Mercedes E Class vs UK Country Roads. Did I Choose The Right Car..?
In this video we take the Mercedes E220d for a good run around the b roads here in North Essex. Using Roadcraft, this big motorway cruiser gets put beyond it’s comfort zone as we expose issues that aren’t immediately evident during relaxed motorway cruising.

Rare Heated Leather Recaros For The ST170
Просмотров 98311 месяцев назад
Fitting the correct black leather heated Recaro seats to the Focus ST170. The car originally would have had these fitted as standard, but over the years they had been lost. I managed to find a full interior including door cards in really nice condition to replace the blue half leather interior to help return this car back to standard.

18:37 Snapped the belt on my focus svt but damage is relegated to one cracked valve guide and of course valves. I'm hoping to clean up these hideous ports in the meantime and smooth out the chambers etc. Caterham 7 guys are getting decent flow from these old zetecs I gather. P.s. might even get it cut for oversized exhaust valves woohoo
Hopefully not too much damage and it’ll go back together ok! Sounds like a few nice mods going on there you’ll get some good power from that I’m sure!
Where’s the st gone ?!
Still in bits 😄 Workshop build video out soon then engine work over the winter 👍
? Was the previous one "no Bueno"
Didn’t download in the correct quality & was a bit too long. Take 2! 🎬
I figured I would add something as I have almost completed the rebuild of the rear suspension. I did torque the rear axle bolt as requested in the manual to 173 F-LB's, it baffles the mind that this assembly did not have a cotter pin involved for security. I have decided to add a snap ring as extra security and although not nearly as good as a cotter pin it will ease my mind a bit. Due to rotational forces it is much more likely the drivers side would loosen. If there was a poor safety design issue with the focus this is it.
Nice one - always good to add a bit of extra security where possible! Gonna double check mine when back on the road
Good job
👍
Came back here for the ride height information, I think that when you had all the parts laid out on the blanket you had the upper control arm in the correct orientation. 😀 It's interesting where the manual mentions the "Estate" model, here in the U.S. that would exclude a Focus and the automobile would be 42 feet long. 😁 I have to say you did an impeccable job with these videos, better then any of the online manuals could have done and actually they should be doing it this way for the price they are asking. Hats off to you sir, I hope you have some updates if you continued with the project. These videos are worth gold for personality and attention to detail. I hope you get more subscribers! I do have the Ford PDF if you are interested.
Thank you for the kind words and PDF offer I may well be in contact! More on the way soon. Next video will be a Mercedes Estate review as I wanted to have a drive, then workshop build video then we’re back on the ST170 engine build over the winter. Yes that upper control arm had me stuck for weeks 😆
So glad I had this video, working on my rear on a SES addition U.S., this video enables you to catch the gotchas before they do. 😀 My sub-frame was good, half way through the project right now. The SES addition comes with drums brakes, I did purchase a disk brake upgrade kit from Massive it's a nice kit. I replaced my front set last year and for those out there when removing the lower ball joint skip the torx bolt other then if it is "loose", rather loosen the nut side to just past the bolt tip; put a piece of wood between the sledge hammer and give it a good wack. It will come right out, thing is when reinstalling the torx side of the bolt must go back in the same way from the front! I made the mistake of putting it in backwards and tried to hammer it in and had a heck of a time trying to get it back out to put it back in correctly. That turned a five minute project into a two hour project. I'll send an update once I have completed this project. I think the worst part of this job is disassembly with frozen bolts of which I had 3, felt good about that as they were easy to get to. Thought about replacing the trailing arm bushings in which Ford calls the knuckle arm but with the cost of the tool and bushings, I spent 100 more and got both sides new and complete. I will also be installing a new 26mm stabilizer bar as part of the project. I did add a shock tower bar to the front last year and have the rear from Massive to add this year. These are good olds cars.
Wow that’s a lot of work sounds like you’re doing well with this! It’s always the way a 5 minute job ends up taking all day. You’ll have a fully sorted car there by the time you’re finished keep going 👍
Did you flush the coolant system and if so how many times? I am doing my MK 7 now but the oil volume that when over is a lot more. Also I have a new metal gasket to fit. Should I use sealant as well? I am not a mechanic so any help appreciated.
Can’t remember if I flushed the complete system - probably not needed unless it’s really badly contaminated or it’s not been done for a couple of years or so. Just used the metal gasket on this one no sealant. Best to check in a Haynes to be doubly sure though 👍
Hi, are you not restoring the ST anymore?
