Hi I’m Jake. I make software for a living, but film and video have always been a passion. A while back I got into Virtual Production, and started out trying to build a home studio. Between Unreal Engine, Blender, DaVinci Resolve and other free software the world of filmmaking has never felt more accessible. I absolutely love the idea of real, immediate, interactive worlds to explore as a filmmaker.
I started recording some of our progress on RUclips, with as much technical detail as possible. At a certain point, around when our Google slide deck reached 100 slides, we realized a website was a better way to organize our learnings.

when I connect my tracker, it falls under the horizon in Unreal.. How do you move the Base stations up in Unreal?
Jake.. I need your help.. My trackers is under the foor in my Unreal scene. How do I move the Base stations up? Currently I have to move my whole world down to compensate..
Have you ever tried getting timecode and genlock to work in a packaged build?
Awesome work! Still very interested how I would be able to recreate this. Could upload a screenshot of the blueprint? It could be as simple as link to a public google drive document :)
Thanks so much for this.
Hi Jake, I am having a few issues creating a Black and White LUT that I can use to monitor my footage as I film. I followed your instructions removed all of the colour from my clip and ended up with a pleasing black and white image on my timeline. But when I import it into my BMPCC6K it puts the colour back in. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks for the great video.
Just realised that I need to click in the 3D LUT Compatible box in Film Look Creator so I'm all good.
good tutorial! I don't understand how to connect the sensor to Mars without using the rover.
So for an nDisplay setup, I'd need a Decklink SDI card with reference out, and a camera like the URSA Mini with reference in? I'm using a HDMI TV so not sure if the SDI to HDMI conversion will retain the reference sync.
hello! my garbage matte just shows black even if I add actors! cannot find a fix for this please help!
Very useful... thanks. Now I will watch the live compositing part.
Now combine this with a Zed2i stereo camera mounted on the camera body and you will be cookimg with gas...
I keep coming back to this video. So many gold nuggets in here. And the Virtual Production Guide is awesome. Are you still updating it, @JakeGWater ?
The "Virtual Production Indie Film Guide" is such a gold treasure for everyon diving into the virtual production realms. Big THANK YOU, Jake.
This tutorial is so good. Almost the same setup here (Sony FS5ii) but all the data handling, converter and decklink 8k pro is the same. So helpful. I'm getting now my cameras timecode in Unreal Thank you. (genlock isn't working yet. but I'm on it).
Thank you for this great tutorial! It helps a lot! Do you have a solution to soften the edges of a garbage matte?
I’m using vive mars I’m facing jitter issue how to solve it even in the static shot I can notice mild vibration and also while moving camera subject is constantly jittering
i got a problem that its kinda glichting on preview , anyway to fix it
Jake This awesome! Is there any written documentation on how to set this up? I could relly use some help, Thanks mate!
Nice but whats up with the jerkyness or no motion blur?
Thanks Jake. Too late finding your video...for me though I already bought a Ursa because I thought the pocket cams didn't have timecode sync...no SDI input for that... something the Ursa has. Anyway, I'll comfort myself with the other features the Ursa has😅
Do you know if there is a way to get the live camera information into unreal with being able to live colorgrade and chroma key before it reaches unreal (because the chromakeying tools of ue are kinda bad)?
Works perfectly for UE 5.3. You just saved me HOURS of splitting my mocap records from Unreal. This is brilliant. Thank you!
The garbage matte didn't work...😢
Thank you so much for this!!!! You saved my life 😆. I just started to build my virtual setup and this will definitely help. I've been looking for a video like this. Thanks so much!
was there a tutorial finally? still suffering tracker jittering issue
thx for sharing, great work!
Hi Jake, thanks for sharing! I encountered a problem with lighting when I'm working on virtual production. I'm building a virtual scene with unreal engine, which will be projected onto a LED wall through Disguise. The real life camera will record the image projected on the LED wall. I know what my camera settings will be (ISO, shutter angle, aperture), is there a way to light my virtual scene in unreal such that my highlight and shadow in unreal engine will not be clipped in the actual camera? My current solution is very inefficient because I always have to tweak the intensity of my lighting according to the false color or waveform of the actual camera. It would be great if I can do it in unreal engine directly in pre-production. Looking forward to hear from you!
how did you get the camera to output SRGB linear?
Do I need two SDI cables coming out of the camera (1 for SDI in into the capture card and another for the Reference input?
Why would be the issue if I were to use live virtual production, with a screen recording in the camera, let's say, with the pocket 4K or 6K? I would have to set to 16:9 in order it to match proportions with the Full HD output, but other than that, would there be any drawback?
Thanks for sharing ..did u mange to fix sliding using Htc Vive tracker ..(without mars system) .. do u recommend Htc system or (zed-2i-intelrealsense)
hey jake, i think your videos are grate as they shows us what can we do with all this things, but, please, share a blueprint screen so we can understand how you managed to do this, please
Hi but how do you render this composure out is it using the legacy exporter and how do you control the samples and anti aliasing in the old legacy renderer I'm so confused
how do you render this composure in seqencer
So so sad this series hasn't continued! It looks like Jake is no longer active on the channel What a bummer
You need the new vive Mars.
So I'm going to ask, I work with the BlackMagic pocket cinema camera 4K and the color management through the Nod, I mean, dragging the Color Space Transform to the Nod, will open different options within each part of the menu below, 1st Input Color Space? 2nd Input Gamma? 3° Output Color Space? 4th Output Gamma? The question is, to extract the best of the camera's color science, what is the setting that would be chosen for the options presented by the Color Space Transforms?
Thank you 😊
Is this full blueprint of zoom and focusing? mine doesnt work in ue5.
No. This guy left out so many steps. Like the Cine Lock View and Motion Controller Skeleton nodes were just nodes he made. He just showed how to get the zoom working. He didn't cover how to adjust the focusing.
Composure cg element is eating VRAM. Whyyyy?? ;(
Hello Once again,, would the bidirectional HDMI/SDI Work also? You have gone MIA for over a Year. Dude are You Okay?
hey this is good ive worked this part out but how do we record both this camera/cgi element in unreal PLUS the composite (that has the green screen element too) so we can have 2 tracks, 1 a clean cgi plate and 2nd track is the composit for reference? so that I then have everything I need when I go in to my editor to mash the raw camera footage to the cgi scene. (using the reference composit as a guide)
THANKS!!!
You should finish finish the series because I want to see how you set up the recording and the take recorder and stuff😊
Top🎉🎉🎉🎉
Dude thank you for this.
brow this video confuse the fuck out of me---you were everywhere with this browdy....but i get it, this shit is frustrating for everyone....
lmao
Great tutorial. Many thanks.
Hi Jake thanks for the video I have a pocket 6k g2 using unreal 5.1 i dont have a decklink as yet but I wondered if you think i can use My atem Extreme for timecode some how?
Hi Jake, For some reason the CG element looks different than what you see in the camera. The colors look way more flat on the cg element that on your camera view, how do you fix this?
Same problem for me
