In rugby league, the scrum is more about restarting play quickly, so players bind together and the ball is put into the scrum without pushing. In rugby union, the scrum is more of a contested set piece, so there's a push to try to gain possession of the ball. It's a difference in the rules and focus of the two sports.
Hi! I understand most things about the scrum now but I do have a very basic question. Once crouch bind set is done and the ball is chucked into the tunnel - what happens to the ball? Is it the front line that tries to move the ball backwards? If so, are they trying to get it through all the legs of the pack as they can't touch it? Please help. 😂
NRL scrums used to push & hookers contest the feed but they were a bit of a dogs breakfast. they changed the laws re contested scrums & no longer being able for the defender to strike at the play the ball. Having said tha i don't think it is illegal not to push in a scrum as from time to time one team will push the other side off the ball, more like a gentlemans agreement not to push. The advantage of still doing it is for 1 play - all of the forwards are in a tight bunch that gives the backs some freedom & more space
So, how come in the NRL, the scrum is not played that way?
