1 Reference, Many Caricatures! | Exploring Facial Exaggeration with Pencil
Welcome to my channel! So happy to have you here! Today we have a video trying to figure out how to create effective caricatures using a single reference photo. The results are varied in feel and resemblance to the subject (me!) which was a great way to learn a few things about exaggerating facial features.
I was inspired to begin a set of self-portraits from my friend, Melissa Martin, who recently released a video of her journey creating over 100 self-portraits - one per day. If you are looking for some fun inspiration, check out her channel and the video reviewing her first set of portrait drawings!

    These are so good - I love seeing how you've gradually pushed the proportions and yet still kept them recognisable. Fascinating to watch the process and really enjoyed seeing them come together. *tangent* Hadn't realised older versions of photoshop won't run on newer chipsets (eek!) ...erm...how old IS your Adobe suite? O.O *tangent* I really like how all of these turned out, but I think the sad spaniel-eyed Brian is my favourite :D Great video and really nice to hear the thought process and workflow :) I also found it interesting to see what you chose to exaggerate - to me, the square jaw shape stands out. Love what you did here - great stuff!

    • @BoruArt
      @BoruArt 2 дня назад

      Aw, thank you so much for the feedback, Julie! I learned some things, which is what I was after… and if I got a good drawing or two out of it… even better, haha! Spaniel-eyed! Love that! So yeah… my creative suite is from 2003 which is like 5376 in computer years. Apple used to use an Intel chip but now all their processors are Apple so… stuff made to run on intel machines won’t work with the newer Apple chips. So… meh. I’ll eventually buy a new computer and ditch Adobe completely and… just hope I don’t need to rescue some old Adobe file from the vaults. If I used Adobe and made an income from it, I’d buy a subscription, but… it’s like adding $30-50 a month to do… a hobby? Not even the core part of my hobby… I’ll need to pass. Hope you are well this weekend!!

    Brian your self-portraits are absolute brilliant! 👏👏👏I like how the different approaches makes each one unique, but they are linked to the same reference, a good reference is so important. I don't use Photoshop or anything from Adobe, and I won't go for it bc of the subscription mode 😬 but I've been looking for an alternative and Affinity sounds good. Have a great weekend 👋

      Yes! The reference photo is so important - and I think it’s a reason some people get discouraged at their own drawings - why things can look flat, you know? With the right shadow conditions you can make a very good likeness with just 2 or 3 shades even. Glad you enjoyed the art!! Thank you so much for your feedback too!

    I'm a big fan of your portrait work and you did not disappoint in this video! I think portraits 1 & 2 capture you the best but honestly, I like all of them. I love how you used colors, and what a great reminder that what matters is the value, not really the color itself. I hear you on the technology side of things... I had to succumb to Adobe's membership because I use Photoshop regularly but yeah that's such a racket! Ah Domestika: so many good classes! - would love to see what you do in the realm of wooden marionettes! Thank you for this video and your tangents, Brian! I enjoyed that very much! 😃

      I’m glad you enjoy those tangents, haha!! I can tangent with the best of them! Haha! I think your 2nd one was my fave, but I like all of them and how you used color and shading -- so inspiring! I'm with you on Adobe. I purchased Photoshop Elements on my laptop, and someday I will have to face the monthly subscription, which I don't want to do. I love Domestika classes. That’s so great to hear, Marcy! I could absolutely get addicted to Domestika courses considering the prices are so reasonable. Hello Brian, what fantastic and magical watercolour sketches, I love your style, and how you go back over areas with other colours to build up the picture, there is such a softness to your sketches, yet always full of energy. Really lovely. Also the stickers look great. Sorry iv been gone a while, just needed to recharge one’s batteries a little . All the best my friend . Johnny b

    This was so interesting to see Brian, never tried Cyanotype or search about it so actually learnt a lot! 💙 Maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm curious to know does the result is always blue? Or there are solutions that give other colours? Need to search videos how to do this in a t-shirt, would love to have one for me with this effect 🤗 looking forward to see the combination of Cyanotype and watercolour ✌️

