Raw VS. Jpg. The first question of anyone getting into photography is what format should i shoot
Great video, always something new tips to learn. Thanks! Btw, which app for calculating dof did you use?
Thanks Arnstein, I am using the Simply Depth Of Field App
Even though I have full frame camera bodies my long landscapes and wildlife setup is a Fujifilm XH2 and a 100-400mm Fujifilm lens most of my birds are photographed at Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware or Chincoteague Island NWR on the Eastern Shores of Virginia. Often times i have multiple birds in the frame so i use f8 but with a single bird mostly f 5.6. The one thing to keep in mind when photographing birds like Herons and Egrets is when they get ready for lift off the bird stretches out and the wingspan is incredible, so anticipate this or much of the birds body might not be in focus or in the frame.
Yeah crop sensors are great for many situations with birds, I only recently switched up to full frame with the Nikon z8 last year, and even then had there been a dx option with Nikon I may have stayed. But after making the jump to full frame there are lots of situations where I much prefer it. The example you give with a heron taking off is a great example where you get the pixel density of a dx sensor but the extra room around the bird for the those sudden take offs, with fewer wingtips being clipped. Cheers
@@raincoastphoto The point I was trying to make about birds going in flight has nothing to do with the camera used but often times photographers look to fill the frame with the subject and Herons when perched or on the ground looked compact, then when they get ready to take off it's surprising how much bigger they get, When I started photographing birds like Herons & Egrets this is one of the problems I encountered, thanks for the reply.
Thank you for taking time to create such fantastic content. Priceless information 👏
Thanks Phillip
Loved this. Very helpful & grateful for this channel😊

Fantastic content. Highly underrated channel. Love your videos. Thank you.
Glad you like them! Cheers
A truly informative video, Stu! Many thanks for your willingness to demonstrate, in detail, the effects aperture has on DOF as well as background blur is very much appreciated.
Thanks Tom
Thank you so much for sharing, your video is so helpful and easy to understand! ❤
So beautiful❤❤❤
Glad your channel popped. Wonderful shots & tips. Subscribed😊
Thanks for the sub Sarah, I am glad you are enjoying the channel
Great information on video setting. Locking the shutter speed (shutter angle) will be a big help. One problem is I'm unable to customize each shooting bank with it's unique shutter speed. When I change the speed in video mode and lock it for Shooting Bank B, it overrides all the previously set speed in the other Shooting Banks with the new speed. What am I doing wrong?? THX
do you use the cotton carrier and also carry your tripod for when you stop
Yeah I always have a tripod with me. The cotton carrier is great for being handsfree while hiking and not having to put the camera in a pack.
Great video mate. Very informative, easy for everyone to understand. Once photographers start thinking about the angles of their shots .. their shots improve immeasurably👍
Thanks Richard
Getting low to eye level makes such a difference! Beautiful great blue heron!
Yeah it really does, amazing how even a few inches in height can make a difference
One of best lessons I learned is background is as or more important than the subject itself. Once I learned that my photography improved greatly. Great lesson
So true! Thanks
There is no 600 F4 in my future. Canon shooter with the 100-500 7.1. I’m excited to see you working with a zoom here. Love the channel and just subscribed!
Yeah not even sure I want a 600mm F4 to be honest, todays zooms are so good, the lighter weight and flexibility are hard to beat. Thanks for the sub. I really appreciate it
As a woman who started nature photography in my early 60’s. Getting on the ground is easy, getting up holding the camera is a lot more challenging! I literally started doing strength training to do just this! Being fairly new, it’s good to see those put into use in the field. I really liked it that these are demonstrated on site and not from behind a desk! I need to get better at using the flip screen. Some of my favorite places have reeds along the shore making it hard to get a really low angle! Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Lol yes getting down is the easy part, that's the beauty of editing, I will have to post an unedited clip of me rolling around trying to get up after on an hour on the cold ground. Great idea on the training, whenever I hear people say they can't wait to get into wildlife photography when they retire, I don't think they realize how physically demanding it can be. I am glad you liked the video, I always try and shoot in the field if the weather is permitting. Cheers
Great fun isn't it😊
Great tips, love it!
Thanks
just found your channel, great videos been doing bird photography 15 years in Ontario full time ,really enjoy your videos. keep them coming
Thanks Joe, really appreciate it.
Very informative .. thankyou

Thanks!
Welcome!
Nice review. Have you re-soled your SL actives yet? Ive had mine for about 4 years and the soles are now wearing thin on the front outside edges. Absolutely fantastic boots and i expect to get several more years use from them.
