Many mauls are joined unLawfully, and without a bind to anyone on their own side. One can see this over and again in 6 Nations recent competition....It amounts to a shoulder charge of an opposing player who is NOT in possession of the ball. I would rather the Law read that in a maul or a ruck one cannot make contact with a player on the opposing side unless Bound up to the armpit with a member of their own team who is part of the ruck or maul or is process of forming a ruck or maul. Was a time when second rows roamed the pitch within an arm length of each other so that they could link to join a ruck or maul with doubled force.