    • @BoruArt
      @BoruArt 17 дней назад

      Never a dumb question, Teresa! I’ll preface this with “I’m not an expert” - but yes, there are ways of getting different colors, but most of those processes are either a bit advanced (multiple screens, exposures and chemical steps) or they are more like… introducing tints - dyes and bleaches. You can even use certain things like flower extracts, or turmeric, or tea or coffee. I’d love to see what you can do with a tee-shirt!! That would be amazing! If you do use cyanotype on fabric, you need to be careful about the detergents you use on them. Phosphates, bleaches and sodium can harm the print. (Actually, even though the prints are pretty hearty, they will eventually fade out with washing, even in clear water). But I’ve seen some gorgeous pieces that artists have made - it’s a very striking color for a shirt or dress!

    I was a commercial screen printer, and I was reminded a bit of the process of developing a clear acetate, and then developing a screen coated with photosensitive emulsion. Currently starting to dabble in gel press printing, and looking forward to using feathers in that. (Not easy to do printmaking within the confines of a tiny bedsit 😅)

    • @BoruArt

      Oh yes! Very cool, indeed! I’ve used diazo coatings to do silk screens (in a very rudimentary way!) that sounds so fun - commercial screen printing. I’d love to hear more about your gel press printing because I have no idea what that is … like the jelli plates? I’ve wanted to do more with those - I’ve got two and I’ve only dabbled with them a couple times. But Ive seen amazing results around… very inspiring! I love the idea of print making, but I don’t have much experience yet… I’d love to see what you’re up to!

    I really must try cyanotype! Thank you for this tutorial, Brian! It's very interesting. I was surprised to hear the exposure time is so short, and I had no idea you could use cyanotype on fabric! Does the cyanotype solution smell like anything? I love the ghost images and that Prussian blue is beautiful indeed! The short preview of your work with watercolor on cyanotype looks really nice. I'm looking forward to part 2 of this cyanotype saga!😊

    • @BoruArt
      @BoruArt 19 дней назад

      Smell? No… not that I’ve noticed - if it does it’s very very faint. Yeah, it’s good fun! Keep in mind what the UV is like in Texas right now, haha!! In the winter it’d be quite a bit longer but on a day like today? Reallllly quick! Yes! I loooove the cyanotype on fabric! You can even wash it, but the detergent shouldn’t have phosphates (? I think?) on it or it will do something chemically that causes it to disappear or change color or something. I can’t recall. But yeah, such a striking look! You should definitely try it - and since you like botanicals, this is really popular with that style of art (historically). Anna Atkins did some really nice prints in the 1830s and after - you might like her work!

      Oh it’s not a silly question at all. I am so unaffected by chemical smells that I had to think a minute. Then I sniffed the two parts… I could mayyyyybe get something with part B, but do faint, I wasn’t even sure. Anyway… I’ll guess you’ve wouldn’t be bothered (but let me know if you are!! Beautiful autumn colours with all the purples and oranges - and loving the style (as ever!) of both of these :) I enjoyed your cat rambles and your tribute to Bokky was certainly very special. Incidentally, there was a lot of discussion here about the roof of the house - I had a glow from a space rocket in mind (the porthole in the side with the light flooding out of it), while someone else pointed out that they thought it was the eye of the house opening, tying it in with the cat. I really enjoy the tangents and loving how the stickers turned out - good job! :D

    • @BoruArt

      Oh interesting!! The roof discussion… I like the sounds of both of those! It was a last-minute addition that element… I had an eye in mind but I totally see the rocket too, now that you’ve mentioned it. But it’s also not something that has direct meaning so… it all works! I am enjoying this looser, playful style too. It’s satisfying that itch to tell stories, I think. 🤔 always love hearing your feedback, Julie!
