First Descendant - It's Worth the Price
Free-to-play games aren't often at the top of my list to check out but a looter shooter that has Outriders vibes was one I wasn't going to pass up. To my surprise, it was actually very solid, with far more content than I expected. Eventually it hits a wall where all you have to do is grind but who cares - it's FREE to play which means free to walk away from when you're done.

Hellblade 2 - All Flash and No Substance
Просмотров 6732 месяца назад
I'm a sucker for a good looking game like everyone else and maybe I've just gotten dumber, but Hellblade 2 really showed me that I need something more than just pretty visuals. While probably the best looking game I've ever played, Hellblade 2 is also one of the most boring because it isn't very engaging as a game. I think the best way to enjoy this piece of art, is to just watch someone else p...
Helldivers 2 Reminds Us Games Can Be Fun
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
For a game I knew nothing about, Helldivers 2 really got its teeth into me. After trying to figure out why its been so successful, I think it all just boils down to that fact that this is a very straightforward and well made game that puts the emphasis on having fun. It knows what players want and puts minimal obstacles in their way to let them get to all the good stuff.
You Should Get Game Pass
Просмотров 4057 месяцев назад
If it hasn't been made clear by now, I play a lot of games. It can be a pretty expensive hobby, so when Game Pass appeared, I was floored by the value it provided. It is such a huge positive in the world of gaming that I felt like I needed to gush about it for those who have no clue what it is or are maybe on the fence about getting it.
When a Soulslike Feels Fair & When it Doesn't
Просмотров 20 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I never thought I would get into a Soulslike quite like Lies of P due to its unforgiving level of difficulty. But after awhile, the challenge is what made it so much fun. I was excited to try out Lords of the Fallen right after but was let down by how "off" it felt. In difficult games like these, small design shifts can mean the difference between a fun challenge and an irritating one.
Exploring Starfield's Missing Hook
Просмотров 4,2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Like many, I had very high hopes for Bethesda's latest game, Starfield. While it is by no stretch horrible, it does miss some key elements that make Bethesda games as engaging as they are. One of these elements is the initial hook that pulls you into the world they have created. Starfield has no real hook and shows how without it, it becomes hard to want to engage with the rest of the experience.
Baldur's Gate 3 - Revivifying Gaming's Magic

If you couldn't tell, I love games. But recently my excitement for them has waned as they have become more uninspired. I knew from the early access I was going to like Baldur's Gate 3, but I had no idea how much I'd love it. It's a real RPG powerhouse and probably the best D&D adaptation we may ever get. Mostly importantly though, it reminded me of the FUN games can be without all the filler dr...
Diablo 4 - What Fresh Hell (Review?)

As one of the top names in the ARPG genre, Diablo 4 had some pretty major expectations behind it. After more than 10 years since the last entry, there was a lot of curiosity around how Diablo 4 would turn out. While it certainly is a Diablo game, there were some small yet interesting changes made to the classic design of the game. I think it's worth applauding alterations to the core elements o...
The Problem with Early Access Games
Просмотров 7 тыс.Год назад
More and more games seem to be taking the Early Access approach to development. While this has definitely delivered some fantastic final products, I personally can't stand the model. It may feel like an old man yelling at the sky but there has to be a better way of doing things instead of releasing pieces of a game over long stretches of time. A way that doesn't put pressure on developers but a...
When Open Worlds Get Too Big

Open world games can be a blast - filling you with a sense of wonder and adventure. But a lot of the time companies seem to just be pushing map size over actual fun gameplay. How to Make the Nemesis System Work With Batman

Gotham Knights is coming out and it is confirmed it won't have the nemesis system. Since playing Shadow of War, all I could think of is how crazy it is that this system was never added into a Batman game; the two games are already so similar and Batman has such an interesting setting and villains. An interactive movie would be like the tell tale games or Detroit Become Human, where the choices you make are the gameplay and leads to each gamer having a personalized unique experience. Hellblade 2 doesn’t even have that. Calling this a video game at all is a stretch as there’s so little interactivity that actually matters

    • @talkgamingtome

Oh the Telltale games are fantastic. Those games are a lot like the old choose your own adventure books. I think Hellblade is more like a movie because nothing you do matters. There aren't even choices to make - everyone is just playing through the same motions.

And sometimes I can't enjoy it because it's not the full game which in return makes me really think twice before I buy something like this again. I mean to be fair, Hellblade does have a semblance of a gameplay: It has puzzle and combat, but not so much for a world interactivity. I'd argue that rather than an interactive movie, Hellblade is more of a middle ground between a movie and a game. It has been like that since the first game. A lot of games does this too, especially in indie space, where they focuses more on the story rather than the gameplay, making it more of an interactive movie rather than a game, and it has been an endless discussion too since over a decade ago: Could you consider walking simulator as a game? But I your point is more of this: rather than the gameplay itself, I think it's more about the price point, 60 USD is rather a hefty price for a walking simulator.

    • @talkgamingtome
      @talkgamingtome 2 месяца назад

I like your points. There is that endless debate around if walking simulators are games and I may need to cover one to add my 2 cents...But even those I think are more "interactive" as you have total control most of the time. I'd love to watch Hellblade as you don't get to play much of it or at least, that's what it feels like. You are right, if it was like $30, I would be way less harsh on it.

i've only got one playthrough, and it's with a friend on tactician mode. In the beginning, I wanted to avoid thievery, just purchasing and working for all the items that you need, but quickly realized that tactician difficulty would not let me maintain that moral standpoint, and that we would need every spellbook, scroll, grenade, or weapon that we could get our hands on in order to gain an advantage (especially in act 1). Now, we have a character or two at max thievery at all times so that when we meet a new trader, we can just rob them blind in the name of gearing up.

my biggest issue which you touched on briefly is the fact that some early access games change so drastically in development that the final product is so dissimilar and features you've come to appreciate get cut. I know it's a hot take but at a certain point I went from loving the very early access version of Dead Cells to downright hating the full bloated version it's come to be today. at one point it was a very tight linear roguelike with a satisfying boss but now it's a massive branching, grindy, and overly difficult game with the way full boss cell mode works. yeah it's a great game for those who like it but the version I played and enjoyed is basically impossible to experience now so I haven't touched the game in years.

    • @talkgamingtome

That is 100% a symptom of "people don't actually know what they want". If these devs take in too much feedback up to the release, it can ruin what made the concept so special in the first place.

Maybe we could then use your idea of randomized supervillains and have a thug take up the mantle somehow of each villain or just take up their business until their boss eventually returns

Let me explain your experience of league. Eventually you will put a lot of time learning said game. You will get good and it will become addicting to win. 3 out of 5 games you will have a troll. Say this statistic is smaller but Id argue it's bigger. If they aren't a troll they are litterally an AI the game put in to help wait timers. After 20 mins of this game you will want to quit but can't because said feeders on your team won't sur. You will than be forced into do I waste my life or quit. Should you not perform to the fullest you will eventually get account banned. Or should you run into leagues amazingly salty community that just reports to show how their days going you will eventually get account banned. Now you're left with create a new account or do what you should have done a long time ago delete the game. Please save a step people. Not saying league isn't fun it has its moments but riot is a terrible company and the community is considered the worst community in all video games. Why put this negativity in your life?

If it costs money: Call it early access and face reviews. Good and bad. If it doesn't cost money: Call it open beta and don't worry about reviews until release. This is how it is and how it should be. There's no other alternative. Otherwise companies are free to con customers left and right. Depending on the pricing the reviewers should NOT account for whether it's an early access or full release game.