Yep still restoring it! More content coming soon. Currently completing a workshop build to allow engine work to be done over the winter so complete engine refurbishment on the way. More progress on Instagram st170_Restoration 👍
Good choice on letting the machine shop do the valves and vac test them! Watched a video on honing science and done properly it's really not a DIY thing; if I'm correct Bosch had put out the video. Very exacting to get the proper out come. Also check out The Motor Oil Geek on YT if you have not already done so, much to be learned about oil. Had used Royal purple in the past along with their filters but due to his recommendations I have switched the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum along side the Royal Purple oil filter. It's made with natural gas and the additive package is perfect for high and low mileage automobiles.
That is weird, that is not how oil is normally cooled. I would replace that with a true cooler, sorry for over commenting tonight.
That is how a focus has a new born... Alternator replacement. 😀 You are a fine doctor.
Haha thanks!
Yeah whomever designed the alternator position, well I hope that person got some help! I can see the AC being an issue to replace but not the alternator. That is a unit that needs to be 100% accessible to replace in need. I dealt with that issue on a road trip, it cost me but I had no choice but to have another do it for me. Normally it would have be a 30 minute job. In my case my Focus eat a battery after 3 months, second lasted two years; the third lasted 5 years so I thought I was out of the woods. Not to be so, crashed and burned in Michigan. As far as I'm concerned the alternator was bad from day one but since the replacement I have had zero issues. Wauconda Illinois here. Been around cars and worked on them for many years but what exactly are you calling an oil separator? Something rings a bell with diesel but not gasoline?
Add some heat sink putty to your arsenal. So far an amazing series on you ST rebuild!
Will do. Thanks for watching! 👍
Another thing you had mentioned was that it happened with or without the spring. Had not watched for the solution.
I watched another video the other day and this guy also restores the Focus model in Britain, the "banana" arm controls ride height, they all do really and are torqued as a unit using the dimensions you mentioned in a prior video. He had a really good explainer on it, if you are interested I will look for the video and send you a link or title. He has done what you are setting out to do. One day at a time and you are doing it correctly and doing it all. I've had a Ford Focus 2007 SES from new , runs and drives like new. I did the front last year doing the rear this year including adding disk brakes which the SES did not come with.
Might be worth doing a compression test, could be a bent valve from being over reved at some point point in its life 😉
Might be worth doing a compression test, could be a bent valve from being over reved at some point point in its life 😉
I had the head off recently and took the valves out - all seemed ok so it’s still a bit of a mystery! I’m thinking the most likely cause was putting in premium fuel and not being able to run it for a few hundred miles to calibrate the engine management. Gonna have fingers crossed on the restart 😅
Hey man I'm glad i came across ur videos do u have instagram
Hi thanks for watching! Yep it’s st170_restoration 👍
@@st170restoration followed man @robscarlife
Many thanks for a nicely illustrated video. It helped me immensely with changing the upper and lower oil pan gaskets on my 2003 SVT. Same car was sold in the US Ford market between 2002-2004. Much appreciated and looking forward to watching your other videos.
Thanks! 👍
what is the part number for the Mystery Chip?
Hi the full listing for it reads as follows - 1N5404 3A 400V Rectifier Diode. As of yet still untested so watch this space! 👍
Tried to take mine out today, you don’t show how to get the top pipe out that’s between the two rubber pipes with the sprung loaded clips…. I can’t get a socket on it.. because the pipe is so close to the socket… I’m assuming it’s a banjo type connection….
Yep the one on the very top is a banjo pipe for the oil supply. From memory I undid it with a socket or it may have been with a spanner - either way it seemed to come off ok on this one. For the coolant pipe spring clamps you may need a set of hose clamp pliers if regular pliers are slipping off 👍
Song??

Im an old dodger now, used to work on my own cars in the past, i cant understand why there is so much kak in a engine bay ! i think you have some patience, keep up with the good work, regards Ron.
Thanks! More on the way this summer 👍
Excellent video and great that you described how to remove the plug as difficult to ascertain by feeling it 👍🏻
What is the plastic clip you used to remove the fuel pipe called? Where can I get one?
