1:45 - I've seen many RUclipsrs react the same way when Alec tosses the spider out the window - gasping and thinking it was a cruel thing to do. The truth is, though, that a spider's mass is low enough that many if not most of them will ride the air currents to the ground and won't be hurt at all. They may even use a thread of their web "silk" as a sort of parachute.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Believe it or not, wolf spiders (the type Adam picked up) are pretty much harmless to people. They can be intimidating as hell, since they're fast-moving hunters that don't build webs, and their stop-and-go movement is uncanny to us. But their bite isn't dangerous to us or other large animals, and (being visual hunters) their eyesight is sharp enough that they can see what we're doing, so they aren't likely to panic and bite when handled with gentle, slow movements. Not the friendliest of spiders -- that would be jumping spiders, which are tiny but very curious and inquisitive -- but wolf spiders are pretty friendly by spider standards, and they actually make good housemates since they eat our pests while leaving us alone.
Otho wasn't horrified just by the change of clothes or the fact that the new clothes were bright blue; I think he was horrified by the fact that it was cheap polyester. Otho was clearly obsessed over high fashion and his idea of "good taste" and those kinds of people used to absolutely hate polyester clothing because they were considered cheap, tacky, and tasteless. I knew of girls in high school who would laugh, make fun of and bully anyone they saw wearing polyester. So Otho finding himself in a polyester suit was his worst nightmare.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse By the time the 1980s rolled around, the leisure suit (specifically the men's powder blue version, above all others) had become an icon of tacky clothing. By the late 80s, they were beyond out of style (though some version of them is apparently still available). The stereotype of a sleazy, leisure suited, male, complete with a gold chain peeking out from his wide open, chest-hair-baring, shirt, who was constantly on the prowl for women with whom he could never score, was so strong, that it became part of the title of a series of PC games: Leisure Suit Larry. His suit was usually white, but he was a hapless loser who had zero class and struck out almost constantly in his never-ending pursuit of the opposite sex. If you were good enough at the game, though, he might get lucky, once in a blue moon. Being seen in a blue leisure suit would, indeed, be a social as well as sartorial nightmare, for a guy like Otho.
This was very popular, and definitely a success. It made almost $85M at the box office, on a $15M budget, and even won an Oscar for Best Makeup. Before this, Burton’s first feature film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure made $40M, on a $7M budget. For being more on the unusual side of directors in the mainstream, he was cooking pretty well right out of the gate, and had a good string of successes. He hit his first snag with _Ed Wood_ falling short of even making back its budget in theaters, but it still got a lot of good ratings by major critics (I also saw it in the theater, and loved it). I guess not as many people were ready for a strange, stylized quasi-biopic about brutally (but deservedly) panned B movie (and that’s a generous description for his work) director Ed Wood, and how he ended up making Plan 9 From Outer Space. Of course, he didn’t let that setback stop him.
15m budget thats nuts, good on him for making that work. If he instead had a huge budget, would the special effects even hold up today I wonder? I've never even heard of Ed Wood, but it looks pretty neat! maybe we'll check it out.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse He probably could have bumped up the effects a bit, even on $15M, but likely wouldn't use a bigger budget to do it by more than a smidge, since that whole look is as much a style choice for Burton as anything, along with some doing what he could with what he had (which, to be fair, wasn't exactly just peanuts either). He has been pretty smart about knowing what will endure, and that it doesn't have to be any sort of cutting edge thing. If you think you might do a reaction to _Ed Wood,_ you might want to have a ridiculing reaction of _Plan 9_ first, if you're not familiar with it (and all us MST3K fans will "enjoy" that with you). 😆
The movie felt like an early 90s movie to us, but that could be because we were '90s' kids. The practical effects still hold up, and we're glad to hear that they kept the practical effects in the upcoming sequel. Thanks for commenting!
The PG-13 rating didn't exist until I think 1986. Back then, PG films could do a lot and push their limits, so long as they didn't go too far. I suggest you eventually watch "Airplane!", "Gremlins", and "Poltergeist". Those are hard PG films. "Gremlins" is a Christmas movie, but the other two can be seen anytime of the year.
Nice f’n model was a shot at the props dept. the tree was not supposed to fall and was improvised by Keaton. Burton liked it so much he kept it in the movie

I can confirm that there won't be deleted and extended scenes included on the 4K Bluray and DVD release on Tuesday November 19, 2024. that might be the exact same day that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice becomes available to stream on MAX.
Michael Keaton is way more versatile as an actor than most people give him credit for honestly. Yes, he can be stoic and serious like many remember him from the Batman movies he's done, but he can also do comedy like you saw in this film. He can do drama as well. If you both ever get a chance, you both should check out some of his other classics like "Gung Ho", "The Founder", and "Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance." Those three films really show off his acting chops in dramas imo, especially, "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virture of Ignorance)." Not sure if you two saw those films or not, but if you both haven't, then they're worth checking out. Fun fact though. When MIchael Keaton was initially cast to be Batman, there was such backlash over it by fans that they literally wrote thousands upon thousands of threatening letters to boycott the film because fans claimed they just couldn't see Michael Keaton as Batman, and they demanded a recast. Thankfully, he proved all of them wrong, and fans ended up loving the guy as Batman, after they saw his portrayal.
We are definitely interested in seeing more films with Michael Keaton after his Beetlejuice performance. He was so good! We love actors who can play different roles. He was also great in Spotlight. Thanks for the fun fact as well; it shows how talented of an actor Michael Keaton is.
The PG rating literally means "Parental Guidance suggested" meaning that the film wouldn't contain any strong sexual conduct, extended scenes of full frontal nudity, graphic violence, or gore, and would have limited adult language. It could potentially be viewed by younger viewers, but that would be at the discretion of their parents. Kid's movies at that time were rated G(acceptable for General audiences), meaning that the movie would have nothing objectionable in it and that young kids could view it without parental concern. PG 13 was an afterthought from the mid 80's for movies that were pushing the PG boundries a little too far for comfort.
