Wundervolle Maschine 😊😊
hi they say they are pro i find they have watched alot of youtube video's i can tell the pro's have big holes in there know how because there's no info on youtube i work on deck's my self and i get all my cap's from RS if i am in a hurry far east you have to wait along time note to reseller of caps i 100% know where you get you caps from big bags of 100 in each been there or a 1000 at a time
RS used to be walking distance from my house, it was great, now they have moved from East to South London, what a pain ! I will now have to buy all my caps from Ali Express.
@@harveysvintageaudio i use to go the the same green lane was it yes they moved like you said
Just picked one up. No manual. Any idea where I can find one so I can operate the machine properly?
Nice, Harvey, but it won't hard to lift the circuit board just to check for any dodgy looking caps.
Yep, it's only 4 torx screws.
Running well, I would leave the Opamps in yeah the new ones perform better but not perceivable to the human ear. Typical Philips construction with a decent PSU I doubt an external PSU would improve things.
Yep, good point think I will leave the original OP amps in.
Aww Grankids are the best. xoxo
They certainly are Charla. xoxo
The Display has an On-Off button on the remote ….. www.cyrusaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PCMII.pdf
The Mission has the superior swing arm laser and the unit is basically a Philips, these last forever usually if they fail it is a cap on the servo board. Not very high-end but decent .
Yep, correct ! I have been doing a bit of research on it and think I even have two spare Philips laser assemblies for it as I fixed a failed laser unit ? on a B&O unit the type with the horizontal sliding glass doors. I kept the old unit in case it wasn't the actual laser itself.
When you open this unit up, Harvey, then check the caps, there may be a bulging one, you never know.
I meant to say at 1 min 08 seconds that CAPACITOR is problematic, NOT transistor, lol.
.....and Harvey, when you take that board out then so check for dry "bones", joints..tee-hee, for you never know, for even the best Audio manufacturers never ever got it 100% on their solder joints.
That's true Theo.
Wel, this unit must be 20 years old now and you know what Paul says about those caps when they go beyond 20 years"?". I suppose that having to change that faulty cap would be the ideal time now to change them all. The latter, yes, if you wish to remortgage your house, Harvey..lol. Some reviewers state that this CD's response is flat on pop and jazz music, ah, but what amp were they running the CD player through ?????????
Very true Theo, yep what amp were they using, lol.
Interesting Harvey, will be great if that cap helps, shame the PCB has to be lifted out to do such a quick job isn't it..
We shall have to see, I'm sure that is the problem. It's also mentioned on the net somewhere and service manual. Shame no bottom access panel, damn.
replace all the chinese branded ones
Yep, sounds good.
Sorry about some of the camera angles, I am pointing to the subject matter but when I watch the video it's missing what I'm filming. I think it's where the lenses are situated on the iPhone 11 Max Plus. Regarding the capacitor I meant 2,200uf NOT 22,000, lol.
I have been looking on the net and apparently the skipping, not reading all discs properly is a common problem with the Arcam CD73, design flaw, read this link: www.avforums.com/threads/arcam-cd73-problem.1327022/
@@harveysvintageaudio oh, I see...thats not been my experience. Pretty reliable and forgiving of less than perfect discs is my general impression
@@harveysvintageaudio cleaning the rails/sled gears is good advice, I think they're made of hard nylon, so shoukd be whats called self-lubricating, I'd avoid all oils or grease unless specifically recommended by Arcam. Hope this helps!
@@DalstonVinyl That's what I was thinking myself when I first opened the machine but the machine seemed to work better when a thin film of very fine oil was applied to the rails, a few other people have done the same apparently.
As a matter of interest, the earlier Arcam Alpha series disc players had some interesting circuitry inside...the range topping Alpha 9 cd had a d/a circuit designed by dCS. I have an Alpha 7, and a DV88, and used to have a CD73 too. Cheers!!
Did you ever have disc/skip reading problems with your Arcam CD73 at all ?
@@harveysvintageaudio no, I don't think I did, unless it was a quite damaged CD. But I don't REMEMBER any problems particularly, but I may just have forgotten. My general impression is Arcam players were some of the more reliable machines out there.
@@DalstonVinyl I was reading that the Arcams have a particular problem also playing some newer CD's and this fact was confirmed by Arcam themselves. Most people say it's a design flaw issue.
Good job Harvey, hopefully you've worked your magic on it.. If you can't find any words to describe Andy let me know, I could certainly help you with that !..lol
I should have said, now you know why it is working perfectly...ho-hum...lol
I know what's happened here, Harvey. By you opening up the works again, you have disturbed a Gnats toenail that was stuck on part of the Laser drive mechanism. Now you know why it is not working perfectly...lol
Lol, Theo. I managed to cancel the order for a new mechanism with laser, bit of money saved.
@@harveysvintageaudio Jolly good.
back in the 70's my dad had a reel to reel. wished i had it today. good job harvey on the cd player
Thanks Brad, nice to see you here bro. Yep, I just love reel to reels as they are more robust than CD players, lol.
Well done that man!
Thanks Steve. Yep, laser all okay in the end, lol.
Thats a great floyd album also :)
Hopefully a bad fuse
Now after seeing it power up . Maybe the caps need to be reformed
I’ve been following this series with great interest as I picked up an Arcam CD73 just over a week ago off FB Marketplace for £80. Although I’ve had no problems (touch wood) I did decided to lubricate the same white cogs and metal runner as you have done as a precaution. If it’s a keeper the remote control (Arcam CR224) is a must. It allows you to programme track orders/ shuffle play/ and toggle the display etc. also it allows you to either dim or completely turn off the display during playback which apparently increases sound quality. Thanks for uploading these videos!
