Birds Inflight Nikon Z8 Updates to my Shooting Bank A Settings- An evening with Barn Swallows

- In this video we go out to our local estuary in search of Barn Swallows. We will take a look at some of the changes I have made to my shooting bank A photo settings for birds in-flight. After 8 months and over 100,000 photos with my Nikon Z8 I have made a few changes specifically switching out the 3D af to Custom area wide settings on my fn2 button for my cycle AF autofocus settings. We will take a look at how these changes were made and why, and how they then perform in the field.

I spent a good month filming and photographing tree swallows Spring 2024, diving for mosquitos and larvae in a local pond/wetlands.
That was extra challenging using my micro 4/3 Panasonic G9 with the Lumix 100-400 Leica vario elmar lens.
I got a few great shots that are showcased in my latest wildlife/nature photography demo reel.
Using the cropped sensor in a tight narrow viewpoint was the biggest challenge. I learned that you really got to pay close attention to their patterns of flight and behavior, while being ready to follow them instantly.
You almost have to have a psychic ability, at the very least analytical, highly observant with fast reflexes to capture them.
I recently sold my camera and lenses to upgrade to Full Frame, considering getting the Nikon Z6iii for so many extra benefits my last camera didn't have.
Very cool, yeah the tighter crop sensor can be tougher but it does allow you to fill the frame at a greater distance, trying to fill the full frame sensor you have to get really lucky. But if you are going to crop it does give you a huge advantage with following your subject. Yeah the Z6iii looks to be a great camera, for birding I do prefer the higher megapixel bodies for the ability to crop when needed though.
@raincoastphoto I ended up upgrading to the Panasonic S5iix full frame. It checked off almost all the boxes of what I like and would use in a hybrid camera. Although it's a huge improvement in features and functionality, it still struggles a bit on the autofocus in low light on subjects far away while using a 600mm Sigma telephoto lens at f 6.3. At 400mm it doesn't struggle as much. I was hoping for a little more accuracy with autofocus on this camera, since it has phase detection with back illuminated sensor. I opted out of stacked sensor camera options for now, until the developers figure out a way to fix it's known issues and drawbacks.
@@3DEditor Very good, I have never looked much into the Panasonic lineup. I have been a Nikon shooter since 2003 and it's much cheaper to not look elsewhere lol, Not sure what you have read about stacked sensors, all I know is i couldn't be happier with the Z8 I think many online reviews get too caught up in the fine details that rarely occur in real world situations.
@@raincoastphotoI watched plenty of real comparisons of images taken with and without stacked sensors. Stacked sensors lose color definition compared to cameras without stacked sensors. It's been thoroughly observed and reported by many.
Excellent video - thank you very much. I was interested to see you using the wide area focus mode which appears to work extremely well. Have you ever used this mode to capture whales and dolphins?
Funny you should ask I have just started working on my Shooting Bank C setup which will be wildlife specific and you guessed it the wide area focus will be my preferred focus for that setup. I have been using it on seals and it works great so should be an excellent choice for whale watching as well. Cheers
Great video, some wonderful captures Stu. What lens are you using here, if I may ask? Cheers, Robert.
Thanks Robert, the 200-500 5.6 Nikon with the FTZ adaptor
Nice and informative.
May i know the name of tripod you are using??
Is it better than gimbal??
Hi Manoj, I am using the Leofoto Ln-364C Tripod amzn.to/3zBkr0P with a Manfrotto 502Ah Video Head. I have been quite happy with the setup. It's a good value setup imo. Not cheap but certainly not the most expensive either.
What shutter speed are you using for the barn swallows?
I had good light for this shoot so was shooting very high 1/3200s to 1/8000s
So it means z8 performs too good with 200-500mm with ftz adopter yes?
Lol it does ok, I still want that 600pf though
The osprey video u done with z8?
Yes all the photos and videos in this were the Z8
Is there somewhere I can see each of your settings on each bank? I tried to setup my Z8 based on your other video, but somehow my settings are not working.
Hi Brian, not yet, it is in the works. Are you having issues on the photo or video side of things? What are you having issues with?.
@@raincoastphoto Thanks for your reply. I figured out what I was doing wrong. I needed to go into Limit AF Area Mode Selection and update that section as well. Seems to be working well now. Thanks. Looking forward to your bank C video.
You’re taking a huge number of shots, maybe couple thousand or more. What software do you use quickly to preview and delete the ones you obviously don’t want?
Hi Guermeister, I use Lightroom Classic for all my cataloguing and culling. With shoots like this you can delete in big batches, anything a bit further away is an easy cull, and this is definitely not a typical shoot but I have got it down to a reasonably efficient process, that I will be taking a look at in future videos
