    They bought all the snakes they could from local pet shops but it still wasn't enough to fill the area so they added a lot of garden hose to fill the gaps. when they escape the chamber, the "dude sitting in the corner" was knocked out by Indy in a deleted scene. the film's producer Frank Marshall plays the pilot in the fight with the flying wing right after (the college Indy teaches at is named after him too). Those old subs really did travel on the surface as long as it was safe. The batteries and air supply only lasted maximum 2 days, but they had to travel very slow, like 2 knots to get that kind of endurance, so was not common to remain submerged nearly that long. Or they could use the snorkel for air to be just below the surface and run the engines, but they could still be spotted almost as easily as if on the surface by planes or from the exhaust plume. On the surface, they could travel much faster. Nuclear submarines don't need batteries and make oxygen from splitting seawater using electrolysis. They can stay underwater for as long as the food supplies last. The Royal Navy's HMS Vengeance set the record for 201 days without surfacing.

    • @OfficialDNJmoviehouse
      @OfficialDNJmoviehouse 2 дня назад

      Learning a lot about submarines after reacting to this movie! 201 days imagine being on that deployment.

  • @wadehines9971
    @wadehines9971 2 дня назад

    Subs prefer to travel on the surface when they can because they are run by diesel engines and the engines consume air (oxygen). They do use the engines to charge batteries for running under water. (Nuclear subs work differently). A sub can run at "periscope" depth and use a snorkel to breath but there's still a problem of fighting more resistance to forward motion when submerged.

Rather than attack & SA his tied up captive he'd much prefer to be the good guy & wine & dine her & give her nice things. While it may end up at sex, that's not what's on Belloq's mind. He's still wants Indy his life long rival for treasures to know there's nothing Dr Jones can have the Belloq can't take away. Marion is the ultimate treasure to take away. He doesn't care about her, he just want's to take her away from Dr Jones.

    If memory serves me correctly, the shot with Indy filling the left side of the frame completely in profile came about because they used a VistaVision camera for that. That was a widescreen film format where the film strip runs horizontally, not vertically. ILM liked to use it for visual FX because a larger area of film is exposed, giving more detail, but since the cameras were just modified for the film transport, the optics being the same as 'normal' film cameras, the eyepiece/viewfinder only showed part of the full frame, so the camera operator had to guess what the rest of frame would look like, so the camera lend itself to such frames where one object filled the part you couldn't see (here, most of Indy's head), and the eyepiece used to make sure the other object (Belloq) was in focus properly. (VistaVision was never adopted widely. Hitchcock liked to use it a lot, then it slowly died, but then it was resurrected by ILM, as I said, for visual FX.)

    • @OfficialDNJmoviehouse
      @OfficialDNJmoviehouse 3 дня назад

      That's a great piece of information. So theoretically, if they had the correct eyepiece for it and could 'see' everything they might've not shot the scene that way?

    The stunt going under the truck was inspired by an old western stunt originally from the movie "Stagecoach" (1939). Guy goes through the horses and under a coach, come back up from behind. Stunt man Terry Leonard had tried to do the stunt for a western a year earlier, but it didn't work, so he suggested to repeat it here with the truck. For some shots with Indy trailing behind the truck it's actually Harrison Ford himself. He was asked before if he was worried about it, he answered: "No, if it were dangerous they would have filmed more of the movie before."

    • @OfficialDNJmoviehouse
      @OfficialDNJmoviehouse 3 дня назад

      The movie Speed does a more modern take on this stunt and I remember it being pretty good though its been years since I've watched. We might end up doing a 'wife reacts' to that one eventually!

  • @MartinBeerbom
    @MartinBeerbom 3 дня назад

    The plane rolled over Harrison Ford's leg. Fortunately, it wasn't as heavy as it appears, and they put squishy rubber tires on it, so the damage to Ford's knee wasn't too bad. He didn't trust local medical services, though, so they just bandaged it, put ice packs on, gave him pain killers, and he soldiered on.

    No one has said it yet, so here goes: Originally, there was a longish fight scene between whip and sword planned with the guy Indy shot. However, most of the crew (Including Ford) was down with dysentery from eating local food (filming was done in Tunisia). So someone -- reports who vary depending on who's talking -- suggested "Just shoot the guy!" John Rhys-Davies (Sallah) was so ill he wished to die. He calls it the single most horrible experience on a movie shoot he experienced ever. There's an episode of "Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum" with him where he talks in length about it. Highly recommended. The only one not affected by food poisoning was Steven Spielberg, because he only consumed canned food he had bought in bulk from Harrod's (Rhys-Davies' words).