Thanks Joe, no not yet, I have kept most of my hiking to trails so they have worn quite well for me. They are a great boot that's for sure. Cheers
Is it good for cinematic and wedding photography?
Oh yeah definitely it is a fantastic all around camera.
Very helpful- thank you!
Your welcome glad it was helpful
Thanks for this vid! I may pick one of these up. Currently using a Peak Design Capture on a backpack with my Canon R7 and 100-400 lens. It works but on longer hikes or if I start using a larger lens I would think the G3 would be more comfortable.
Yeah getting the weight centered on your body really helps on longer hikes, worth the cost in my opinion.
Thanks for posting this beautiful video. I’ve been hearing these lately and I had to call a few birders I know to find out what I was hearing. Now will begin my quest to see them!
You're very welcome, hearing them is 10% of the battle, at least you know they are there lol Good luck finding them. They are smaller than you think they will be. Not much bigger than a Junco just fatter.
Best case! Thank you so much for sharing! Please keep making more tutorials!
Thank you! Will do!
Hey Stuart! It's Carol from Scotty Makes Stuff here😀. Thanks so much for the lovely review! I hear you on a water-resistant case. It's not quite in our 'wheelhouse' yet, but I think we will get there by the time there's a Pocket 4🙂
Thanks Carol.
Just got a Z8 and while I appreciated other reviewers talking about the autofocus system, I feel like this video was the only one where something "clicked" for me. Just came back from an outing using these settings and the difference was noticeable (including using 3D Autofocus which I just wrote off as being as "good" as it was on the D850).
That's great to hear glad it was helpful. Good shooting
I spent a good month filming and photographing tree swallows Spring 2024, diving for mosquitos and larvae in a local pond/wetlands. That was extra challenging using my micro 4/3 Panasonic G9 with the Lumix 100-400 Leica vario elmar lens. I got a few great shots that are showcased in my latest wildlife/nature photography demo reel. Using the cropped sensor in a tight narrow viewpoint was the biggest challenge. I learned that you really got to pay close attention to their patterns of flight and behavior, while being ready to follow them instantly. You almost have to have a psychic ability, at the very least analytical, highly observant with fast reflexes to capture them. I recently sold my camera and lenses to upgrade to Full Frame, considering getting the Nikon Z6iii for so many extra benefits my last camera didn't have.
Very cool, yeah the tighter crop sensor can be tougher but it does allow you to fill the frame at a greater distance, trying to fill the full frame sensor you have to get really lucky. But if you are going to crop it does give you a huge advantage with following your subject. Yeah the Z6iii looks to be a great camera, for birding I do prefer the higher megapixel bodies for the ability to crop when needed though.
@raincoastphoto I ended up upgrading to the Panasonic S5iix full frame. It checked off almost all the boxes of what I like and would use in a hybrid camera. Although it's a huge improvement in features and functionality, it still struggles a bit on the autofocus in low light on subjects far away while using a 600mm Sigma telephoto lens at f 6.3. At 400mm it doesn't struggle as much. I was hoping for a little more accuracy with autofocus on this camera, since it has phase detection with back illuminated sensor. I opted out of stacked sensor camera options for now, until the developers figure out a way to fix it's known issues and drawbacks.
@@3DEditor Very good, I have never looked much into the Panasonic lineup. I have been a Nikon shooter since 2003 and it's much cheaper to not look elsewhere lol, Not sure what you have read about stacked sensors, all I know is i couldn't be happier with the Z8 I think many online reviews get too caught up in the fine details that rarely occur in real world situations.
@@raincoastphotoI watched plenty of real comparisons of images taken with and without stacked sensors. Stacked sensors lose color definition compared to cameras without stacked sensors. It's been thoroughly observed and reported by many.
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Thanks Stu, love your choice of music to enhance this video ! Don.
Many thanks!
Excellent video, you are so right that Vancouver Island has so much to photograph. I have lived on V.I. for 75 years and it has only been the last 15 years since I retired and got into wildlife photography that I realized what we really have on our island. I just have started to get into a little video work as well but I am still in the learning process. Thanks for sharing and I am really enjoying your videos.
Thanks Keith, that is the great thing with wildlife photography that places you get to go in search of your subjects. Cheers
Really great explanation of the various AF options for birds. I'm currently still shooting with the D500 and 200-500mm but trying to decide whether it'd be best to swap to the Z8 with the 200-500 or get a used 500mm f4 for the D500 instead. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely no question get the Z8, my 200-500 feels like a new lens on it.
@@raincoastphoto Thanks very much, I think you're right. I can always save for a 600pf later :) BTW I' really appreciate the time you've taken to explain the modes you use and the circumstances you use each in. I definitely approve of the keeping it as simple as possible method, given the plethora of options the mirrorless cameras have available. Thanks again.
