the case but seems to have crept nastily into the game since 2000, maybe even earlier when the game became pro. Whole point of fluid rugby should be equal access to the ball and the fitter, swifter, more skilled players or sides, or units won the equal access. Here there is no access to the ball as players in front of the last player are blocking access by their bodies being in front of the ball when their team is in possession, ie once again, offside. I find this and other such "oversights" a detraction to the game. If one can't have a chance at winning the ball, one becomes part of the "spread defense" which means no space in which to move the ball. Defense must then be bashed through ( "win the collision") and the game becomes about bulk and brawn rather than a fluid game of ball movement more akin to basketball then American football. And the injuries now are in access of American football which has on going lawsuits against the NFL for insufficient protection of the players...Avg life expectancy of one who player at least 5 years in the NFL....54 ( of course this is not cause -effect reasoning, but it is a consideration given all the CTE evidence....and pro rugby is now noted by NFL as having more head and neck injuries....ie "we're not that bad..."

    Many mauls are joined unLawfully, and without a bind to anyone on their own side. One can see this over and again in 6 Nations recent competition....It amounts to a shoulder charge of an opposing player who is NOT in possession of the ball. I would rather the Law read that in a maul or a ruck one cannot make contact with a player on the opposing side unless Bound up to the armpit with a member of their own team who is part of the ruck or maul or is process of forming a ruck or maul. Was a time when second rows roamed the pitch within an arm length of each other so that they could link to join a ruck or maul with doubled force.

    Also isn't an offence being committed right at the beginning in most cases when the player is tackled, falls to the ground and then moves the ball backwards nearer to his teammates. Surely once you are tackled to the ground you have to release the ball and certainly not move it nearer to your teammates. Either one of these is a penalty, yes?

      The whole point of the ruck is "to make the ball available for play" ; hence releasing the ball can be done with the hands of the tackled carrier or the feet of his attacking teammates. Promptly whenever possible. Hence the ref's "Use it!" When bodies, arms and legs start piling up all kinds of shenanigans can occur. That's when the referee's x-ray vision will be questioned!🤔

In this scenario the scrum will be awarded to wales (Law 16.18) If a maul is formed immediately after a player has directly caught an opponentís kick in open play, a scrum that is awarded for any of the above reasons will be to the team of the ball catcher. BUT if you kick the ball directly into touch and you were outside your own 22 area the lineout will be inline where you made the kick on the touch line. Also if you are outside your own 22 area and you kick the ball but it bounces infield first and then hoes into touch the lineout will be to the opponents where it has crossed the touch line. Hope this helps, I have a video on kicking where we visually explain.

    Super handy, as an aspiring ref! Any chance of a video on common examples of foul play?