Hi this one is called the A/C quick disconnect tool I got it new from eBay for about £6. Came as a 7 piece set! So much easier than struggling the lines off with half a hose clip like I did last time 😅
@@st170restoration Thank you very much, I appreciate the info.🙏🙏🙏
Completley off topic this question mate so i am sorry - it is about an ST though!! I have a mk1 ST like yours, but i have original headlights, Question is, can i buy xenon headlights like yours (from another ST mk1) and would they fit and work? All the best, C
Hi no worries! Yep you could get a complete xenon headlight unit from another mk1 st and it would fit just fine. The problem you’d have though is you’d need to have it connected to headlight levellers otherwise you may have issues with dazzle and passing the MOT. There’s a leveller on the front suspension wishbone and rear subframe - if the car came standard with halogen headlights these wouldn’t be fitted. Also they’d need the electrical connection to the headlights which may not be there if xenon’s weren’t original equipment. Had a chat to a guy a while ago who was planning the same thing but decided otherwise as it was extremely fiddly and the halogen lights on the car are very good
Thanks for your reply! My car is completely standard, none xenon headlights as standard, I think I'll leave it based on your reply haha!! I'm definitely no expert, having said that the reason I wanted to change them other than the fact that they look much better is my headlights have moisture in them and don't look good at the minute, do you have any tips for a fix in that regard? Maybe I need new gaskets? These are 20 years old after all! The car itself is mint, 3 door, no rust and only 65k and in imperial blue! I wish I had your skillset to really sort this out haha!
@@dadada1999 nice that sounds a good one! I’ve not opened up those headlights before so don’t know if it’s a good idea or not but I’d go with replacing the whole light unit as there are loads around at the moment 👍
Cheers mate, good advice!
What keeps the springs from just pushing the swing arms fully down ?
It’s all bolted together to the other arms and the shock absorber. It’ll drop down a bit more than usual when it’s in the air but won’t pop out fully unless the bolt near the wheel is disconnected. I found it a right pain to do!
After watching this makes me a lot more determined to rebuild my st170 shell. How much did your sills cost to replace mate if you replaced them?
Hi sills are still on the to do list. I’m gonna get the lot done both inners and outers once it’s mobile enough to be transported to a specialist for the work. I’m guessing the labour costs for that will vary greatly but the main thing is it’s gotta be a tidy job. I’m thinking a classic car specialist but undecided at the moment. Are yours rusted right through?
@st170restoration I'd take it to a classic car specialist mate as they're more clued up in extensive body work then a normal garage would be and their work would most likely be better quality. Mines scaring me if I'm honest its not had a mot since 2015 and the sills gave rotted out on both sides as well as the inners lol
@st170restoration just had a word with a mate of mine sills are a costly job if your inner sills are more or less ok id just put some primer on them as sills alone can come in at 500 a side or possibly more depending where you take it to
@@user-lx4zl3cx2w wow that’d soon rack up if doing all of them! I think the inner on the near side of mine will need doing but haven’t looked at the o/s properly yet. It’s one of those things where it may be a false economy to leave the inners but it depends on how high the bill is getting as always 😅
@st170restoration it can be costly mate but I think if you do most of the prep work yourself it should be miles cheaper as you'll only be paying for the labour fees on having them fabricated. I'll drop you a message on Instagram mate so you know what you might expect when it comes to them mines probably one of the worst on the net 😖😅
why this motor have 170 hp ? in argentina focus they have 145 hp
Hi not sure. The ones here in the UK should have 171 or 172 bhp if it’s running properly. If it’s a bit down on power it may have a minor fault with the IMRC unit or something?
GDI o normal inyección ?
nice work, you've been putting in that work.
Thanks!
when is the next vid mate😄
Should be mid spring - been crazy here this winter! 😄 Full dismantling of the engine (again) and a full rebuild including bearings. Parts are being built up here at the moment so nearly good to go 🎥
hey what timing belt tensioner did you use? I cannot find an OEM ford one anywhere.
Hi i got one from the Ford dealer in the end - had a bit of a job finding one and they had to order it from Germany if I remember correctly. It was silly money for a tensioner at nearly £160. There is a Dayco kit that people use that is apparently the same but I didn’t know enough about it at the time. If the Ford one is unavailable that’s the way I’d go 👍
Would it not have been easier to do this on the bench?
Absolutely. I’d take the complete unit out and put it directly onto an engine stand for all of the tear down next time. The original intention was a light refurb only..
oh ok light refurb grows arms and legs. Just stumbled across your channel, great content
@@cowsarsc haha that’s exactly it! Thanks 👍
what is the model car that have this seats, im amused of the look. gorgeous
Hi I think these are only found in the Focus ST170 as far as I know. Other Ford models have leather Recaros however I’m unsure if they are interchangeable between different models or newer Focus models though
I’m trying to find replacement for my drivers seat and I can’t find a good set of recaros anywhere
It’s strange sometimes you’ll see none for sale for a year or so then suddenly they’ll be several sets available all at the same time! Hopefully a nice set will turn up!