How do you deal with CC and a Arca plate ? I have multiple CC setups and the problem is hub and the arca plate conflict in location. I am concerned with the stress you put on the lens mount, but I do like your idea of using the safety strap hooking under the lens foot.
The short answer is an Allen Key lol. I do have the arca swiss adapter from CC which works ok www.cottoncarrier.com/collections/attachments/products/ccs-universal-tripod-adapter . 99% of the time I have my long lens on so the the carrier works fine, but if I am going out for a landscape or Real estate shoot I just take the CC Hub off. I always have a Smallrig Cage on my Z8. So have the arca plate on that.
Quite an extensive field testing of the great techniques. Really like the way you have setup you camera. The system still needs refinement hence an option for manual control of AF point is prudent. 👍 Great
Thank you very much! Yeah manual over ride is just needed in certain situations for sure. I definitely find a lot of wildlife like otters, muskrats etc have such small eyes the camera struggles to lock on
I have had the Scarpa SLM boots for 15 years and they've been fantastic. Sadly, they don't make them anymore. Will be looking to get a similar pair and likely will get the SL Actives. I prefer no gtx lining and it's so hard to find these days, especially in large sizes (size 50)/15+). One thing I am dissapointed with is that Scarpa made the SLM's in a std and wide width, and the SL Actives just come in one width. Since I'm a narrow, I hope they will fit.
Yeah widths are very difficult for a lot of stores to manage especially in the larger sizes so I understand why they don't make them, just unfortunate for people like you. The SL actives do seem to fit a bit on the wider side. Were you able to try them on?
damn, those are some incredible shots these are really tough subject to capture.. amazing work man
Thank you, Cheers
What was your focal length with the Saw-Whets?
500mm and 700mm
Hi, will this feature slows down the AF focus? Someone told to switch off this to maximise AF performance. True? Thanks
hmm, not that I have noticed but I think it's a bit more complex than that. I have it set to turn on when I get down to 1/30 of a second so at that point the screen does black out a bit and then it may impact af a bit. But a slightly slower af is not nearly as much of an issue at the slower shutter speeds.
What shutter speed are you using for the barn swallows?
I had good light for this shoot so was shooting very high 1/3200s to 1/8000s
Just deleted all my previous focus settings, this set up is by far the best recommended set up on YT. Subscribed. May your channel exceed 1m followers 👏
Awesome, thank you! I really appreciate the comment, a ton of work goes into the setup videos so it's really great to hear feedback like that. Cheers
Great video, as a Nikon Z8 shooter who primarily shoots photos, this is very helpful as I've been looking to transition to some more video work.
Thanks, have I really enjoyed the Z8 for it's video capabilities, a steep learning curve but a lot of fun.
I recently bought a used Cotton Carrier G3 in black that is basically brand new. The photographer just didn't use it after the first time. Got it for less than half the price, so it was worth it. I'm looking forward to using it for hiking. I don't have a huge lens and I have a mirrorless camera, so it should be even more comfortable for me. I've been using a sling style strap that worked fine, but I don't like how the camera flops around on trail. I was glad to hear your perspective regarding build quality and durability. The only thing I'm not sure how I'll work out is what to do if I want to use my camera on a tripod. I do have a L bracket which may solve the problem. Thanks for the overview!!
Yeah that is the one thing I struggle with a bit as well. I probably shoot 90% or higher with my long lens so not a huge deal breaker and I just take the hub off if I plan on shooting landscapes or real estate. Cotton Carrier does make a hub with an arca-swiss plate built into that works well, but because I always have my Small Rig cage on my Nikon Z8 I don't use it anymore.
@@raincoastphoto I did see that hub they make, but it's another purchase. I saw 3 Legged Thing just came out with a new version of their L bracket. They added a quick release function. But, right now it only is for one camera, an OM/Olympus.
Thanks for sharing. Is that PU midsole soft as shock absorbing? Subscribed
Its not bad, but it's made more for support and durability. I put Super Feet insoles in them which seems to make for a nice combo
I have a set with roller hardware. 7 years backpack hunting in them all over BC. Been incredible. I dont know how many miles of sidehilling with 60+ lb pack. Just this year the heel lining has worn through. Other than that they have held up superbly. Hoping that my new kinesis gtx hold up half as well. If i can find someone to put new heel lining in im sure ill get another 7 years out of the SL activs
That's great to hear, with the leather heel lining you should be able to find a good cobbler to replace it.
Dude even the beak looks like a small eagle
