I think there is more to it than just a lens clean, will take it apart asap. My friends band by the way is called "Tea For The Wicked" I will play it as soon as I get the Arcam working right.
I had a few Grundig YV's like this - Grundig with some other crap inside! I found the problem with a hairdryer - One Capacitor! But if there is dirt on the worm gear that loosens up when it has warmed up then the same applies. A heat problem could be either one!