Hi mate. Ive changed switch in mine but the lights will only stay on if keep a firm hold to the gear stick in reverse position. Any ideas? Thanks
Hi - not sure. Did it have a tendency to do that before the switch completely failed? Only things I can think of are perhaps slack in the gear change cables or other wear. Or maybe switch not tight enough in the box? Let me know if you find out 👍
hi i have a connect with a coolant reservoir full of oil, there is no water in the head or on the dip stick and the engine still runs perfectly, do you think this could be the oil cooler? as everyone I mention it too just sys oooh that's that's the head gasket
Hi yes I’d say its most likely to be the oil cooler. It’s the cheapest option to try first and see if it cures it. Drain and replace the coolant too and give the bottle a clean out as best you can - you’ll soon see if it’s an ongoing issue. If it’s a head gasket problem it’ll show other symptoms too such as a mayonnaise type build up on the oil filler cap and general odd goings on so if it’s generally running ok hopefully you’ll be lucky 👍
is that a workshop manual you useing and if so where did you get it from
Hi sorry for the late reply! The manual I use is just the standard Haynes ones for the MK1 Focus. It covers 90% of stuff with the exception of ST170 specific bits such as the IMRC unit, getrag gearbox, variable valve timing components and a few other tuning company / SVT developed goodies.
At what torque does the Haynes manual recommends to tighten the lug nuts on the wheels for alloy rims? Thanks!
Hi Haynes doesn’t say for the ST170 wheels but the standard Focus petrol road wheel nuts are listed as 85 Nm
Your videos have given me faith to restore My 1.6 mk1 petrol estate best car I've owned for 8 years but bit rough now needs new sils to lot of work but your videos gives me hope Thank-you
Very nice seats! They look awesome. How is the sitting position? Is it lower than the standard ST170 seats or the standard MK1 seats? I find the sitting position a bit higher in the MK1, even with the seat lowered to the maximum. I was curious if with those seats, the sitting position is lower or not.
Thanks! The general position seems about the same but they are firmer to sit in than the blue ones. I recon they sit at roughly the same height as the old ones from the quick try I’ve had so far. One thing I did notice though is how much heavier they are! It’s really quite a difference!
@@st170restoration honestly they look heavy :D I'm looking for ways to make the seat go lower that the lowest position they go, do you know some tricks or mods that don't involve aftermarket seats?
Great video. It has @M539Restorations vibes. I've just bought an ST170 to replace the Zetec in my 1966 Anglia so this will be invaluable.
Haha nice one!! Not sure what Sreten would make of old Fords but I’m certainly glued to the goings on with his BMWs. Legendary channel 🫡 Wow that’s gonna be great! Will you keep the engine standard do you think?
@@st170restoration We stripped the engine down tonight and it has some bad scoring on the last cam journal on each cam (furthest from the pulleys) so I may have to replace the head. We'll be talking to the machine shop in the next day or two to see if they can do anything. The Zetec ran Jenveys so I'll probably use those again. I'll need to get an ecu that can handle the VVT though.
Makes me want to restore my focus svt.
Did you ever find the seals for the rear spindles? About to do rear bearings over the winter and want to make sure I have all the parts before I do the job.
I haven’t managed to track down a new set yet - think I’ll go direct to Ford and see what they have. From what I remember it’s a common seal to most of the Ford stuff so hopefully will be lucky! I’m gonna repaint the back again due to the finish not being good enough so will be taking all the bits off again and looking for seals. Let me know if you find any! 👍
im am studying your videos on the rear over and over = i have got as far as jacked up and wheels off but everytime i walk past car i spray it with wd40 before i tackle it - been two weeks since i drove back from Corner weighting lol they cudnt do it due to rear bushes = so its gotta be done ! Thanks for all the information - a lot of pitfalls covered! Thanks Again! I will be attempting this on a RS mk1 - and am absolutely dreading it right now lol
Glad it’s some help! Thanks for watching 👍
well i have a new problem = after renewing all nipples on all calipers the brake dont bleed ! ie its just a lump of fluid big air gap then just tops doesn't flow in to spill tray/bottle - hope to god its not my blimmin servo lol everything else is new apart from lines under car no leaks visible#!
Any links to the brake bleeder? Great video!
Thanks! I got it a few years ago so no link unfortunately. It was new from eBay and under £40 if I remember correctly. Makes doing brakes and clutches so much easier highly recommended!
Hi, thx for the video, interresting infos for me! Can you help? - Do You remember what the thickness/ stem lenght of the lifter buckets? - thx!
Hi lifter bucket is 25mm tall and 30mm across. Thanks for watching 👍
You're lucky, you found a set in such a nice condition. Or found a set at all.
I was looking for a set ever since I got the car but they were always too far away and in the wrong condition. These popped up in the next town only 20 mins from my house! Lack of space at the moment means they’ve gotta go temporarily in the car then come out again as the work progresses. Bit of extra hassle but they suit the car well.