    * We are 33 years overdue for an Indiana Jones prequel film series, starring a new actor(but only if they choose someone *OTHER* than "Alden Ehrenreich"). Anthony Ingruber *WOULD* have been the perfect choice but, he's 34 years old now. I'm sure if they do a prequel series, they're gonna wanna pick it up where *The* *Adventures* *of* *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* television miniseries left off. The first film could begin where Indy was transferred to the *American* *Expeditionary* *Force* of the *U.S.* *Army* *Air* *Service* in 1918, and served with "Jock Lindsey" in the "Meuse-Argonne Offensive" of WWI on Jock's "Glenn Martin MB-1 Reconnaissance Bomber Biplane"(hence the bomber jacket, and how he knew how to fly that biplane in The Last Crusade). * The Paramount logo could transform into "Mont Verdun" or something. We are introduced to Indy and Jock. We only know it's Indy because there's some dialog, and Jock calls him "Indy". The caption reads *France* *1918.* After the opening sequence when they fly off into the sunset, they could cut to the outside of the "University of Chicago". The caption could read *Chicago* *1919.* It would cut to a college professor giving a lesson on what sounds perhaps like "Archaeology 101". It turns out it's "Abner Ravenwood". Indy is in his class, and he recognizes him as being the man he met named "Fedora" in Utah, 1912. After class, he walks up and talks to him, and Abner remembers him. They hit it off well. * After a montage scene, they take us forward through the school year, and they seem to have become friends. Abner has even apparently introduced Indy to his daughter "Marion", and they show us brief scenes of them dating, with Indy taking her to movies like "The Mark of Zorro", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Charlie Chaplin" and "Buster Keaton" films, going to the "Ringling Brothers Circus". We see Abner planning an expedition for the coming summer in 1920, and he's teaching Indy the archaeological process and procedures of such an endeavor. * Then we jump ahead to them getting on a plane, and the 3 of them beginning their "little" adventure together to......wherever. Perhaps Peten, Guatemala, where they discover "The Temple of Tikal", but they've got tomb robbers on their trail, who work for a local organized crime syndicate perhaps. Who knows? This is what we need. Not another movie like "Dial of Destiny"(Lord have mercy). To be honest with you, I don't even think they should've done "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". It's too bad movies cannot be "unmade".

    To give this film a, " 4 " rating is unforgivable. The thing is, this film was MADE for the big screen. The cinematography, sound design, effects, direction, props, orchestral music composition, were created for a very BIG movie screen. If you two watched this in a huge old style movie theatre on 70 mm film in Dolby 12 track stereo as it was shown in many high end theaters then ( where I saw it multiple times in 1981 ) ...then you would be stunned and thrilled in an entirely different, bigger, engulfing way than just watching it as you did on likely a tiny computer screen. No good. It deserves a " 5 ". And note: The male reactor was taking ratings off by " nit picking " as he called it when feeling skeptical that Jones could have ridden the submarine to the island. Well, first of all the island was not that far away from where he swam to the sub and climbed on....only a few hours. Further, contrary to what the reactor guy stated, those subs at that time did indeed ride at sea level with the topside exposed. They only submerged when heading to battle or surveillance missions. Otherwise, they stayed up top. There is an outake scene where Ford has his whip wrapped around a pipe on top of the sub as it submerged only several feet under the surface. He held onto that whip and was dragged by the sub for some time up to his neck in ocean water. The scene was cut out of the film for time purposes. That part of the story was also explained in the novel. Just FYI.

      You make some good points, and I can understand why someone would give this a 5, especially if they watched this in theater at release. It really is a great movie. Also regarding the nitpick about the submarine, I can totally admit that I was wrong about this one. Others have also pointed out that this was before the era of nuclear submarines and they stayed surfaced most of the time. I'm actually glad that I am wrong because it explains that situation so easily for me.

    Funnily enough, that IS the submarine from Das Boot (Or at least a cancelled version of it) - rented for the production from Bavaria Studios - and the model version was from Steven Spielberg's comedy movie "1941"

    • @MartinBeerbom
      @MartinBeerbom 3 дня назад

      Yup. It was the full scale replica (just a floating shell, not even sure it had an engine) loaned out by the production company Bavaria to Spielberg, but they forgot to tell the crew of "Das Boot" about it. They showed up one morning and the thing was gone.

  • @jamesbrown4092
    @jamesbrown4092 3 дня назад

    38:10 - It literally WAS Das Boot, or at least the filming model they used for the movie. The Raiders people arranged to borrow it for a day... which really upset some of the people making Das Boot, because they weren't told. They just showed up to film a submarine movie and found they didn't have a submarine.

    Even though the film had a PG rating, if you first saw it on tv the chances are the melting faces/exploding head scene was censored, which might explain why you don't remember it. The bloodier, more shocking scenes probably wouldn't make it into a modern PG rated film at all.

      @@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Given that the 'Miracle of the Ark' is pure Old Testament Wrath of God type stuff, and that "not looking" was a standard kind of commandment for these type of things (see Lot's wife turned to a pillar of salt for looking back at the destruction of Sodom, and there's sequences of how to treat the Ark where it's said to not look into, or not wanting to know what's inside, unless you're a priest), I just figured Indy knew from knowing his bible. After all, the type of history used in this movie treats the bible as more of a proper historical source that it is in reality.

Of course, I can't guarantee they've necessarily aged well. Some didn't really age at all, as they were generally short episodes, just to be shown before the actual feature, and often weren't taken seriously enough to preserve.