No problem, thanks for watching hope the videos all helped. The original remotes are expensive but found a CR224 copy for £12 from China so it looks like I will be getting one of those, oh well. Glad yours is working well, so is mine now I think. Played great tonight just hope it carries on working that way.
@@harveysvintageaudio BTW I notice that your CD73 does the same as mine on switch down. Random pixels on the screen illuminate. I understand this is a known thing and has affected these models since new.
@@ralphalder14 I was actually wondering about that, but if normal should be okay I guess.
@@harveysvintageaudio .. I thought it strange at first but after asking about the random pixels on the Arcam FB page, a lot of them do it, and many have done so since new. I’m no longer worrying about it but if you do stumble upon a simple fix then please let us know.
@@ralphalder14 I sure will, thanks for watching.
I hope you don’t leave it on top of that NAD like that just suffocating that thing
Perhaps what you should have done, Harvey, was to clean all the mechanical parts first before lubing.
Well I did, there was only one part of the rack on the laser I could not get too, will remove the clamp bracket later if it jumps again.
Would you believe it ! since I stopped filming, the CD played ALL the way through with NO skips, lol.
How irritating Harvey, most of the CD players I've owned have succumb to similar issues in the end sadly.. Lens cleaning etc has never been a permanent fix for me.. I've seen 12VoltVids adjust various digital signals and voltages to cure 'disc reading' issues.. You may have to do some hard core learning and get your scopes out of hibernation ! lol.
I know, making another video tomorrow, problem sort of sorted out for now ? will explain in detail what I did.
Fived a Bose Cd Player That Refused To Play Cds And Skiped On Tracks But The Laser Was Not Fawlty Turned Out After I Replaced 6 Caps It Fixed It Regards mike.
Nad 4020B Tuner Was The Matching Tuner For The Nad 3020 Amp Harvey Regards mike.
Leave it on all day and keep playing it. Then off tonight and try again tomorrow !
Good idea Steve, i'll leave the amp off as I want it to breath a bit.
I had a few Grundig YV's like this - Grundig with some other crap inside! I found the problem with a hairdryer - One Capacitor! But if there is dirt on the worm gear that loosens up when it has warmed up then the same applies. A heat problem could be either one!
Got to be an "Open it up" jobbie, Harvey.
Yep Theo, lol.
I think there is more to it than just a lens clean, will take it apart asap. My friends band by the way is called "Tea For The Wicked" I will play it as soon as I get the Arcam working right.
Why? ugly divorce. Pissed at husband.....
It was in the trash for a good reason.
You Lucky Josser. A few caps may need to be changed and the laser cleaned, but what a superb machine!
It certainly is Steve, I love it ! best CD player I have ever owned. Been looking on Ebay for a remote, crazy prices, unless someone has got one to donate to me, you never know, lol.
Didn’t play for a long time it need to charge the old caps. You will need to clean the laser and lubricant the mechanism. Maybe replace some caps in the power supply.
Yep, that makes a lot of sense.
There's a view about 11:50, which looks as if the whole thing is warped or twisted, perhaps you should have a good look and use a straight edge along the side to check if it is bent, perhaps it has been dropped and twisted by it hitting the corner which could also explain the crack.
I picked up the exact same model and in the same colour on Saturday (£80 on FB Marketplace). I wanted a CD player for a second system upstairs but it’s so much better than the Marantz CD5000 in the main system that it has replaced it (Marantz now upstairs). The only niggle I have is when switching off the display shows some random pixels but I’m told this is a common problem (I see yours does the same) It does come with a remote, and the remote model number is Arcam CR224. A full instruction booklet is downloadable on the Arcam website. They do sound good don’t they!?

Yep, that's why I like the early sliding trays, I will never put a DVD or CD in a Mac if ever I can help it, been there got the T shirt, it''s a real pain in the bum. Thanks for the view bro.
Congratulations it works
Yep thanks, very lucky indeed.
Use a nail file from your wife, lol;l
You've done well Harvey, every component in your little system was on it's way to the tip..Those case screws look like those pesky security Torx things with the pip in the centre... No more taking the p*ss out of VER you know damn well he knows best..lol
I noticed those screws when I put my visor on, I have those drivers anyway so no problem.
Now, they say the main reason for turning down the volume control on your Amp, is so that when you switch your Amp back on, so you do not shock the output transistors with a sudden burst of high power.
Yep that was the other main reason Theo.
That's a keeper, Harvey, a great unit. Do a video of you opening it up. Seems like all this unit needs is a service to the CD player and a good clean-up in side. As Paul, of PS Audio states, if the caps are nearly 20 years old then think of changing them. If the caps are 25 years old, or older, then you must change them. Yep, and we all know not to argue against Paul, not with his 50+ years in the High End Audio design and build HiFi business, for Paul definitely knows a thing or "Three" lol.
Yep that's true, the relay clicked a few times but was fine afterwards. Going to use it all week and see if the relay clicks again. But yep, going to check all the caps. I don't like doing things live, prefer fixing in private, also hard with mbl in hand.
Hiya Theo, Paul is a true genius but Andy at VER knows much much more...lol
@@user-cz9hh6nm9b I won't argue against that, for Andy is a BIG boy...lol
After just watching the video myself it sounded like a relay click ?
Sorry about the noise on the recording, I was uses a silly iPad at the time, my fingers must have been rubbing on the microphone, lol.
I own one. They are really not very good sounding.Sort of dirty and hazy sounding.I guess that sort of sound has its place in cheap systems where you might want to mask the crappy sound of other components but in absolute terms it is not very good.
Yep, great little amps, I quite like the sound actually, but that's me, lol. thanks for watching.
@@harveysvintageaudio Yes they sound pleasant and musical enough.Just not very high resolution.
